We compute the effects of thermal Comptonization of soft photons emitted from a Kep- lerian disk around a black hole by the post-shock region of a sub-Keplerian flow, known as the CENtrifugal pressure dominated BOundary Layer (CENBOL). We show that the spectral state transitions of black hole candidates could be explained either by varying the outer boundary of the CENBOL, which also happens to be the inner edge of the Keplerian disk, or by changing the central density of the CENBOL which is governed by the rate of the sub-Keplerian flow. We confirm the conclusions of the previous the- oretical studies that the interplay between the intensity of the soft photons emitted by the Keplerian flow and the optical depth and electron temperature of the Comptonizing cloud is responsible for the state transitions in a black hole.
Warm Comptonization models for the soft X-ray excess in AGN do not self-consistently explain the relationship between the Comptonizing medium and the underlying accretion disc. Because of this, they cannot directly connect the fitted Comptonization temperatures and optical depths to accretion disc parameters. Since bulk velocities exceed thermal velocities in highly radiation pressure dominated discs, in these systems bulk Comptonization by turbulence may provide a physical basis in the disc itself for warm Comptonization models. We model the dependence of bulk Comptonization on fundamental ac…
Radiation pressure dominated accretion discs around compact objects may have turbulent velocities that greatly exceed the electron thermal velocities within the disc. Bulk Comptonization by the turbulence may therefore dominate over thermal Comptonization in determining the emergent spectrum. Bulk Comptonization by divergenceless turbulence is due to radiation viscous dissipation only. It can be treated as thermal Comptonization by solving the Kompaneets equation with an equivalent "wave" temperature, which is a weighted sum over the power present at each scale in the turbulent cascade. Bulk C…
We introduce a new method for treating Comptonization in computational fluid dynamics. By construction, this method conserves the number of photons. Whereas the traditional "blackbody Comptonization" approach assumes that the radiation is locally a perfect blackbody and therefore uses a single parameter, the radiation temperature, to describe the radiation, the new "photon-conserving Comptonization" approach treats the photon gas as a Bose-Einstein fluid and keeps track of both the radiation temperature and the photon number density. We have implemented photon-conserving Comptonization in the …
Radiation pressure dominated accretion discs may have turbulent velocities that exceed the electron thermal velocities. Bulk Comptonization by the turbulence may therefore dominate over thermal Comptonization in determining the emergent spectrum. We discuss how to self-consistently resolve and interpret this effect in calculations of spectra of radiation MHD simulations. In particular, we show that this effect is dominated by radiation viscous dissipation and can be treated as thermal Comptonization with an equivalent temperature. We investigate whether bulk Comptonization may provide a physic…
We describe HEROIC, an upgraded version of the relativistic radiative post-processor code HERO described in a previous paper, but which now Includes Comptonization. HEROIC models Comptonization via the Kompaneets equation, using a quadratic approximation for the source function in the short characteristics radiation solver. It employs a simple form of accelerated lambda iteration to handle regions of high scattering opacity. In addition to solving for the radiation field, HEROIC also solves for the gas temperature by applying the condition of radiative equilibrium. We present benchmarks and te…
We develop a Monte Carlo Comptonization model for the X-ray spectrum of accretion-powered pulsars. Simple, spherical, thermal Comptonization models give harder spectra for higher optical depth, while the observational data from Vela X-1 show that the spectra are harder at higher luminosity. This suggests a physical interpretation where the optical depth of the accreting plasma increases with mass accretion rate. We develop a detailed Monte-Carlo model of the accretion flow, including the effects of the strong magnetic field ($\sim 10^{12}$ G) both in geometrically constraining the flow into an…
The aim of this work is to investigate in a physical and quantitative way the spectral evolution of bright Neutron Star Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (NS LMXBs), with special regard to the transient hard X-ray tails. We analyzed INTEGRAL data for five sources (GX 5-1, GX 349+2, GX 13+1, GX 3+1, GX 9+1) and built broad-band X-ray spectra from JEM-X1 and IBIS/ISGRI data. For each source, X-ray spectra from different states were fitted with the recently proposed model compTB. The spectra have been fit with a two-compTB model. In all cases the first compTB describes the dominant part of the spectrum tha…
