We report the observation of almost perfect light tunneling inhibition at the edge and inside laser-written waveguide arrays due to band collapse. When the refractive index of the guiding channels is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in adjacent guides, light is trapped in the excited waveguide over a long distance due to resonances. The phenomenon can be used for tuning the localization threshold power.
We address two-dimensional waveguide arrays where light tunneling into neighboring waveguides may be effectively suppressed by out-of-phase harmonic modulation of the refractive index in neighboring waveguides at suitable frequencies. Genuine two-dimensional features, such as anisotropic diffraction engineering, diffraction-free propagation along selected directions in the transverse plane and tunneling inhibition for multi-channel vortices, are shown to occur.
We consider evolution of multichannel excitations in longitudinally modulated waveguide arrays where refractive index either oscillates out-of-phase in all neighboring waveguides or when it is modulated in phase in several central waveguides surrounded by out-of-phase oscillating neighbors. Both types of modulations allow resonant inhibition of light tunneling, but only the modulation of latter type conserves the internal structure of multichannel excitations. We show that parameter regions where light tunneling inhibition is possible depend on the symmetry and structure of multichannel excita…
We consider waveguide array in which defect channels with reduced refractive index are spaced periodically and the light guiding is achieved due to Bragg reflection. We show that tunneling between defects can be inhibited using out-of-phase longitudinal modulation of refractive index exclusively in defect channels. Tunneling inhibition is almost perfect for strongly localized modes with propagation constants close to the gap center.
We consider light tunneling inhibition in periodic array of optical couplers due to the specially designed longitudinal and transverse modulation of the refractive index. We show that local out-of-phase longitudinal modulation of refractive index in channels of directional couplers in combination with the global refractive index modulation between adjacent couplers allow simultaneous suppression of both local and global energy tunneling inside each coupler and between adjacent couplers. This enables localization of light in single waveguide despite the remarkable difference of corresponding lo…
We show that light tunneling inhibition may take place in suitable dynamically modulated waveguide arrays for light spots whose features are remarkably smaller than the wavelength of light. We found that tunneling between neighboring waveguides can be suppressed for specific frequencies of the out-of-phase refractive index modulation, affording undistorted propagation of the input subwavelength light spots over hundreds of Rayleigh lengths. Tunneling inhibition turns out to be effective only when the waveguide separation in the array is above a critical threshold. Inclusion of a weak focusing …
Geometric phases appear ubiquitously in many and diverse areas of physical sciences, ranging from classical and molecular dynamics to quantum mechanics and solid-state physics. In the realm of optics, similar phenomena are known to emerge in the form of a Pancharatnam-Berry phase whenever the polarization state traces a closed contour on the Poincare sphere. While this class of geometric phases has been extensively investigated in both free-space and guided wave systems, the observation of similar effects in photon-tunneling arrangements has so far remained largely unexplored. Here, for the fi…
We report the enhancement of the effect of transverse localization of light (TL) in presence of a weak longitudinal modulation of refractive index in disordered waveguide lattices. In our chosen lattices, tunneling inhibition along length favors to achieve the diffraction-free propagation along with the simultaneous presence of transverse disorder. Results will be useful to tune the threshold value of disorder to achieve localized light.
We investigate the effects of disorder on single particle time-evolution and two-particle correlations in an array of evanescently coupled waveguides with position-dependent tunneling rates. In the clean limit, the energy spectrum of such an array is widely tunable. In the presence of a Hermitian on-site or tunneling disorder, we find that the localization of a wave packet is highly sensitive to this energy spectrum. In particular, for an input confined to a single waveguide, we show that the fraction of light localized to the original waveguide depends on the tunneling profile. We compare the…
We theoretically report an analog of photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) in a periodically driven lattice array without a static biased potential by studying a three-channel waveguide system. This analog of PAT can be achieved by only periodically modulating the top waveguide and adjusting the distance between the bottom and its adjacent waveguide. It is numerically shown that the PAT resonances also exist in the five-channel waveguide system and probably exist in the waveguide arrays with other odd numbers of waveguides, but they will become weak as the number of waveguides increases. With origin…
We report on the experimental realization of a photonic system that simulates the one-dimensional two-particle Hubbard model. This analogy is realized by means of two-dimensional arrays of coupled optical waveguides, fabricated using femtosecond laser inscription. By tuning the analogous "interaction strength", we reach the strongly-interacting regime of the Hubbard Hamiltonian, and demonstrate the suppression of standard tunneling for individual "particles". In this regime, the formation of bound states is identified through the direct observation of pair tunneling. We then demonstrate the co…
We investigate the single-particle time evolution and two-particle quantum correlations in a one-dimensional $N$-site lattice with a site-dependent nearest neighbor tunneling function $t_α(k)=t_0[k(N-k)]^{α/2}$. Since the bandwidth and the energy levels spacings for such a lattice both depend upon $α$, we show that the observable properties of a wavepacket, such as its spread and the relative phases of its constitutents, vary dramatically as $α$ is varied from positive to negative values. We also find that the quantum correlations are exquisitely sensitive to the form of the tunneling function…
We have studied the optical oscillation and tunneling of light waves in optical waveguide ladders formed by two coupled planar optical waveguide arrays. For the band structure, a mid-zone gap is formed due to band hybridization and its wavenumber position can be tuned throughout the whole Brillouin zone, which is different from the Bragg gap. By imposing a gradient in the propagation constant in each array, Bloch-Zener oscillation (BZO) is realized with Zener tunneling between the bands occurring at mid zone, which is contrary to the common BZO with tunneling at the center or edge of the Brill…
