Scaling laws and universality are often associated with systems exhibiting emergent phenomena possessing a characteristic energy scale. We report nonequilibrium transport measurements on two different types of single-molecule transistor (SMT) devices in the Kondo regime. The conductance at low bias and temperature adheres to a scaling function characterized by two parameters. This result, analogous to that reported recently in semiconductor dots with Kondo temperatures two orders of magnitude lower, demonstrates the universality of this scaling form. We compare the extracted values of the scaling coefficients to previous experimental and theoretical results.
We investigate the effects of voltage induced spin-relaxation in a quantum dot in the Kondo regime. Using nonequilibrium perturbation theory, we determine the joint effect of self-energy and vertex corrections to the conduction electron T-matrix in the limit of transport voltage much larger than temperature. The logarithmic divergences, developing near the different chemical potentials of the leads, are found to be cut off by spin-relaxation rates, implying that the nonequilibrium Kondo-problem remains at weak coupling as long as voltage is much larger than the Kondo temperature.
We give a brief review of the Kondo effect and exactly solve the nonequilibrium Kondo problem at the special point in the parameter space of the model with spin-dependent chemical potentials. Using the obtained solution, we compute several experimentally observable quantities: charge current, spin current and magnetic properties. Applications to the physically important cases such as the case where the impurity spin is placed in between two ferromagnetically polarized leads are discussed.
We develop a nonperturbative dynamical theory (NDT) to calculate the retarded Green's function under nonequilibrium conditions. The NDT is particularly useful for treating nonequilibrium transport problems in systems with strong correlation. We apply our NDT to the well-known single-impurity Anderson model at equilibrium to determine its feasibility. We then apply it to a nonequilibrium transport problem in a system with Kondo coupling. An Anderson model with two metallic reservoirs is studied to understand the phenomenon of Kondo-peak splitting in a single-electron transistor of mesoscopic si…
We extend a perturbative, nonequilibrium renormalization group approach to multi-orbital systems and apply it for studying transport through two parallel quantum dots coupled electrostatically. In general, the conductance shows pronounced Kondoesque peaks at three voltages. One of these peaks disappears if, as in some experiments, one of the dots is decoupled from one of the two leads. For an asymmetric coupling to the leads, also negative differential conductances are possible. This is a genuine nonequilibrium effect, accompanying the Kondoesque peaks. Moreover, a criterion to distinguish spi…
A leading candidate for experimental confirmation of the non-local quantum dynamics of Majorana fermions is the topological Kondo effect, predicted for mesoscopic superconducting islands connected to metallic leads. We identify an anisotropic, Toulouse-like, limit of the topological Kondo problem where the full nonequilibrium conductance and shot noise can be calculated exactly. Near the Kondo fixed point, we find novel asymptotic features including a universal conductance scaling function, and fractional charge quantisation observable via the Fano factor. In the universal regime, our results …
We investigate the dynamical and steady-state spin response of the nonequilibrium Anderson model to magnetic fields, bias voltage, and temperature using a numerically exact method combining a bold-line quantum Monte Carlo technique with the memory function formalism. We obtain converged results in a range of previously inaccessible regimes, in particular the crossover to the Kondo domain. We provide detailed predictions for novel nonequilibrium phenomena, including non-monotonic temperature dependence of observables at high bias voltage and oscillatory quench dynamics at high magnetic fields.
