Water-soluble clusters made from 7 nm inorganic nanoparticles have been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering. The internal structure factor of the clusters was derived and exhibited a universal behavior as evidenced by a correlation hole at intermediate wave-vectors. Reverse Monte-Carlo calculations were performed to adjust the data and provided an accurate description of the clusters in terms of interparticle distance and volume fraction. Additional parameters influencing the microstructure were also investigated, including the nature and thickness of the nanoparticle adlayer.
The dynamics of polymer-nanoparticle (NP) mixtures, which involves multiple scales and system-specific variables, has posed a long-standing challenge on its theoretical description. In this paper, we construct a microscopic theory for polymer diffusion in the mixtures based on a combination of generalized Langevin equation, mode-coupling approach, and polymer physics ideas. The parameter-free theory has an explicit expression and remains tractable on pair correlation level with system-specific equilibrium structures as input. Taking a minimal polymer-NP mixture as an example, our theory correc…
The Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij (AOV) model of colloid-polymer mixtures idealizes nonadsorbing polymers as effective spheres that are fixed in size and impenetrable to hard particles. Real polymer coils, however, are intrinsically polydisperse in size (radius of gyration) and may be penetrated by smaller particles. Crowding by nanoparticles can affect the size distribution of polymer coils, thereby modifying effective depletion interactions and thermodynamic stability. To analyse the influence of crowding on polymer conformations and demixing phase behaviour, we adapt the AOV model to mixtures of nano…
We examine the dynamics of silica particles grafted with high molecular weight polystyrene suspended in semidilute solutions of chemically similar linear polymer using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. The particle dynamics decouple from the bulk viscosity despite their large hydrodynamic size and instead experience an effective viscosity that depends on the molecular weight of the free polymer chains. Unlike for hard sphere nanoparticles in semidilute polymer solutions, the diffusivities of the polymer-grafted nanoparticles do not collapse onto a master curve as a function of normalized …
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the self-assembly of model nanoparticles inside a matrix of model equilibrium polymers (or matrix of Wormlike micelles) as a function of the polymeric matrix density and the excluded volume parameter between polymers and nanoparticles. In this paper, we show morphological transitions in the system architecture via synergistic self-assembly of nanoparticles and the equilibrium polymers. In a synergistic self-assembly, the resulting morphology of the system is a result of the interaction between both nanoparticles and the polymers, unlike the polymer…
We investigate the dynamics of nanoparticles in semidilute polymer solutions when the nanoparticles are comparably sized to the polymer coils using explicit- and implicit-solvent simulation methods. The nanoparticle dynamics are subdiffusive on short time scales before transitioning to diffusive motion on long time scales. The long-time diffusivities scale according to theoretical predictions based on full dynamic coupling to the polymer segmental relaxations. In agreement with our recent experiments, however, we observe that the nanoparticle subdiffusive exponents are significantly larger tha…
Macromolecular crowding can influence polymer shapes, which is important for understanding the thermodynamic stability of polymer solutions and the structure and function of biopolymers (proteins, RNA, DNA) under confinement. We explore the influence of nanoparticle crowding on polymer shapes via Monte Carlo simulations and free-volume theory of a coarse-grained model of polymer-nanoparticle mixtures. Exploiting the geometry of random walks, we model polymer coils as effective penetrable ellipsoids, whose shapes fluctuate according to the probability distributions of the eigenvalues of the gyr…
We report a novel class of polymer nanocomposite composed of organic nanoparticles dispersed in polymer matrix, with the particle sizes of 30-120 nm in radius. The organic nanoparticles were formed by the self-assembly of protonated poly(4-vinyl-pyridine)-r-poly(acrylonitrile) and amphiphilic metanil yellow dye molecules through electrostatic interactions in aqueous solution. A strongly broadened Raman shift band was probed, suggesting the presence of enhanced optoelectronic property from the polymer nanocomposite. Here, using random-copolymer polyelectrolytes and mesogenic amphiphiles as the …
We investigate the phase behavior of athermal polymer/nanoparticle blends near a hard substrate. We apply the density functional theory of Tripathi and Chapman to these blends. We find a first order phase transition where the nanoparticles expel the polymer from the surface to form a monolayer. The transition density depends on the polymer length and the system bulk density. The effect is due to the packing entropy of the species and configurational entropy of the polymer. The simplicity of the system allows us to understand the so-called ``entropic-push'' observed in experiments.
