Features of anisotropic collective flow and spectral temperatures have been determined for lambda hyperons emitted from C + C collisions, at incident momentum of 4.2 AGeV/c, measured using the Propane Bubble Chamber of JINR at Dubna. Moreover, characteristics of protons and of negative pions, emitted from those collisions, have been determined and provided for comparison. The directed and elliptic flows of lambdas both agree in sign with the corresponding flows of protons. Parameters of the directed and elliptic flows for lambdas agree further, within errors, with the corresponding parameters for the co-produced protons. This contrasts an earlier finding by the E895 Collaboration of the directed flow being significantly weaker for lambdas than protons, in the much heavier Au + Au system, at comparable incident momentum. Particle spectral temperatures in the C + C collisions have been determined focusing independently on either center-of-mass energy, transverse energy or transverse momentum distributions. For either protons or negative pions, the temperatures were found to be approximately the same, no matter whether the emission of those particles was associated with lambda production or not. Results of the measurements have been compared to the results of simulations within the Quark-Gluon String Model.
The elliptic flow of Lambda hyperons has been measured by the NA49 experiment in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV. The standard method of correlating particles with an event plane has been used. Measurements of v2 near mid-rapidity are reported as a function of rapidity, centrality and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with v2 for pions and protons as well as with models predictions.
Directed flow measurements for $Λ$-hyperons are presented and compared to those for protons produced in the same Au+Au collisions (2, 4, and 6 AGeV; $b < 5 - 6$ fm). The measurements indicate that $Λ$-hyperons flow consistently in the same direction and with smaller magnitudes than those of protons. Such a strong positive flow [for $Λ$s] has been predicted in calculations which include the influence of the $Λ$-nucleon potential. The experimental flow ratio $Λ$/p is in qualitative agreement with expectations ($\sim 2/3$) from the quark counting rule at 2 AGeV but is found to decrease with incre…
STAR has performed a correlation analyses of pion-kaon and pion-proton pairs for sqrt(s_NN)=130 AGeV and sqrt(s_NN)=200 AGeV and kaon-proton, proton-Lambda and pion-Cascade pairs for AuAu collisions sqrt(s_NN)=200 AGeV. They show that average emission space-time points of pions, kaons and protons are not the same. These asymmetries are interpreted as a consequence of transverse radial expansion of the system; emission time differences explain only part of the asymmetry. Therefore our measurements independently confirm the existence of transverse radial flow. Furthermore, correlations of strang…
First results on the production of Xi and AntiXi hyperons in Pb+Pb interactions at 40 AGeV are presented. The AntiXi/Xi ratio at midrapidity is studied as a function of collision centrality. The ratio shows no significant centrality dependence within statistical errors; it ranges from 0.07 to 0.15. The AntiXi/Xi ratio for central Pb+Pb collisions increases strongly with the collision energy.
The lifetime of the Lambda hyperon in heavy hypernuclei as measured by the COSY-13 Collaboration in proton - Au, Bi and U collisions has been analysed to yield tau(Lambda) = (145 +- 11) ps. This value for tau(Lambda) is compatible with the lifetime extracted from antiproton annihilation on Bi and U targets, however, much more accurate. We find that the dependence of the lifetime tau(Lambda) on the mass of hypernuclei indicates a violation of the phenomenological Delta I = 1/2 rule known from the weak mesonic decays of strange particles. The results on transverse mass spectra of Lambda hyperons produced in all inelastic p+p and p+pbar interactions in the energy range sqrts = 3.6-1800 GeV are compiled and analyzed. The energy dependence of the mean transverse mass and the inverse slope parameter of the spectra is presented and discussed. These results should be used as a reference in the study of Lambda hyperon production in nuclear collisions.
The measurement of Lambda^0 hyperons polarization in nucleus-nucleus collisions is considered as one of possible tools to study the phase transition. Fixed target and collider experiments are discussed for the case of Lambda^0's production from Au-Au central collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} of several GeV.
