The computation of radiative energy loss in a finite size QCD medium with dynamical constituents is a key ingredient for obtaining reliable predictions for jet quenching in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We here present a theoretical formalism for the calculation of the first order in opacity radiative energy loss of a quark jet traveling through a finite size dynamical QCD medium. We show that, while each individual contribution to the energy loss is infrared divergent, the divergence is naturally regulated once all diagrams are taken into account. Finite size effects are shown to induce a non-linear path length dependence of the energy loss, recovering both the incoherent Gunion-Bertsch limit, as well as destructive Landau-Pomeanchuk-Migdal limit. Finally, our results suggest a remarkably simple general mapping between energy loss expressions for static and dynamical QCD media.
We extend the calculation of radiative corrections to momentum broadening in a QCD medium to include processes where single scattering dominates over multiple soft scatterings. Our analysis focusses on processes that are enhanced by a potentially large double logarithmic contribution. We demonstrate that such double logarithmic contributions emerge in calculations of momentum broadening in dilute systems where only single scattering occurs. We show how the different regimes, multiple versus single scattering, constrain different parts of the phase space.
Radiative jet energy loss in a three-dimensional hydrodynamical medium and high $p_T$ azimuthal asymmetry of $π_0$ suppression at mid and forward rapidity at RHIC
We investigate the energy loss and equilibration of highly energetic particles/jets inside a QCD medium. Based on an effective kinetic description of QCD, including $2\leftrightarrow 2$ elastic processes, radiative $1\leftrightarrow 2$ processes, as well as the back-reaction of jet constituents onto the thermal medium, we describe the in-medium evolution of jets from the energy scale of the jet $\sim E$ all the way to the medium scale $\sim T $. While elastic processes and back-reaction are important to describe the equilibration of soft fragments of the jet, we find that the energy loss is do…
A U.S.-based Electron-Ion Collider will provide the ultimate capability to determine both the structure and properties of nucleons and nuclei, as well as how matter and energy can be transported through a strongly interacting quantum mechanical environment. The production and propagation of long-lived heavy subatomic particles is a unique and critical part of this planned decade-long research program. In these proceedings we report the derivation of all branching processes in nuclei that lead to a modification of semi-inclusive hadron production, jet cross sections, and jet substructure when c…

The transverse momentum broadening coefficient $\hat{q}$ receives both soft, classical and radiative, quantum corrections. The former are responsible for a large O(g) correction, whereas the latter enter at relative order $α_s$, but are enhanced by a double logarithm of the length of the medium over the thermal wavelength. We analyze radiative corrections for a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. We find that a thermal population of dynamical gluons changes the boundaries and reduces the size of the double-logarithmic phase space. It also provides new subdominant logarithmic corrections. We als…
Vacuum and medium modified fragmentation functions are used to study the properties of hadrons produced in hard interactions, in $p$-$p$ and $A$-$A$ collisions, respectively. We study the modification of reconstructed jets and high transverse momentum (high-$p_\mathrm{T}$) hadrons as they propagate through a dense medium. Jets and jet modification are studied within the framework of a factorized jet function. The vacuum jet function is found consistent with PYTHIA simulations. Both the modification of the fragmentation function and the jet function are carried out within the identical higher-t…
We report on a benchmark calculation of the in-medium radiative energy loss of low-virtuality jet partons within the EPOS3-Jet framework. The radiative energy loss is based on an extension of the Gunion-Bertsch matrix element for a massive projectile and a massive radiated gluon. On top of that, the coherence (LPM effect) is implemented by assigning a formation phase to the trial radiated gluons in a fashion similar to the approach in JHEP 07 (2011), 118, by Zapp, Stachel and Wiedemann. In a calculation with a simplified radiation kernel, we reproduce the radiation spectrum reported in the app…