A type-I burst could influence the accretion process through radiation pressure and Comptonization both for the accretion disk and the corona/boundary layer of an X-ray binary, and vice versa. We investigate the temporal evolution of a bright photospheric radius expansion (PRE) burst of 4U 1608-52 detected by Insight-HXMT in 1-50 keV, with the aim of studying the interplay between the burst and persistent emission. Apart from the emission from the neutron star (NS) surface, we find the residuals both in the soft (<3 keV) and hard (>10 keV) X-ray band. Time-resolved spectroscopy reveals that th…
A black hole accretion may have both the Keplerian and the sub-Keplerian component. In the so-called Chakrabarti-Titarchuk scenario, the Keplerian component supplies low energy (soft) photons while the sub-Keplerian component supplies hot electrons which exchange their energy with the soft photons through Comptonization or inverse Comptonization processes. In the sub-Keplerian component, a shock is generally produced due to the centrifugal force. The postshock region is known as the CENtrifugal pressure-supported BOundary Layer (CENBOL). In this paper, we compute the effects of the thermal and…
We develop a new theoretical model describing the formation of the radiation spectrum in accretion-powered X-ray pulsars as a result of bulk and thermal Comptonization of photons in the accretion column. The new model extends the previous model developed by the authors in four ways: (1) we utilize a conical rather than cylindrical geometry; (2) the radiation components emitted from the column wall and the column top are computed separately; (3) the model allows for a non-zero impact velocity at the stellar surface; and (4) the velocity profile of the gas merges with Newtonian free-fall far fro…
We study the structure of the accretion flow in the hard state of the black-hole X-ray binary MAXI~J1820+070 with \nicer data. The power spectra show broadband variability which can be fit with four Lorentzian components peaking at different time scales. Extracting power spectra as a function of energy enables the energy spectra of these different power spectral components to be reconstructed. We found significant spectral differences among Lorentzians, with the one corresponding to the shortest variability time scales displaying the hardest spectrum. Both the variability spectra and the time-…
Continuum and reflection spectral models have each been widely employed in measuring the spins of accreting black holes. However, the two approaches have not been implemented together in a photon-conserving, self-consistent framework. We develop such a framework using the black-hole X-ray binary GX 339-4 as a touchstone source, and we demonstrate three important ramifications: (1) Compton scattering of reflection emission in the corona is routinely ignored, but is an essential consideration given that reflection is linked to the regimes with strongest Comptonization. Properly accounting for th…
Bulk velocities exceed thermal velocities for sufficiently radiation pressure dominated accretion flows. We model the contribution of bulk Comptonization to the soft X-ray excess in AGN. Bulk Comptonization is due to both turbulence and the background shear. We calculate spectra both taking into account and not taking into account bulk velocities using scaled data from radiation magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shearing box simulations. We characterize our results with temperatures and optical depths to make contact with other warm Comptonization models of the soft excess. We chose our fiducial mass,…
Aims: Spectral and temporal analysis of the NuSTAR observation Galactic Be-XRB Swift J1845.7-0037. during its recent outburst. Methods: For the spectral analysis we use both phenomenological and physics-based models. We employ an often used empirical model to identify the main characteristics of the spectral shape in relation to nominal spectral characteristics of X-ray pulsars. Additionally, we used the latest version of Bulk \& Thermal comptonization model (BW), to assess the validity of the spectral components required by the empirical model and to investigate the origin of the hard X-ray e…
The broadband X-ray emission from type 1 active galactic nuclei, dominated by a powerlaw continuum, is thought to arise from repeated inverse Compton scattering of seed optical/UV photons by energetic electrons in a hot corona. The seed optical/UV photons are assumed to arise from an accretion disc but a direct observational evidence has remained elusive. Here we report the discovery of variations in the UV emission preceding the variations in the X-ray emission based on $\sim100\,\mathrm{ks}$ XMM-Newton observations of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 493. We find the UV emission to lead …
