We show that the statistics of the charge transfer of non-interacting fermions through a two-lead contact is generalized binomial, at any temperature and for any form of the scattering matrix: an arbitrary charge-transfer process can be decomposed into independent single-particle events. This result generalizes previous studies of adiabatic pumping at zero temperature and of transport induced by bias voltage.
Similarly to the recently obtained result for two-terminal systems, we show that there are constraints on the full counting statistics for non-interacting fermions in multi-terminal contacts. In contrast to the two-terminal result, however, there is no factorization property in the multi-terminal case.
We evaluate the spectral function of interacting fermions in one dimension. Contrary to the Tomonaga-Luttinger model, our treatment accounts for the nonlinearity of the free fermion spectrum. In a striking departure from the Luttinger liquid theory, the spectrum nonlinearity restores the main feature of the Fermi liquid: a Lorentzian peak in the spectral function on the particle mass-shell. At the same time, the spectral function displays a power-law singularity on the hole mass-shell, similar to that in the Luttinger liquid.
The physics of Majorana fermion occurs at the edge and interface of many one-dimensional quantum many body system with gapped excitation spectrum. We present the renormalization group equations for strongly interacting helical liquid. We present the results of both Majorana- Ising topological quantum phase transition and also Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless topological phase transition. We show that the Majorana-Ising topological quantum phase transition for non-interacting case is an exactly solvable line but in presence of interaction the system has no exactly solvable line. We study the eff…
A system of N interacting bosons or fermions in a two-dimensional harmonic potential (or, equivalently, magnetic field) whose states are projected onto the lowest Landau level is considered. Generic expressions are derived for matrix elements of any interaction, in the basis of angular momentum eigenstates. For the fermion "ground state" (N=1 Laughlin state), this makes it possible to exactly calculate its energy all the way up to the mesoscopic regime N ~ 1000. It is also shown that for N = 3 and Coulomb interaction, several rational low-lying values of energy exist, for bosons and fermions a…
The spectral properties of a disordered system with few interacting three-dimensional spinless fermions are investigated. We show the existence of a critical spacings distribution which is invariant upon increase of the system size, but strongly depends on the number of particles. At the critical point, we report a substantial decrease of the degree of level repulsion as the number of particles increases indicating a decrease of nearest level correlations associated with the sparsity of the Hamiltonian matrix.
The non-perturbative effect of interaction can sometimes make interacting bosons behave as though they were free fermions. The system of neutral bosons in a rapidly rotating atomic trap is equivalent to charged bosons coupled to a magnetic field, which has opened up the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect for bosons interacting with a short range interaction. Motivated by the composite fermion theory of the fractional Hall effect of electrons, we test the idea that the interacting bosons map into non-interacting spinless fermions carrying one vortex each, by comparing wave functions …
Much of the present day qualitative phenomenology of the fractional quantum Hall effect can be understood by neglecting the interactions between composite fermions altogether. For example the fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=n/(2pn\pm 1)$ corresponds to filled composite-fermion Landau levels, and the compressible state at $ν=1/2p$ to the Fermi sea of composite fermions. Away from these filling factors, the residual interactions between composite fermions will determine the nature of the ground state. In this article, a model is constructed for the residual interaction between composite ferm…
A simple equivalent circuit, which describes transport properties of a Two Dimensional Electron Gas in the Fractional Quantum Hall regime is presented. The physical justifications for this equivalent circuit are discussed in the frame work of the non-interacting Composite Fermions model. Quantum Shot Noise at an arbitrary filling factor and temperature is readily calculated.
The construction and classification of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting bosonic and fermionic systems have been intensively studied in the past few years. Very recently, a complete classification and construction of space group SPT phases were also proposed for interacting bosonic systems. In this paper, we attempt to generalize this classification and construction scheme systematically into interacting fermion systems. In particular, we construct and classify point group SPT phases for 2D interacting fermion systems via lower-dimensional block-state decorations. We d…
Spin excitations from a partially populated composite fermion level are studied above and below $ν=1/3$. In the range $2/7<ν<2/5$ the experiments uncover significant departures from the non-interacting composite fermion picture that demonstrate the increasing impact of interactions as quasiparticle Landau levels are filled. The observed onset of a transition from free to interacting composite fermions could be linked to condensation into the higher order states suggested by transport experiments and numerical evaluations performed in the same filling factor range.
