We report on Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-Wave Astronomy (CARMA) and James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) observations toward the Einstein source 1E 1740.7-2942, a LMXB commonly known as the "Great Annihilator." The Great Annihilator is known to be near a small, bright molecular cloud on the sky in a region largely devoid of emission in 12-CO surveys of the Galactic Center. The region is of interest because it is interior to the dust lanes which may be the shock zones where atomic gas from HI nuclear disk is converted into molecular gas. We find that the region is populated with a number of dense (n ~ 10^5 cm^-3) regions of excited gas with small filling factors, and estimate that up to 1-3 x 10^5 solar masses of gas can be seen in our maps. The detection suggests that a significant amount of mass is transported from the shock zones to the GC star-forming regions in the form of small, dense bundles.
The central parsec of the Galaxy contains a young star cluster embedded in a complex interstellar medium. The latter mainly consists of a torus of dense clumps and streams of molecular gas (the circumnuclear disk, CND) enclosing streamers of ionized gas (the Minispiral). In this complex environment, knowledge of the local extinction that locally affects each feature is crucial to properly study and disentangle them. We previously studied molecular gas in this region and inferred an extinction map from two H2 lines. Extinction appears to be correlated with the dereddened flux in several contigu…
We present ALMA observations of 30 Doradus -- the highest resolution view of molecular gas in an extragalactic star formation region to date (~0.4pc x 0.6pc). The 30Dor-10 cloud north of R136 was mapped in 12CO 2-1, 13CO 2-1, C18O 2-1, 1.3mm continuum, the H30alpha recombination line, and two H2CO 3-2 transitions. Most 12CO emission is associated with small filaments and clumps (<1pc, ~1000 Msun at the current resolution). Some clumps are associated with protostars, including "pillars of creation" photoablated by intense radiation from R136. Emission from molecular clouds is often analyzed by …
The physical and chemical properties of cold and dense molecular clouds are key to understanding how stars form. Using the IRAM 30 m and NRO 45 m telescopes, we carried out a Multiwavelength line-Imaging survey of the 70 $μ$m dark and bright clOuds (MIAO). At a linear resolution of 0.1--0.5 pc, this work presents a detailed study of parsec-scale CO depletion and $\rm HCO^+$ deuterium (D-) fractionation toward four sources (G11.38+0.81, G15.22-0.43, G14.49-0.13, and G34.74-0.12) included in our full sample. In each source with $\rm T<20$ K and $n_{\rm H}\rm\sim10^4$--$\rm 10^5 cm^{-3}$, we comp…
We present measurements of the surface density of star formation, the star-forming clump luminosity function, and the clump size distribution function, for the lensed galaxy SGAS J111020.0+645950.8 at a redshift of z=2.481. The physical size scales that we probe, radii r=30--50 pc, are considerably smaller scales than have yet been studied at these redshifts. The star formation surface density we find within these small clumps is consistent with surface densities measured previously for other lensed galaxies at similar redshift. Twenty-two percent of the rest-frame ultraviolet light in this le…
We report the second complete molecular line data release from the {\em Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars} (CHaMP), a large-scale, unbiased, uniform mapping survey at sub-parsec resolution, of mm-wave line emission from 303 massive, dense molecular clumps in the Milky Way. This release is for all $^{12}$CO $J$=1$\rightarrow$0 emission associated with the dense gas, the first from Phase II of the survey, which includes $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O. The observed clump emission traced by both $^{12}$CO and HCO$^+$ (from Phase I) shows very similar morphology, indicating that, for …
We perform a suite of 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations of photoevaporation of molecular gas clumps illuminated by external massive stars. We study the fate of solar-mass clumps and derive their lifetimes with varying the gas metallicity over a range of $10^{-3} \,Z_\odot \leq Z \leq Z_\odot $. Our simulations incorporate radiation transfer of far ultraviolet (FUV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photons, and follow atomic/molecular line cooling and dust-gas collisional cooling. Nonequilibrium chemistry is coupled with the radiative transfer and hydrodynamics in a self-consistent manner. We…