The nanoparticle-Equilibrium polymer (or Wormlike micellar) system shows morphological changes from percolating network-like structures to non-percolating clusters with a change in the minimum approaching distance (EVP-excluded volume parameter) between nanoparticles and the matrix of equilibrium polymers. The shape anisotropy of nanoparticle clusters can be controlled by changing the polymer density. In this paper, the synergistic self-assembly of nanoparticles inside equilibrium polymeric matrix (or Wormlike micellar matrix) is investigated with respect to the change in the strength of attra…
Magnetic composite materials i.e. elastomers, polymer gels, or polymer solutions with embedded magnetic nanoparticles are useful for many technical and bio-medical applications. However, the microscopic details of the coupling mechanisms between the magnetic properties of the particles and the mechanical properties of the (visco)elastic polymer matrix remain unresolved. Here we study the response of a single-domain spherical magnetic nanoparticle that is suspended in a polymer solution to alternating magnetic fields. As interactions we consider only excluded volume interactions with the polyme…
Depletion forces and macromolecular crowding govern the structure and function of biopolymers in biological cells and the properties of polymer nanocomposite materials. To isolate and analyze the influence of polymer shape fluctuations and penetrability on depletion-induced interactions and crowding by nanoparticles, we model polymers as effective penetrable ellipsoids, whose shapes fluctuate according to the probability distributions of the eigenvalues of the gyration tensor of an ideal random walk. Within this model, we apply Monte Carlo simulation methods to compute the depletion-induced po…
We investigate the impact of nanoparticles (NP) on the fragility and cooperative string-like motion in a model glass-forming polymer melt by molecular dynamics simulation. The NP cause significant changes to both the fragility and the average length of string-like motion, where the effect depends on the NP-polymer interaction and the NP concentration. We interpret these changes via the Adam-Gibbs (AG) theory, assuming the strings can be identified with the "cooperatively rearranging regions" of AG. Our findings indicate fragility is primarily a measure of the temperature dependence of the coop…
The crazing behavior of polymer nanocomposites formed by blending polymer grafted nanoparticles with an entangled polymer melt is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on the three key differences in the crazing behavior of a composite relative to the pure homopolymer matrix, namely, a lower yield stress, a smaller extension ratio and a grafted chain length dependent failure stress. The yield behavior is found to be mostly controlled by the local nanoparticle-grafted polymer interfacial energy, with the grafted polymer-polymer matrix interfacial structure being of little to no re…
The advances in new technologies have prompted the need for functional systems smaller than the gyration radius of polymer chains. Thus, understanding how nanoconfinement affects polymer properties has been the focus of a lot of research for over a decade. Polystyrene in particular has been reported to be strongly affected when nanoconfined as a thin film and specifically its glass transition temperature (Tg) is reported to decrease with decreasing film thickness. Tremendous effort has been dedicated to developing methods for quantifying the large-scale dynamic of nanoconfined polymers: film d…
We investigated the formation of cocontinuous structures in polymer blends. These polymeric bijels (bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels) were composed of polystyrene oligomer, polybutene and fluorescent hydrophobic silica nanoparticles. A micron-sized cocontinuous morphology was stabilized by a monolayer of silica nanoparticles at the interface. Real-time observation of coalescence dynamics in co-continuous polymer blends stabilized by interfacial particles was for the first time achieved via laser scanning confocal microscopy. We demonstrated that suppression of coalescence arises…