In the previous paper, we found a series expression for the average electric current following a quench in the nonequilibrium Kondo model driven by a bias voltage. Here, we evaluate the steady state current in the regimes of strong and weak coupling. We obtain the standard leading order results in the usual weak antiferromagnetic regime, and we also find a new universal regime of strong ferromagnetic coupling with Kondo temperature $T_K = D e^{\frac{3π^2}{8} ρJ}$. In this regime, the differential conductance $dI/dV$ reaches the unitarity limit $2e^2/h$ asymptotically at large voltage or temper…
We investigate the time-dependent Kondo effect in a single-molecule magnet (SMM) strongly coupled to metallic electrodes. Describing the SMM by a Kondo model with large spin S > 1/2, we analyze the underscreening of the local moment and the effect of anisotropy terms on the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization. Underscreening by single-channel Kondo processes leads to a logarithmically slow relaxation, while finite uniaxial anisotropy causes a saturation of the SMM's magnetization. Additional transverse anisotropy terms induce quantum spin tunneling and a pseudospin-1/2 Kondo effect sensit…
We investigate Kondo correlations in a quantum dot with normal and superconducting electrodes, where a spin bias voltage is applied across the device and the local interaction $U$ is either attractive or repulsive. When the spin current is blockaded in the large-gap regime, this nonequilibrium strongly-correlated problem maps into an equilibrium model solvable by the numerical renormalization group method. The Kondo spectra with characteristic splitting due to the nonequilibrium spin accumulation are thus obtained at high precision. It is shown that while the bias-induced decoherence of the sp…
The Kondo effect, a hallmark of strong correlation physics, is characterized by the formation of an extended cloud of singlet states around magnetic impurities at low temperatures. While many implications of the Kondo cloud's existence have been verified, the existence of the singlet cloud itself has not been directly demonstrated. We suggest a route for such a demonstration by considering an observable that has no classical analog, but is still experimentally measurable: "singlet weights", or projections onto particular entangled two-particle states. Using approximate theoretical arguments, w…
Using the modified perturbation theory, we theoretically study the nonequilibrium Andreev transport through a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting leads (N-QD-S), which is strongly influenced by the Kondo and superconducting correlations. From the numerical calculation, we find that the renormalized couplings between the leads and the dot in the equilibrium states characterize the peak formation in the nonequilibrium differential conductance. In particular, in the Kondo regime, the enhancement of the Andreev transport via a Kondo resonance occurs in the differential conductance at…
In this work we analyze the nonequilibrium transport through a quantum impurity (quantum dot or molecule) attached to ferromagnetic leads by using a hybrid numerical renormalization group-time-dependent density matrix renormalization group thermofield quench approach. For this, we study the bias dependence of the differential conductance through the system, which shows a finite zero-bias peak, characteristic of the Kondo resonance and reminiscent of the equilibrium local density of states. In the non-equilibrium settings, the resonance in the differential conductance is also found to decrease w…
We theoretically study the nonequilibrium thermoelectric transport properties of a strongly-correlated molecule (or quantum dot) embedded in a tunnel junction. Assuming that the coupling of the molecule to the contacts is asymmetric, we determine the nonlinear current driven by the voltage and temperature gradients by using the perturbation theory. However, the subsystem consisting of the molecule strongly coupled to one of the contacts is solved by using the numerical renormalization group method, which allows for accurate description of Kondo correlations. We study the temperature gradient a…
We investigate the nonequilibrum transport properties of a quantum dot when spin flip processes compete with the formation of a Kondo resonance in the presence of ferromagnetic leads. Based upon the Anderson Hamiltonian in the strongly interacting limit, we predict a splitting of the differential conductance when the spin flip scattering amplitude is of the order of the Kondo temperature. We discuss how the relative orientation of the lead magnetizations strongly influences the electronic current and the shot noise in a nontrivial way. Furthermore, we find that the zero-bias tunneling magnetor…
We study the Kondo effect in the electron transport through a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads, using a real-time diagrammatic technique which provides a systematic description of the nonequilibrium dynamics of a system with strong local electron correlations. We evaluate the theory in an extension of the `resonant tunneling approximation', introduced earlier, by introducing the self-energy of the off-diagonal component of the reduced propagator in spin space. In this way we develop a charge and spin conserving approximation that accounts not only for Kondo correlations but also for …