We study transport in a class of exactly solvable models of interacting fermions in one dimension. We contrast these models with models of non-interacting fermions in an Aharanov-Bohm ring to which they are superficially similar. We introduce magnetic and non-magnetic impurities at a site, through either a weak $δ$-function potential or through a weak link. Using a renormalisation group analysis, we show that the strength of the nonmagnetic impurity is not affected by the interaction, whereas the magnetic impurity cuts the wire at the impurity site.
There is increasing experimental evidence for fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν=2+3/8$. Modeling it as a system of composite fermions, we study the problem of interacting composite fermions by a number of methods. In our variational study, we consider the Fermi sea, the Pfaffian paired state, and bubble and stripe phases of composite fermions, and find that the Fermi sea state is favored for a wide range of transverse thickness. However, when we incorporate interactions between composite fermions through composite-fermion diagonalization on systems with up to 25 composite fer…
We study the nature of many-body eigenstates of a system of interacting chiral spinless fermions on a ring. We find a coexistence of fermionic and bosonic types of eigenstates in parts of the many-body spectrum. Some bosonic eigenstates, native to the strong interaction limit, persist at intermediate and weak couplings, enabling persistent density oscillations in the system, despite it being far from integrability.
In this work we study interacting spinless fermions on a two-chain ladder with inter-chain pair tunneling while single-particle tunneling is suppressed at low energy. The model embodies a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry associated with the fermion parity on each chain. We find that when the system is driven to the strong-coupling phase by the pair tunneling, Majorana excitations appear on the boundary. Such Majorana edge states correspond to two-fold degeneracy of ground states distinguished by different fermion parity on each chain, thus representing a generalization of one-dimensional topological su…
It is argued that the specific heat of $N$ massless Dirac fermions in 2 spatial dimensions interacting with 1/r Coulomb interactions is suppressed logarithmically relative to its non-interacting counterpart. The (dimensionless) coefficient of the logarithm is calculated analytically in the leading order in large $N$ expansion, but to all orders in $e^2N$, a procedure which takes into account finite temperature screening. Experimental observation of this effect is expected to occur in a single layer graphene embedded in a dielectric medium. Its dependence on the dielectric constant is calculate…
We study interacting Dirac quasiparticles in disordered graphene and find that an interplay between the unscreened Coulomb interactions and pseudo-relativistic quasiparticle kinematics can be best revealed in the ballistic regime, whereas in the diffusive limit the behavior is qualitatively (albeit, not quantitatively) similar to that of the ordinary 2DEG with parabolic dispersion. We calculate the quasiparticle width and density of states that can be probed by photoemission, tunneling, and magnetization measurements.
After briefly recalling the quantum entanglement-based view of topological phases of matter in order to outline the general context, we give an overview of different approaches to the classification problem of topological insulators and superconductors of non-interacting Fermions. In particular, we review in some detail general symmetry aspects of the "ten-fold way" which forms the foundation of the classification, and put different approaches to the classification in relationship with each other. We end by briefly mentioning some of the results obtained on the effect of interactions, mainly i…
We study the eigenstates of two opposite spin fermions on a one-dimensional lattice with finite range interaction. The eigenstates are projected onto the set of Fock eigenstates of the noninteracting case. We find antiresonances for symmetric eigenstates, which eliminate the interaction between two symmetric Fock states when satisfying a corresponding selection rule.
We propose a method of simulating efficiently many-body interacting fermion lattice models in trapped ions, including highly nonlinear interactions in arbitrary spatial dimensions and for arbitrarily distant couplings. We map products of fermionic operators onto nonlocal spin operators and decompose the resulting dynamics in efficient steps with Trotter methods, yielding an overall protocol that employs only polynomial resources. The proposed scheme can be relevant in a variety of fields as condensed-matter or high-energy physics, where quantum simulations may solve problems intractable for cl…