We propose a two-body spherically symmetric (isotropic) potential such that particles interacting by the potential self assemble into linear semiflexible polymeric chains without branching. By suitable control of the potential parameters we can control the persistence length of the polymer, and can even introduce a controlled number of branches. Thus we show how to achieve effective directional interactions starting from spherically symmetric potentials. The self assembled polymers have a exponential distribution of chain lengths akin to what is observed for worm-like micellar systems. On incr…
Nanoparticles with hydrophobic capping ligands and amphiphilic phospholipids are both found to self-assemble into monolayer films when deposited on the air water interface. By separately measuring the anisotropic stress response of these films under uniaxial compression, we obtain both the 2D compressive and shear moduli of a range of different thin nanoparticle and phospholipid films. The compressive moduli of both nanoparticle and lipid films in the solid phase are on the same order of magnitude, whereas the shear moduli of the lipid films are found to be significantly lower. Additionally th…
It has recently been proposed that the miscibility of nanoparticles with a polymer matrix can be controlled by grafting polymer chains to the nanoparticle surface. As a first step to study this situation, we have used molecular dynamics simulations on a single nanoparticle of radius R ($4σ\le$R$\le 16σ$, where $σ$ is the diameter of a polymer monomer) grafted with chains of length 500 in a polymer melt of chains of length 1000. The grafting density $Σ$ was varied between $0.04$-$0.32$ chains/$σ^2$. To facilitate equilibration a Monte Carlo double-bridging algorithm is applied - new bonds are f…
A new method based on the combination of small-anglescattering, reverse Monte Carlo simulations, and an aggregate recognition algorithm is proposed to characterize the structure of nanoparticle suspensions in solvents and polymer nanocomposites, allowing detailedstudies of the impact of different nanoparticle surface modifications.Experimental small-angle scattering is reproduced using simulated annealing of configurations of polydisperse particles in a simulation box compatible with the lowest experimental q-vector. Then, properties of interest likeaggregation states are extracted from these …
Polymer nanoparticle composites (PNC) with ultra high loading of nanoparticles (> 50%) have been shown to exhibit markedly improved strength, stiffness, and toughness simultaneously compared to the neat systems of their components. Recent experimental studies on the effect of polymer fill fraction in these highly loaded PNCs reveal that even at low polymer fill fractions, hardness and modulus increase significantly. In this work, we aim to understand the origin of these performance enhancements by examining the dynamics of both polymer and nanoparticles (NP) under tensile deformation. We perfo…
We investigate the length distribution of self-assembled, long and stiff polymers at thermal equilibrium. Our analysis is based on calculating the partition functions of stiff polymers of variable lengths in the elastic regime. Our conclusion is that the length distribution of this self-assembled system follows closely the exponential distribution, except at the short length limit. We then discuss the implications of our results on the experimentally observed length distributions in amyloid fibrils.
Some of our recent studies of the structure and mechanical properties of a special type of nanocomposite are reviewed here. In silica-latex systems, a latex film with silica inclusions is formed from a colloidal solution of both components. During drying of the solution, the formation of silica domains can be controlled via the physico-chemical properties of the solution. Well-defined silica aggregates embedded in a polymer matrix can be generated, and the mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposite have been shown to be directly correlated to the average structure.
