In modern terahertz (THz) sensing and imaging spectroscopy, water is considered a nemesis to be avoided due to strong absorption in the THz frequency range. Here we report the first experimental demonstration and theoretical implications of using femtosecond laser pulses to generate intense broadband THz emission from water vapor. When we focused an intense laser pulse in water vapor contained in a gas cell or injected from a gas jet nozzle, an extraordinarily strong THz field from optically excited water vapor is observed. Water vapor has more than 50% greater THz generation efficiency than dry nitrogen. It had previously been assumed that the nonlinear generation of THz waves in this manner primarily involves a free-electron plasma, but we show that the molecular structure plays an essential role in the process. In particular, we found that THz wave generation from H2O vapor is significantly stronger than that from D2O vapor. Vibronic activities of water cluster ions, occurring naturally in water vapor, may possibly contribute to the observed isotope effect along with rovibrational contributions from the predominant monomers.

We report on the nonlinear spectroscopy of water vapor at THz frequencies. Atmospheric water vapor has a rich spectrum with several strong resonances at frequencies below 3 THz, falling within the range of operation of most existing THz sources. We observe an extremely large nonlinear response to THz radiation at the positions of these resonances. Using the optical Kerr model for the nonlinear response, we estimate a minimum nonlinear refractive index of the order of 10^2 m^2/W. Our results provide insight into the energy levels of the water molecule and give a more accurate picture of its res…
We experimentally show the spectrally averaged nonlinear refractive index and absorption coefficient for liquid water, water vapor, α-pinene, and Si using a full-phase analysis in the terahertz regime through a standard time-domain spectrometer. Our results confirm that the nonlinear index of refraction of the liquid samples in this regime exceeds the near-infrared optical nonlinear index by six orders of magnitude. In the case of liquid water and water vapor at atmospheric pressure, we find a nonlinear index of 7.8x10^-10 cm^2/W and 6x10^-11 cm^2/W respectively, which are both much larger tha…
Arising from modulation instability, Turing rolls in optical Kerr microresonators have been used in the generation of optical frequency combs and the synthesis of microwave and terahertz frequencies. In this work, by applying electro-optic modulation on terahertz-frequency Turing rolls, we implement electro-optic frequency division with a microcomb to synthesize variable low-noise microwave signals. We also actively stabilize the terahertz oscillations to a microwave reference via intracavity power modulation, obtaining fractional frequency instabilities that are better than those of the free-…
Realization of practical terahertz wireless communications still faces many challenges. The receiver with high sensitivity is important for THz wireless communications. Here we demonstrate a terahertz receiver based on the cesium Rydberg atoms in a room-temperature vapor cell. The minimum detectable THz electric field is calibrated. With this receiver, the phase-sensitive conversion of amplitude-modulated or frequency-modulated terahertz waves into optical signals is performed. The results show that the atomic receiver has many advantages due to its quantum properties. Especially, the long dis…
Coherent phonon-polaritons have attracted a considerable amount of interest owing to their relevance to nonlinear optics and terahertz (THz)-wave emissions. Therefore, it is important to analyze the THz electric-fields of phonon-polaritons. However, in the majority of previous measurements, only a single component of the THz electric field was detected. In this paper, we demonstrate that pump-probe electro-optical imaging measurements using the Stokes parameters of probe polarization enable the phase-resolved selective detection of THz electric-field components that are associated with the pho…
By using two mutually phase-locked optical frequency combs with slightly different repetition rates, we demonstrate asynchronous optical-sampling terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (ASOPS THz-TDS) without using any trigger signals or optical delay lines. Due to a tight stabilization of the repetition frequencies, it was possible to accumulate the data over 48 minutes in a triggerless manner without signal degradation. The fractional frequency stability of the measured terahertz signal is evaluated to be $\sim$8.0$\times$10$^{- 17}$ after 730 s. The frequency accuracy of the obtained terahertz …
In the last three decades or so, we have witnessed an extraordinary progress in the research and technology of carbon-based nanomaterials. Among the peculiar highlights are the discoveries of fullerene, the carbon nanotubes and the magnificent simple scotch tape exfoliated graphene. The unique photophysical properties of these different allotropic forms of the nanocarbon have opened up vast application possibilities in many fields of science and technology, with particular emphasis on optoelectronics and photonics. A prerequisite for many of these applications is a thorough understanding of th…
Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) is a phenomenon of exceptional light transmission through a metallic film with hole arrays enhanced by surface plasmon (SP) resonance, which stimulates renewed research hotspots in metamaterials, subwavelength optics, and plasmonics. Below the frequency of the first order SP mode, f_pl0, the metallic film typically shows strong reflection and no EOT. Here, we report an unusual EOT phenomenon below fpl0, i.e., beyond the long-held spectral boundary of classic EOTs. It is induced by a novel bound surface state in a Fabry-Perot(F-P) cavity comprising a hol…
The unique optoelectronic properties of single layer graphene (SLG) are ideal for the development of photonic devices across a broad range of frequencies, from X-rays to microwaves. In the terahertz (THz) range (0.1-10 THz frequency) this has led to the development of optical modulators, non-linear sources, and photodetectors, with state-of-the-art performances. A key challenge is the integration of SLG-based active elements with pre-existing technological platforms in a scalable way, while maintaining performance level unperturbed. Here, we report on the development of room temperature THz de…

Extraordinarily transmitting arrays are promising candidates for quasi-optical (QO) components due to their high frequency selectivity and beam scanning capabilities owing to the leaky-wave mechanism involved. We show here how by breaking certain unit cell and lattice symmetries, one can achieve a rich family of transmission resonances associated with the leaky-wave dispersion along the surface of the array. By combining 2-D and 1-D periodic method of moments (MoM) calculations with QO terahertz (THz) time-domain measurements, we provide physical insights, numerical, and experimental demonstra…
