We deform the N=6 Chern Simons theory by adding extra matter hypermultiplets in a fundamental representation of one or both gauge groups. We compute the quantum corrected moduli space. We verify that the holographic dual of the modified theory consists of the usual AdS4 x CP3 background in presence of AdS4 filling D6 branes which wrap RP3 in CP3. We extend the correspondence to a similar modification of more general known N=3 dual pairs
We show that the branes of ten-dimensional IIA/IIB string theory must satisfy, upon toroidal compactification, specific wrapping rules in order to reproduce the number of supersymmetric branes that follows from a supergravity analysis. The realization of these wrapping rules suggests that IIA/IIB string theory contains a whole class of generalized Kaluza-Klein monopoles.
In this paper we give a microscopical description of certain configurations of branes wrapping black hole horizons in terms of dielectric gravitational waves. Interestingly, the configurations are stable only due to the gravitational background. Therefore, this constitutes a nice example of purely gravitational dielectric effect.
Using a recently constructed M5-brane world-volume action, we demonstrate that wrapping the M5-brane on K3 gives the heterotic string in seven dimensions. To facilitate the comparison, a new version of the world-sheet action for the Narain-compactified heterotic string, with manifest T duality invariance, is formulated.
We construct supergravity duals of D6-branes wrapping Kahler four-cycles inside a Calabi-Yau threefold, CY_3. We obtain the purely gravitational M-theory description, which turns out to be a Calabi-Yau fourfold, CY_4. We also analyze the dynamics of a probe D6 in this background.
Branes may be approximated semi-classically by solutions of supergravity theories with event and Cauchy horizons. I suggest that if one wishes to avoid singularities and to capture accurately some of the properties of branes then these classical spacetimes must be identified so as to render them periodic in time.
In this paper we first derive solutions which can be interpreted as branes wrapping nontrivial curved manifolds, and then study their cosmological implications. We find that at early times the branes tend to shrink the internal manifold, while allowing the ``unwrapped'' dimensions to expand in congruence with what has already been observed in the case when the internal manifold is flat (tori). However, at late times the internal curvature terms become important leading to potentially interesting differences.
We characterize the geometry produced by M5-branes wrapping a Special Lagrangian 3-cycle in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The presence of the brane replaces the the Calabi-Yau by a real manifold with an almost complex structure. We show that, in this classification, a distinguished (1,1) form as well as a globally defined (3,0) form play an important role. The requirements of supersymmetry preservation impose constraints on these structures which can be used to classify the background.
In this paper we show that the number of all 1/2-BPS branes in string theory compactified on a torus can be derived by universal wrapping rules whose formulation we present. These rules even apply to branes in less than ten dimensions whose ten-dimensional origin is an exotic brane. In that case the wrapping rules contain an additional combinatorial factor that is related to the highest dimension in which the ten-dimensional exotic brane, after compactification, can be realized as a standard brane. We show that the wrapping rules also apply to cases with less supersymmetry. As a specific examp…
We show how the brane wrapping rules, recently discovered in closed oriented string theories compactified on tori, are extended to the case of the Type IIA string compactified on K3. To this aim, a crucial role is played by the duality between this theory and the Heterotic string compactified on a four-dimensional torus T^4. We first show how the wrapping rules are applied to the T^4/Z_N orbifold limits of K3 by relating the D0 branes, obtained as D2 branes wrapping two-cycles, to the perturbative BPS states of the Heterotic theory on T^4. The wrapping rules are then extended to the solitonic …
We examine the dynamics of extended branes, carrying lower dimensional brane charges, wrapping black holes and black hole microstates in M and Type II string theory. We show that they have a universal dispersion relation typical of threshold bound states with a total energy equal to the sum of the contributions from the charges. In near-horizon geometries of black holes, these are BPS states, and the dispersion relation follows from supersymmetry as well as properties of the conformal algebra. However they break all supersymmetries of the full asymptotic geometries of black holes and microstat…