We introduce a new set of zoom-in cosmological simulations with sub-pc resolution, intended to model extremely faint, highly magnified star-forming stellar clumps, detected at z=6.14 thanks to gravitational lensing. The simulations include feedback from individual massive stars (in both the pre-supernova and supernova phases), generated via stochastic, direct sampling of the stellar initial mass function. We adopt a modified 'delayed cooling' feedback scheme, specifically created to prevent artificial radiative loss of the energy injected by individual stars in very dense gas (n~10^3-10^5 cm^{…
We simulate an equal-mass merger of two Milky Way-size galaxy discs with moderate gas fractions at parsec-scale resolution including a new model for radiative cooling and heating in a multi-phase medium, as well as star formation and feedback from supernovae. The two discs initially have a $2.6\times10^6\mathrm{~M_{\odot}}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH) embedded in their centers. As the merger completes and the two galactic cores merge, the SMBHs form a a pair with a separation of a few hundred pc that gradually decays. Due to the stochastic nature of the system immediately following the merg…

One of the main mechanisms that could drive mass outflows on parsec scales in AGN is thermal driving. The same X-rays that ionize and heat the plasma are also expected to make it thermally unstable. Indeed, it has been proposed that the observed clumpiness in AGN winds is caused by thermal instability (TI). While many studies employing time-dependent numerical simulations of AGN outflows have included the necessary physics for TI, none have so far managed to produce clumpiness. Here we present the first such clumpy wind simulations in 1-D and 2-D, obtained by simulating parsec scale outflows i…
We present the ALMA survey of CO(2-1) emission from the 1/5 solar metallicity, Local Group dwarf galaxy NGC 6822. We achieve high (0.9 arcsec ~ 2 pc) spatial resolution while covering large area: four 250 pc x 250 pc regions that encompass ~2/3 of NGC 6822's star formation. In these regions, we resolve ~150 compact CO clumps that have small radii (~2-3 pc), narrow line width (~1 km/s), and low filling factor across the galaxy. This is consistent with other recent studies of low metallicity galaxies, but here shown with a 15 times larger sample. At parsec scales, CO emission correlates with 8 m…
We study the connection between the large-scale dynamics and the gas fueling toward a central black hole via the analysis of a Milky Way-like simulation at sub-parsec resolution. This allows us to follow a set of processes at various scales (e.g., the triggering of inward gas motion towards inner resonances via the large-scale bar, the connection to the central black hole via mini spirals) in a self-consistent manner. This simulation provides further insights on the role of shear for the inhibition of star formation within the bar in regions with significant amount of gas. We also witness the …
Massive stars ($M > 8$ \msun) typically form in parsec-scale molecular clumps that collapse and fragment, leading to the birth of a cluster of stellar objects. We investigate the role of magnetic fields in this process through dust polarization at 870 $μ$m obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The SMA observations reveal polarization at scales of $\lsim$ 0.1 pc. The polarization pattern in these objects ranges from ordered hour-glass configurations to more chaotic distributions. By comparing the SMA data with the single dish data at parsec scales, we found that magnetic fields at dense …
We analyze the gas and dust emission in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole Sgr~A* at the Galactic center (GC) with the ESO VLT (Paranal/Chile) instruments SINFONI and VISIR. The SINFONI H+K data cubes show several emission lines with related line map counterparts. From these lines, the Br$γ$ emission is the most prominent one and appears to be shaped as a bar extending along the North-South direction. With VISIR, we find a dusty counterpart to this filamentary emission. In this work, we present evidence that this feature can be most likely connected to the mini-spiral and po…
We report the results of a high spatial (parsec) resolution HCO+ (J = 1-0) and HCN (J = 1-0) emission survey toward the giant molecular clouds of the star formation regions N105, N113, N159, and N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The HCO+ and HCN observations at 89.2 and 88.6 GHz, respectively, were conducted in the compact configuration of the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The emission is imaged into individual clumps with masses between 10^2 and 10^4 solar masses and radii of <1 pc to ~2 pc. Many of the clumps are coincident with indicators of current massive star formation, indicating …
