In 2008 August, the new soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 0501+4516 was discovered by Swift. The source was soon confirmed by several groups in space- and ground-based multi-wavelength observations. In this letter we report the analysis of five short bursts from the recently discovered SGR, detected with Konus-Wind gamma-ray burst spectrometer. Properties of the time histories of the observed events, as well as results of multi-channel spectral analysis, both in the 20--300 keV energy range, show, that the source exhibits itself as a typical SGR. The bursts durations are <0.75 s and their spectra above 20 keV can be fitted by optically-thin thermal bremsstrahlung (OTTB) model with kT of 20--40 keV. The spectral evolution is observed, which resembles the SGR 1627-41 bursts, where a strong hardness-intensity correlation was noticed in the earlier Konus-Wind observations. The peak energy fluxes of all five events are comparable to highest those for known SGRs, so a less distant source is implied, consistent with the determined Galactic anti-center direction. Supposing the young supernova remnant HB9 (at the distance of 1.5 kpc) as a natal environment of the source, the peak luminosities of the bursts are estimated to be (2--5)x10^{40} erg s-1. The values of the total energy release, given the same assumptions, amount to (0.6--6)x10^{39} erg. These estimations of both parameters are typical for short SGR bursts.
The knowledge of the rate of soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) giant flares is important for understanding the giant flare mechanism and the SGR energy budget in the framework of the magnetar model. We estimate the upper limit to the rate using the results of an extensive search for extragalactic soft gamma-repeater giant flares (GFs) among 140 short gamma-ray bursts detected between 1994 and 2010 by Konus-Wind using InterPlanetary Network (IPN) localizations and temporal parameters. We show that Konus-Wind and the IPN are capable of detecting GFs with energies of 2.3x10^46 erg (which is the energ…
Soft gamma repeaters (SGR) are identified as single neutron stars (NS) inside the Galaxy, or nearby galaxies, with sporadic transient gamma radiation. A total number of discovered SGR, including relative Anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXP), is few tens of objects. Many of them show periodic radiation, connected with NS rotation, with periods 2-12 s. The slow rotation is accompanied by small rate of loss of rotational energy, which is considerably smaller than the observed sporadic gamma ray luminosity, and is many orders less that the luminosity during giant bursts, observed in 4 SGR. Therefore the …
We present the catalog of Interplanetary Network (IPN) localizations for 199 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) detected by the Konus-Wind (KW) experiment between 2011 January 1 and 2021 August 31, which extends the initial sample of IPN localized KW sGRBs (arXiv:1301.3740) to 495 events. We present the most comprehensive IPN localization data on these events, including probability sky maps in HEALPix format.
Discovery of a new Soft Gamma Repeater, SGR J1833-0832
A new cellular automaton (CA) model is presented for the self-organized criticality (SOC) in recurrent bursts of soft gamma repeaters (SGRs), which are interpreted as avalanches of reconnection in the magnetosphere of neutron stars. The nodes of a regular dodecahedron and a truncated icosahedron are adopted as spherically closed grids enclosing a neutron star. It is found that the system enters the SOC state if there are sites where the expectation value of the added perturbation is nonzero. The energy distributions of SOC avalanches in CA simulations are described by a power law with a cutoff…
We have investigated the long-term evolution of individual anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) with relatively well constrained X-ray luminosity and rotational properties. In the frame of the fallback disc model, we have obtained the ranges of disc mass and dipole field strength that can produce the observed source properties. We have compared our results with those obtained earlier for dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs). Our results show that (1) the X-ray luminosity, period and period derivative of the individual AXP/SGR sources can be produced self-consistently in…
There are several phenomenological similarities between Soft Gamma Repeaters and Fast Radio Bursts, including duty factors, time scales and probable repetition. The sudden release of magnetic energy in a neutron star magnetosphere, as in popular models of SGR, can meet the energy requirements of FRB but requires both the presence of magnetospheric plasma in order that dissipation occur in a transparent region and a mechanism for releasing much of that energy quickly. FRB sources and SGR are distinguished by long-lived (up to thousands of years) current-carrying coronal arches remaining from fo…