Field-theoretical method is efficient in predicting the assembling structures of polymeric systems. However, for the polymer/nanoparticle mixture, the continuous density description is not suitable to capture the realistic assembly of particles, especially when the size of particle is much larger than the polymer segment. Here, we developed a field-based model, in which the particles are eventually discrete and hence it can overcome the drawbacks of the conventional field descriptions, e.g., inadequate and crude treatment on the polymer-particle interface and the excluded-volume interaction. W…
We investigate the effect of the size of nanoparticles on the behaviour of equilibrium polymers (Wormlike micelles) and nanoparticle system. The self-organised structures of nanoparticles in the system show a morphological change from percolating networks to non-percolating clusters with an increase in the minimum approaching distance (EVP-excluded volume parameter) between nanoparticles and the equilibrium polymers. The shape of the nanoparticle clusters (nanorods, nanosheets, etc.) depends on the density of the polymer matrix, irrespective of the size of nanoparticles. We show that with an i…
We investigate the effect of polymer length dispersity on the properties of self-assembled micelles in solution by self-consistent field calculations. Polydispersity stabilizes micelles by raising the free energy barriers of micelle formation and dissolution. Most importantly, it significantly reduces the size fluctuations of micelles: Block copolymers of moderate polydispersity form more uniform particles than their monodisperse counterparts. We attribute this to the fact that the packing of the solvophobic monomers in the core can be optimized if the constituent polymers have different lengt…
We report on the formation and the structural properties of supermicellar aggregates also called electrostatic complexes, made from mineral nanoparticles and polyelectrolyte-neutral block copolymers in aqueous solutions. The mineral particles put under scrutiny are ultra-fine and positively charged yttrium hydroxyacetate nanoparticles. Combining light, neutron and x-ray scattering experiments, we have characterized the sizes and the aggregation numbers of the organic-inorganic complexes. We have found that the hybrid aggregates have typical sizes in the range 100 nm and exhibit a remarkable co…
Ordering nanoparticles into a desired super-structure is often crucial for their technological applications. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the assembly of nanoparticles in a polymer brush randomly grafted to a planar surface as the solvent evaporates. Initially, the nanoparticles are dispersed in a solvent that wets the polymer brush. After the solvent evaporates, the nanoparticles are either inside the brush or adsorbed at the surface of the brush, depending on the strength of the nanoparticle-polymer interaction. For strong nanoparticle-polymer interactions, a 2-dimensional …
A novel type of hybrid colloids is presented, based on the association of several polymeric systems and ferrofluids. On the one hand, we use inorganic nanoparticles made of magnetic iron oxide prepared at the LI2C, which response to a magnetic field of low intensity. On the other hand the organic part is made either of long linear polyacrylamide chains or of mesoscopic structures (vesicles and micelles) self-assembled from amphiphile polybutadiene-b-poly(glutamic acid) di-block copolymers, which conformation is pH-sensitive.
This work presents a cost-effective alternative technology for the formation of nanostructured semiconductor materials for tunable light emitting devices. CdS and ZnS semiconducting colloid nanoparticles coated with organic shell, containing either SO3- or NH3+ groups, were deposited as thin films using the technique of electrostatic self-assembly. The films produced were characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry and AFM. UV-vis spectra show a substantial blue shift of the main absorption band of both CdS and ZnS with respect to the bulk materials due to the phenomenon…
Grafting polymer chains on nanoparticles surfaces is a well-known route to control their self assembly and distribution in a polymer matrix. A wide variety of self assembled structures are achieved by changing the grafting patterns on an individual nanoparticle surface. However, accurate estimation of the effective potential of mean force between a pair of grafted nanoparticles that determines their assembly and distribution in a polymer matrix is an outstanding challenge in nanoscience. Here, we propose a new deep learning method that learns the interaction between a pair of grafted nanoparti…
The existence of magnetic dipolar nanoparticle chains at zero field has been predicted theoretically for decades, but these structures are rarely observed experimentally. A prerequisite is a permanent magnetic moment on the particles forming the chain. Here we report on the observation of magnetic dipolar chains of spherical iron oxide nanoparticles with a diameter of \SI{12.8}{\nano\meter}. The nanoparticles are embedded in an ultrathin polymer film. Due to the high viscosity of the polymer matrix, the dominating aggregation mechanism is driven by dipolar interactions. Smaller iron oxide nano…