We investigate finite-$N$ corrections to the superconformal indices of the theories realized on M2- and M5-branes. For three-dimensional theories realized on a stack of $N$ M2-branes we calculate the finite-$N$ corrections as the contribution of extended M5-branes in the dual geometry $AdS_4\times \boldsymbol{S}^7$. We take only M5-brane configurations with a single wrapping into account, and neglect multiple-wrapping configurations. We compare the results with the indices calculated from the ABJM theory, and find agreement up to expected errors due to the multiple wrapping. For six-dimensiona…
We show that the same wrapping rules that have been derived for the branes of IIA and IIB string theory also apply to the branes of the toroidally compactified heterotic string theory. Moreover, we show that applying these wrapping rules to the IIA theory compactified over K3 is consistent with the well-known duality between the heterotic string theory compactified over T^4 and the IIA string theory compactified over K3. We derive a simple rule that relates, in any dimension, the T-duality representation of the branes of the toroidally compactified heterotic theory to the relevant R-symmetry r…
We probe doubled geometry with dual fundamental branes, i.e. solitons. Restricting ourselves first to solitonic branes with more than two transverse directions we find that the doubled geometry requires an effective wrapping rule for the solitonic branes which is dual to the wrapping rule for fundamental branes. This dual wrapping rule can be understood by the presence of Kaluza-Klein monopoles. Extending our analysis to supersymmetric solitonic branes with less than or equal to two transverse directions we show that such solitons are precisely obtained by applying the same dual wrapping rule …
We study the central charges of the supersymmetry algebra of branes in backgrounds corresponding to wrapped M5-branes. In the case of M5-branes wrapping a holomorphic 2-cycle in two complex-dimensional space, we find this allows for a supersymmetric M5-brane probe which is related to the M2-brane probe which describes the BPS spectra of the corresponding N=2 worldvolume gauge theory. For the case of M5-branes wrapping a holomorphic 2-cycle in three complex-dimensional space, we find that the central charges allow for a supersymmetric M5-brane probe wrapping a Cayley calibrated 4-cycle, which h…
We apply some methods of homology and K-theory to special classes of branes wrapping homologically nontrivial cycles. We treat the classification of four-geometries in terms of compact stabilizers (by analogy with Thurston's classification of three-geometries) and derive the K-amenability of Lie groups associated with locally symmetric spaces listed in this case. More complicated examples of T-duality and topology change from fluxes are also considered. We analyse D-branes and fluxes in type II string theory on ${\mathbb C}P^3\times Σ_g \times {\mathbb T}^2$ with torsion $H-$flux and demonstra…
We consider an open string stretched between a Y=0 brane and a Y_theta=0 brane. The latter brane is rotated with respect to the former by an angle theta, and is described by a non-diagonal boundary S-matrix. This system interpolates smoothly between the Y-Y (theta =0) and the Y-bar Y (theta = pi/2) systems, which are described by diagonal boundary S-matrices. We use integrability to compute the energies of one-particle states at weak coupling up to leading wrapping order (4, 6 loops) as a function of the angle. The results for the diagonal cases exactly match with those obtained previously.
We study the addition of N_f flavor D5-branes to supergravity solutions describing D5-branes wrapping two-cycles of genus g>1 inside a six-dimensional space equipped with an SU(3)-structure. The non-zero genus g on the gravity side is dual to the existence of massless adjoint chiral superfields. Three types of internal manifolds are considered, each involving one of the following fibered products: H_2 x SL_2, S^2 x SL_2 or H_2 x S^3, where SL_2 stands for the universal cover of SL(2,R). For the first one, we investigate the dual field theories. We show that some of the solutions with N_f non-z…
We construct dual supergravity descriptions of D3-branes wrapping associative 3-cycles $L$. We analyse the conditions for having five-dimensional background solutions of the form $AdS_2 \times L$ and show that they require $L$ to be of constant negative curvature type. This provides $AdS_2$ background solutions when $L$ is the hyperbolic space $H^3$ or its quotients by subgroups of its isometry group. We construct a regular numerical solution interpolating between $AdS_5$ in the UV and $AdS_2 \times H^3$ in the IR. The IR fixed point exists at the ``intersection'' of the Coulomb and Higgs bran…
We present a procedure to evaluate the action for dielectric branes in non-trivial backgrounds. These backgrounds must be capable to be taken into a Kaluza-Klein form, with some non-zero wrapping factor. We derive the way this wrapping factor is gauged away. Examples of this are AdS_5xS^5 and AdS_3xS^3xT^4, where we perform the construction of different stable systems, which stability relies in its dielectric character.
