In this paper we study the homology and cohomology of confguration spaces of two distinct particles on a graph. Our main tool is intersection theory for cycles in graphs. We obtain an explicit description of the cohomology algebra of the configuration space in the case of planar graphs.
This paper continues the investigation of the configuration space of two distinct points on a graph. We analyze the process of adding an additional edge to the graph and the resulting changes in the topology of the configuration space. We introduce a linking bilinear form on the homology group of the graph with values in the cokernel of the intersection form (introduced in Part I of this work). For a large class of graphs, which we call mature graphs, we give explicit expressions for the homology groups of the configuration space. We show that under a simple condition, adding an edge to a matu…
These expository notes are dedicated to the study of the topology of configuration spaces of manifolds. We give detailed computations of many invariants, including the fundamental group of the configuration spaces of $\mathbb{R}^2$, the integral cohomology of the ordered---and the mod $p$ cohomology of the unordered---configuration spaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and the rational cohomology of the unordered configuration spaces of an arbitrary manifold of odd dimension. We also discuss models for mapping spaces in terms of labeled configuration spaces, and we show that these models split stably. Som…
We study the Fadell-Husseini index of the configuration space F(R^d,n) with respect to different subgroups of the symmetric group S_n. For p prime and d>0, we completely determine Index_{Z/p}(F(R^d,p);F_p) and partially describe Index{(Z/p)^k}(F(R^d,p^k);F_p). In this process we obtain results of independent interest, including: (1) an extended equivariant Goresky-MacPherson formula, (2) a complete description of the top homology of the partition lattice Pi_p as an F_p[Z_p]-module, and (3) a generalized Dold theorem for elementary abelian groups. The results on the Fadell-Husseini index yield …

We explore the topology of configuration spaces of hard disks experimentally, and show that several changes in the topology can already be observed with a small number of particles. The results illustrate a theorem of Baryshnikov, Bubenik, and Kahle that critical points correspond to configurations of disks with balanced mechanical stresses, and suggest conjectures about the asymptotic topology as the number of disks tends to infinity.
We survey and expand on the work of Segal, Milgram and the author on the topology of spaces of maps of positive genus curves into $n$-th complex projective space, $n\geq 1$ (in both the holomorphic and continuous categories). Both based and unbased maps are studied and in particular we compute the fundamental groups of the spaces in question. The relevant case when $n=1$ is given by a non-trivial extension which we fully determine.
For a topological space $X$ we study continuous maps $f : X\to \mathbb R^m$ such that images of every pairwise distinct $k$ points are affinely (linearly) independent. Such maps are called affinely (linearly) $k$-regular embeddings. We investigate the cohomology obstructions to existence of regular embeddings and give some new lower bounds on the dimension $m$ as function of $X$ and $k$, for the cases $X$ is $\mathbb R^n$ or $X$ is an $n$-dimensional manifold. In the latter case, some nonzero Stiefel--Whitney classes of $X$ help to improve the bound.
We give lowed bounds on the number of periodic trajectories in strictly convex smooth billiards in $\R^{m+1}$ for $m\ge 3$. For plane billiards (when m=1) such bounds were obtained by G. Birkhoff in the 1920's. Our proof is based on topological methods of calculus of variations - equivariant Morse and Lusternik - Schirelman theories. We compute the equivariant cohomology ring of the cyclic configuration space of the sphere $S^m$, i.e., the space of n-tuples of points $(x_1, ..., x_n)$, where $x_i\in S^m$ and $x_i\ne x_{i+1}$ for i=1,2, ..., n.
Given a closed manifold $M$. We give an algebraic model for the Chas-Sullivan product and the Goresky-Hingston coproduct. In the simply-connected case, this admits a particularly nice description in terms of a Poincaré duality model of the manifold, and involves the configuration space of two points on $M$. We moreover, construct an $IBL_\infty$-structure on (a model of) cyclic chains on the cochain algebra of $M$, such that the natural comparison map to the $S^1$-equivariant loop space homology intertwines the Lie bialgebra structure on homology. The construction of the coproduct/cobracket de…
In this thesis we develop a full characterization of abelian quantum statistics on graphs. We explain how the number of anyon phases is related to connectivity. For 2-connected graphs the independence of quantum statistics with respect to the number of particles is proven. For non-planar 3-connected graphs we identify bosons and fermions as the only possible statistics, whereas for planar 3-connected graphs we show that one anyon phase exists. Our approach also yields an alternative proof of the structure theorem for the first homology group of n-particle graph configuration spaces. Finally, w…
We propose a new method of computing cohomology groups of spaces of knots in $\R^n$, $n \ge 3$, based on the topology of configuration spaces and two-connected graphs, and calculate all such classes of order $\le 3.$ As a byproduct we define the higher indices, which invariants of knots in $\R^3$ define at arbitrary singular knots. More generally, for any finite-order cohomology class of the space of knots we define its principal symbol, which lies in a cohomology group of a certain finite-dimensional configuration space and characterizes our class modulo the classes of smaller filtration.
We examine complements (inside products of a smooth projective complex curve of arbitrary genus) of unions of diagonals indexed by the edges of an arbitrary simple graph. We use Gysin models associated to these quasi-projective manifolds to compute pairs of analytic germs at the origin, both for rank 1 and 2 representation varieties of their fundamental groups, and for degree 1 topological Green--Lazarsfeld loci. As a corollary, we describe all regular surjections with connected generic fiber, defined on the above complements onto smooth complex curves of negative Euler characteristic. We show…
In this article, we investigate the orbit configuration spaces of some equivariant closed manifolds over simple convex polytopes in toric topology, such as small covers, quasi-toric manifolds and (real) moment-angle manifolds; especially for the cases of small covers and quasi-toric manifolds. These kinds of orbit configuration spaces are all non-free and noncompact, but still built via simple convex polytopes. We obtain an explicit formula of Euler characteristic for orbit configuration spaces of small covers and quasi-toric manifolds in terms of the $h$-vector of a simple convex polytope. As…
A central question in the study of line arrangements in the complex projective plane $\mathbb{CP}^2$ is: when does the combinatorial data of the arrangement determine its topological properties? In the present work, we introduce a topological invariant of complexified real line arrangements, the chamber weight. This invariant is based on the weight counting over the points of the arrangement dual configuration, located in particular chambers of the real projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$, dealing only with geometrical properties. Using this dual point of view, we construct several examples of co…
Recent work suggests that topological features of certain quantum gravity theories can be interpreted as particles, matching the known fermions and bosons of the first generation in the Standard Model. This is achieved by identifying topological structures with elements of the framed Artin braid group on three strands, and demonstrating a correspondence between the invariants used to characterise these braids (a braid is a set of non-intersecting curves, that connect one set of $N$ points with another set of $N$ points), and quantities like electric charge, colour charge, and so on. In this pa…
Configuration spaces form a rich class of topological objects which are not usually presented to an undergraduate audience. Our aim is to present configuration spaces in a manner accessible to the advanced undergraduate. We begin with a slight introduction to the topic before giving necessary background on algebraic topology. We then discuss configuration spaces of the Euclidean plane and the braid groups they give rise to. Lastly, we discuss configuration spaces of graphs and the various techniques which have been developed to pursue their study.
Exciton Scattering (ES) theory attributes excited electronic states to standing waves in quasi-one-dimensional molecular materials by assuming a quasi-particle picture of optical excitations. The quasi-particle properties at branching centers are described by the corresponding scattering matrices. Here we identify the topological invariant of scattering center, referred to as its winding number, and apply topological intersection theory to count the number of quantum states in a quasi-one-dimensional system.