We explore the possibility that soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) are powered by highly magnetized white dwarfs (B-WDs). We take a sample of SGRs and AXPs and provide the possible parameter space in mass, radius, and surface magnetic field based on their observed properties (period and its derivative) and the assumption that these sources obey the mass-radius relation derived for the B-WDs. The radius and magnetic field of B-WDs are adequate to explain energies in SGRs/AXPs as the rotationally powered energy. In addition, B-WDs also adequately explain the perpl…
The recent discovery of a Galactic fast radio burst (FRB) associated with a hard X-ray burst from the soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) J1935+2154 has established the magnetar origin of at least some FRBs. In this work, we study the statistical properties of soft gamma-/hard X-ray bursts from SGRs 1806--20 and J1935+2154 and of radio bursts from the repeating FRB 121102. For SGRs, we show that the probability density functions for the differences of fluences, fluxes, and durations at different times have fat tails with a $q$-Gaussian form. The $q$ values in the $q$-Gaussian distributions are appro…
We exploited the high sensitivity of the INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI instrument to study the persistent hard X-ray emission of the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14, based on ~11.6 Ms of archival data. The 22-150 keV INTEGRAL spectrum can be well fit by a power law with photon index 1.9 +/- 0.3 and flux F_x = (1.11 +/- 0.17)E-11 erg/cm^2/s (20-100 keV). A comparison with the 20-100 keV flux measured in 1997 with BeppoSAX, and possibly associated with SGR 1900+14, shows a luminosity decrease by a factor of ~5. The slope of the power law above 20 keV is consistent within the uncertainties with that of…
We show that the soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) can be explained as recently proposed highly magnetized white dwarfs (B-WDs). The radius and magnetic field of B-WDs are perfectly adequate to explain energies in SGRs/AXPs as the rotationally powered energy. While the highly magnetized neutron stars require an extra, observationally not well established yet, source of energy, the magnetized white dwarfs, yet following Chandrasekhar's theory (C-WDs), exhibit large ultra-violet luminosity which is observationally constrained from a strict upper limit.
We present the results from the analysis of the broad-band X-ray spectra of 5 Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft $γ$-ray Repeaters (SGRs). We fit their Suzaku and INTEGRAL spectra with models appropriate for the X-ray emission from the accretion flow onto a pulsar. We find that their X-ray spectra can be well described with this model. In particular we find that: (a) the radius of the accretion column is $\sim150-350$ m resulting in a transverse optical depth of $\sim 1$; (b) the vertical Thompson optical depth is $\approx 50-400$, and (c) their luminosity translates in accretion rates $\…
Since its initial discovery, the Fast radio burst (FRB) FRB 121102 has been found to be repeating with millisecond-duration pulses. Very recently, 15 new bursts were detected by the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) during its continous monitoring observations. In this letter, we show that the burst energy distribution has a power law form which is very similar to the Gutenberg-Richter law of earthquakes. In addition, the waiting time of the burst has a Gaussian distribution, which is also a distinctive feature of earthquakes. These findings suggest that the repeating FRB pulses may originate from th…
Long-term spectral and timing properties of the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1833-0832 and detection of extended X-ray emission around the radio pulsar PSR B1830-08
The soft gamma-ray repeater candidate SGR 0755$-$2933 was discovered in 2016 by Swift/BAT, which detected a short ($\sim$30 ms) powerful burst typical of magnetars. To understand the nature of the source, we present here an analysis of follow-up observations of the tentative soft X-ray counterpart of the source obtained with Swift/XRT, NuSTAR and Chandra. From our analysis we conclude that, based on the observed counterpart position and properties, it is actually not a soft gamma ray repeater but rather a new high mass X-ray binary. We suggest to refer to it as 2SXPS J075542.5$-$293353. We con…
The statistical properties of the soft gamma repeater SGR J1550--5418 are investigated carefully. We find that the cumulative distributions of fluence, peak flux and duration can be well fitted by a bent power law, while the cumulative distribution of waiting time follows a simple power law. In particular, the probability density functions of fluctuations of fluence, peak flux, and duration have a sharp peak and fat tails, which can be well fitted by a $q$-Gaussian function. The $q$ values keep approximately steady for different scale intervals, indicating a scale-invariant structure of soft g…