Accretion flows having positive specific energy are known to produce outflows and winds which escape to a large distance. According to Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model, centrifugal pressure dominated region of the flow just outside the black hole horizon, with or without shocks, acts as the base of this outflow. Electrons from this region are depleted due to the wind and consequently, energy transfer rate due to inverse Comptonization of low energy photons are affected. Specifically, it becomes easier to cool this region and emerging spectrum is softened. Our main goal is to show spec…
We explore spectral properties of a Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) around a neutron star. We compute the effects of thermal Comptonization of soft photons emitted from a Keplerian disc and the boundary layer of the neutron star by the post-shock region of a sub-Keplerian flow, formed due to the centrifugal barrier. The shock location $X_s$ is also the inner edge of the Keplerian disc. We compute a series of realistic spectra assuming a set of electron temperatures of the post-shock region $T_{CE}$, the temperature of the normal boundary layer (NBOL) $T_{NS}$ of the neutron star and the sh…
We present five simultaneous UV/X-ray observations of IC4329A by AstroSat, performed over {a five-month} period. We utilize the excellent spatial resolution of the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat to reliably separate the intrinsic AGN flux from the host galaxy emission and to correct for the Galactic and internal reddening, as well as the contribution from the narrow and broad-line regions. We detect large-amplitude UV variability, which is unusual for a large black hole mass AGN, like IC4329A, over such a small period. In fact, the fractional variability amplitude is la…
A large fraction of accreting black hole and neutron stars systems present clear evidence of the reprocessing of X-rays in the atmosphere of an optically-thick accretion disk. The main hallmarks of X-ray reflection include fluorescent K-shell emission lines from iron ($\sim 6.4-6.9$ keV), the absorption iron K-edge ($\sim 7-9$ keV), and a broad featureless component known as the Compton hump ($\sim 20-40$ keV). This Compton hump is produced as the result of the scattering of high-energy photons ($E \gtrsim 10$ keV) of the relatively colder electrons ($T_e \sim 10^5-10^7$ K) in the accretion di…
Aims. The black hole binary SWIFT J1753.5-0127 is providing a unique data set to study accretion flows. Various investigations of this system and of other black holes have not, however, led to an agreement on the accretion flow geometry or on the seed photon source for Comptonization during different stages of X-ray outbursts. We place constraints on these accretion flow properties by studying long-term spectral variations of this source. Methods. We performed phenomenological and self-consistent broad band spectral modeling of Swift J1753.5-0127 using quasi-simultaneous archived data from INT…
Most of the spectra of neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS LMXBs), being them persistent or transient, are characterized by the presence of a strong thermal Comptonization bump, thought to originate in the transition layer (TL) between the accretion disk and the NS surface. The observable quantities which characterize this component dominating the emission below 30 keV, are the spectral index alpha and the rollover energy, both related to the electron temperature and optical depth of the plasma. Starting from observational results on a sample of NS LMXBs in different spectral states, we f…
We used the newly developed thermal plus bulk Comptonization model comptb to investigate the spectral evolution of the neutron star LMXB Cyg X-2 along its Z-track. We selected a single source in order to trace in a quantitative way the evolution of the physical parameters of the model. We analyzed archival broad-band BeppoSAX spectra of Cyg X-2. Five broad-band spectra have been newly extracted according to the source position in the Z-track described in the colour-colour and colour-intensity diagrams. We have fitted the spectra of the source with two comptb components. The first one, with bul…
