The effect of confinement in the segmental relaxation of polymers is considered. On the basis of a thermodynamic model we discuss the emerging relevance of the fast degrees of freedom in stimulating the much slower segmental relaxation, as an effect of the constraints at the walls of the amorphous regions. In the case that confinement is due to the presence of crystalline domains, a quasi-poissonian distribution of local constraining conditions is derived as a result of thermodynamic equilibrium. This implies that the average free energy barrier $ΔF$ for conformational rearrangement is of the same order of the dispersion of the barrier heights, $δ(ΔF)$, around $ΔF$. As an example, we apply the results to the analysis of the $α$-relaxation as observed by dielectric broad band spectroscopy in semicrystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate) cold-crystallized from either an isotropic or an oriented glass. It is found that in the latter case the regions of cooperative rearrangement are significantly larger than in the former.
We perform thorough molecular-dynamics simulations to compare elasticity and yielding of atomic crystals and model semicrystalline polymers, the latter characterized by very similar positional ordering with respect to atomic crystals and considerable bond disorder. We find that the elastic modulus, the shear yield strength and the critical yield strain of semicrystalline polymers are higher than (modulus and yield strength), or comparable to (critical strain), the corresponding ones of atomic crystals. The findings suggest that the bond disorder suppresses dislocation-mediated plasticity in po…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we provide chain-level insights into the dissimilarities in rearrangements of polymers under uniaxial tensile and compressive deformation in glassy and semicrystalline samples of varying chain lengths. The organization of polymers under tension and compression is distinctively different. The chains align themselves along the tensile axis leading to a net global nematic ordering of their bonds and end-to-end vectors whereas under compression, the polymers arrange themselves in a plane perpendicular to the compressive axis resulting in emergence of an anti-n…
Quantitative Lattice Simulations of the Dense Amorphous Phase in Semicrystalline Polymers : Size and Energy Effects in 2-D Lattices
在这项工作中,我们说明了我们对致密无定形聚合物系统的新的定量模拟方法,如我们以前的工作[Kulkarni等人,A Novel Approach for Lattice Simulations of Polymer Chains in Dense Amorphous Polymer Systems:Method Development and Validation with 2-D Lattices,arXiV,2008]在涉及大晶格尺寸和高能偏置的应用中。
We quantify the degree of disorder in the π-π stacking direction of crystallites of a high performing semicrystalline semiconducting polymer with advanced X-ray lineshape analysis. Using first principles calculations, we obtain the density of states of a system of π-π stacked polymer chains with increasing amounts of paracrystalline disorder. We find that for an aligned film of PBTTT the paracrystalline disorder is 7.3%. This type of disorder induces a tail of trap states with a breadth of ~100 meV as determined through calculation. This finding agrees with previous device modeling and provide…
We present results of x-ray study of spatial properties of $π-π$ conjugated networks in polymer thin films. We applied the x-ray cross-correlation analysis to x-ray scattering data from blends of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and gold nanoparticles. The Fourier spectra of the intensity cross-correlation functions for different films contain non-zero components of orders $n=2,4$ and $6$ measuring the degree of structural order in the system.
Charge-carrier transport in a paradigmatic semicrystalline polymer semiconductor (P3HT) is important for both fundamental understanding and applications. In samples with enhanced structural disorder due to ad-hoc point defects, the mobility displays rich behavior as a function of electric field (F) and temperature (T). At low T, the mobility increases with the applied field, but upon further increasing T, the field-dependence becomes shallower. Eventually, at the highest T considered, the slope changes sign and the mobility then decreases with the field. This phenomenon can be interpreted with…
Polybutene-1 (PB-1), a typical semicrystalline polymer, in its stable form I shows a peculiar temperature dependent strain-whitening behavior when being stretched at different temperatures where the extent of strain-whitening weakens with the increasing of stretching temperature reaching a minima value followed by an increase at higher stretching temperatures. Correspondingly, a stronger strain-hardening phenomenon was observed at higher stretching temperatures. The strain-whitening phenomenon in semicrystalline polymers has its origin of cavitation process during stretching. In this work, the…
Modeling the Dielectric Relaxation in Semicrystalline Polymers -- Understanding the Role of the Interphase between the Amorphous and Crystalline Domains
Using molecular dynamics simulations we examine the dynamics of a family of model polymers with varying chain length and torsional potential barriers. We focus on features of the dynamics of polymers that are seen experimentally but absent in simulations of freely rotating and freely jointed chains. The reduced effect of volume on the segmental dynamics with increasing chain length, a capacity for pressure densification, and the deviation from constant Johari-Goldstein relaxation time at constant segmental relaxation time all have a common origin - torsional rigidity, and these effects become …
Dielectric relaxation spectra of block polymers containing sequential type-A dipoles are considered. Spectra of a specific set of block copolymers can be combined to isolate the dynamic cross-correlation between the motions of two distinct parts of the same polymer chain. Unlike past treatments of this problem, no model is assumed for the underlying polymer dynamics.
