We experimentally study the transport properties of silicon quantum dots (QDs) fabricated from a highly doped n-type silicon-on-insulator wafer. Low noise electrical measurements using a low temperature complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (LTCMOS) amplifier are performed at 4.2 K in liquid helium. Two series of Coulomb peaks are observed: long-period oscillations and fine structures, and both of them show clear source drain voltage dependence. We also observe two series of Coulomb diamonds having different periodicity. The obtained experimental results are well reproduced by a master equation analysis using a model of double QDs coupled in parallel.
The development of electronic devices, especially those that involve heterogeneous integration of materials, has led to increased challenges in addressing their thermal operational-temperature demands. The heat flow in these systems is significantly influenced or even dominated by thermal boundary resistance at interface between dissimilar materials. However, controlling and tuning heat transport across an interface and in the adjacent materials has so far drawn limited attention. In this work, we grow chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) diamond on silicon substrates by graphoepitaxy and experiment…
Coulomb diamonds are the archetypal signatures of Coulomb blockade, a well-known charging effect mainly observed in nanometer-sized "electronic islands" tunnel-coupled with charge reservoirs. Here, we identify apparent Coulomb diamond features in the scanning gate spectroscopy of a quantum point contact carved out of a semiconductor heterostructure, in the quantum Hall regime. Varying the scanning gate parameters and the magnetic field, the diamonds are found to smoothly evolve to checkerboard patterns. To explain this surprising behavior, we put forward a model which relies on the presence of…
We present a "nanoladder" geometry that minimizes the mechanical dissipation of ultrasensitive cantilevers. A nanoladder cantilever consists of a lithographically patterned scaffold of rails and rungs with feature size $\sim$ 100 nm. Compared to a rectangular beam of the same dimensions, the mass and spring constant of a nanoladder are each reduced by roughly two orders of magnitude. We demonstrate a low force noise of $158 (+62)(-42)\,$zN and $190 (+42)(-33)\,$zN in a one-Hz bandwidth for devices made from silicon and diamond, respectively, measured at temperatures between 100--150 mK. As opp…
Point defects in wide-bandgap semiconductors are emerging as versatile resources for nanoscale sensing and quantum information science but our understanding of the photo-ionization dynamics is presently incomplete. Here we use two-color confocal microscopy to investigate the dynamics of charge in Type 1b diamond hosting nitrogen-vacancy (NV) and silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers. By examining the non-local fluorescence patterns emerging from local laser excitation, we show that in the simultaneous presence of photo-generated electrons and holes, SiV (NV) centers selectively transform into the nega…
Color centers in diamond micro and nano structures are under investigation for a plethora of applications. However, obtaining high quality color centers in small structures is challenging, and little is known about how properties such as spin population lifetimes change during the transition from bulk to micro and nano structures. In this manuscript, we studied various ways to prepare diamond samples containing silicon vacancy centers and measured how population lifetimes of orbital states change in pillars as we varied their dimensions from approximately 1 $μ$m to 120 nm. We also researched t…
We introduce an algorithm that is able to find the facets of Coulomb diamonds in quantum dot arrays. We simulate these arrays using the constant-interaction model, and rely only on one-dimensional raster scans (rays) to learn a model of the device using regularized maximum likelihood estimation. This allows us to determine, for a given charge state of the device, which transitions exist and what the compensated gate voltages for these are. For smaller devices the simulator can also be used to compute the exact boundaries of the Coulomb diamonds, which we use to assess that our algorithm correc…
Quantum dot arrays possess ground states governed by Coulomb energies, utilized prominently by singly occupied quantum dots, each implementing a spin qubit. For such quantum processors, the controlled transitions between ground states are of operational significance, as these allow the control of quantum information within the array such as qubit initialization and entangling gates. For few-dot arrays, ground states are traditionally mapped out by performing dense raster-scan measurements in control-voltage space. These become impractical for larger arrays due to the large number of measuremen…
Vacancy centers in diamond have proven to be a viable solid-state platform for quantum coherent opto-electronic applications. Among the variety of vacancy centers, silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers have recently attracted much attention as an inversion-symmetric system that is less susceptible to electron-phonon interactions. Nevertheless, phonon-mediated processes still degrade the coherent properties of SiV centers, however characterizing their electron-phonon coupling is extremely challenging due to their weak spectroscopic signatures and remains an open experimental problem. In this paper we t…