With use of a 6-form field strength of ten-dimensional type IIA supergravity over AdS_4 x CP^3, when S^7/Z_k is considered as a S^1 Hopf fibration on CP^3, we earn a fully localized solution in the bulk of Euclideanized AdS_4. Indeed, this object appears in the external space because of wrapping a D4(M5)-brane over some parts of the respective internal spaces. Interestingly, this supersymmetry breaking SU(4)x U(1)-singlet mode exists in already known spectra when one uses the 8_c gravitino representation of SO(8). To adjust the boundary theory, we should swap the original 8_s and 8_c represent…
We consider an abelian T-duality on a deformation of the gravitational solution of \cite{Maldacena2001}, which is the gravity dual of $N_c$ D5-branes wrapping a three-cycle inside a manifold that admits a $G_2$ structure. Performing the T-duality we find $N_c$ D$4$-branes wrapping a two-cycle with non-trivial antisymmetric fields in the NS-NS and RR sector. We study some aspects of its dual field theory and we compare with the original solution.
We consider the supergravity back-reaction of M2 branes wrapping around the space-time cycles in 1/8-BPS microstate geometries. We show that such brane wrappings will generically break all the supersymmetries. In particular, all the supersymmetries will be broken if there are such wrapped branes but the net charge of the wrapped branes is zero. We show that if M2 branes wrap a single cycle, or if they wrap a several of co-linear cycles with the same orientation, then the solution will be 1/16-BPS, having two supersymmetries. We comment on how these results relate to using W-branes to understan…
Duality symmetries in M--theory and string theory are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the way in which string winding modes and brane wrapping modes can lead to new spatial dimensions. Brane world-volumes wrapping around Lorentzian tori can give rise to extra time dimensions and in this way dualities can change the number of time dimensions as well as the number of space dimensions. This suggests that brane wrapping modes and spacetime momenta should be on an equal footing and M--theory should not be formulated in a spacetime of definite dimension or signature.
We show that, in the context of dilaton gravity, a recently proposed democratic principle for intersection possibilities of branes winding around extra dimensions yield stabilization, even with the inclusion of momentum modes of the wrapped branes on top of the winding modes. The constraints for stabilization massaged by string theory inputs forces the number of observed dimensions to be three. We also discuss consequences of adding ordinary matter living in the observed dimensions.
Consider the degeneracies of BPS bound states of one D6 brane wrapping Calabi-Yau X with D0 branes and D2 branes. When we include D4-branes wrapping Lagrangian cycle L in addition, D2-branes can end on them. These give rise to new bound states in the d=2, N=(2,2) theory of the D4 branes. We call these "open" BPS states, in contrast to closed BPS states that arise from D-branes without boundaries. Lifting this to M-theory, we show that the generating function is captured by free Fock space spanned by M2-brane particles ending on M5 branes wrapping L. This implies that the open BPS bound states …
Sometimes a homology cycle of a nonsingular compactification manifold cannot be represented by a nonsingular submanifold. We want to know whether such nonrepresentable cycles can be wrapped by D-branes. A brane wrapping a representable cycle carries a K-theory charge if and only if its Freed-Witten anomaly vanishes. However some K-theory charges are only carried by branes that wrap nonrepresentable cycles. We provide two examples of Freed-Witten anomaly-free D6-branes wrapping nonrepresentable cycles in the presence of a trivial NS 3-form flux. The first occurs in type IIA string theory compac…
We introduce a technique to realise brane wrapping and double dimensional reduction in the context of AKSZ topological sigma models and also in their target spaces, which are symplectic $L_n$-algebroids (i.e. QP-manifolds). Our procedure involves a novel coisotropic reduction combined with an AKSZ transgression that realises degree-shifting; the reduced QP-manifold depends on topological data of the `wrapped' cycle. We check our procedure against the known rules for fluxes under wrapping in the context of M-theory/type IIA duality, and we also find a new relation between Courant algebroids and…
Problems of stabilizing moduli of the type--IIB string theory on toroidal orientifolds $\T^6/\Z_2$, in presence of worldvolume fluxes on various D-branes, are considered. For $Z_2$ actions, introducing either O9 or O3 planes, we rule out the possibility of moduli stabilization in a wide class of models with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry, characterized by the type of fluxes turned on along D-brane worldvolume. Our results, in particular, imply that Abelian worldvolume fluxes can not by themselves stabilize closed string moduli, in a consistent supersymmtric model, for above orientifold compacti…
