A general method for proving continuity of the von Neumann entropy on subsets of positive trace-class operators is considered. This makes it possible to re-derive the known conditions for continuity of the entropy in more general forms and to obtain several new conditions. The method is based on a particular approximation of the von Neumann entropy by an increasing sequence of concave continuous unitary invariant functions defined using decompositions into finite rank operators. The existence of this approximation is a corollary of a general property of the set of quantum states as a convex topological space called the strong stability property. This is considered in the first part of the paper.
This paper is an introduction to the von Neumann entropy in a historic approach. Von Neumann's gedanken experiment is repeated, which led him to the formula of thermodynamic entropy of a statistical operator. In the analysis of his ideas we stress the role of superselection sectors and summarize von Neumann's knowledge about quantum mechanical entropy. The final part of the paper is devoted to important developments discovered long after von Neumann's work. Subadditivity and the interpretation of the von Neumann entropy as channel capacity are among those.

Quantum bialgebras derivable from Uq(sl2) which contain idempotents and von Neumann regular Cartan-like generators are introduced and investigated. We study the structure of the generator of a symmetric, conservative quantum dynamical semigroup with norm-bounded generator on a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful semifinite trace. For von Neumann algebras with abelian commutant (i.e. type I von Neumann algebras), we give a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the generator of such a semigroup to be written as a sum of square of self-adjoint derivations of the von Neumann algebra. In this paper, we present an infinitesimal version of the Stone-von Neumann Theorem. This work was motivated by the need to formulate the uniqueness property of the Heisenberg Commutation Relation purely in terms of unbounded operators.
We make a systematic study of standard $f$-divergences in general von Neumann algebras. An important ingredient of our study is to extend Kosaki's variational expression of the relative entropy to an arbitary standard $f$-divergence, from which most of the important properties of standard $f$-divergences follow immediately. In a similar manner we give a comprehensive exposition on the Rényi divergence in von Neumann algebra. Some results on relative hamiltonians formerly studied by Araki and Donald are improved as a by-product.
We obtain a number of explicit estimates for quasi-norms of pseudo-differential operators in the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_q$ with $0<q\le 1$. The estimates are applied to derive semi-classical bounds for operators with smooth or non-smooth symbols.
It is shown that the Novikov inequalities for critical points of closed 1-forms hold with the von Neumann Betti numbers replacing the Novikov numbers. In this article, we prove various smooth uncertainty principles on von Neumann bi-algebras, which unify numbers of uncertainty principles on quantum symmetries, such as subfactors, and fusion bi-algebras etc, studied in quantum Fourier analysis. We also obtain Widgerson-Wigderson type uncertainty principles for von Neumann bi-algebras. Moreover, we give a complete answer to a conjecture proposed by A. Wigderson and Y. Wigderson.
