We present a new method for detecting the missing baryons by generating a template for the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. The template is computed from the product of a reconstructed velocity field with a galaxy field; we find that the combination of a galaxy redshift survey such as SDSS and a CMB survey such as ACT and PLANCK can detect the kSZ, and thus the ionized gas, at significant signal-to-noise. Unlike other techniques that look for hot gas or metals, this approach directly detects the electrons in the IGM through their signature on the CMB. The estimated signal-to-noise for detecting the galaxy-momentum kSZ cross-correlation is 4, 9, and 12 for ACT (with survey area of 2000 $\mathrm{deg}^2$) with SDSS-DR4, SDSS3 and ADEPT respectively. The estimated signal-to-noise for PLANCK with SDSS-DR4, SDSS3 and ADEPT is 11, 23, and 32.
Our method provides a new mean for determining properties of the ionized gas in the Universe. We provide galaxy momentum templates constructed from Sloan Digital Sky Survey online at our website at http://www.astro.princeton.edu/~shirley/SZ/SZ.html. The predicted correlation coefficients are provided along with the momentum maps. One can download the momentum templates and cross-correlate directly with CMB maps from ACT and PLANCK to detect the missing baryons.
This Science White Paper, prepared in response to the ESA Voyage 2050 call for long-term mission planning, aims to describe the various science possibilities that can be realized with an L-class space observatory that is dedicated to the study of the interactions of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons with the cosmic web. Our aim is specifically to use the CMB as a backlight -- and survey the gas, total mass, and stellar content of the entire observable Universe by means of analyzing the spatial and spectral distortions imprinted on it. These distortions result from two major processes t…
This work introduces an unbiased minimum variance painting of the pixel domain CMB maps for both the missing and available sky regions. In the missing region, it generates CMB realizations that have identical statistical properties to the expected CMB signal; and in the available region, it significantly alleviate the unwanted residuals, e.g., the residual of EB-leakage. The time cost of this method follows $\sim$$ O(N_{side}^3)$ ($N_{side}$ is the map resolution parameter), which is similar to the fast spherical harmonic transforms and is much better than the traditional minimum variance meth…
Achieving a precise understanding of galaxy formation in a cosmological context is one of the great challenges in theoretical astrophysics, due to the vast range of spatial scales involved in the relevant physical processes. Observations in the millimeter bands, particularly those using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation as a "backlight", provide a unique probe of the thermodynamics of these processes, with the capability to directly measure the density, pressure, and temperature of ionized gas. Moreover, these observations have uniquely high sensitivity into the outskirts of the …

Context. The existence of a maximum correlation angle ($θ_{max} \gtrsim 60^{\circ}$) in the two-point angular temperature correlations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, measured by WMAP and Planck, stands in sharp contrast to the prediction of standard inflationary cosmology, in which the correlations should extend across the full sky (i.e., $180^{\circ}$). The introduction of a hard lower cutoff ($k_{min}$) in the primordial power spectrum, however, leads naturally to the existence of $θ_{max}$. Among other cosmological anomalies detected in these data, an apparent dominance of …
Context. A significant fraction of the predicted baryons remains undetected in the local universe. We adopted the common assumption that a large fraction of the missing baryons corresponds to the hot (log T(K) = 5.5-7) phase of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). We base our missing baryons search on the scenario whereby the WHIM has been heated up via accretion shocks and galactic outflows, and is concentrated towards the filaments of the Cosmic Web. Aims. Our aim is to improve the observational search of the poorly detected hot WHIM. Methods. We detect the filamentary structure within …
The kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect -- the Doppler boosting of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons scattering off free electrons with non-zero line-of-sight velocity -- is an excellent probe of the distribution of baryons in the Universe. In this paper, we measure the kSZ effect due to ionized gas traced by infrared-selected galaxies from the \emph{unWISE} catalog. We employ the "projected-field" kSZ estimator, which does not require spectroscopic galaxy redshifts. To suppress non-kSZ foreground signals associated with the galaxies (e.g., dust emission and thermal SZ), this est…
We propose a novel technique to separate the late-time, post-reionization component of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect from the contribution to it from a (poorly understood and probably patchy) reionization history. The kSZ effect is one of the most promising probe of the {\em missing baryons} in the Universe. We study the possibility of reconstructing it in three dimensions (3D), using future spectroscopic surveys such as the Euclid survey. By reconstructing a 3D template from galaxy density and peculiar velocity fields from spectroscopic surveys we cross-correlate the estimator ag…
Almost a third of the cosmic baryons are "missing" at low redshifts, as they reside in the invisible warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). The thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect, which measures the line-of-sight integral of the plasma pressure, can potentially detect this WHIM, although its expected signal is hidden below the noise. Extragalactic dispersion measures (DMs)---obtained through observations of fast radio bursts (FRBs)---are excellent tracers of the WHIM, as they measure the column density of plasma, regardless of its temperature. Here we propose cross correlating DMs and tSZ m…
We present the detection of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (kSZE) signals from groups of galaxies as a function of halo mass down to $\log (M_{500}/{\rm M_\odot}) \sim 12.3$, using the {\it Planck} CMB maps and stacking about $40,000$ galaxy systems with known positions, halo masses, and peculiar velocities. The signals from groups of different mass are constrained simultaneously to take care of projection effects of nearby halos. The total kSZE flux within halos estimated implies that the gas fraction in halos is about the universal baryon fraction, even in low-mass halos, indicating t…
Galaxy redshift surveys, such as 2dF, SDSS, 6df, GAMA and VIPERS, have shown that the spatial distribution of matter forms a rich web, known as the cosmic web. The majority of galaxy survey analyses measure the amplitude of galaxy clustering as a function of scale, ignoring information beyond a small number of summary statistics. Since the matter density field becomes highly non-Gaussian as structure evolves under gravity, we expect other statistical descriptions of the field to provide us with additional information. One way to study the non-Gaussianity is to study filaments, which evolve non…