We construct various examples of 1/4-BPS giant gravitons embedded into the type IIB supergravity background $AdS_{3} \times S^{3}_{+} \times S^{3}_{-} \times S^{1}$ with pure R-R flux: two D1-brane giants wrapping 1-cycles in $AdS_{3}$ and $S^{3}_{+} \times S^{3}_{-}$, and one D5-brane giant wrapping a 4-cycle in $S^{3}_{+} \times S^{3}_{-}$ and the $S^{1}$. These D-branes are supported by angular momenta $α$ P on one 3-sphere and $(1-α)$ P on the other. We then construct a general class of 1/8-BPS D5-brane giant gravitons wrapping 4-cycles $Σ$ in $S^{3}_{+} \times S^{3}_{-}$ and the $S^{1}$. …
We investigate possible existence of duality symmetries which exchange the Kaluza-Klein modes with the wrapping modes of a BPS saturated $p$-brane on a torus. Assuming the validity of the conjectured $U$-duality symmetries of type II and heterotic string theories and $M$-theory, we show that for a BPS saturated $p$-brane there is an SL(2,Z) symmetry that mixes the Kaluza-Klein modes on a $(p+1)$ dimensional torus $T^{(p+1)}$ with the wrapping modes of the $p$-brane on $T^{(p+1)}$. The field that transforms as a modular parameter under this SL(2,Z) transformation has as its real part the compon…
We study supergravity solutions of type II branes wrapping a Melvin universe. These solutions provide the gravity description of non-commutative field theories with non-constant non-commutative parameter. Typically these theories are non-supersymmetric, though they exhibit some feature of their corresponding supersymmetric theories. An interesting feature of these non-commutative theories is that there is a critical length in the theory in which for distances larger than this length the effects of non-commutativity become important and for smaller distances these effects are negligible. Theref…
We study the geometry of M5-branes wrapping a 2-cycle which is Special Lagrangian with respect to a specific complex structure in a Calabi-Yau two-fold. Using methods recently applied to the three-fold case, we are again able find a characterization of the geometry, in terms of a non-integrable almost complex structure and a (2,0) form. This time, however, due to the hyper-K{ä}hler nature of the underlying 2-fold we also have the freedom of choosing a different almost complex structure with respect to which the wrapped 2-cycle is holomorphic. We show that this latter almost complex structure i…
Using wall-crossing formulae and the theory of mock modular forms we derive a holomorphic anomaly equation for the modified elliptic genus of two M5-branes wrapping a rigid divisor inside a Calabi-Yau manifold. The anomaly originates from restoring modularity of an indefinite theta-function capturing the wall-crossing of BPS invariants associated to D4-D2-D0 brane systems. We show the compatibility of this equation with anomaly equations previously observed in the context of N=4 topological Yang-Mills theory on P^2 and E-strings obtained from wrapping M5-branes on a del Pezzo surface. The non-…
We study the membrane wrapping mode corrections to the Kaluza-Klein (KK) 6-brane in eleven dimensions. We examine the localized KK6-brane in the extended space in $E_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory. In order to discuss the physical origin of the localization in the extended space, we consider a probe M2-brane in eleven dimensions. We show that a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 4$ gauge theory is naturally interpreted as a membrane generalization of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the fundamental string. We point out that the vector field in the $\mathc…
From the worldsheet perspective, the superpotential on a D-brane wrapping internal cycles of a Calabi-Yau manifold is given as a generating functional for disk correlation functions. On the other hand, from the geometric point of view, D-brane superpotentials are captured by certain chain integrals. In this work, we explicitly show for branes wrapping internal 2-cycles how these two different approaches are related. More specifically, from the worldsheet point of view, D-branes at the Landau-Ginzburg point have a convenient description in terms of matrix factorizations. We use a formula derive…
We examine D-branes on $AdS_3$, and find a three-brane wrapping the entire $AdS_3$, in addition to 1-branes and instantonic 2-branes previously discussed in the literature. The three-brane is found using a construction of Maldacena, Moore, and Seiberg. We show that all these branes satisfy Cardy's condition and extract the open string spectrum on them.
We review some aspects of the gravity duals of supersymmetric gauge theories, arising in the world-volume of D-branes wrapping supersymmetric cycles of special holonomy manifolds, within the framework of lower dimensional gauged supergravity.
We investigate a near-horizon geometry of NS5-branes wrapping on a Riemann surface, which asymptotically approaches to linear dilaton backgrounds. We concretely find a fully localized solution of the near-horizon geometry of intersecting NS5-branes. We also discuss a relation to a description of Landau-Ginzburg theories.