The X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGN) show a soft X-ray excess below 1-2 keV on top of the extrapolated high- energy power law. The origin of this component is uncertain. It could be a signature of relativistically blurred, ionized reflection, or the high-energy tail of thermal Comptonization in a warm (kT $\sim$ 1 keV), optically thick ($τ\simeq$ 10-20) corona producing the optical/UV to soft X-ray emission. The purpose of the present paper is to test the warm corona model on a statistically significant sample of unabsorbed, radio-quiet AGN with XMM-newton archival data, prov…
We present broadband UV/X-ray spectral variability of the changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC 1566 based on simultaneous near-ultraviolet (NUV) and X-ray observations performed by XMM-Newton, Swift, and NuSTAR satellites at five different epochs during the declining phase of the 2018 outburst. We found that the accretion disk, soft X-ray excess, and the X-ray power-law components were extremely variable. Additionally, the X-ray power-law flux was correlated with both the soft excess plus disk and the pure disk fluxes. Our finding shows that at high flux levels the soft X-ray excess and t…
We study the Fourier time-lags due to the Comptonization of disc-emitted photons in a spherical, uniform, and stationary X-ray corona, which located on the rotational axis of the black hole. We use Monk, a general relativistic Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code, to calculate Compton scattering of photons emitted by a thin disc with a Novikov-Thorne temperature profile. We find that the model time-lags due to Comptonization remain constant up to a characteristic frequency and then rapidly decrease to zero at higher frequencies. We provide equations which can be used to determine the time-lags …
We have developed an improved model of X-ray emission from optically thin, two-temperature accretion flows, \texttt{kerrflow}, using an exact Monte Carlo treatment of global Comptonization as well as with a fully general relativistic description of both the radiative and hydrodynamic processes. It also includes pion-decay electrons, whose synchrotron emission dominates the seed photons yield at high accretion rates in flows around supermassive black holes. We consider in detail the dependence of the model spectra on the black hole spin, the electron heating efficiency, the plasma magnetization…
The Temporal and Spectral variations of black hole candidates during outbursts have been reported in several publications. It is well known that during an outburst, the source becomes soft in the first few days, and then returns to the hard state after a few weeks or months. In the present paper, we show the variation of Comptonization Efficiency (CE), obtained from the ratio of the black body photon number to the power-law photon number, as a function of time in several outbursts. Since the power-law photons are generated through inverse-Comptonization of the intercepted soft photons, the CE …
4U 1705-44 is one of the most-studied type I X-ray burster and Atoll sources. This source represents a perfect candidate to test different models proposed to self-consistently track the physical changes occurring between different spectral states because it shows clear spectral state transitions. The broadband coverage, the sensitivity and energy resolution of the BeppoSAX satellite offers the opportunity to disentangle the components that form the total X-ray spectrum and to study their changes according to the spectral state. Using two BeppoSAX observations carried out in August and October …
Hard X-rays observed in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are thought to originate from the Comptonization of the optical/UV accretion disk photons in a hot corona. Polarization studies of these photons can help to constrain the corona geometry and the plasma properties. We have developed a ray-tracing code that simulates the Comptonization of accretion disk photons in coronae of arbitrary shape, and use it here to study the polarization of the X-ray emission from wedge and spherical coronae. We study the predicted polarization signatures for the fully relativistic and various approximate treatmen…
We investigate roles of the bulk comptonization process in the propagation of thermal photons emitted at the shock breakout of a supernova explosion. We use a hydrodynamical model based on a self-similar solution for the shock breakout. The propagation of photons is treated by a Monte-Carlo technique. Results of the simulations successfully reproduce the power-law spectrum observed by X-ray observations for XRF 080109/SN 2008D, if a mildly relativistic shock velocity is assumed. Effects of some radiative processes, photoionization, radiative recombination, and free-free absorption on the propa…
