We present simultaneous X-ray and optical B and V band light curves of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC3783 spanning 2 years. The flux in all bands is highly variable and the fluctuations are significantly correlated. As shown before by Stirpe et al. the optical bands vary simultaneously, with a delay of less than 1.5 days but both B and V bands lag the X-ray fluctuations by 3-9 days. This delay points at optical variability produced by X-ray reprocessing and the value of the lag places the reprocessor close to the broad line region. A power spectrum analysis of the light curve, however, shows that the X-ray variability has a power law shape bending to a steeper slope at a time-scale ~2.9 days while the variability amplitude in the optical bands continues to grow towards the longest time-scale covered, ~ 300 days. We show that the power spectra together with the small value of the time delay is inconsistent with a picture where all the optical variability is produced by X-ray reprocessing, though the small amplitude, rapid optical fluctuations might be produced in this way. We detect larger variability amplitudes on long time-scales in the optical bands than in the X-rays. This behaviour adds to similar results recently obtained for at least three other AGN and indicates a separate source of long term optical variability, possibly accretion rate or thermal fluctuations in the optically emitting accretion disc.
We present the analysis of three XMM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7590. The source was found to have no X-ray absorption in the low spatial resolution ASCA data. The XMM observations provide a factor of 10 better spatial resolution than previous ASCA data. We find that the X-ray emission of NGC 7590 is dominated by an off-nuclear ULX and extended emission from the host galaxy. The nuclear X-ray emission is rather weak comparing with the host galaxy. Based on its very low X-ray luminosity as well as the small ratio between the 2-10 keV and the [O III] fluxes, we interpret NGC 7590 a…
We present preliminary results of the X-ray analysis of XMM-Newton and Swift observations as part of a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign in 2012 of the radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 2004-447. The source was recently detected in gamma-rays by Fermi/LAT among only four other galaxies of that type. The 0.5-10 keV X-ray spectrum is well-described by a simple absorbed powerlaw (photon index ~ 1.6). The source brightness exhibits variability on timescales of months to years with indications for spectral variability, which follows a 'bluer-when-brighter' behaviour, similar to blazars…
We report spectral observations of the galaxy NPM1G -10.0586, the main candidate-companion of Mrk 509. Mrk 509 is a Seyfert galaxy showing no evidence of morphological perturbations of the potential. The spectrum of NPM1G -10.0586 obtained by us is emission-line. The derived weighted mean redshift is 0.03313 +- 0.00023, which makes NPM1G -10.0586 a physical companion of Mrk 509.
We report on multifrequency observations of the gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 1502+036 performed from radio to gamma-rays during 2008 August-2012 November by Fermi-LAT, Swift (XRT and UVOT), OVRO, VLBA, and VLA. No significant variability has been observed in gamma-rays, with 0.1-100 GeV flux that ranged between (3-7)x10^-8 ph/cm^2/s using 3-month time bins. The photon index of the LAT spectrum (Gamma=2.60+/-0.06) and the apparent isotropic gamma-ray luminosity, L(0.1-100 GeV)= 7.8x10^45 erg/s, over 51 months are typical of a flat spectrum radio quasar. The radio spectral…
We investigate the spectral variability of the Seyfert galaxy Fairall 9 using almost 6 years of monitoring with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) with an approximate time resolution of 4 days. We discover the existence of pronounced and sharp dips in the X-ray flux, with a rapid decline of the 2--20 keV flux of a factor 2 or more followed by a recovery to pre-dip fluxes after ~10 days . These dips skew the flux distribution away from the commonly observed log-normal distribution. Dips may result from the eclipse of the central X-ray source by broad line region (BLR) clouds, as has recentl…
We present the first unambiguous evidence of a broad (Gaussian width ~330 eV) component of the iron K-alpha fluorescent emission line in the X-ray obscured Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC5506. This is the main results of a spectroscopic monitoring campaign on this source performed with the XMM-Newton observatory between February 2001 and January 2009. The broad line lacks extreme redwards skewness. If modelled with a relativistic component, the profile of the line is consistent with a flat emissivity radial dependence (alpha~1.9). The disk inclination (~40 degrees) is nominally larger then ty…