We calculate the interaction potential between D5 and anti-D5 branes wrapping distant but homologous 2-cycles. The interaction potential is logarithmic in the separation radius and does not decouple at infinity. We show that logarithmic backreaction is generic for 5-branes wrapping distant but homologous 2-cycles, and we argue that this destabilises models of axion monodromy inflation involving NS5 brane-antibrane pairs in separate warped throats towards an uncontrolled region.
In this article we extend the construction of giant gravitons from holomorphic surfaces [arXiv:hep-th/0010206] to the ABJM correspondence. We construct a new class of 1/6-BPS M5-branes wrapping 5-manifolds in S^7/Z_k and supported by a large angular momentum in the orbifold space. These orbifold giant gravitons undergo a supersymmetry enhancement to 1/3-BPS and 1/2-BPS configurations in special cases. The compactification of M-theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k to type IIA superstring theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 then gives rise to another new class of 1/6-BPS D4 and NS5-branes wrapping 4 and 5-manifolds in …
We consider, in flux compactification of heterotic string theory, spacetime-filling five-branes. Stabilizing the fivebrane involves minimizing the combined energy density of the tension and a Coulomb potential associated with an internal 2-dimensional wrapping. After reviewing the generalized calibration under such circumstances, we consider a particular internal manifold based on a $T^2$ bundle over a conformally rescaled $K3$. Here, we find two distinct types of wrapping. In one class, the fivebrane wraps the fibre $T^2$ which belongs to a cyclic homotopy group. The winding number is not ext…
We perform a systematic study, in eleven dimensional supergravity, of the geometry of wrapped brane configurations admitting $AdS_2$ limits. Membranes wrapping holomorphic curves in Calabi-Yau manifolds are found to exhibit some novel features; in particular, for fourfolds or threefolds, the gravitational effect of the branes on the overall transverse space is only weakly restricted by the kinematics of the Killing spinor equation. We also study the $AdS_2$ limits of the wrapped brane supergravity descriptions. For membranes wrapped in a two-fold, we derive a set of $AdS_2$ supersymmetry condi…
We study the dimensional reduction of M5-branes wrapping special Lagrangian 3-cycles of a Calabi-Yau manifold and show explicitly that they result in 2-branes coupled to the hypermultiplets of ungauged N=2 D=5 supergravity theory. In addition to confirming previously known results, the calculation proves the relationship between them and provides further insight on how the topological properties of the compact space affect the lower dimensional fields.
We propose a prescription to calculate the superconformal index of the ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with finite $N$ on the AdS side. The finite $N$ corrections are included as contributions of D3-branes wrapped around three-cycles in $\boldsymbol{S}^5$, which are calculated as the index of the gauge theories realized on the wrapped branes. The single-wrapping contribution has been studied in a previous work, and we further confirm that the inclusion of multiple-wrapping contributions correctly reproduces the higher order terms as far as we have checked numerically.
We study the chiral ring of four-dimensional superconformal field theories obtained by wrapping M5-branes on a complex curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. We propose a field theoretic construction of all the theories found by Bah, Beem, Bobev and Wecht by introducing new building blocks, and prove several $\mathcal{N} = 1$ dualities featuring the latter. We match the central charges with those computed from the M5-brane anomaly polynomial, perform the counting of relevant operators and analyze unitarity bound violations. As a byproduct, we compute the exact dimension of "heavy operators" obt…
We attempt to generalize the effective action for the D-brane-anti-D-brane system obtained from boundary superstring field theory (BSFT) by adding an extra D-brane to it to obtain a covariantized action for 2 D-branes and 1 anti-D-brane. We discuss the approximations made to obtain the effective action in closed form. Among other properties, this effective action admits solitonic solutions of codimension 2 (vortices) when one of the D-brane is far separated from the brane-anti-brane pair.
Wrapping a D(8-p)-brane on AdS_2 times a submanifold of S^{8-p} introduces point-like defects in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence for a Dp-brane background. We classify and work out the details in all possible cases with a single embedding angular coordinate. Brane embeddings of the temperature and beta-deformed near horizon D3-brane backgrounds are also examined. We comment on the relevance of our results to holographic lattices and dimers.
We obtain the leading order corrections to the effective action of an M5-brane wrapping a Riemann surface in the eleven-dimensional supergravity Omega-background. The result can be identified with the first order epsilon-deformation of the Seiberg-Witten effective action of pure SU(2) gauge theory. We also comment on the second order corrections and the generalization to arbitrary gauge group and matter content.