We study the statistical properties of the soft gamma repeater SGR 1935+2154. We find that the cumulative distributions of duration, waiting time, fluence and flux can be well fitted by bent power law. In addition, the probability density functions of fluctuations of duration, waiting time, fluence and flux well follow the Tsallis $q$-Gaussian distribution. The $q$ values keep steady for different temporal scale intervals, indicating a scale-invariant structure of the bursts. Those features are very similar to the property of the repeating fast radio burst FRB 121102, indicating the underlying…
Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are bursts of $γ$-rays generated from relativistic jets launched from catastrophic events such as massive star core collapse or binary compact star coalescence. Previous studies suggested that GRB emission is erratic, with no noticeable memory in the central engine. Here we report a discovery that similar light curve patterns exist within individual bursts for at least some GRBs. Applying the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) method, we show that similarity of light curve patterns between pulses of a single burst or between the light curves of a GRB and its X-ray flare can be …
Magnetars are highly magnetized neutron stars that are characterized by recurrent emission of short-duration bursts in soft gamma-rays/hard X-rays. Recently, FRB 200428 were found to be associated with an X-ray burst from a Galactic magnetar. Two fast radio bursts (FRBs) show mysterious periodic activity. However, whether magnetar X-ray bursts are periodic phenomena is unclear. In this paper, we investigate the period of SGR 1806-20 activity. More than 3000 short bursts observed by different telescopes are collected, including the observation of RXTE, HETE-2, ICE and Konus. We consider the obs…
There are insufficient catastrophic events (collapse, explosion or merger of stars or compact objects) to explain the cosmologically local rate of apparently non-repeating FRB if each such catastrophic event produces a single FRB. Unless produced by some novel and unsuspected but comparatively frequent event, apparently non-repeating FRB must actually repeat many times in the lifetimes of their sources. Yet no such infrequent repetitions (in contrast to the frequent activity of FRB known to repeat) have been observed, constraining their repetition rates and active lifetimes. The absence of mor…
We have analyzed the long-term evolution and the X-ray outburst light curve of SGR 0501+4516 in the frame of the fallback disc model. We have shown that the X-ray luminosity, period and period derivative of this typical soft gamma repeater can be achieved by a neutron star with a large range of initial disc masses provided that the source has a magnetic dipole field of ~ 1.4 x 10^{12} G on the pole of the star. At present, the star is accreting matter from the disc, which has an age ~ 3 x 10^4 yr, and will remain in the accretion phase until t ~ 2 - 5 x 10^5 yr depending on the initial disc ma…
Fast radio bursts (FRB) are enigmatic powerful single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a numbe…
The Broad-band Noise Characteristics of Selected Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters
We report on the bright burst detected by four Interplanetary network (IPN) spacecraft on 2015 April 12. The IPN localization of the source is consistent with the position of the recently discovered soft gamma-repeater SGR 1935+2154. From the Konus-Wind (KW) observation, we derive temporal and spectral parameters of the emission, and the burst energetics. The rather long duration of the burst ($\sim$1.7 s) and the large measured energy fluence ($\sim2.5\times10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$) put it in the class of rare "intermediate" SGR flares, and this is the first one observed from SGR 1935+2154. A s…
A close high-mass binary system consisting of a neutron star (NS) and a massive OB supergiant companion is expected to lead to a TZO structure, which consists of a NS core and a stellar envelope. We use the scenario machine program to calculate the formation tracks of TZOs in close high mass NS binaries and their subsequent evolution. We propose and demonstrate that the explosion and instant contraction of a TZO structure leave its stellar remnant as a soft gamma ray repeater and an anomalous X-ray pulsar respectively.
We analyzed temporal and spectral properties, focusing on the short bursts, for three anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs), including SGR 1806-20, 1E 1048-5937 and SGR 0501+4516. Using the data from XMM-Newton, we located the short bursts by Bayesian blocks algorithm. The short bursts' duration distributions for three sources were fitted by two lognormal functions. The spectra of shorter bursts ($< 0.2~\rm s$) and longer bursts ($\geq 0.2~\rm s$) can be well fitted in two blackbody components model or optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung model for SGR 0501+4516. We a…
