We study the error threshold of color codes, a class of topological quantum codes that allow a direct implementation of quantum Clifford gates suitable for entanglement distillation, teleportation and fault-tolerant quantum computation. We map the error-correction process onto a statistical mechanical random 3-body Ising model and study its phase diagram via Monte Carlo simulations. The obtained error threshold of p_c = 0.109(2) is very close to that of Kitaev's toric code, showing that enhanced computational capabilities does not necessarily imply lower resistance to noise.
We analytically show the percolation thresholds of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn cluster for the Edwards-Anderson Ising model on random graphs with arbitrary degree distributions. The results on the Nishimori line are shown. We obtain the results for the +-J model, the diluted +-J model, and the Gaussian model, by applying an extension of a criterion for the random graphs with arbitrary degree distributions. The results for the infinite-range $\pm J$ model and the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model are also shown.
Three-dimensional (3D) color codes have advantages for fault-tolerant quantum computing, such as protected quantum gates with relatively low overhead and robustness against imperfect measurement of error syndromes. Here we investigate the storage threshold error rates for bit-flip and phase-flip noise in the 3D color code on the body-centererd cubic lattice, assuming perfect syndrome measurements. In particular, by exploiting a connection between error correction and statistical mechanics, we estimate the threshold for 1D string-like and 2D sheet-like logical operators to be $p^{(1)}_\mathrm{3…
The random field Ising model driven by a slowly varying uniform external field at zero temperature provides a caricature of several threshold activated systems. In this model, the non-equilibrium response of the system can be obtained analytically on a Bethe lattice if the initial state of the system has all spins aligned parallel to each other. We consider ferromagnetic as well as anti-ferromagnetic interactions. The ferromagnetic model exhibits avalanches and non-equilibrium critical behavior. The anti-ferromagnetic model is marked by the absence of these features. The ferromagnetic model is…
The Ising model in a random field and with power-law decaying ferromagnetic bonds is studied at zero temperature. Comparing the scaling of the energy contributions of the ferromagnetic domain wall flip and of the random field a la Imry-Ma we obtain a threshold value for the power $ρ$ of the long-range interaction, beyond which no critical behavior occurs. The critical threshold value is $ρ_c=3/2$, at a difference with the zero field model in which $ρ_c=2$. This prediction is confirmed by numerical computation of the ground states below, at, and above this threshold value. Some possible implica…
The Ising model on networks plays a fundamental role as a testing ground for understanding cooperative phenomena in complex systems. Here we solve the synchronous dynamics of the Ising model on random graphs with an arbitrary degree distribution in the high-connectivity limit. Depending on the distribution of the threshold noise that governs the microscopic dynamics, the model evolves to nonequilibrium stationary states. We obtain an exact dynamical equation for the distribution of local magnetizations, from which we find the critical line that separates the paramagnetic from the ferromagnetic…
Accuracy thresholds of quantum error correcting codes, which exploit topological properties of systems, defined on two different arrangements of qubits are predicted. We study the topological color codes on the hexagonal lattice and on the square-octagonal lattice by the use of mapping into the spin glass systems. The analysis for the corresponding spin glass systems consists of the duality, and the gauge symmetry, which has succeeded in deriving locations of special points, which are deeply related with the accuracy thresholds of topological error correcting codes. We predict that the accurac…
We compute the error threshold of color codes, a class of topological quantum codes that allow a direct implementation of quantum Clifford gates, when both qubit and measurement errors are present. By mapping the problem onto a statistical-mechanical three-dimensional disordered Ising lattice gauge theory, we estimate via large-scale Monte Carlo simulations that color codes are stable against 4.5(2)% errors. Furthermore, by evaluating the skewness of the Wilson loop distributions, we introduce a very sensitive probe to locate first-order phase transitions in lattice gauge theories.