In this note we study the puzzle posed by two M5-branes intersecting on a string (or equivalently, a single M5-brane wrapping a holomorphic four-cycle in C^4). It has been known for a while that this system is different from all other configurations built using self-intersecting M-branes; in particular the corresponding supergravity solution exhibits various curious features which have remained unexplained. We propose that the resolution to these puzzles lies in the existence of a non-zero two-form on the M5-brane world-volume.
We study AdS$_{7}$/CFT$_{6}$ correspondence between M-theory on AdS$_{7} \times S^{4}$ and the 6D $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ superconformal field theory. In particular we focus on Wilson surfaces. We use the conjecture that the (2,0) theory compactified on $S^{1}$ is equivalent to the 5D maximal super Yang-Mills (MSYM) and Wilson surfaces wrapping this $S^1$ correspond to Wilson loops in 5D MSYM. The Wilson loops in 5D MSYM obtained by the localization technique result in the Chern-Simons matrix model. We calculate the expectation values of Wilson surfaces in large rank symmetric representations an…
By wrapping D3-branes over 3-cycles on a half-flat manifold we construct an effective supersymmetric black hole in the N=2 low-energy theory in four-dimensions. Specifically we find that the torsion cycles present in a half-flat compactification, corresponding to the mirror symmetric image of electric NS flux on a Calabi-Yau manifold, manifest in the half-flat black hole as quantum hair. We compute the electric and magnetic charges related to the quantum hair, and also the mass contribution to the effective black hole. We find that by wrapping a number of D3-branes equal to the order of the di…
Based on mirror symmetry, we discuss geometric engineering of N=1 ADE quiver models from F-theory compactifications on elliptic K3 surfaces fibered over certain four-dimensional base spaces. The latter are constructed as intersecting 4-cycles according to ADE Dynkin diagrams, thereby mimicking the construction of Calabi-Yau threefolds used in geometric engineering in type II superstring theory. Matter is incorporated by considering D7-branes wrapping these 4-cycles. Using a geometric procedure referred to as folding, we discuss how the corresponding physics can be converted into a scenario wit…
This note focuses on the coupling of a type IIA D2-brane to a background B field. It is shown that the D0-brane charge arising from the integral over the D2-brane of the pullback of the B field is cancelled by bulk contributions, for a compact D2-brane wrapping a homotopically trivial cycle in space-time. In M-theory this cancellation is a straightforward consequence of momentum conservation. This result resolves a puzzle recently posed by Bachas, Douglas and Schweigert related to the quantization of R-R charges on stable spherical D2-branes on the group manifold SU(2).
These notes are based on lectures given at the Clay School on Geometry and String Theory, Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge, 25 March - 19 April 2002. They attempt to provide an elementary and somewhat self contained discussion of the construction of supergravity solutions describing branes wrapping calibrated cycles, emphasising the geometrical aspects and focusing on D=11 supergravity. Following a discussion of the role of special holonomy backgrounds in D=11 supergravity, the basic membrane and fivebrane solutions are reviewed and the connection with the AdS/CFT correspondence is made. The …
We study adding flavors into the Maldacena-Nŭnez background. It is achieved by introducing spacetime filling D9-branes or intersecting D5$'$-branes into the background with a wrapping D5-brane. Both D9-branes and D5$'$-branes can be spacetime filling from the 5D bulk point of view. At the probe limit it corresponds to introducing non-chiral fundamental flavors into the dual N=1 SYM. We propose a method to twist the fundamental flavor which has to involve open string charge. It reflects the fact that coupling fundamental matter to SYM in the dual string theory corresponds to adding an open stri…
In hep-th/0703135, they have found the type IIA intersecting brane configuration where there exist three NS5-branes, D4-branes and anti-D4-branes. By analyzing the gravitational interaction for the D4-branes in the background of the NS5-branes, the phase structures in different regions of the parameter space were studied in the context of classical string theory. In this paper, by adding the orientifold 4-plane and 6-plane to the above brane configuration, we describe the intersecting brane configurations of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of the…
We study the supergravity duals of supersymmetric theories arising in the world-volume of D6 branes wrapping holomorphic two-cycles and special Lagrangian three-cycles within the framework of eight dimensional gauged supergravity. When uplifted to 11d, our solutions represent M-theory on the background of, respectively, the small resolution of the conifold and a manifold with G_2 holonomy. We further discuss on the flop and other possible geometrical transitions and its implications.