The scaling properties of the conductance of a Kondo impurity connected to two leads that are in or out of equilibrium has been extensively studied, both experimentally and theoretically. From these studies, a consensus has emerged regarding the analytic expression of the scaling function. The question addressed in this brief report concerns the properties of the experimentally measurable coefficient $α$ present in the term describing the leading dependence of the conductance on $eV/T_K$, where $V$ is the source-drain voltage and $T_K$ the Kondo temperature. We study the dependence of $α$ on t…
The linear and nonlinear transport through a multi-level lateral quantum dot connected to two leads is investigated using a generalized finite-$U$ slave-boson mean field approach. For a two-level quantum dot, our calculation demonstrates a substantial conductance enhancement near the degeneracy point of the spin singlet and triplet states, a non-monotonic temperature-dependence of conductance and a sharp dip and nonzero bias maximum of the differential conductance. These agree well with recent experiment observations. This two-stage Kondo effect in an out-of-equilibrium situation is attributed…
We study the single-impurity Anderson model out of equilibrium under the influence of a bias voltage $ϕ$ and a magnetic field $B$. We investigate the interplay between the shift ($ω_B$) of the Kondo peak in the spin-resolved density of states (DOS) and the one ($ϕ_B$) of the conductance anomaly. In agreement with experiments and previous theoretical calculations we find that, while the latter displays a rather linear behavior with an almost constant slope as a function of $B$ down to the Kondo scale, the DOS shift first features a slower increase reaching the same behavior as $ϕ_B$ only for $|…
Motivated by recent experiments on molecular quantum dots we investigate the relaxation of pure spin states when coupled to metallic leads. Under suitable conditions these systems are well described by a ferromagnetic Kondo model. Using two recently developed theoretical approaches, the time-dependent numerical renormalization group and an extended ow equation method, we calculate the real-time evolution of a Kondo spin into its partially screened steady state. We obtain exact analytical results which agree well with numerical implementations of both methods. Analytical expressions for the ste…
We analyze the nonequilibrium transport properties of a parallel double quantum dot in terms of its full counting statistics (FCS). The parameters of the setup are assumed to be such that both subsystems are driven into the Kondo regime. After a series of transformations the Hamiltonian is then mapped onto a Majorana resonant level model, which effectively describes the Toulouse point of the respective double impurity two-terminal Kondo model. Its FCS is then obtained at arbitrary constellation of voltage, temperature, and local magnetic fields. We identify two different transport processes co…
We apply a recently developed nonequilibrium real-time renormalization group method in frequency space to describe nonlinear quantum transport through a small fermionic quantum system coupled weakly to several reservoirs via spin and/or orbital fluctuations. We provide an analytic and well-controlled procedure to solve the RG equations in the weak-coupling regime. Within a 2-loop analysis, we derive analytic formulas for the nonlinear conductance and the kernel determining the time evolution of the reduced density matrix. Most importantly, we present a consistent formalism how the RG flow is c…
Claims by Kroha and Zawadowski in cond-mat/0105026 on inadequate approximations and an incorrect statement in cond-mat/0102150 are shown to be based on oversimplified estimates and a false quotation.
Recently we have developed a theory of Keldysh formalism for mesoscopic systems. The resulting nonequilibrium Kubo formula for differential conductance makes it possible to propose the new formula of shot noise $S_h$, and thus to study shot noise in correlated systems at any temperature and any bias voltage. Employing this new approach, we analyze shot noise in the Kondo regime through a quantum dot for the symmetric case at zero temperature. Using the renormalized perturbation theory, we prove that in the leading order of bias voltage $S_h$ equal to noise power at zero temperature conventiona…
We study the energy relaxation of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities. The renormalization of the exchange interaction of Kondo impurities coupled to conduction electrons is extended to the case of a nonequilibrium electron distribution, which is determined self-consistently from a Boltzmann equation with a collision term due to Kondo impurity mediated electron-electron scattering. The approach leads to predictions in quantitative agreement with recent experiments by Pothier et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 3490 (1997)].