Energy is a vital resource and hence there is a continuous strive to improve upon existing technologies and to find new ones that address that basic need. The conversion of thermal energy is the primary method of generating electrical energy from a broad range of sources, for example fossil fuels, solar thermal, geothermal, and nuclear energy. A common need in all cases is the ability to efficiently extract the generated electromagnetic and thermal energy and to convert it to electricity. The current methods of thermal energy extraction are based on heat engines, thermoelectric and thermophoto…
We have studied the propagation and Zener tunneling of light in the binary parabolic optical waveguide array (BPOWA), which consists of two evanescently coupled dissimilar optical waveguides. Due to Bragg reflections, BPOWA attains two minibands separated by a minigap at the zone boundary. Various coherent superpositions of optical oscillations and Zener tunneling occur for different parameters on the phase diagram. In particular, Bloch-Zener oscillation and a different type of Bloch-dipole-Zener oscillation are obtained by the field-evolution analysis. The results may have potential applicati…
In this work, we consider a semi-infinite discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with saturable nonlinearity driven at one edge by a driving force. The equation models the dynamics of coupled photorefractive waveguide arrays. It has been reported that when the frequency of the driving force is in the forbidden band, energy can be transmitted along the lattices provided that the driving amplitude is above a critical value. This nonlinear tunneling is called supratransmission. Here, we explain the source of supratransmission using geometric illustrations. Approximations to the critical amplitud…
The integration of a double barrier resonant tunneling diode within a unipolar optical waveguide provides electrical gain over a wide bandwidth. Due to the non-linearities introduced by the double barrier resonant tunneling diode an unipolar InGaAlAs/InP optical waveguide can be employed both as optical modulator and optical detector. The modeling results of a device operating as optical modulator agree with preliminary experimental data, foreseeing for an optimized device modulation depths up to 23 dB with chirp parameter between -1 and 0 in the wavelength range analyzed (1520 nm - 1600 nm).

Zener tunneling in a binary array of coupled optical waveguides with transverse index gradient is shown to produce a sequence of regular or irregular beam splitting and beam recombination events superimposed to Bloch oscillations. These periodic or aperiodic Zener-Bloch oscillations provide a clear and visualizable signature in an optical system of coherent multiband dynamics encountered in solid-state or matter-wave systems
Recently, waveguide lattices with non-uniform tunneling amplitudes have been explored due to their myriad tunable properties, many of which arise from the extended nature of their eigenstates in the absence of disorder. Here, we investigate the dynamics, localization, and parity- and time-reversal-($\mP\mT$) symmetry breaking in lattices that support only localized eigenstates in the disorder-free limit. We propose three families of tunneling profiles that lead to qualitatively different single-particle time evolution, and show that the effects of weak disorder contain signatures of the locali…
We report electro-absorption modulation of light at around 1550 nm in a unipolar InGaAlAs optical waveguide containing a InGaAs/AlAs double-barrier resonant tunneling diode (DB-RTD). The RTD peak-to-valley transition increases the electric field across the waveguide, which shifts the core material absorption band-edge to longer wavelengths via the Franz-Keldysh effect, thus changing the light-guiding characteristics of the waveguide. Low-frequency characterisation of a device shows modulation up to 28 dB at 1565 nm. When dc biased close to the negative differential conductance (NDC) region, th…
In the light of the interest in the transport of single photons in arrays of waveguides, fiber couplers, photonic crystals, etc., we consider the quantum mechanical process of the tunneling of photons through evanescently or otherwise coupled structures. We specifically examine the issue of tunneling between two structures when one structure already contains few photons. We demonstrate the possibility of both photon aided and inhibited tunneling of photons. The Bosonic nature of photons enhances the tunneling probability. We also show how the multiphoton tunneling probability can be either enh…
Slow waves and tunneling waves can meet at the cutoff wavelengths and/or transmission band edges of optical and quantum mechanical waveguides. The experimental investigation of this phenomenon, previously performed using various optical microstructures, is challenged by fabrication imperfections and material losses. Here, we demonstrate this phenomenon in situ for whispering gallery modes slowly propagating along a standard optical fiber, which possesses the record uniformity and exceptionally small transmission losses. Slow axial propagation dramatically increases the longitudinal wavelength …
We explore the coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) in a lattice array under selective in-phase harmonic modulations, in which some selected lattice sites are driven by in-phase harmonic oscillating fields and other lattice sites are undriven. Due to the occurrence of CDT, if the driving amplitude $A$ and the driving frequency $ω$ are tuned to satisfy the zeroth-order Bessel function $J_0(A/ω)=0$, the driven lattice sites are approximately decoupled with the undriven lattice sites. The CDT even takes place in lattice systems with high-order couplings between non-nearest lattice sites. By us…
We demonstrate that surface plasmon resonances excited by photon tunneling through an adjacent dielectric medium enhance photocurrent detected by a graphene photodetector. The device is created by overlaying a graphene sheet over an etched gap in a gold film deposited on glass. The detected photocurrents are compared for five different excitation wavelengths, ranging from nm to nm. The photocurrent excited with incident p-polarized light (the case for resonant surface plasmon excitation) is significantly amplified in comparison with that for s-polarized light (without surface plasmon resonance…
We demonstrate that a flat-band state in a quasi-one-dimensional rhombic lattice is robust in the presence of external drivings along the lattice axis. The lattice was formed by periodic arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides, and the external drivings were realized by modulating the paths of the waveguides. We excited a superposition of flat-band eigenmodes at the input and observed that this state does not diffract in the presence of static as well as high-frequency sinusoidal drivings. This robust localization is due to destructive interference of the analogous wavefunction and i…
