Long-lived charged massive particles (CHAMPs) appear in various particle physics models beyond the Standard Model. In this Letter, we discuss the prospects for studying the stopping and decaying events of such long-lived CHAMPs at the LHC detectors, and show that the lifetime measurement (and the study of decay products) is possible with the LHC detectors for a wide range of the lifetime O(0.1)-O(10^{10}) sec, by using periods of no $pp$ collision. Even a short lifetime of order one second can be measured by (i) identifying the stopping event with the online Event Filter, (ii) immediately making a beam-dump signal which stops the $pp$ collision of the LHC, and at the same time (iii) changing the trigger menu to optimize it for the detection of a CHAMP decay in the calorimeter. Other possibilities are also discussed.
We examine the capacity of the Large Hadron Collider to determine the mean proper lifetime of long-lived particles assuming different decay final states. We mostly concentrate on the high luminosity runs of the LHC, and therefore, develop our discussion in light of the high amount of pile-up and the various upgrades for the HL-LHC runs. We employ model-dependent and model-independent methods in order to reconstruct the proper lifetime of neutral long-lived particles decaying into displaced leptons, potentially accompanied by missing energy, as well as charged long-lived particles decaying ihnt…
The search for new physics with long-lived particles is an ongoing and thriving effort in the High Energy Physics community which necessitates new search strategies such as novel algorithms, novel detectors, etc...For these reasons, one could perhaps add another frontier, the Lifetime Frontier, to the standard three (Energy, Intensity and Cosmic). In this talk, I will describe a BSM physics model whose characteristic signatures are decays of new (mirror) fermions at displaced vertices, a domain belonging to the Lifetime Frontier. It is a model of {\em non-sterile} right-handed neutrinos whose …
We present the calculation of the stop ($\tilde{t}$) lifetime that results from its decay into gravitinos ($\tildeΨ^μ$) in the final state, namely $\tilde{t}\to \tildeΨ^μ + X$, where $X=t, bW, b lν_l$ for the two-, three- and four-body decay modes. The full calculation is obtained using the Feynman rules for massive gravitino, which is compared with the results obtained employing the equivalence theorem, where the longitudinal component of the gravitino is replaced by the goldstino. The stop turns out to be very long-lived in these scenarios, with lifetimes of $\mathcal{O}$($10^8$s, $10^{14}$s…
There has been much recent interest in long-lived massive particles at the LHC, understood as those with lifetimes between tens of micrometers and several meters. In this context we consider the possibility of long-lived electroweak singlet scalars charged under colour $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ with masses near a TeV. The shortest lifetime of interest is already longer than typical hadronisation scales. These exotic new particles would therefore appear as colour singlet bound states of the new scalars with quarks and gluons and it is their colour charge that prevents them from decaying. In particular w…
It was explored a new $SU(3)_{L} \otimes U(1)_{X}$ electroweak extension of the Standard Model, where new particles arise with peculiar signatures as heavy fractionally charged leptons and electrical neutral quarks, among others. We examine the branching fraction and the lifetime of new heavy leptons in order to discriminate if they could be identified as long-lived particle candidates. In addition, it was compared the production cross-section for these exotic leptons through a Drell-Yan process for the LHC and future hadron facilities.
Long-lived particles have become a new frontier in the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we present the implementation of four types of long-lived particle searches, viz. displaced leptons, disappearing track, displaced vertex (together with muons or with missing energy), and heavy charged tracks. These four categories cover the signatures of a large range of physics models. We illustrate their potential for exclusion and discuss their mutual overlaps in mass-lifetime space for two simple phenomenological models involving either a U(1)-charged or a coloured scala…
We show that in a confining hidden valley model where the lightest hidden particles are dark hadrons that have mass splittings larger than $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ GeV, if the lightest dark hadron is either stable or decays into Standard Model (SM) hadrons/charged leptons during the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), at least one of the heavier dark hadrons needs to decay into SM particles within $\mathcal{O}(10)$ nanosec. Once being produced at collider experiments, this heavier dark hadron is likely to decay within $\mathcal{O}(1)$ meter distance, which strengthens the motivation of searching for lon…
Terrestrial and Solar Limits on Long-Lived Particles in a Dark Sector
Supersymmetry searches at the LHC are both highly varied and highly constraining, but the vast majority are focused on cases where the final-stage visible decays are prompt. Scenarios featuring superparticles with detector-scale lifetimes have therefore remained a tantalizing possibility for sub-TeV SUSY, since explicit limits are relatively sparse. Nonetheless, the extremely low backgrounds of the few existing searches for collider-stable and displaced new particles facilitates recastings into powerful long-lived superparticle searches, even for models for which those searches are highly non-…