Neutral silicon vacancy (SiV0) centers in diamond are promising candidates for quantum networks because of their excellent optical properties and long spin coherence times. However, spin-dependent fluorescence in such defects has been elusive due to poor understanding of the excited state fine structure and limited off-resonant spin polarization. Here we report the realization of optically detected magnetic resonance and coherent control of SiV0 centers at cryogenic temperatures, enabled by efficient optical spin polarization via previously unreported higher-lying excited states. We assign the…
Phonons are considered to be universal quantum transducers due to their ability to couple to a wide variety of quantum systems. Among these systems, solid-state point defect spins are known for being long-lived optically accessible quantum memories. Recently, it has been shown that inversion-symmetric defects in diamond, such as the negatively charged silicon vacancy center (SiV), feature spin qubits that are highly susceptible to strain. Here, we leverage this strain response to achieve coherent and low-power acoustic control of a single SiV spin, and perform acoustically driven Ramsey interf…
We control the electronic structure of the silicon-vacancy (SiV) color-center in diamond by changing its static strain environment with a nano-electro-mechanical system. This allows deterministic and local tuning of SiV optical and spin transition frequencies over a wide range, an essential step towards multi-qubit networks. In the process, we infer the strain Hamiltonian of the SiV revealing large strain susceptibilities of order 1 PHz/strain for the electronic orbital states. We identify regimes where the spin-orbit interaction results in a large strain suseptibility of order 100 THz/strain …
Magnetic imaging with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, also known as quantum diamond microscopy, has emerged as a useful technique for the spatial mapping of charge currents in solid-state devices. In this work, we investigate an application to photovoltaic (PV) devices, where the currents are induced by light. We develop a widefield nitrogen-vacancy microscope that allows independent stimulus and measurement of the PV device, and test our system on a range of prototype crystalline silicon PV devices. We first demonstrate micrometer-scale vector magnetic field imaging of custom PV devices …
Quantum emitters are an integral component for a broad range of quantum technologies including quantum communication, quantum repeaters, and linear optical quantum computation. Solid-state color centers are promising candidates for scalable quantum optics due to their long coherence time and small inhomogeneous broadening. However, once excited, color centers often decay through phonon-assisted processes, limiting the efficiency of single photon generation and photon mediated entanglement generation. Herein, we demonstrate strong enhancement of spontaneous emission rate of a single silicon-vac…
The spatial resolution and fluorescence signal amplitude in stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy is limited by the photostability of available fluorophores. Here, we show that negatively-charged silicon vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond are promising fluorophores for STED microscopy, owing to their photostable, near-infrared emission and favorable photophysical properties. A home-built pulsed STED microscope was used to image shallow implanted SiV centers in bulk diamond at room temperature. The SiV stimulated emission cross section for 765-800 nm light is found to be (4.0 +/- 0.3) x…

We present a full derivation of the interaction Hamiltonian for holes in silicon within the six-band envelope-function scheme, which appropriately describes the valence band close to the $\boldsymbolΓ$ point. The full structure of the single-hole eigenstates is taken into account, including the Bloch part. The scattering processes caused by the Coulomb interaction are shown to be both intraband and interband, the latter being mostly short-ranged. In the asymptotic long-range limit, the effective potential tends to the screened Coulomb potential, and becomes purely intraband, as assumed in prev…
Confinement in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides is an attractive platform for trapping single charge and spins for quantum information processing. Here, we present low temperature electron transport through etched 50-70nm MoS2 nanoribbons showing current oscillations as a function of gate voltage. On further investigations current through the device forms diamond shaped domains as a function of source-drain and gate voltage. We associate these current oscillations and diamond shaped current domains with Coulomb blockade due to single electron tunneling through a quantum dot for…
We demonstrate cavity-enhanced Raman emission from a single atomic defect in a solid. Our platform is a single silicon-vacancy center in diamond coupled with a monolithic diamond photonic crystal cavity. The cavity enables an unprecedented frequency tuning range of the Raman emission (100 GHz) that significantly exceeds the spectral inhomogeneity of silicon-vacancy centers in diamond nanostructures. We also show that the cavity selectively suppresses the phonon-induced spontaneous emission that degrades the efficiency of Raman photon generation. Our results pave the way towards photon-mediated…