NGC 185 is a dwarf spheroidal satellite of the Andromeda galaxy. From mid-1990s onwards it was revealed that dwarf spheroidals often display a varied and in some cases complex star formation history. In an optical survey of bright nearby galaxies, NGC 185 was classified as a Seyfert galaxy based on its emission line ratios. However, although the emission lines in this object formally place it in the category of Seyferts, it is probable that this galaxy does not contain a genuine active nucleus. NGC 185 was not detected in radio surveys either in 6 or 20 cm, or X-ray observations, which means t…
Warm absorption is a common phenomenon in Seyfert 1s and quasars, but rare in Seyfert 2s. In this paper, we report the detection of warm absorbers with high energy resolution in the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 18325-5926 for the first time with Chandra HETGS spectra. An intrinsic absorbing line system with an outflow velocity ~400 km/s was found, which is contributed by two warm absorbers with FWHM of 570 km/s and 1360 km/s, respectively. The two absorbers were adjacent, and doing a transverse motion across our line of sight. We constrained the distance of the absorbers to a small value, suggesting …
We present the detection of the ammonia (NH3) (J,K) = (1,1) to (4,4) and (6,6) inversion lines toward the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, made with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). This is the first detection of ammonia in a Seyfert galaxy. The ortho-to-para-NH3 abundance ratio suggests that the molecule was formed in a warm medium of at least 20 K. For the NH3 column density and fractional abundance, we find (1.09\pm0.23)\times10^14 cm^-2 and (2.9\pm0.6)\times10^-8, respectively, from the inner 1.2 kpc of NGC 1068. The kinetic temperature can be constrained to 80\pm20 K for the bulk of…
Parallel analysis of the large-scale morphology and local environment of matched active and control galaxy samples plays an important role in studies of the fueling of active galactic nuclei. We carry out a detailed morphological characterization of a sample of 35 Seyfert galaxies and a matched sample of inactive galaxies in order to compare the evidence of non-axisymmetric perturbation of the potential and, in the second part of this paper, to be able to perform a multicomponent photometric decomposition of the Seyfert galaxies. We constructed contour maps, BVRcIc profiles of the surface brig…
The starburst/Seyfert composite galaxy IRAS 01072+4954 (z=0.0236) is an enigmatic source that combines a Seyfert~1-like X-ray emission with a starburst optical spectrum that lacks broad line emission. We performed high angular resolution observations of the central kiloparsec of this galaxy in the near-infrared. Combining our data with 2MASS images of the whole galaxy, we obtain and model the surface brightness profile. We find indications for the presence of an elongated bar-like structure in both data sets. We also model the line of sight velocity distribution of the stars in the bulge. The …
Extended narrow-line regions (ENLRs) and extended emission-line regions (EELRs) have been the focus of integral field spectroscopy aiming at the inner kiloparsecs of nearby Seyfert galaxies as well as the larger environment of high redshift QSOs. Based on observations with the Wide Field Spectrograph WiFeS at the 2.3 m telescope of the Australian National University, we present spatially resolved emission-line diagnostics of the bright Seyfert 1.5 galaxy HE 2211-3903 which is drawn from a sample of the brightest Seyfert galaxies at z<0.06 with luminosities around the classical Seyfert/QSO dema…
An extended XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 has revealed a rich absorption line spectrum indicating the presence of a photoionized outflow with a wide range of velocities and ionization parameter. At low continuum fluxes an emission line spectrum is well defined with both narrow and broad components of several abundant metal ions. The absorption line velocity structure and a broad correlation of velocity and ionization parameter are consistent with an outflow scenario where a highly ionized, high velocity wind, perhaps launched during intermittent super-Eddington accret…