We present here the details of a method [A. B. Culver and N. Andrei, Phys. Rev. B 103, L201103 (2021)] for calculating the time-dependent many-body wavefunction that follows a local quench. We apply the method to the voltage-driven nonequilibrium Kondo model to find the exact time-evolving wavefunction following a quench where the dot is suddenly attached to the leads at $t=0$. The method, which does not use Bethe ansatz, also works in other quantum impurity models and may be of wider applicability. We show that the long-time limit (with the system size taken to infinity first) of the time-evo…
We construct a number($n$)-resolved master equation (ME) approach under self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) for noise spectrum calculation. The formulation is essentially non-Markovian and incorporates properly the interlay of the multi-tunneling processes and many-body correlations. We apply this approach to the challenging nonequilibrium Kondo system and predict a profound nonequilibrium Kondo signature in the shot noise spectrum. The proposed $n$-SCBA-ME scheme goes completely beyond the scope of the Born-Markovian master equation approach, in the sense of being applicable to the shot…
Low-temperature transport through molecules with effectively negative charging energy U exhibits a charge-Kondo effect. We explore this regime analytically by establishing an exact mapping between the negative-U and the positive-U Anderson models, which is suitable for the description of nonequilibrium transport. We employ this mapping to demonstrate the intimate relation between nonequilibrium tranport in the spin-Kondo and charge-Kondo regimes, and derive analytical expressions for the nonlinear current-voltage chracteristics as well as the shot noise in the latter regime. Applying the mappi…
In this report, we describe a recent development in a Fermi liquid theory for the Kondo effect in quantum dots under a finite bias voltage $V$. Applying the microscopic theory of Yamada and Yosida to a nonequilibrium steady state, we derive the Ward identities for the Keldysh Green's function, and determine the low-energy behavior of the differential conductance $dI/dV$ exactly up to terms of order $(eV)^2$ for the symmetric Anderson model. These results are deduced from the fact that the Green's function at the impurity site is a functional of a nonequilibrium distribution $f_{\text{eff}}(ω)$…
The present work is based on the nonequilibrium perturbative formalism. There the self-energies are derived up to the forth-order. In consequence, it proves that the nonequilibrium (real-time) perturbative expansion can be connected with the Matsubara imaginary-time perturbative expansion for equilibrium. As the numerical results, the Kondo resonance still disappears for bias voltage exceeding the Kondo temperatures, as observed in experiments of two terminal systems.
We analyze universal transport properties of a strongly interacting quantum dot in the Kondo regime when the quantum dot is placed in an external magnetic field. The quantum dot is described by the asymmetric Anderson model with the spin degeneracy removed by the magnetic field resulting in the Zeeman splitting. Using an analytical expression for the tunneling density of states found from a Keldysh effective field theory, we obtain in the whole energy range the universal differential conductance and analytically demonstrate its Fermi-liquid and logarithmic behavior at low- and high-energies, r…
The peculiar behavior of Kondo peak splitting under a magnetic field and bias can be explained by calculating the nonequilibrium retarded Green's function via the nonperturbative dynamical theory (NDT). In the NDT, the application of a lead-dot-lead system reveals that new resonant tunneling levels are activated near the Fermi level and the conventional Kondo peak at the Fermi level diminishes when a bias is applied. Magnetic field causes asymmetry in the spectral density and transforms the new resonant peak into a major peak whose behavior explains all the features of the nonequilibrium Kondo…
We study nonequilibrium generation of spin-dependent transport through a single-level quantum dot embedded in a ring with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We consider nonmagnetic systems, involving no magnetic field nor ferromagnetic leads. It is theoretically predicted that large spin-dependent current occurs as a combined effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the Kondo effect, and nonequilibrium effect, without using magnetic field or material. The phenomenon is viewed as a new nonequilibrium correlation effect that disappears when either interaction or finite bias is absent. We show h…
We have used an electromigration technique to fabricate C$_{60}$-based single-molecule transistors. We detail the process statistics and the protocols used to infer the successful formation of a single-molecule transistor. At low temperatures each transistor acts as a single-electron device in the Coulomb blockade regime. Resonances in the differential conductance indicate vibrational excitations consistent with a known mode of C$_{60}$. In several devices we observe conductance features characteristic of the Kondo effect, a coherent many-body state comprising an unpaired spin on the molecule …