Physically assembled gels have promising applications in many fields because of their tunable mechanical properties. Here, we report the mechanical properties as a function of polymer volume fraction ($ϕ$) for a physical gel system consists of poly(styrene)-poly(isoprene)-poly(styrene) [PS-PI-PS] in mineral oil. The PI-block molecular weight is higher than the entanglement molecular weight, which leads to the entanglement of PI-blocks at higher $ϕ$. The micellar microstructure for all gels results in a similar stress relaxation mechanism, as captured by the superposition of stress-relaxation r…
We perform a thermodynamic analysis of the polymerization-induced phase separation in nanoparticle-monomer-polymer blends using a simple model recently proposed by V. V. Ginzburg (Macromolecules 2005, 38, 2362.). The model was adapted for ternary blends constituted by nanoparticles, a monomer and a linear polymer, where the relative fractions of polymer and monomer determine the conversion in the polymerization reaction. The analysis showed that phase separation can occur in the course of polymerization for a large range of values of the relevant parameters (interaction parameter, and polymer …
By means of molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the formation of single-chain nanoparticles through intramolecular cross-linking of polymer chains, in the presence of their precursors acting as purely steric crowders in concentrated solution. In the case of the linear precursors, the structure of the resulting SCNPs is weakly affected by the density at which the synthesis is performed. Crowding has significant effects if ring precursors are used: higher concentrations lead to the formation of SCNPs with more compact and spherical morphologies. Such SCNPs retain in the swollen state (…
We study the change of the size and structure of freely suspended single lamella nanoparticles of polyethylene during thermal annealing in aqueous solutions. Using small-angle x-ray scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, it is shown that a doubling of the crystalline lamella sandwiched between two amorphous polymer layers is obtained by annealing the nanoparticles at 125 C. This thickening of the crystalline lamella can be understood in terms of an unlooping of polymer chains within a single nanoparticle. In addition a variation of the annealing temperature from 90 C to 115…
Bright, saturated structural colors in birds have inspired synthesis of self-assembled, disordered arrays of assembled nanoparticles with varied particle spacings and refractive indices. However, predicting colors of assembled nanoparticles, and thereby guiding their synthesis, remains challenging due to the effects of multiple scattering and strong absorption. Here, we use a computational approach to first reconstruct the nanoparticles' assembled structures from small-angle scattering measurements and then input the reconstructed structures to a finite-difference time-domain method to predict…
The structural features of polystyrene brushes grafted on spherical silica nanoparticles immersed in polystyrene are investigated by means of a Monte Carlo methodology based on polymer mean field theory. The nanoparticle radii (either 8 nm or 13 nm) are held constant, while the grafting density and the lengths of grafted and matrix chains are varied systematically in a series of simulations. The primary objective of this work is to simulate realistic nanocomposite systems of specific chemistry at experimentally accessible length scales and study the structure and scaling of the grafted brush. …
Mesoparticles consisting of a hard core and a soft corona like polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) can assemble into various superlattice structures, in which each mesoparticle assumes the shape of the corresponding Wigner-Seitz (or Voronoi) cell. Conventional wisdom often perceives the stability of these superlattices in a mean-field view of surface area minimization or corona entropy maximization, which lacks a molecular interpretation. We develop a simulation method to calculate the free energy cost to deform spherical PGNPs into Wigner-Seitz polyhedra, which are then relaxed in a certain…
We analyze transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of self-assembled quasicrystals, composed of binary systems of nanoparticles. We use an automated procedure that identifies the positions of dislocations and determines their topological character. To achieve this we decompose the quasicrystal into its individual density modes, or Fourier components, and identify their topological winding numbers for every dislocation. This procedure associates a Burgers function with each dislocation, from which we extract the components of the Burgers vector after choosing a basis. The Burgers vectors …
Reinforcement of elastomers by colloidal nanoparticles is an important application where microstructure needs to be understood - and if possible controlled - if one wishes to tune macroscopic mechanical properties. Here the three-dimensional structure of big aggregates of nanometric silica particles embedded in a soft polymeric matrix is determined by Small Angle Neutron Scattering. Experimentally, the crowded environment leading to strong reinforcement induces a strong interaction between aggregates, which generates a prominent interaction peak in the scattering. We propose to analyze the tot…