A Circumnuclear Disk (CND) of molecular gas occupies the central few parsecs of the Galactic Center. It is likely subject to turbulent disruptions from violent events in its surrounding environment, but the effect of such perturbations has not yet been investigated in detail. Here we perform 3D, N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations with an adapted general turbulence driving method to investigate the CND's structural evolution, in particular its reaction to varied scales of injected turbulence. We find that, because of shear flow in the disk, transient arcs of gas (streams) n…
Radio jets can play multiple roles in the feedback loop by regulating the accretion of the gas, by enhancing gas turbulence, and by driving gas outflows. Numerical simulations are beginning to make detailed predictions about these processes. Using high resolution VLBI observations we test these predictions by studying how radio jets of different power and in different phases of evolution affect the properties and kinematics of the surrounding HI gas. Consistent with predictions, we find that young (or recently restarted) radio jets have stronger impact as shown by the presence of HI outflows. …
We present an analysis of the relationship between the orientation of magnetic fields and filaments that form in 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of cluster-forming, turbulent molecular cloud clumps. We examine simulated cloud clumps with size scales of L ~ 2-4 pc and densities of n ~ 400-1000 cm^-3 with Alfven Mach numbers near unity. We simulated two cloud clumps of different masses, one in virial equilibrium, the other strongly gravitationally bound, but with the same initial turbulent velocity field and similar mass-to-flux ratio. We apply various techniques to analyze the filamentary an…
We present parsec scale interferometric maps of HCN(1-0) and HCO$^{+}$(1-0) emission from dense gas in the star-forming region 30 Doradus, obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. This extreme star-forming region, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), is characterized by a very intense ultraviolet ionizing radiation field and sub-solar metallicity, both of which are expected to impact molecular cloud structure. We detect 13 bright, dense clumps within the 30 Doradus-10 giant molecular cloud. Some of the clumps are aligned along a filamentary structure with a characteristic …
OB star clusters originate from parsec-scale massive molecular clumps. We aim to understand the evolution of temperature and density structures on the intermediate-scale ($\lesssim$0.1-1 pc) extended gas of massive clumps. We performed $\sim$0.1 pc resolution observations (SMA+APEX) of multiple molecular line tracers (e.g., CH$_{3}$CCH, H$_{2}$CS, CH$_{3}$CN, CH$_{3}$OH) which cover a wide range of excitation conditions, towards a sample of eight massive clumps. Based on various radiative transfer models, we constrain the gas temperature and density structures and establish an evolutionary pic…
Metals are thought to have profound effects on the internal structures of molecular clouds in which stars are born. The absence of metals is expected to prevent gas from efficient cooling and fragmentation in theory. However, this effect has not yet been observed at low metallicity environments, such as in the early Universe and local dwarf galaxies, because of the lack of high spatial resolution maps of gas. We carried out ALMA observations of the carbon monoxide (CO) J=2-1 emission line at 1.4-parsec resolutions of a molecular cloud in DDO 70 at 7% solar metallicity, the most metal-poor gala…
Radiative feedback can influence subsequent star formation. We quantify the heating from OB stars in the local star-forming regions in the JCMT Gould Belt survey. Dust temperatures are calculated from 450/850 micron flux ratios from SCUBA-2 observations at the JCMT assuming a fixed dust opacity spectral index $β=1.8$. Mean dust temperatures are calculated for each submillimetre clump along with projected distances from the main OB star in the region. Temperature vs. distance is fit with a simple model of dust heating by the OB star radiation plus the interstellar radiation field and dust cooli…
We present multi-scale and multi-wavelength data of the Galactic HII region G25.4-0.14 (hereafter G25.4NW, distance ~5.7 kpc). The SHARC-II 350 micron continuum map displays a hub-filament configuration containing five parsec scale filaments and a central compact hub. Through the 5 GHz radio continuum map, four ionized clumps (i.e., Ia-Id) are identified toward the central hub, and are powered by massive OB-stars. The Herschel temperature map depicts the warm dust emission (i.e., Td ~23-39 K) toward the hub. High resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm continuum m…