We present the Anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62 GeV and 200 GeV measured with the STAR detector at RHIC. The observed Anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization is consistent with zero, what is in agreement with recent measurements of Lambda global polarization, as well as phi(1020) and K*0(892) vector mesons spin alignment with respect to the reaction plane. The possible dependence of the global polarization on relative azimuthal angle between the orbital momentum of the system and the hyperon 3-momentum is discussed. The corresponding systematic unc…
COSY with a maximum beam momentum of ~3.65 GeV/c allows the production of ground state (Lambda and Sigma) and excited hyperons (Lambda(1405), Sigma(1385) and Lambda(1520)) in elementary NN interactions. The existing data base in this field is rather poor. A systematic study of the hyperon production at COSY will result in an improvement of our understanding concerning topics like hyperon-nucleon interaction, kaon-nucleon interaction, nucleon resonances, strangeness production mechanism and structure of the Lambda(1405). Precise data on Lambda and Sigma production have been produced at the COSY…
We present the centrality dependence of Lambda and Anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=62 GeV and 200 GeV measured with the STAR detector at RHIC. Within the precision of the measurement, we observe no centrality dependence of Lambda and Anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization and within our acceptance it is consistent with zero. Different sources of systematic uncertainties (feed down effects, spin precession) are discussed and estimated. The obtained upper limit, |P_{Lambda,Anti-Lambda}| < 0.02, is compared to theoretical predictions discussed recently i…
The nonmesonic decay of the Lambda hyperon has been investigated by observation of delayed fission from heavy hypernuclei produced in proton-U collisions at Tp = 1.9 GeV. The lifetime of heavy hypernuclei with masses A approximately 220 obtained in the present work, i.e. tau = 138 +- 6 (stat.) +-m 17 (syst.) ps, is the most accurate result for heavy hypernuclei produced in proton and antiproton induced collisions on a U target so far. The large acceptance and high momentum resolution as well as the significant particle identification capabilities of the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS allow for a broad study of fluctuations and correlations in hadronic interactions. In the first part recent results on event-by-event charge and p_t fluctuations are presented. Charge fluctuations in central Pb+Pb reactions are investigated at three different beam energies (40, 80, and 158 AGeV), while for the p_t fluctuations the focus is put on the system size dependence at 158 AGeV. In the second part recent results on Bose Einstein correla…
The pp -> p K+ Y0 reaction has been studied for hyperon masses m(Y0)<1540 MeV/c2 at COSY-Juelich by using a 3.65 GeV/c circulating proton beam incident on an internal hydrogen target. Final states comprising two protons, one positively charged kaon and one negatively charged pion have been identified with the ANKE spectrometer. Such configurations are sensitive to the production of the ground state Lambda and Sigma0 hyperons as well as the Sigma0(1385) and Lambda(1405) resonances. Applying invariant- and missing-mass techniques, the two overlapping excited states could be well separated, thoug…
The elliptic flow of Lambda hyperons has been measured by the NA49 collaboration at the CERN-SPS in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with v2 for pions and protons as well as with model calculations. The studies of hyperon production performed at COSY-11 are summarized. The results of the experiments in the reaction channels pp-->pK+Lambda, pp-->pK+Sigma0, and pp-->nK+Sigma+ are shown. Excitation functions fromthreshold up to about 90MeV excess energies have been evaluated with high precision for the Lambda and Sigma0 production. The Lambdap and Sigma0p final state interactions were extracted. The Sigma+ production was measured at 13 and 60 MeV excess energies.
Strange particle production in A+A interactions at 158 AGeV is studied by the CERN experiment NA49 as a function of system size and collision geometry. Yields of charged kaons, phi and Lambda are measured and compared to those of pions in central C+C, Si+Si and centrality-selected Pb+Pb reactions. An overall increase of relative strangeness production with the size of the system is observed which does not scale with the number of participants. Arguing that rescattering of secondaries plays a minor role in small systems the observed strangeness enhancement can be related to the space-time densi…
In 1999 the CERES/NA45 ran at the CERN SPS with a beam energy of 40 GeV/nucleon. The data set comprises about 8.7 millions Pb-Au events with a trigger selection corresponding to approximately the most central 30% of the geometrical cross section. Results on low-mass electron pair analysis are presented. The upgrade of the experimental setup with the radial drift TPC has allowed to enhance hadron physics capabilities of the experiment. New results on hadron spectra (including Lambda) and flow are presented.
