The phase-field crystal model is by now widely used in order to predict crystal nucleation and growth. For colloidal solidification with completely overdamped individual particle motion, we show that the phase-field crystal dynamics can be derived from the microscopic Smoluchowski equation via dynamical density functional theory. The different underlying approximations are discussed. In particular, a variant of the phase-field crystal model is proposed which involves less approximations than the standard phase-field crystal model. We finally test the validity of these phase-field crystal models against dynamical density functional theory. In particular, the velocities of a linear crystal front from the undercooled melt are compared as a function of the undercooling for a two-dimensional colloidal suspension of parallel dipoles. Good agreement is only obtained by a drastic scaling of the free energies in the phase-field crystal model in order to match the bulk freezing transition point.
Complex fluids exhibit a variety of exotic flow behaviours under high stresses, such as shear thickening and shear jamming. Rheology is a powerful tool to characterise these flow behaviours over the bulk of the fluid. However, this technique is limited in its ability to probe fluid behaviour in a spatially resolved way. Here, we utilise high-speed imaging and the free-surface geometry in drop impact to study the flow of colloidal suspensions. We report, for the first time, observations of coexisting solid and liquid phases due to shear jamming caused by impact. In addition to observing Newtoni…
We provide a detailed derivation of the mode-coupling equations for a colloidal liquid confined by two parallel smooth walls. We introduce irreducible memory kernels for the different relaxation channels thereby extending the projection operator technique to colloidal liquids in slit geometry. Investigating both the collective dynamics as well as the tagged-particle motion, we prove that the mode-coupling functional assumes the same form as in the Newtonian case corroborating the universality of the glass-transition singularity with respect to the microscopic dynamics.

We study low-salt, binary aqueous suspensions of charged colloidal spheres of size ratio Phi = 0.57, number densities below the eutectic number density n_E, and number fractions of p = 1.00-0.40. The typical phase obtained by solidification from a homogeneous shear-melt is a substitutional alloy of body centred cubic structure. In strictly gas-tight vials, the polycrystalline solid is stable against melting and further phase transformation for extended times. For comparison, we prepare the same samples also by slow and mechanically undisturbed deionization in commercial slit cells. These cells…
In the last 50 years, equilibrium density functional theory (DFT) has been proven to be a powerful, versatile and predictive approach for the statics and structure of classical particles. This theory can be extended to the nonequilibrium dynamics of completely overdamped Brownian colloidal particles towards so-called dynamical density functional theory (DDFT). The success of DDFT makes it a promising candidate for a first-principle description of active matter. In this lecture, we shall first recapitulate classical DDFT for passive colloidal particles typically described by Smoluchowski equati…
Microswimmers typically operate in complex environments. In biological systems, often diverse species are simultaneously present and interact with each other. Here, we derive a (time-dependent) particle-scale statistical description, namely a dynamical density functional theory, for such multi-species systems, extending existing works on one-component microswimmer suspensions. In particular, our theory incorporates the effect of external potentials, but also steric and hydrodynamic interactions between swimmers. For the latter, a previously introduced force-dipole-based minimal (pusher or pull…