The cold molecular gas in contemporary galaxies is structured in discrete cloud complexes. These giant molecular clouds (GMCs), with $10^4$-$10^7$ solar masses and radii of 5-100 parsecs, are the seeds of star formation. Highlighting the molecular gas structure at such small scales in distant galaxies is observationally challenging. Only a handful of molecular clouds were reported in two extreme submillimetre galaxies at high redshift. Here we search for GMCs in a typical Milky Way progenitor at z = 1.036. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we mapped the CO(4-3) emi…
The Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (CHaMP) is the first large-scale, unbiased, uniform mapping survey at sub-parsec scale resolution of 90 GHz line emission from massive molecular clumps in the Milky Way. We present the first Mopra (ATNF) maps of the CHaMP survey region (300°>l>280°) in the HCO+ J=1-0 line, which is usually thought to trace gas at densities up to 10^11 m-3. In this paper we introduce the survey and its strategy, describe the observational and data reduction procedures, and give a complete catalogue of moment maps of the HCO+ J=1-0 emission from the ensemble of 301 …
The formation of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) is an unavoidable outcome of galaxy evolution via successive mergers. However, the mechanism that drives their orbital evolution from parsec separations down to the gravitational wave (GW) dominated regime is poorly understood, and their final fate is still unclear. If such binaries are embedded in gas-rich and turbulent environments, as observed in remnants of galaxy mergers, the interaction with gas clumps (such as molecular clouds) may efficiently drive their orbital evolution. Using numerical simulations, we test this hypothesis by study…
In this work we investigate the interplay between gravity and turbulence at different spatial scales and in different density regimes. We analyze a sample of 70 $μ$m quiet clumps that are divided into three surface density bins and we compare the dynamics of each group with the dynamics of their respective filaments. The densest clumps form within the densest filaments on average, and they have the highest value of the velocity dispersion. The kinetic energy is transferred from the filaments down to the clumps most likely through a turbulent cascade, but we identify a critical value of the sur…

Stars form predominantly in clusters inside dense clumps of molecular clouds that are both turbulent and magnetized. The typical size and mass of the cluster-forming clumps are $\sim 1$ pc and $\sim 10^2 - $ 10$^3$ M$_\odot$, respectively. Here, we discuss some recent progress on numerical simulations of clustered star formation in such parsec-scale dense clumps with emphasis on the role of magnetic fields. The simulations have shown that magnetic fields tend to slow down global gravitational collapse and thus star formation, especially in the presence of protostellar outflow feedback. Even a …
We report new, $\sim$1000 AU spatial resolution observations of 225 GHz dust continuum emission towards the OB cluster-forming molecular clump G33.92+0.11. On parsec scales, this molecular clump presents a morphology with several arm-like dense gas structures surrounding the two central massive ($\gtrsim$100 $M_{\odot}$) cores. From the new, higher resolution observations, we identified 28 localized, spatially compact dust continuum emission sources, which may be candidates of young stellar objects. Only one of them is not embedded within known arm-like (or elongated) dense gas structures. The…
We present hydrodynamic simulations of the evolution of self-gravitating dense gas on scales of 1 kiloparsec down to < parsec in a galactic disk, designed to study dense clump formation from giant molecular clouds (GMCs). These structures are expected to be the precursors to star clusters and this process may be the rate limiting step controling star formation rates in galactic systems as described by the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. We follow the thermal evolution of the gas down to ~5K using extinction-dependent heating and cooling functions. We do not yet include magnetic fields or localized…