We investigate anomalous strong lens systems, particularly the effects of weak lensing by structures in the line of sight, in models with long-lived electrically charged massive particles (CHAMPs). In such models, matter density perturbations are suppressed through the acoustic damping and the flux ratio of lens systems are impacted, from which we can constrain the nature of CHAMPs. For this purpose, first we perform $N$-body simulations and develop a fitting formula to obtain non-linear matter power spectra in models where cold neutral dark matter and CHAMPs coexist in the early Universe. By …
We explore the physics potential of using precision timing information at the LHC in searches for long-lived particles (LLPs). In comparison with the light Standard Model particles, the decay products of massive LLPs arrive at detectors with time delays around the nanosecond scale. We propose new strategies to take advantage of this time delay feature by using initial state radiation to timestamp the collision event and require at least one LLP to decay within the detector. This search strategy is effective for a broad range of models. In addition to outlining this general approach, we demonst…
We study the prospects of searches for exotic long-lived particles with the MoEDAL detector at the LHC, assuming the integrated luminosity of 30 fb$^{-1}$ that is expected at the end of Run 3. MoEDAL incorporates nuclear track detectors deployed a few metres away from the interaction point, which are sensitive to any highly-ionizing particles. Hence MoEDAL is able to detect singly- or doubly-charged particles with low velocities $β< 0.15$ or $< 0.3$, respectively, and lifetimes larger than ${\cal O}(1) \,{\rm m}/c$. We examine the MoEDAL sensitivity to various singly-charged supersymmetric par…
I look at propagation of jets that act as a probe of the medium in the phenomenologically relevant case of a short lived dilute Quark Gluon Plasma(QGP) created during heavy ion collisions. Working in the regime where the lifetime of the medium is of the order or smaller than the formation time of the energetic jet, I derive a factorization formula with a manifest separation of scales for an illustrative jet substructure observable using the Open Quantum system Effective Field Theory(EFT) approach developed in \cite{Vaidya:2020lih}, in terms of a medium structure function and a medium induced j…
Long-lived particles (LLPs) are a common feature in many beyond the Standard Model theories, including supersymmetry, and are generically produced in exotic Higgs decays. Unfortunately, no existing or proposed search strategy will be able to observe the decay of non-hadronic electrically neutral LLPs with masses above $\sim$ GeV and lifetimes near the limit set by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), $c τ\lesssim 10^7 - 10^8$~m. We propose the MATHUSLA surface detector concept (MAssive Timing Hodoscope for Ultra Stable neutraL pArticles), which can be implemented with existing technology and in tim…
We point out that there is a parameter region in supersymmetry with heavy scalars and higgsinos, in which the heavier of bino and wino becomes long-lived as a consequence of the heavy higgsinos. In this region these electroweak gaugino sectors are secluded from each other with very small mixings that are inversely proportional to the higgsino mass. We revisit the bino and bino decays and provide simple formulae for the partial decay rates and the lifetimes in the limit of heavy higgsinos. We discuss the collider signatures of the long-lived binos and winos in this scenario.
Long-lived particles are predicted in extensions of the Standard Model that involve relatively light but very weakly interacting sectors. In this paper we consider the possibility that some of these particles are produced in atmospheric cosmic ray showers, and their decay intercepted by neutrino detectors such as IceCube or Super-Kamiokande. We present the methodology and evaluate the sensitivity of these searches in various scenarios, including extensions with heavy neutral leptons in models of massive neutrinos, models with an extra $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, and a combination of both in a $U(1)…
We calculate the early universe evolution of perturbations in the dark matter energy density in the context of simple dark sector models containing a GeV scale light mediator. We consider the case that the mediator is long lived, with lifetime up to a second, and before decaying it temporarily dominates the energy density of the universe. We show that for primordial perturbations that enter the horizon around this period, the interplay between linear growth during matter domination and collisional damping can generically lead to a sharp peak in the spectrum of dark matter density perturbation.…
The observation of long-lived particles at the LHC would reveal physics beyond the Standard Model, could account for the many open issues in our understanding of our universe, and conceivably point to a more complete theory of the fundamental interactions. Such long-lived particle signatures are fundamentally motivated and can appear in virtually every theoretical construct that address the Hierarchy Problem, Dark Matter, Neutrino Masses and the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe. We describe in this document a large detector, MATHUSLA, located on the surface above an HL-LHC $pp$ interaction poi…
The planned upgrade of the CMS detector for the High Luminosity LHC allows to find tracks in the silicon tracker for every single LHC collision and use them in the first level (hardware) trigger decision. So far, studies by CMS collaboration concentrated on the maintaining the overall trigger performance in the punishing pile up environment. We argue that the potential capabilities of the track trigger are much wider, and may offer groundbreaking opportunities for new physics searches. As an example, and to facilitate community discussion, we use a simple toy simulation to study rare Higgs dec…