We present results of an x-ray study of structural properties of semicrystalline polymer films using nanofocused x-ray beam. We applied the x-ray cross-correlation analysis (XCCA) to scattering data from blends of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) embedded with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Spatially resolved maps of orientational distribution of crystalline domains allow us to distinguish sample regions of predominant face-on morphology, with a continuous transition to edge-on morphology. The average size of crystalline domains was determined to be of the order of 10 nm. As compared to pristine P3HT…
The emergent photoactive materials through photochemistry make it possible to directly convert photon energy to mechanical work. There is much recent work in developing appropriate materials and a promising new system is semi-crystalline polymers of the photoactive molecule azobenzene. We develop a phase field model with two order parameters for the crystal-melt transition and the trans-cis photo-isomerization to understand such materials, and the model describes the rich phenomenology. We find that the photo-reaction rate depends sensitively on temperature: at temperatures below the crystal-m…
Glassy polymers show strain hardening: at constant extensional load, their flow first accelerates, then arrests. Recent experiments have found this to be accompanied by a striking and unexplained dip in the segmental relaxation time. Here we explain such behavior by combining a minimal model of flow-induced liquefaction of a glass, with a description of the stress carried by strained polymers, creating a non-factorable interplay between aging and strain-induced rejuvenation. Under constant load, liquefaction of segmental motion permits strong flow that creates polymer-borne stress. This slows …
Physically confining polymers into nanoscale pores induces significant changes in their dynamics. Although different results on the effect of confinement on the dynamics of polymers have been reported, changes in the segmental mobility of polymers typically are correlated with changes in their chain mobility due to increased monomeric relaxation times. In this study, we show that translational and segmental dynamics of polymers confined in disordered packings of nanoparticles can exhibit completely opposite behavior. We monitor the capillary rise dynamics of entangled polystyrene (PS) in disor…
Simulating soft matter systems such as the cytoskeleton can enable deep understanding of experimentally observed phenomena. One challenge of modeling such systems is realistic description of the steric repulsion between nearby polymers. Previous models of the polymeric excluded volume interaction have the deficit of being non-analytic, being computationally expensive, or allowing polymers to erroneously cross each other. A recent solution to these issues, implemented in the MEDYAN simulation platform, uses analytical expressions obtained from integrating an interaction kernel along the lengths…
We present an extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study of the lithium ion transport in ternary polymer electrolytes consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), lithium-bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) and the ionic liquid N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (PYR13TFSI). In particular, we focus on two different strategies by which the ternary electrolytes can be devised, namely by (a) adding the ionic liquid to PEO20LiTFSI, and (b) substituting the PEO chains in PEO20LiTFSI by the ionic liquid. In order to grasp the changes of the overall lithium tra…
The polymer dynamics of homogeneous C$_{60}$-polystyrene mixtures in the molten state are studied via molecular simulations using two interconnected levels of representation for polystyrene nanocomposites: (a) A coarse-grained representation, in which each polystyrene repeat unit is mapped into a single "superatom" and each fullerene is viewed as a spherical shell. Equilibration of coarse-grained polymer-nanoparticle systems at all length scales is achieved via connectivity-altering Monte Carlo simulations. (b) An atomistic representation, where both nanoparticles and polymer chains are repres…
Glassy polymers show strain hardening: at constant extensional load, their flow first accelerates, then arrests. Recent experiments under such loading have found this to be accompanied by a striking dip in the segmental relaxation time. This can be explained by a minimal nonfactorable model combining flow-induced melting of a glass with the buildup of stress carried by strained polymers. Within this model, liquefaction of segmental motion permits strong flow that creates polymer-borne stress, slowing the deformation enough for the segmental (or solvent) modes to then re-vitrify. Here we presen…
Structure, Dynamics and Hydrogen Transport in Amorphous Polymers: An Analysis of the Interplay Between Free Volume Element Distribution and Local Segmental Dynamics from Molecular Dynamics Simulations
The presence of a viscoelastic mechanism distinctly different from the segmental a-relaxation and the Rouse modes within the glass-rubber transition zone of polymers had been justified by theoretical considerations, and subsequently experimentally verified in different bulk polymers by various techniques, and in several laboratories. Referred to in the literature as the sub-Rouse modes, they were also found in polymer thin films by the creep compliance measurements of McKenna and co-workers Established by experiment and theoretical considerations is the enhanced mobility of sub-Rouse modes in …
The relation between elasticity and yielding is investigated in a model polymer solid by Molecular-Dynamics simulations. By changing the bending stiffness of the chain and the bond length, semicrystalline and disordered glassy polymers - both with bond disorder - as well as nematic glassy polymers with bond ordering are obtained. It is found that in systems with bond disorder the ratio Ty/G between the shear yield strength Ty and the shear modulus G is close to the universal value of the atomic metallic glasses. The increase of the local nematic order in glasses leads to the increase of the sh…