Oils and fragrances can be encapsulated by using composite shells of silica nanoparticles, polymer and surfactant (potassium oleate). The template for the creation of the core-shell structure is a particle stabilized (Pickering) emulsion. The surfactant adsorbs on the nanoparticles and leads to their reversible hydrophobization and adsorption on the oil-water interface. The outer layer of the self-assembled shell represents a layer from crosslinked polymer. The procedure of encapsulation is simple and includes single homogenization by ultrasound of the formulation that contains all ingredients…
DNA-driven self-assembly enables precise positioning of the colloidal nanoparticles owing to specific Watson-Crick interactions. Another important feature of this self-assembly method is its reversibility by controlling the temperature of the medium. In this work, we study the potential of another mechanism to control binding/unbinding process of the DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles. We employ the laser radiation that can be absorbed by the gold nanoparticles to heat their network and disassociate it. Here, we show that we can actively control the optical properties of the nanoparticle ne…
Star polymers with magnetically functionalized end groups are presented as a novel polymeric system whose morphology, self-aggregation, and orientation can easily be tuned by exposing these macromolecules simultaneously to an external magnetic field and to shear forces. Our investigations are based on a specialized simulation technique which faithfully takes into account the hydrodynamic interactions of the surrounding, Newtonian solvent. We find that the combination of magnetic field (including both strength and direction) and shear rate controls the mean number of magnetic clusters, which in…
We report on the effect of electric field on the photoluminescence, PL, from a composite consisting of a conjugated polymer mixed with zinc oxide nanoparticles. We have found that in the absence of electric field PL emission from the composite film has two maxima in the blue and green-yellow regions. Application of a voltage bias to planar gold electrodes suppresses the green-yellow emission and shifts the only PL emission maximum towards the blue region. Current-voltage characteristics of the polymer-nanoparticles composite exhibit the non-linear behavior typical of non-homogeneous polymer-in…
Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are presented for a coarse-grained bead-spring model of ring polymer brushes under compression. Flexible polymer brushes are always disordered during compression, whereas semiflexible brushes tend to be ordered under sufficiently strong compression. Besides, the polymer monomer density of semiflexible polymer brush is very high near the polymer brush surface, inducing a peak value of free energy near the polymer brush surface. Therefore, by compressing nanoparticles (NPs) in semiflexible ring brush system, NPs tend to exhibit a closely packed single layer st…
Mixtures of nanoparticles and polymer-like objects are encountered in many nanotechnological applications and biological systems. We study the behavior of grafted polymer layers decorated by nanoparticles that are attracted to the polymers using lattice gas based mean field theory and accompanying coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulations. We find that the presence of nanoparticles can induce large morphological transitions in the layer morphology. In particular, at moderate nanoparticle concentrations, the nanoparticles cause a reduction in the height of the polymer layer above the graftin…
The present communication reports the first direct measurement of the conformation of a polymer corona grafted around silica nano-particles dispersed inside a nanocomposite, a matrix of the same polymer. This measurement constitutes an experimental breakthrough based on a refined combination of chemical synthesis, which permits to match the contribution of the neutron silica signal inside the composite, and the use of complementary scattering methods SANS and SAXS to extract the grafted polymer layer form factor from the inter-particles silica structure factor. The modelization of the signal o…
We study the influence of spherical, triangular, and rod-like nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of a polymer nanocomposite (PNC), via coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on how the nanoparticle size, loading, mass, and shape influence the PNC's elastic modulus, stress at failure and resistance against cavity formation and growth, under external stress. We find that in the regime of strong polymer-nanoparticle interactions, the formation of a polymer network via temporary polymer-nanoparticle crosslinks has a predominant role on the PNC reinforcement. Spherical nano…