We study the nonequilibrium formation of a spin screening cloud that accompanies the quenching of a local magnetic moment immersed in a Fermi sea at zero temperature. Based on high precision density matrix renormalization group results for the interacting single impurity Anderson model we discuss the real time evolution after a quantum quench in the impurity-reservoir hybridization using time evolving block decimation. We report emergent length and time scales in the spatiotemporal structure of non-local correlation functions in the spin- and the charge density channel. At equilibrium, our dat…
The effect of a magnetic field on the equilibrium spectral and transport properties of a single-molecule junction is studied using the numerical renormalization group method. The molecule is described by the Anderson-Holstein model in which a single vibrational mode is coupled to the electron density. The effect of an applied magnetic field on the conductance in the Kondo regime is qualitatively different in the weak and strong electron-phonon coupling regimes. In the former case, the Kondo resonance is split and the conductance is strongly suppressed by a magnetic field $g mu_B B \gtrsim k_BT…
The theory of quantum transport through a dot under a finite bias voltage is developed using perturbation theory in the Keldysh formalism. It is found that the Kondo resonance splits into double peaks when the voltage exceeds the Kondo temperature, $eV>k_B T_K $, which leads to the appearance of a second peak in conductance, in addition to the zero-bias peak. The possible relevance of the new peak to the 0.7 conductance anomaly observed in quantum point contact is discussed.
We calculate the nonequilibrium conductance through a molecule or a quantum dot in which the occupation of the relevant electronic level is coupled with intensity $λ$ to a phonon mode, and also to two conducting leads. The system is described by the Anderson-Holstein Hamiltonian. We solve the problem using the Keldysh formalism and the non-crossing approximation (NCA) for both, the electron-electron and the electron-phonon interactions. We obtain a moderate decrease of the Kondo temperature $T_K$ with $λ$ for fixed renormalized energy of the localized level $\tilde{E_d}$. The meaning and value…
We investigate the electronic transport through a molecule in the Kondo regime. The tunneling between the electrode and the molecule is asymmetrically modulated by the oscillations of the molecule, i.e., if the molecule gets closer to one of the electrodes the tunneling to that electrode will increase while for the other electrode it will decrease. The system is described by a two-channel Anderson model with phonon-assisted hybridization, which is solved with the Wilson numerical renormalization group method. The results for several functional forms of tunneling modulation are presented. For a…
When a cerocene molecule is chemisorbed on metallic substrate, or when an asymmetric double dot is hybridized with itinerant electrons, its singlet ground state crosses its lowly excited triplet state, leading to a competition between the Zhang-Rice mechanism of singlet-triplet splitting in a confined cluster and the Kondo effect (which accompanies the tunneling through quantum dot under a Coulomb blockade restriction). The rich physics of an underscreened S=1 Kondo impurity in the presence of low-lying triplet/singlet excitations is exposed. Estimates of the magnetic susceptibility and the el…
A single molecule break junction device serves as a tunable model system for probing the many body Kondo state. The low-energy properties of this state are commonly described in terms of a Kondo model, where the response of the system to different perturbations is characterized by a single emergent energy scale, k_B*T_K. Comparisons between different experimental systems have shown issues with numerical consistency. With a new constrained analysis examining the dependence of conductance on temperature, bias, and magnetic field simultaneously, we show that these deviations can be resolved by pr…
In this paper we study the thermopower of a quantum dot connected to two leads in the presence of Kondo correlation by employing a modified second-order perturbation scheme at nonequilibrium. A simple scheme, Ng's ansatz [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 487 (1996)], is adopted to calculate nonequilibrium distribution Green's function and its validity is further checked with regard to the Onsager relation. Numerical results demonstrate that the sign of the thermopower can be changed by tuning the energy level of the quantum dot, leading to a oscillatory behavior with a suppressed magnitude due to th…