Sufficiently massive clumps of molecular gas collapse under self-gravity and fragment to spawn a cluster of stars that have a range of masses. We investigate observationally the early stages of formation of a stellar cluster in a massive filamentary infrared dark cloud, G28.34+0.06 P1, in the 1.3mm continuum and spectral line emission using the ALMA. Sensitive continuum data reveal further fragmentation in five dusty cores at a resolution of several 10^3 AU. Spectral line emission from C18O, CH3OH, 13CS, H2CO and N2D+ are detected for the first time toward these dense cores. We found that thre…
(Abridged) The Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (CHaMP) is the first large-scale (280 degree<l<300 degree, -4 degree<b<2 degree), unbiased, sub-parsec resolution survey of Galactic molecular clumps and their embedded stars. Barnes et al. (2011) presented the source catalog of ~300 clumps based on HCO+(1-0) emission, used to estimate masses M. Here we use archival mid-infrared to mm continuum data to construct spectral energy distributions. Fitting two-temperature grey-body models, we derive bolometric luminosities, L. We find the clumps have 10Lsun<L<1E6.5Lsun and 0.1<L/M<1E3, consis…
We estimate the mass of the intermediate-mass black hole at the heart of the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 404 using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the molecular interstellar medium at an unprecedented linear resolution of ~0.5 pc, in combination with existing stellar kinematic information. These ALMA observations reveal a central disc/torus of molecular gas clearly rotating around the black hole. This disc is surrounded by a morphologically and kinematically complex flocculent distribution of molecular clouds, that we resolve in detail. Continuum emission is…
The MHD version of the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code, MG, has been employed to study the interaction of thermal instability, magnetic fields and gravity through 3D simulations of the formation of collapsing cold clumps on the scale of a few parsecs, inside a larger molecular cloud. The diffuse atomic initial condition consists of a stationary, thermally unstable, spherical cloud in pressure equilibrium with lower density surroundings and threaded by a uniform magnetic field. This cloud was seeded with 10% density perturbations at the finest initial grid level around n=1.1 cm^{-3} and evo…
We present synthetic Hi and CO observations of a simulation of decaying turbulence in the thermally bistable neutral medium. We first present the simulation, with clouds initially consisting of clustered clumps. Self-gravity causes these clump clusters to form more homogeneous dense clouds. We apply a simple radiative transfer algorithm, and defining every cell with <Av> > 1 as molecular. We then produce maps of Hi, CO-free molecular gas, and CO, and investigate the following aspects: i) The spatial distribution of the warm, cold, and molecular gas, finding the well-known layered structure, wi…
Massive outflows of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) have been observed in absorption in a number of radio galaxies and are considered a signature of AGN feedback. These outflows on kpc-scales have not been investigated in great detail as they require high-angular resolution observations to be spatially resolved. In some radio AGN, they are likely the result of the radio jets interacting with the interstellar medium. We have used a global VLBI array to map the HI outflow in a small sample of young and restarted radio galaxies which we previously observed with the VLA and the WSRT at lower resoluti…
High-resolution ($<$0.1pc) ALMA observations of the 30Dor-10 molecular cloud 15pc north of R136 are presented. The $^{12}$CO 2-1 emission morphology contains clumps near the locations of known mid-infrared massive protostars, as well as a series of parsec-long filaments oriented almost directly towards R136. There is elevated kinetic energy (linewidths at a given size scale) in 30Dor-10 compared to other LMC and Galactic star formation regions, consistent with large scale energy injection to the region. Analysis of the cloud substructures is performed by segmenting emission into disjoint appro…
The accretion rates needed to fuel the central black hole in a galaxy can be achieved via viscous torques in thick disks and rings, which can be resolved by millimetre interferometry within the inner ~20pc of the active galaxy NGC1068 at comparable scales and sensitivity to single dish observations of the Circumnuclear Disk (CND) in the Galactic Center. To interpret observations of these regions and determine the physical properties of their gas distribution, we present a modelling effort that includes (i) a simple dynamical simulations involving partially inelastic collisions between disk gas…
