Let $\X=A^\top R\U$ be a linearly transformed generalised symmetrised Dirichlet scale mixture in $\R^k$, $k\ge2$. For a fixed direction $\b\in(0,\infty)^k$, we derive an exact asymptotic expansion of $\pk{\X>\vk t_n}$ for eventually positive threshold vectors $\vk t_n$ described relative to the quadratic-programming minimiser on the natural active and residual Gumbel scales; residual limits equal to $-\infty$ are allowed. The radial distribution is assumed to belong to the Gumbel max-domain of attraction. The local power and constant are determined by the local product-power behaviour of the angular density near the minimising direction. The result includes the ray $\vk t_n=u_n\b$ and yields an explicit comparison with the associated elliptical model, a conditional weak limit for the locally rescaled vector and the limiting location of the smallest component under a high common threshold. The minimum overshoot is asymptotically exponential and independent of its location. The finite-dimensional Gaussian minimum and location limits are recovered as a special case.
We study theoretically, for the first time, the Dirichlet kernel estimator introduced by Aitchison and Lauder (1985) for the estimation of multivariate densities supported on the $d$-dimensional simplex. The simplex is an important case as it is the natural domain of compositional data and has been neglected in the literature on asymmetric kernels. The Dirichlet kernel estimator, which generalizes the (non-modified) unidimensional Beta kernel estimator from Chen (1999), is free of boundary bias and non-negative everywhere on the simplex. We show that it achieves the optimal convergence rate $O…
In this short note, we prove an asymptotic expansion for the ratio of the Dirichlet density to the multivariate normal density with the same mean and covariance matrix. The expansion is then used to derive an upper bound on the total variation between the corresponding probability measures and rederive the asymptotic variance of the Dirichlet kernel estimators introduced by Aitchison & Lauder (1985) and studied theoretically in Ouimet (2020). Another potential application related to the asymptotic equivalence between the Gaussian variance regression problem and the Gaussian white noise problem…
This paper considers the asymptotic behavior in $β$-Hölder spaces, and under $L^p$ losses, of a Dirichlet kernel density estimator proposed by Aitchison and Lauder (1985) for the analysis of compositional data. In recent work, Ouimet and Tolosana-Delgado (2022) established the uniform strong consistency and asymptotic normality of this estimator. As a complement, it is shown here that the Aitchison-Lauder estimator can achieve the minimax rate asymptotically for a suitable choice of bandwidth whenever $(p,β) \in [1, 3) \times (0, 2]$ or $(p, β) \in \mathcal{A}_d$, where $\mathcal{A}_d$ is a sp…
The studies of Ramírez, Hino-Ramírez, and Ariyoshi-Hino showed that an integrated version of Varadhan's asymptotics holds for Markovian semigroups associated with arbitrary strong local symmetric Dirichlet forms. In this paper, we consider non-symmetric bilinear forms that are the sum of strong local symmetric Dirichlet forms and lower-order perturbed terms. We give sufficient conditions for the associated semigroups to have asymptotics of the same type.
We study small perturbations of the Dirichlet problems for second order elliptic equations that degenerate on the boundary. The limit of the solution, as the perturbation tends to zero, is calculated. The result is based on a certain asymptotic self-similarity near the boundary, which holds in the generic case. In the last section, we briefly consider the stabilization of solutions to the corresponding parabolic equations with a small parameter. Metastability effects arise in this case: the asymptotics of the solution depends on the time scale. Initial-boundary value problem with the Neumann b…
We consider sub-Laplacians in open bounded sets in a homogeneous Carnot group and study their spectral properties. We prove that these operators have a pure point spectrum, and prove the existence of the spectral gap. In addition, we give applications to the small ball problem for a hypoelliptic Brownian motion and the large time behavior of the heat content in a regular domain.
We study measures on random partitions, arising from condensing stochastic particle systems with stationary product distributions. We provide fairly general conditions on the stationary weights, which lead to Poisson-Dirichlet statistics of the condensed phase in the thermodynamic limit. The Poisson-Dirichlet distribution is known to be the unique reversible measure of split-merge dynamics for random partitions, which we use to characterize the limit law. We also establish concentration results for the macroscopic phase, using size-biased sampling techniques and the equivalence of ensembles to…
We derive the sharp non-asymptotical uniform estimations for tails of distributions for classical normed sums of centered normed independent random vectors having a moderate decreasing individual tails of summands.
We study tail behaviour of the distribution of the area under the positive excursion of a random walk which has negative drift and heavy-tailed increments. We determine the asymptotics for tail probabilities for the area.