We analyze the nonequilibrium Kondo model at finite voltage and temperature by using a new formulation of the real-time renormalization group method with the Laplace variable as the flow parameter. We evaluate the energy-dependent spin relaxation rate and nonlinear conductance, and derive an approximate form for the universal line shape for the latter in the whole crossover regime from weak to strong coupling. The results are shown to agree well with exact methods in equilibrium, Fermi-liquid theory, weak-coupling expansions, and recent experiments. For the transient spin dynamics we find a un…
Starting from exact eigenstates for a symmetric ring, we derive a low-energy effective generalized Anderson Hamiltonian which contains two spin doublets with opposite momenta and a singlet for the neutral molecule. For benzene, the singlet (doublets) represent the ground state of the neutral (singly charged) molecule. We calculate the non-equilibrium conductance through a benzene molecule, doped with one electron or a hole (i.e. in the Kondo regime), and connected to two conducting leads at different positions. We solve the problem using the Keldysh formalism and the non-crossing approximation…
Quantum transport is studied for the nonequilibrium Anderson impurity model at zero temperature employing the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree theory within the second quantization representation (ML-MCTDH-SQR) of Fock space. To adress both linear and nonlinear conductance in the Kondo regime, two new techniques of the ML-MCTDH-SQR simulation methodology are introduced: (i) the use of correlated initial states, which is achieved by imaginary time propagation of the overall Hamiltonian at zero voltage and (ii) the adoption of the logarithmic discretization of the electronic …
Inelastic effects in the Coulomb blockade and Kondo regimes of electron transport through molecular junctions are considered within a simple nonequilibrium equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. The scheme is self-consistent, and can qualitatively reproduce the main experimental observations of vibrational features in Coulomb blockade [H.Park et al., Nature 407, 57 (2000)] and Kondo [L.H.Yu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 266802 (2004)] regimes. Considerations similar to the equilibrium EOM approach by Meir et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 3048 (1991); ibid. 70, 2601 (1993)] are used on the Keldysh conto…
We use a combination of first principles many-body methods and the numerical renormalization-group technique to study the Kondo regime of cobalt-porphyrin compounds adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface. We find the Kondo temperature to be highly sensitive to both molecule charging and distance to the surface, which can explain the variations observed in recent scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. We discuss the importance of many-body effects in the molecular electronic structure controlling this phenomenon and suggest scenarios where enhanced temperatures can be achieved in experiments.
Using a state-of-the art combination of density functional theory and impurity solver techniques we present a complete and parameter-free picture of the Kondo effect in the high-spin ($S=3/2$) coordination complex known as Manganese Phthalocyanine adsorbed on the Pb(111) surface. We calculate the correlated electronic structure and corresponding tunnel spectrum and find an asymmetric Kondo resonance, as recently observed in experiments. Contrary to previous claims, the Kondo resonance stems from only one of three possible Kondo channels with origin in the Mn 3d-orbitals, its peculiar asymmetri…
Electron transport through a strongly correlated quantum dot (QD) embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring is investigated with the aid of the finite-U slave-boson mean-field (SBMF) approach extended to nonequilibrium regime. A nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of the mean-field Hamiltonian is constructed with the aid of the C*-algebraic approach for studying infinitely extended systems. In the linear response regime, the Fano-Kondo resonances and AB oscillations of the conductance obtained from the SBMF approach are in good agreement with those from the numerical renormalization group techniqu…
We analyze the spectral function of the single-impurity two-terminal Anderson model at finite voltage using the recently developed diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo technique as well as perturbation theory. In the (particle-hole-)symmetric case we find an excellent agreement of the numerical data with the perturbative results of second order up to interaction strengths $U/Γ\approx 2$, where $Γ$ is the transparency of the impurity-electrode interface. The analytical results are obtained in form of the nonequilibrium self-energy for which we present explicit formulas in the closed form at arbitra…