We present results of temperature dependent measurements of dynamics of micellar nanoparticle - polymer composites of fixed volume fraction and variable polymer chain grafting density. For nanoparticles with lower grafting density we observe dynamically arrested state at low temperatures corresponding to an attractive glass while at high temperature the same system shows relaxation typical of a repulsive glass. For higher grafting density, the low temperature dynamics resembles more of a gel which crosses over to a repulsive glass at high temperature. Possible reasons for such fascinating dyna…
Polymeric single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) are soft nano-objects synthesized by purely intramolecular cross-linking of single polymer chains. By means of computer simulations, we investigate the conformational properties of SCNPs as a function of the bending stiffness of their linear polymer precursors. We investigate a broad range of characteristic ratios from the fully flexible case to those typical of bulky synthetic polymers. Increasing stiffness hinders bonding of groups separated by short contour distances and increases looping over longer distances, leading to more compact nanoparticl…
We present a new convenient and efficient "grafting from" method to obtain well defined polystyrene (PS) silica nanoparticles. The method, based on Nitroxide-Mediated Polymerization (NMP), consists to bind covalently the alkoxyamine, which acts as initiator controller agent, at the silica nanoparticles surface in two steps. The first step is a reaction between the aminopropylsilane and the silica particles in order to functionalize the particles surface with amino group. In a second step, the initiating-controlling alkoxyamine moiety is introduced via an over grafting reaction between the amin…
When polyelectrolyte-neutral block copolymers are mixed in solutions to oppositely charged species (e.g. surfactant micelles, macromolecules, proteins etc), there is the formation of stable supermicellar aggregates combining both components. The resulting colloidal complexes exhibit a core-shell structure and the mechanism yielding to their formation is electrostatic self-assembly. In this contribution, we report on the structural properties of supermicellar aggregates made from yttrium-based inorganic nanoparticles (radius 2 nm) and polyelectrolyte-neutral block copolymers in aqueous solution…
Nature provides many paradigms for the design and fabrication of artificial composite materials. Inspired by the relationship between the well-ordered architecture and biopolymers found in natural nacre, we present a facile strategy to construct large-scale organic/inorganic nacre-mimetics with hierarchical structure via a water-evaporation self-assembly process. Through hydrogen bonding, we connect Laponite-nanoclay platelets with each other using naturally abundant cellulose creating thin, flexible films with a local brick-and-mortar architecture. While the aqueous solution displays liquid c…
The co-solvency method is a method for the size controlled preparation of nanoparticles like polymersomes, where a poor co-solvent is mixed into a homogeneous copolymer solution to trigger precipitation of the polymer. The size of the resulting particles is determined by the rate of co-solvent addition. We use the Cahn-Hilliard equation with a Flory-Huggins free energy model to describe the precipitation of a polymer under changing solvent quality by applying a time dependent Flory-Huggins interaction parameter. The analysis focuses on the characteristic size R of polymer aggregates that form …
Designable media can control properties of nanocomposite materials by spatially organizing nanoparticles. Here we theoretically study particle organization by ultrathin polymer films of grafted chains (``brushes''). Polymer-soluble nanoparticles smaller than a brush-determined threshold disperse in the film to a depth scaling inversely with particle volume. In the polymer-insoluble case, aggregation is directed: provided particles are non-wetting at the film surface, the brush stabilizes the dispersion and selects its final morphology of giant elongated aggregates with a brush-selected width.
Large scale molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) in a polymer film during solvent evaporation. As the solvent evaporates, a dense polymer-rich skin layer forms at the liquid/vapor interface, which is either NP rich or poor depending on the strength of the NP/polymer interaction. When the NPs are strongly wet by the polymer, the NPs accumulate at the interface and form layers. However when the NPs are only partially wet by the polymer, most NPs are uniformly distributed in the bulk of the polymer film with the dense skin layer serving as a barri…
The spontaneous assembly of particles in suspension provides a strategy for inexpensive fabrication of devices with nanometer-scale control, such as single-electron transistors for memory or logic applications. A scaleable and robust method to form electrodes with the required nanometer-scale spacing, however, remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate a straightforward assembly approach in which metallic colloidal spheres serve as the electrodes. The devices are formed by assembly in suspension followed by deposition onto a patterned substrate. The key to this approach is that the inter-…