Understanding the radiative and physical structures of inner region of a few 100 pc of AGNs is important to constrain the causes of their activities. Although the X-ray emission from the Comptonization region/corona and the accretion disc regulates the broad line emission regions and torus structures, the exact mutual dependency is not understood well. We performed correlation studies for X-ray, mid-infrared, and different components of Balmer emission lines for the selected sample of AGNs. Almost 10 different parameters and their inter-dependencies were explored in order to understand the und…
We analyse in detail the X-ray data of the microquasar Cygnus X-3 obtained during major radio flaring episodes in 2006 with multiple observatories. The analysis consists of two parts: probing the fast (~ 1 minute) X-ray spectral evolution with Principal Component Analysis followed by subsequent spectral fits to the time-averaged spectra (~ 3 ks). Based on the analysis we find that the overall X-ray variability during major flaring episodes can be attributed to two principal components whose evolution based on spectral fits is best reproduced by a hybrid Comptonization component and a bremsstra…
We report results from a broadband spectral analysis of the low mass X-ray binary MXB 1658-298 with the Swift/XRT and NuSTAR observations made during its 2015-2017 outburst. The source showed different spectral states and accretion rates during this outburst. The source was in low/hard state during 2015; and it was in high/soft state during the 2016 NuSTAR observations. This is the first time that a comparison of the soft and hard spectral states during an outburst is being reported in MXB 1658-298. Compared with the observation of 2015, the X-ray luminosity was about four times higher during …
The connection of type-B QPOs to the hot flow in the inner accretion disk region is vaguely understood in black hole X-ray binaries. We performed spectral and timing studies of twenty-three observations where type-C and type-B QPOs with similar centroid frequencies (~ 6 Hz) occurred. Their spectral differences were used to understand the production mechanism of type-B QPOs, along with the quasi-simultaneous radio observations. Based on the spectral results, we did not notice many variations in the Comptonization parameters and the inner disk radius during type-C and type-B QPOs. We found that …
We have obtained new solutions and methods for the process of thermal Comptonization. We modify the solution to the kinetic equation of Sunyaev \& Titarchuk to allow its application up to mildly relativistic electron temperatures and optical depths $\gtrsim{1}$. The solution can be used for spectral fitting of X-ray spectra from astrophysical sources. We also have developed an accurate Monte Carlo method for calculating spectra and timing properties of thermal-Comptonization sources. The accuracy of our kinetic-equation solution is verified by comparison with the Monte Carlo results. We also c…
Temporal and spectral variations of black hole candidates during outbursts have been reported in several publications. It is well known that during an outburst, source becomes softer in first few days, and then returns to hard states after a few weeks or months. In the present paper, we show variation of Comptonization Efficiency (CE), defined to be the ratio of number of power-law photons and number of soft photons injected to into the Compton cloud, as a function of time in several outbursts. Since power-law photons are generated through inverse-Comptonization of the intercepted soft photons…
We perform two-dimensional simulations to study how the wind strength changes with accretion rate. We take into account bremsstrahlung, synchrotron radiation and the Comptonization. We find that when the accretion rate is low, radiative cooling is not important, the accretion flow is hot accretion flow. For the hot accretion flow, wind is very strong. The mass flux of wind can be $\sim 50\%$ of the mass inflow rate. When the accretion rate increases to a value at which radiative cooling rate is roughly equal to or slightly larger than viscous heating rate, cold clumps can form around the equat…
We report on the results from observations of the most recent outbursts of XTE J1739-302 and IGR J17544-2619, which are considered to be the prototypes of the supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) class. They triggered the Swift/BAT on 2011 February 22 and March 24, respectively, and each time a prompt Swift slew allowed us to obtain the rich broad-band data we present. The XRT light curves show the descending portion of very bright flares that reached luminosities of ~2x10^{36} and ~5x10^{36} erg/s, respectively. The broad-band spectra, when fit with the usual phenomenological models adopted…