We study the error threshold of topological color codes on Union Jack lattices that allow for the full implementation of the whole Clifford group of quantum gates. After mapping the error-correction process onto a statistical mechanical random 3-body Ising model on a Union Jack lattice, we compute its phase diagram in the temperature-disorder plane using Monte Carlo simulations. Surprisingly, topological color codes on Union Jack lattices have similar error stability than color codes on triangular lattices, as well as the Kitaev toric code. The enhanced computational capabilities of the topolo…
The conjectured exact percolation thresholds of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn cluster for the +-J Ising spin glass model are theoretically shown based on a conjecture. It is pointed out that the percolation transition of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn cluster for the spin glass model is related to a dynamical transition for the freezing of spins. The present results are obtained as locations of points on the so-called Nishimori line, which is a special line in the phase diagram. We obtain TFK = 2 / ln [z / (z - 2)] and pFK = z / [2 (z - 1)] for the Bethe lattice, TFK -> infinity and pFK -> 1 / 2 for the infini…
We consider the problem of coloring Erdos-Renyi and regular random graphs of finite connectivity using q colors. It has been studied so far using the cavity approach within the so-called one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) ansatz. We derive a general criterion for the validity of this ansatz and, applying it to the ground state, we provide evidence that the 1RSB solution gives exact threshold values c_q for the q-COL/UNCOL phase transition. We also study the asymptotic thresholds for q >> 1 finding c_q = 2qlog(q)-log(q)-1+o(1) in perfect agreement with rigorous mathematical bounds, as we…
Phase transitions in the three-dimensional diluted Ising antiferromagnet in an applied magnetic field are analyzed numerically. It is found that random magnetic field in a system with spin concentration below a certain threshold induces a crossover from second-order phase transition to first-order transition to a new phase characterized by a spin-glass ground state and metastable energy states at finite temperatures.
We study the effects of dissipation on a randomly dilute transverse-field Ising magnet at and close to the percolation threshold. For weak transverse fields, a novel percolation quantum phase transition separates a super-paramagnetic cluster phase from an inhomogeneously ordered ferromagnetic phase. The properties of this transition are dominated by large frozen and slowly fluctuating percolation clusters. Implementing numerically a strong-disorder real space renormalization group technique, we compute the low-energy density of states which is found to be in good agreement with the analytical …
We present an efficient algorithm for calculating the properties of Ising models in two dimensions, directly in the spin basis, without the need for mapping to fermion or dimer models. The algorithm gives numerically exact results for the partition function and correlation functions at a single temperature on any planar network of N Ising spins in O(N^{3/2}) time or less. The method can handle continuous or discrete bond disorder and is especially efficient in the case of bond or site dilution, where it executes in O(L^2 ln L) time near the percolation threshold. We demonstrate its feasibility…
We study the effects of dissipation on a randomly diluted transverse-field Ising magnet close to the percolation threshold. For weak transverse fields, a novel percolation quantum phase transition separates a superparamagnetic cluster phase from an inhomogeneously ordered ferromagnetic phase. The properties of this transition are dominated by large frozen and slowly fluctuating percolation clusters. This leads to a discontinuous magnetization-field curve and exotic hysteresis phenomena as well as highly singular behavior of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. We compare our results to t…
Using Monte Carlo simulations we study the Ising model with spin S=1/2 and 1 on {\it directed} and {\it undirected} Erdös-Rényi (ER) random graphs, with $z$ neighbors for each spin. In the case with spin S=1/2, the {\it undirected} and {\it directed} ER graphs present a spontaneous magnetization in the universality class of mean field theory, where in both {\it directed} and {\it undirected} ER graphs the model presents a spontaneous magnetization at $p = z/N$ ($z=2, 3, ...,N$), but no spontaneous magnetization at $p = 1/N$ which is the percolation threshold. For both {\it directed} and {\it u…
The mechanism of appearance of exponentially large number of metastable states in magnetic phases of disordered Ising magnets with short-range random exchange is suggested. It is based on the assumption that transitions into inhomogeneous magnetic phases results from the condensation of macroscopically large number of sparse delocalized modes near the localization threshold. The properties of metastable states in random magnets with zero ground state magnetization (dilute antiferromagnet, binary spin glass, dilute ferromagnet with dipole interaction) has been obtained in framework of this mech…