In the framework of the nuclear spectral function approach for incoherent primary proton-nucleon and secondary pion-nucleon production processes we study the inclusive Lambda(1520) hyperon production in the interaction of 2.83 GeV protons with nuclei. In particular, the A and momentum dependences of the absolute and relative Lambda(1520) hyperon yields are investigated in two scenarios for its in-medium width. Our model calculations show that the pion-nucleon production channel contributes distinctly to the "low-momentum" Lambda(1520) creation both in light and heavy nuclei in the chosen kinem…
A sample of Lambda's produced in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu collisions has been obtained with the EOS Time Projection Chamber at the Bevalac. Low background in the invariant mass distribution allows for the unambiguous demonstration of Lambda directed flow. The transverse mass spectrum at mid-rapidity has the characteristic shoulder-arm shape of particles undergoing radial transverse expansion. A linear dependence of Lambda multiplicity on impact parameter is observed, from which a total Lambda + Sigma^0 production cross section of $112 +/- 24 mb is deduced. Detailed comparisons with the ARC and RVUU mod…
Excited neutral hyperons Y0* produced in the pp -> p K+ Y0* reaction with a COSY beam momentum of 3.65 MeV/c have masses below 1540 MeV/c2. The ANKE spectrometer allows the simultaneous observation of different decay modes: Y0* -> pion0Sigma0, pion+-Sigma-+, pion0Lambda, K-p by measuring kaons and pions of either charge in coincidence with protons. We have found indications for a neutral excited hyperon resonance Y0* with a mass of (1480 +- 15) MeV/c2 and a width of (60 +- 15) MeV/c2. The cross section for Y0* is of the order of few hundred nanobarns. It can be either a Sigma0 or a Lambda hype…
The lifetime of the Lambda-hyperon for the nonmesonic decay Lambda N ---> N N has been determined by a measurement at COSY Juelich of the delayed fission of heavy hypernuclei produced in proton - Au collisions at T_p=1.9 GeV. It is found that heavy hypernuclei with mass numbers A= 180 +- 5 and atomic numbers Z= 74 +-2 fission with a lifetime 130ps +- 13ps (stat.) +- 15ps (syst.) . This value together with the results obtained for other heavy hypernuclei in previous investigations indicates (on the confidence level of 0.9) a violation of the phenomenological Delta I = 1/2 rule for Lambda N --->…
A generalized mass formula is used to calculate the neutron and proton drip lines of normal and lambda hypernuclei treating non-strange and strange nuclei on the same footing. Calculations suggest existence of several bound hypernuclei whose normal cores are unbound. Addition of Lambda or, Lambda-Lambda hyperon(s) to a normal nucleus is found to cause shifts of the neutron and proton driplines from their conventional limits.
This paper summarizes the yields and the emission patterns of K+ and of K- mesons measured in inclusive C+C, Ni+Ni and Au+Au collisions at incident energies from 0.6 AGeV to 2.0 AGeV using the Kaon Spectrometer KaoS at GSI. For Ni+Ni collisions at 1.5 and at 1.93 AGeV as well as for Au+Au at 1.5 AGeV detailed results of the multiplicities, of the inverse slope parameters of the energy distributions and of the anisotropies in the angular emission patterns as a function of the collision centrality are presented. When comparing transport-model calculations to the measured K+ production yields an …
Strangeness production in Au+Au collisions has been measured via the yields of K+ and K- at 6, 8 AGeV and of anti-Lambda at 10.8 AGeV beam kinetic energy in experiment E917. By varying the collision centrality and beam energy, a systematic search for indications of new phenomena and in-medium effects under high baryon density is undertaken.
We present the scaling properties of Lambda, Xi, Omega and their anti-particles produced at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at RHIC at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The yield of multi-strange baryons per participant nucleon increases from peripheral to central collisions more rapidly than the Lambda yield, which appears to correspond to an increasing strange quark density of matter produced. The value of the strange phase space occupancy factor gamma_s, obtained from a thermal model fit to the data, approaches unity for the most central collisions. We also show that the nuclear modification factors, …
New results on the production of Xi and Omega hyperons in Pb+Pb interactions at 40AGeV and Lambda at 30AGeV are presented. Transverse mass spectra as well as rapidity spectra of these hyperons are shown and compared to previously measured data at different beam energies. The energy dependence of hyperon production (4pi yields) is discussed. Additionally, the centrality dependence of Xi^{-} production at 40AGeV is presented.