We study radiative properties of hot accretion flows in a general relativistic model with an exact treatment of global Comptonization, developed in our recent works. We note a strong dependence of electron temperature on the strength of magnetic field and we clarify that the underlying mechanism involves the change of the flow structure, with more strongly magnetised flows approaching the slab geometry more closely. We find that the model with thermal synchrotron radiation being the main source of seed photons agrees with the spectral index vs Eddington ratio relation observed in black hole tr…
Observations show that there is a positive correlation between Eddington ratio $λ$ and hard X-ray index $Γ$ for $λ\gtrsim 0.01$, and there is an anti-correlation between $λ$ and $Γ$ for $λ\lesssim 0.01$ in black hole X-ray binaries (with $λ=L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$). In this work, we theoretically investigate the correlation between $Γ$ and $λ$ within the framework of disk-corona model. We improve the model by taking into account all cooling processes including synchrotron and self-Compton radiations in the corona, Comptonization of the soft photons from the underlying accretion disk, and the …
We analyze the X-ray spectra and their timing properties of the compact X-ray binary 4U~1820-30. We establish a number of spectral transitions in this source seen with BeppoSAX and RXTE. During the RXTE observations (1996 -- 2009), the source were approximately 75% of its time in the soft state making the lower banana and upper banana transitions combined with long-term low-high state transitions. We reveal that all of the X-ray spectra of 4U~1820-30 are fit by a composition of a thermal (blackbody) component, a Comptonization component (COMPTB) and a Gaussian-line component. Thus using this s…
Recent observations with ALMA have revealed evidence for non-thermal synchrotron emission from the core regions of two nearby Seyfert galaxies. This suggests that the coronae of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be conducive to the acceleration of non-thermal electrons, in addition to the hot, thermal electrons responsible for their X-ray emission through thermal Comptonization. Here we investigate the mechanism of such particle acceleration, based on observationally inferred parameters for AGN disk coronae. One possibility to account for the observed non-thermal electrons i…
We study the high energy power-law tail emission of X-ray binaries (XRBs) by a bulk Comptonization process which usually observe in the very high soft VHS state of blackhole BH XRBs and the high soft HS state of neutron star (NS) and BH XRBs. Earlier, to generate the power-law tail in bulk Comptonization framework, a free-fall converging flow into BH or NS has been considered as a bulk region. In this work, for a bulk region we consider mainly an outflow geometry from the accretion disk which is bounded by a torus surrounding the compact object. We have a two choice for an outflow geometry i) …
We investigate the polarization properties of Comptonized X-rays from relativistic jets in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) using Monte Carlo simulations. We consider three scenarios commonly proposed for the observed X-ray emission in AGN: Compton scattering of blackbody photons emitted from an accretion disk; scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons; and self-Comptonization of intrinsically polarized synchrotron photons emitted by jet electrons. Our simulations show that for Comptonization of disk and CMB photons, the degree of polarization of the scattered photons increases with …
Here we present a detailed study of the broadband noise in the power density spectra of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the hard state of its 2018 outburst, using the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) observations. The broadband noise shows two main humps, which might separately correspond to variability from a variable disk and two Comptonization regions. We fitted the two humps with multiple Lorentzian functions and studied the energy-dependent properties of each component up to 100--150 keV and their evolution with spectral changes. The lowest frequency compon…
We investigate state transitions in black hole X-ray binaries through different parameters by using two-dimensional axisymmetric hydrodynamical simulation method. For radiative cooling in hot accretion flow, we take into account the bremsstrahlung, synchrotron and synchrotron-self Comptonization self-consistently in the dynamics. Our main result is that the state transitions occur when the accretion rate reaches a critical value $\dot M \sim 3α \dot M_{\rm Edd}$, above which cold and dense clumpy/filamentary structures are formed, embedded within the hot gas. We argued this mode likely corresp…