A molecular level analysis of segmental trajectories obtained from molecular dynamics simulations is used to obtain the full relaxation time spectrum in aging polymer glasses subject to three different deformation protocols. As in experiments, dynamics can be accelerated by several orders of magnitude, and a narrowing of the distribution of relaxation times during creep is directly observed. Additionally, the acceleration factor describing the transformation of the relaxation time distributions is computed and found to obey a universal dependence on the global strain, independent of age and de…
We report the ion transport mechanisms in succinonitrile (SN) loaded solid polymer electrolytes containing polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dissolved lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulphonamide (LiTFSI) salt using molecular dynamics simulations. We investigated the effect of temperature and loading of SN on ion transport and relaxation phenomenon in PEO-LiTFSI electrolytes. It is observed that SN increases the ionic diffusivities in PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes and makes them suitable for battery applications. Interestingly, the diffusion coefficient of TFSI ions is an order of magnitude hig…
We describe an apparatus for performing constant strain rate deformations of polymer glasses while simultaneously measuring the segmental mobility with an optical probe reorientation method. Poly(methyl methacrylate) glasses were deformed at Tg - 19 K, for local strain rates between 3.7x10-5/s and 1.2x10-4/s. In these experiments, the mobility initially increases in the pre-yield regime, by a factor of 40 to 160, as compared to the undeformed PMMA glass. The mobility then remains constant after yield, even as the stress is decreasing due to strain softening. This is consistent with the view th…
The local segmental and global dynamics of a series of polypropylene glycol / silica nanocomposites were studied using rheometry and mechanical and dielectric spectroscopies. The particles cause substantial changes in the rheology, including higher viscosities that become non-Newtonian and the appearance of stress overshoots in the transient shear viscosity. However, no change was observed in the mean relaxation times for either the segmental or normal mode dynamics measured dielectrically. This absence of an effect of the particles is due to masking of the interfacial response by polymer chai…
We investigate the dynamics of nanoparticles in semidilute polymer solutions when the nanoparticles are comparably sized to the polymer coils using explicit- and implicit-solvent simulation methods. The nanoparticle dynamics are subdiffusive on short time scales before transitioning to diffusive motion on long time scales. The long-time diffusivities scale according to theoretical predictions based on full dynamic coupling to the polymer segmental relaxations. In agreement with our recent experiments, however, we observe that the nanoparticle subdiffusive exponents are significantly larger tha…
To understand the role of collective motion in the often large changes in interfacial molecular mobility observed in polymer films, we investigate the extent of collective motion in the interfacial regions of a thin supported polymer film and within the film interior by molecular dynamics simulation. Contrary to commonly stated expectations, we find that the extent of collective motion, as quantified by string-like molecular exchange motion, is similar in magnitude in polymer-air interfacial layer to that in the film interior, and both are generally distinct from the bulk material. This findin…
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the effects of deformation on the segmental dynamics in an aging polymer glass. Individual particle trajectories are decomposed into a series of discontinuous hops, from which we obtain the full distribution of relaxation times and displacements under three deformation protocols: step stress (creep), step strain, and constant strain rate deformation. As in experiments, the dynamics can be accelerated by several orders of magnitude during deformation, and the history dependence is entirely erased during yield (mechanical rejuvenation). Agin…
The dynamics of structural relaxation in a model polymer glass subject to spatially-homogeneous, time-periodic shear deformation is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study a coarse-grained bead-spring model of short polymer chains below the glass transition temperature. It is found that at small strain amplitudes, the segmental dynamics is nearly reversible over about $10^4$ cycles, while at strain amplitudes above a few percent, polymer chains become fully relaxed after a hundred cycles. At the critical strain amplitude, the transition from slow to fast relaxation dynamics…
Polymer nanoparticle composites (PNC) with ultra high loading of nanoparticles (> 50%) have been shown to exhibit markedly improved strength, stiffness, and toughness simultaneously compared to the neat systems of their components. Recent experimental studies on the effect of polymer fill fraction in these highly loaded PNCs reveal that even at low polymer fill fractions, hardness and modulus increase significantly. In this work, we aim to understand the origin of these performance enhancements by examining the dynamics of both polymer and nanoparticles (NP) under tensile deformation. We perfo…
Quantitatively Connecting Experimental Time-Temperature-Superposition-Breakdown of Polymers near the Glass Transition to Dynamic Heterogeneity via the Heterogeneous Rouse Model
Bonding between polymeric interfaces is encountered widely in several industrial applications. Many of these bonding processes rely on time-consuming and temperature-dependent classical mechanism of polymer interdiffusion via reptation in a melt state. Here, for the first time, we report a new mechanistic pathway for achieving solid-state polymer bonding by triggering rapid macromolecular acceleration through mechanical deformation. Large-scale molecular simulations reveal that active plastic deformation in glassy polymers, at temperatures well-below the bulk (and surface) glass transition tem…

Using molecular simulations and theory, we develop an explicit mapping of the contribution of molecular relaxation modes in glassy thermosets to the shear modulus, where the relaxations were tuned by altering the polarity of side groups. Specifically, motions at the domain, segmental, monomer, and atomic levels are taken from molecular dynamics snapshots and directly linked with the viscoelasticity through a framework based in the lattice dynamics of amorphous solids. This unique approach provides direct insight into the roles of chemical groups in the stress response, including the timescale …