The system created in non-central relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions possesses large orbital angular momentum. Due to spin-orbit coupling, particles produced in such a system could become globally polarized along the direction of the system angular momentum. We present the results of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization measurements in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=62.4 GeV and 200 GeV performed with the STAR detector at RHIC. The observed global polarization of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons in the STAR acceptance is consistent with zero within the precision of the measur…
Measurement results of photoproduced excited hyperon states using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab are shown. The invariant mass distribution of the Lambda(1405) has recently been shown to be different for each of the three Sigma pi channels that it decays to, showing that there is prominent interference between the isospin I=0 and I=1 isospin amplitudes. Measurements of the differential and total cross sections of the three hyperons Lambda(1405), Sigma0(1385), and Lambda(1520) are presented and compared. Prospects of future studies using a 12 GeV beam with the GlueX detector are briefly giv…
High-statistics cross sections for the reactions gamma + p --> K^+ + Lambda and gamma + p --> K^+ + Sigma^0 have been measured using CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies W between 1.6 and 2.53 GeV, and for -0.85 < cos theta_{K^+}^{c.m.}< +0.95. In the K^+ Lambda channel we confirm a resonance-like structure near W=1.9 GeV at backward kaon angles. The position and width of this structure change with angle, indicating that more than one resonance is likely playing a role. The K^+ Lambda channel at forward angles and all energies is well described by a t-channel scaling characteristi…
Results on $Λ$p femtoscopy are reported at the lowest energy so far. At a beam energy of 1.76A~GeV, the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $Λ$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of $Λ$ p correlations at small relative momenta. The experimental correlation function is compared to corresponding model calculations allowing the determination of the space-time extent of the $Λ$p emission source. The $Λ$p source radius is found slightly smaller than the pp correlation radius for a sim…
We report our recent effort for the extraction of resonance parameters (complex pole mass and residues etc.) associated with Lambda* and Sigma* hyperons. This was accomplished via a comprehensive partial-wave analysis of the data for K^- p --> barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, K Xi reactions from the thresholds up to W=2.1 GeV within a dynamical coupled-channels approach. The results suggest a possible existence of new narrow J^P=3/2^+ Λresonance with pole mass 1671^{+2}_{-8} -i(5^{+11}_{-2}) MeV, located close to the eta Lambda threshold. This resonance is found to be responsible for r…
The Lambda, Sigma0 and Sigma+ hyperon production in NN collisions is studied at the COSY - 11 installation in order to investigate the production mechanism as well as to extract information about the Y-N interaction.
Results are presented on hyperon and antihyperon production in Pb-Pb, pPb and pBe collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon. Lambda, Xi and Omega yields have been measured at central rapidity and medium transverse momentum as functions of the centrality of the collision. Comparing the yields in Pb-Pb to those in pBe interactions, strangeness enhancement is observed. The enhancement increases with the centrality and with the strangeness content of the hyperons, reaching a factor of about 20 for the Omega in the central Pb-Pb collisions.
Modification of neutron and proton driplines by the capture of strange hyperon(s) by normal nuclei has been investigated. A generalised mass formula (BWMH) based on the strangeness dependent extended liquid drop model is used to calculate the binding energy of normal nuclei as well as strange hypernuclei. The neutron (Sn) and proton (Sp) separation energies of all hypernuclei with neutral hyperons Lambda, double Lambda or charged hyperons Cascade(-), Theta(+) inside are calculated using BWMH mass formula. The normal neutron and proton driplines get modified due to the addition of the hyperon(s…
Sigma+ hyperon production was measured at the COSY-11 spectrometer via the p p --> n K+ Sigma+ reaction at excess energies of Q = 13 MeV and Q = 60 MeV. These measurements continue systematic hyperon production studies via the p p --> p K+ Lambda/Sigma0 reactions where a strong decrease of the cross section ratio close-to-threshold was observed. In order to verify models developed for the description of the Lambda and Sigma0 production we have performed the measurement on the Sigma+ hyperon and found unexpectedly that the total cross section is by more than one order of magnitude larger than p…
The system created in non central relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions carries large angular orbital momentum. Due to spin-orbital coupling, produced particles could be globally polarized along the direction of the system angular momentum. We present results of a measurement of Lambda hyperon global polarization in Au+Au collisions at the center of mass energies 62 and 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The observed global polarization of Lambda hyperons in the STAR acceptance is consistent with zero within the precision of the measurement. The obtained upper limit, |P_Lambda| < 0.01, …