We consider an open quantum system in contact with fermionic metallic reservoirs in a nonequilibrium setup. For the case of spin, orbital or potential fluctuations, we present a systematic formulation of real-time renormalization group at finite temperature, where the complex Fourier variable of an effective Liouvillian is used as flow parameter. We derive a universal set of differential equations free of divergencies written as a systematic power series in terms of the frequency-independent two-point vertex only, and solve it in different truncation orders by using a universal set of boundary…
We study a $3$-level quantum dot in the singly occupied cotunneling regime coupled via a generic tunneling matrix to several multi-channel leads in equilibrium or nonequilibrium. We derive an effective model where also each reservoir has three channels labelled by the quark flavors $u$, $d$ and $s$ with an effective d.o.s. polarized w.r.t. an eight-dimensional $F$-spin corresponding to the eight generators of $SU(3)$. In equilibrium we perform a standard poor man scaling analysis and show that tunneling via virtual intermediate states induces flavor fluctuations on the dot which become $SU(3)$…
Electron tunneling through a double quantum dot molecule, in the Kondo regime, under the effect of a magnetic field and an applied voltage, is studied. This system possesses a complex response to the applied fields characterized by a tristable solution for the conductance. The different nature of the solutions are studied in and out thermodynamical equilibrium. It is shown that the interdot coupling and the fields can be used to control the region of multistability. The mean-field slave-boson formalism is used to obtain the solution of the problem.
Whether a small quantum mechanical system is able to equilibrate with its environment once an external local perturbation drives it out of thermal equilibrium is a central question which cuts across many different fields of science. Here we consider such a problem for a correlated quantum impurity coupled to a fermionic reservoir and driven out of equilibrium by local quantum quenches such as those recently realized in optical absorption experiments on single quantum dots. We argue that equilibration in this problem is deeply connected to the occurrence of Kondo Effect at low energy and that a…
The fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) plays a fundamental role in understanding quantum many-body problems. However, its applicability is limited to equilibrium systems and it does in general not hold in nonequilibrium situations. This violation of the FDT is an important tool for studying nonequilibrium physics. In this paper we present results for the violation of the FDT in the Kondo model where the impurity spin is frozen for all negative times, and set free to relax at positive times. We derive exact analytical results at the Toulouse point, and results within a controlled approximati…
We examine the recently proposed imaginary-time formulation for strongly correlated steady-state nonequilibrium for its range of validity and discuss significant improvements in the analytic continuation of the Matsubara voltage as well as the fermionic Matsubara frequency. The discretization error in the conventional Hirsch-Fye algorithm has been compensated in the Fourier transformation with reliable small frequency behavior of self-energy. Here we give detailed discussions for generalized spectral representation ansatz by including high order vertex corrections and its numerical analytic co…
We study nonequilibrium thermoelectric transport properties of a correlated impurity connected to two leads for temperatures below the Kondo scale. At finite bias, for which a current flows across the leads, we investigate the differential response of the current to a temperature gradient. In particular, we compare the influence of a bias voltage and of a finite temperature on this thermoelectric response. This is of interest from a fundamental point of view to better understand the two different decoherence mechanisms produced by a bias voltage and by temperature. Our results show that in thi…
Quantum dots connected to larger systems containing a continuum of states like charge reservoirs allow the theoretical study of many-body effects such as the Coulomb blockade and the Kondo effect. Here, we analyze the nonequilibrium Kondo effect and transport phenomena in a quantum dot coupled to pure monolayer graphene electrodes under external magnetic fields for finite on-site Coulomb interaction. The system is described by the pseudogap Anderson Hamiltonian. We use the equation of motion technique to determine the retarded Green's function of the quantum dot. An analytical formula for the …
We study the electronic transport in a double quantum dot structure connected to leads in the Kondo regime for both series and parallel arrangements. By applying a finite-U slave boson technique in the mean field approximation we explore the effect of level degeneracy in the conductance through the system. Our results show that for the series connection, as the energy difference of the localized dot levels increases, the tunneling via the Kondo state is destroyed. For the parallel configuration, we find an interesting interplay of state symmetry and conductance. Our results are in good agremen…