The paper presents the results of three-dimensional (3D) modelling of the structure and the emission of accretion columns formed above the surface of accreting strongly magnetized neutron stars under the circumstances when a pressure of the photons generated in the column base is enough to determine the dynamics of the plasma flow. On the foundation of numerical radiation hydrodynamic simulations, several 3D models of accretion column are constructed. The first group of the models contains spatially 3D columns. The corresponding calculations lead to the distributions of the radiation flux over…
We perform an X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest and cleanest bare AGN known so far, Ark 120, in order to determine the process(es) at work in the vicinity of the SMBH. We present spectral analysis of data from an extensive campaign observing Ark 120 in X-rays with XMM-Newton (4$\times$120 ks, 2014 March 18-24), and NuSTAR (65.5 ks, 2014 March 22). During this very deep X-ray campaign, the source was caught in a high flux state similar to the earlier 2003 XMM-Newton observation, and about twice as bright as the lower-flux observation in 2013. The spectral analysis confirms the "softer wh…
Even though the observed spectra for GRB prompt emission is well constrained, no single radiation mechanism can robustly explain its distinct non-thermal nature. Here we explore the radiation mechanism with the photospheric emission model using our Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer (MCRaT) code. We study the sub-photospheric Comptonization of fast cooled synchrotron photons while the Maxwellian electrons and mono-energetic protons are accelerated to relativistic energies by repeated dissipation events. Unlike previous simulations, we implement a realistic photon to electron number ratio $N_γ/N_{e…
We present an analysis of the broad-band spectra of 4U~1705--44 obtained with {\it Suzaku} in 2006--2008 and by {\it BeppoSAX} in 2000. The source exhibits two distinct states: the hard state shows emission from 1 to 150 keV, while the soft state is mostly confined to be $<40$ keV. We model soft-state continuum spectra with two thermal components, one of which is a multicolor accretion disk and the other is a single-temperature blackbody to describe the boundary layer, with additional weak Comptonization represented by either a simple power law or the SIMPL model by Steiner et al. The hard-sta…
We study time evolution of sub-Keplerian transonic accretion flows onto black holes using a general relativistic numerical simulation code. We perform simulations around the black holes having non-zero rotation. We first compare one-dimensional simulation results with theoretical results and validate the performance of our code. Next, we present results of axisymmetric, two-dimensional simulation of advective flows. In the literature, there is no solution which describes steady shock solutions in two dimensions. However, our simulations produce these centrifugal force supported steady shock wa…
We present global radiation GRMHD simulations of strongly magnetized accretion onto a spinning, stellar mass black hole at sub-Eddington rates. Using a frequency-dependent Monte Carlo procedure for Compton scattering, we self-consistently evolve a two-temperature description of the ion-electron fluid and its radiation field. For an Eddington ratio $L/L_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim 10^{-3}$, the emergent spectrum forms an apparent power law shape from thermal Comptonization up to a cutoff at $\simeq 100$ keV, characteristic of that seen in the hard spectral states of black hole X-ray binary systems. At th…
Radiatively inefficient, hot accretion flows are widely considered as a relevant accretion mode in low-luminosity AGNs. We study spectral formation in such flows using a refined model with a fully general relativistic description of both the radiative (leptonic and hadronic) and hydrodynamic processes, as well as with an exact treatment of global Comptonization. We find that the X-ray spectral index--Eddington ratio anticorrelation as well as the cut-off energy measured in the best-studied objects favor accretion flows with rather strong magnetic field and with a weak direct heating of electro…
A NuSTAR/Swift observation of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0419-577 taken during 2015 reveals one of the most extreme high energy cut-offs observed to date from an AGN - an origin due to thermal Comptonization would imply a remarkably low coronal temperature $kT \sim 15$ keV. The low energy peak of the spectrum in the hard X-ray NuSTAR band, which peaks before the expected onset of a Compton hump, rules out strong reflection as the origin of the hard excess in this AGN. We show the origin of the high energy rollover is likely due to a combination of both thermal Comptonization and an intri…