The yield for the multi-strange $Ξ^{-}$ hyperon has been measured in 6 AGeV Au+Au collisions via reconstruction of its decay products $π^{-}$ and $Λ$, the latter also being reconstructed from its daughter tracks of $π^{-}$ and p. The measurement is rather close to the threshold for $Ξ^{-}$ production and therefore provides an important test of model predictions. The measured yield for $Ξ^{-}$ and $Λ$ are compared for several centralities. In central collisions the $Ξ^{-}$ yield is found to be in excellent agreement with statistical and transport model predictions, suggesting that multi-strange…
We report on a theoretical study of the pp->p Lambda K+ and pp->p Sigma0 K+ reactions near threshold using a chiral dynamical approach. The production process is described by single-pion and single-kaon exchange. The final state interactions of nucleon-hyperon, K-hyperon and K-nucleon systems are also taken into account. We show that our model leads to a fair description of the experimental data on the total cross section of the pp->p Lambda K+ and pp->p Sigma0 K+ reactions. We find that the experimental observed strong suppression of Sigma0 production compared to Lambda production at the same…
Hyperon production in the threshold region was studied in the reaction pp -> K+Lp using the time-of-flight spectrometer COSY-TOF. Exclusive data, covering the full phase-space, were taken at the three different beam momenta of p_beam=2.95, 3.20 and 3.30 GeV/c, corresponding to excess energies of epsilon=204, 285 and 316 MeV, respectively. Total cross-sections were deduced for the three beam momenta to be 23.9+/-0.8 +/-2.0 ub, 28.4+/-1.3 +/-2.2 ub and 35.0+/-1.3 +/-3.0 ub. Differential observables including Dalitz plots were obtained. The analysis of the Dalitz plots reveals a strong influence …
We study the mechanism of the associated Lambda-kaon and Sigma-kaon production in nucleon-nucleon collisions over an extended range of near threshold beam energies within an effective Lagrangian model, to understand of the new data on pp --> p Lambda K+ and pp --> p Sigma0 K+ reactions published recently by the COSY-11 collaboration. In this theory, the hyperon production proceeds via the excitation of N*(1650), N*(1710), and N*(1720) baryonic resonances. Interplay of the relative contributions of various resonances to the cross sections, is discussed as a function of the beam energy over a la…
The hypernuclear Auger effect, given by the de-excitation of a Lambda hypernucleus by means of the transition of a Lambda hyperon from an initial to a lower lying final single particle state in conjunction with neutron emission from the core nucleus is studied in relativistic DDRH field theory. Baryonic interactions are obtained from the Bonn NN potential by Dirac-Brueckner theory and theoretically derived scaling laws for the meson-hyperon vertices. The model is applied to the ^{209}_Lambda Pb hypernucleus. Lambda and nucleon bound states as well as scattering states are calculated self-consi…
Resonance parameters (pole masses and residues) associated with the excited states of hyperons, Lambda^* and Sigma^*, are extracted within a dynamical coupled-channels model developed recently by us [Phys. Rev. C 90, 065204 (2014)] through a comprehensive partial-wave analysis of the K^- p --> barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, K Xi data up to invariant mass W = 2.1 GeV. We confirm the existence of resonances corresponding to most, if not all, of the four-star resonances rated by the Particle Data Group. We also find several new resonances, and in particular propose a possible existence …
A high-statistic data sample of Ar(1.76 AGeV)+KCl events recorded with HADES is used to search for a hypertriton signal. An upper production limit per centrality-triggered event of $1.04$ x $10^{-3}$ on the $3σ$ level is derived. Comparing this value with the number of successfully reconstructed $Λ$ hyperons allows to determine an upper limit on the ratio $N_{_Λ^3H}/N_Λ$, which is confronted with statistical and coalescence-type model calculations.
We investigate the production of a cascade hyperon (Xi) through the K^- + p --> K^+ (K^0) + Xi^- (Xi^0) reactions, within an effective Lagrangian model where these reactions proceed via excitations of Lambda and Sigma resonance intermediate states in s- and u-channels. The coupling constants at the various vertices are taken from previous studies and SU(3) symmetry considerations. The calculated total cross sections of these reactions, which are in good agreement with the available data, are dominated by the contributions from the Lambda(1520) intermediate resonant state. However, the K^+ meso…
The double differential multiplicities and rapidity distributions for Lambda hyperon production in central Au+Au interactions at AGS in the range of rapidities from 1.7 to 3.2 and the range of transverse kinetic energies from 0.0 to 0.7 GeV are parametrized in terms of the the Blast Wave approximation. The longitudinal and transverse radial expansion parameters and the mean temperature of Lambda hyperons after the freeze-out of the nuclear matter are presented. The predictions of the RQMD model with and without mean field potentials are compared to our data. Both variants of RQMD are parameter…
The longitudinal or transverse spin transfer to Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions is expected to be sensitive to the helicity or transversity distributions of strange and anti-strange quarks of the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation function. We report the first measurement of the transverse spin transfer to $Λ$ and $\bar Λ$ along the polarization direction of the fragmenting quark, $D_{TT}$, in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of…