In about half of Seyfert galaxies, the X-ray emission is absorbed by an optically thin, ionized medium, the so-called "Warm Absorber", whose origin and location is still a matter of debate. The aims of this paper is to put more constraints on the warm absorber by studying its variability. We analyzed the X-ray spectra of a Seyfert 1 galaxy, Mrk 704, which was observed twice, three years apart, by XMM-Newton. The spectra were well fitted with a two zones absorber, possibly covering only partially the source. The parameters of the absorbing matter - column density, ionization state, covering fac…
We present J-band long-slit spectroscopic observation of NGC 1068 classified as a Seyfert 2 galaxy. J-band observations with OAO/ISLE provide clear detection of spatially extended [Fe II]1.257um and [P II]1.188um lines. We found that [Fe II]1.257um/[P II]1.188um increases with distance from a central continuum peak. Observed line ratios around the nucleus (continuum peak) are consistent with a typical value expected from photoionization models, while the ratios at 3" - 4" (210-280 pc) east and west of the nucleus are slightly higher than this. In the off nucleus region of NGC 1068 we also foun…
We present the results of our optical monitoring campaign of the X-ray source H 0507+164, a low luminosity Seyfert 1.5 galaxy at a redshift z = 0.018. Spectroscopic observations were carried out during 22 nights in 2007, from the 21 of November to the 26 of December. Photometric observations in the R-band for 13 nights were also obtained during the same period. The continuum and broad line fluxes of the galaxy were found to vary during our monitoring period. The R-band differential light curve with respect to a companion star also shows a similar variability. Using cross correlation analysis, …
We are presenting new results on kinematics and structure of the Mrk 334 Seyfert galaxy. Panoramic (3D) spectroscopy is performed at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences using the MPFS integral-field spectrograph and scanning Fabry--Perot interferometer. The deep images have revealed that Mrk 334 is observed during the final stage of its merging with a massive companion. A possible mass ratio ranges from 1/5 to 1/3. The merger has triggered mass redistribution in the disk resulting in an intensification of nuclear activity and in a burst…
Nuclear regions of galaxies generally host a mixture of components with different exitation, composition, and kinematics. Derivation of emission line ratios and kinematics could then be misleading, if due correction is not made for the limited spatial and spectral resolutions of the observations. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, with application to a long slit spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1358, how line intensities and velocities, together with modelling and knowledge of the point spread function, may be used to resolve the differing structures. In the situation outlined above, …
The narrow [O III] 4959, 5007 emission-line fluxes in the spectrum of the well-studied Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 are shown to vary with time. From this we show that the narrow line-emitting region has a radius of only 1-3 pc and is denser (n ~ 10^5 cm^{-3}) than previously supposed. The [O III] line width is consistent with virial motions at this radius given previous determinations of the black hole mass.Since the [O III] emission-line flux is usually assumed to be constant and is therefore used to calibrate spectroscopic monitoring data, the variability has ramifications for the long-term se…
We developed a hierarchical Bayesian model (HBM) to investigate how the presence of Seyfert activity relates to their environment, herein represented by the galaxy cluster mass, $M_{200}$, and the normalized cluster-centric distance, $r/r_{200}$. We achieved this by constructing an unbiased sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with morphological classifications provided by the Galaxy Zoo Project. A propensity score matching approach is introduced to control for the effects of confounding variables: stellar mass, galaxy colour, and star formation rate. The connection between Se…
The latest observations of line and continuum spectra emitted from the extended narrow line region (ENLR) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7212 are analysed using models accounting for photoionization from the active nucleus and shocks. The results show that relatively high (500--800 \kms) shock velocities appear on the edge of the cone and outside of it. The model-inferred AGN flux, which is lower than $10^{-11}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ eV$^{-1}$ at the Lyman limit, is more typical of low-luminosity AGN, and less so for Seyfert 2 galaxies. The preshock densities are characteristic of the ENLR a…