We present the first VLBI detection of HCN molecular absorption in the nearby active galactic nucleus NGC 1052. Utilizing the 1 milliarcsecond resolution achieved by the Korean VLBI Network, we have spatially resolved the HCN absorption against a double-sided nuclear jet structure. Two velocity features of HCN absorption are detected significantly at the radial velocity of 1656 and 1719 km/s, redshifted by 149 and 212 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The column density of the HCN molecule is estimated to be 10^{15}-10^{16} cm^{-2}, assuming the excitation temperature o…
We report serendipitous detections of line emission with ALMA in band 3, 6, and 7 in the central parsec of the Galactic center at an up to now highest resolution (<0.7''). Among the highlights are the very first and highly resolved images of sub-mm molecular emission of CS, H13CO+, HC3N, SiO, SO, C2H, and CH3OH in the immediate vicinity (~1'' in projection) of Sgr A* and in the circumnuclear disk (CND). The central association (CA) of molecular clouds shows three times higher CS/X (X: any other observed molecule) luminosity ratios than the CND suggesting a combination of higher excitation - by…
The aims of this work are to provide accurate photometry in multiple near-infrared broadband filters, to determine the power-law index of the extinction-law toward the central parsec of the Galaxy, to provide measurements of the absolute extinction toward the Galactic center, and finally to measure the spatial variability of extinction on arcsecond scales. We use adaptive optics observations of the central parsec of the Milky Way. Absolute values for the extinction in the H, Ks, and L'-bands as well as of the power-law indices of the H to Ks and Ks to L' extinction-laws are measured based on th…
The IRDC SDC335.579-0.292 (SDC335) is a massive star-forming cloud found to be globally collapsing towards one of the most massive star forming cores in the Galaxy. SDC335 hosts three high-mass protostellar objects at early stages of their evolution and archival ALMA Cycle 0 data indicate the presence of at least one molecular outflow in the region. Observations of molecular outflows from massive protostellar objects allow us to estimate the accretion rates of the protostars as well as to assess the disruptive impact that stars have on their natal clouds. The aim of this work is to identify an…
Understanding the inner structure of the clumpy molecular torus surrounding the active galactic nucleus is essential in revealing the forming mechanism. However, spatially resolving the torus is difficult because of its size of a few parsecs. Thus, to probe the clump conditions in the torus, we performed the velocity decomposition of the CO rovibrational absorption lines ($Δ{v}=0\to 1,\ Δ{J}=\pm 1$) at $λ\sim 4.67\,\mathrm{μ{m}}$ observed toward an ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 08572+3915 NW with the high-resolution spectroscopy ($R\sim 10{,}000$) of Subaru Telescope. Consequently, we fou…
We present J' and K' imaging linear polarimetric adaptive optics observations of NGC 1068 using MMT-Pol on the 6.5-m MMT. These observations allow us to study the torus from a magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) framework. In a 0.5" (30 pc) aperture at K', we find that polarisation arising from the passage of radiation from the inner edge of the torus through magnetically aligned dust grains in the clumps is the dominant polarisation mechanism, with an intrinsic polarisation of 7.0%$\pm$2.2%. This result yields a torus magnetic field strength in the range of 4$-$82 mG through paramagnetic alignment, a…
Context. Understanding the conditions in which stars and stellar clusters form is of great importance. In particular the role that stellar feedback may have is still hampered by large uncertainties. Aims. We investigate the role played by ionising radiation and protostellar outflows during the formation and evolution of a stellar cluster. To self-consistently take into account gas accretion, we start with clumps of tens of parsecs in size. Methods. Using an adaptive mesh refinement code, we run magneto-hydrodynamical numerical simulations aiming at describing the collapse of massive clumps wit…
In the multi-scale view of the star formation process the material flows from large molecular clouds down to clumps and cores. In this paradigm it is still unclear if it is gravity or turbulence that drives the observed supersonic non-thermal motions during the collapse, in particular in high-mass regions, and at which scales gravity becomes eventually dominant over the turbulence of the interstellar medium. To investigate this problem we have combined the dynamics of a sample of 70 micron-quiet clumps, selected to cover a wide range of masses and surface densities, with the dynamics of the pa…
