Galaxy evolution reveals itself not only through the evolving properties of galaxies themselves but also through its impact on the surrounding environment. The intergalactic medium in particular holds a fossil record of past galaxy activity, imprinted on its thermodynamic and chemical properties. This is most easily discerned in small galaxy groups, where the gravitational heating of this gas renders it observable by X-ray telescopes while still leaving its properties highly susceptible to the effects of galactic feedback. X-ray observations of the hot gas in groups can therefore provide a view of galactic feedback history that can complement dedicated studies of AGN and star formation activity at low and high redshift. Based on high-quality X-ray data of a sample of nearby groups, we present initial results of such a study and discuss some implications for the AGN and star formation histories of the group members.
Recent studies suggest that the quenching properties of galaxies are correlated over several mega-parsecs. The large-scale "galactic conformity" phenomenon around central galaxies has been regarded as a potential signature of "galaxy assembly bias" or "pre-heating", both of which interpret conformity as a result of direct environmental effects acting on galaxy formation. Building on the iHOD halo quenching framework developed in Zu & Mandelbaum (2015, 2016), we discover that our fiducial halo mass quenching model, without any galaxy assembly bias, can successfully explain the overall environme…
Galaxies that are several virial radii beyond groups/clusters show preferentially quiescent star formation rates. Using a galaxy group/cluster catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, together with a cosmological N-body simulation, we examine the origin of this environmental quenching beyond the virial radius. Accounting for the clustering of groups/clusters, we show that central galaxies show enhanced SFR quenching out to 2.5 virial radii beyond groups/clusters, and we demonstrate that this extended environmental enhancement can be explained simply by 'ejected' satellite galaxies that orbit…
We present a variation of the recently updated Munich semi-analytical galaxy formation model, L-Galaxies, with a new gas stripping method. Extending earlier work, we directly measure the local environmental properties of galaxies to formulate a more accurate treatment of ram-pressure stripping for all galaxies. We fully re-calibrate the modified L-Galaxies model using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method with the stellar mass function and quenched fraction of galaxies at $0\leq z\leq2$ as constraints. Due to this re-calibration, global galaxy population relations, including the stellar mas…
SubHalo Abundance Matching (SHAM) assumes that one (sub)halo property, such as mass Mvir or peak circular velocity Vpeak, determines properties of the galaxy hosted in each (sub)halo such as its luminosity or stellar mass. This assumption implies that the dependence of Galaxy Luminosity Functions (GLFs) and the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function (GSMF) on environmental density is determined by the corresponding halo density dependence. In this paper, we test this by determining from an SDSS sample the observed dependence with environmental density of the ugriz GLFs and GSMF for all galaxies, and for…

We present a multiwavelength study of galaxies around D4UD01, a spectroscopically confirmed protocluster at z = 3.24 to investigate environmental trends. 450 galaxies are selected based on Ks band detection with photometric redshifts (photo-z) at 3.0 < z < 3.4, among which ~ 12% are classified as quiescent galaxies. The quiescent galaxies are among the most massive and reddest ones in the entire sample. We identify a large photo-z galaxy overdensity in the field, which lies close to the previously spectroscopically confirmed sources of the protocluster. We find that the quiescent galaxies are …
From the Main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6), we construct two volume-limited samples above and below the value of M, to explore the difference of the environmental dependence of galaxy properties between galaxies above and below the value of M . We measure the local three-dimensional galaxy density in a comoving sphere with a radius of the distance to the 5th nearest galaxy for each galaxy, and compare basic properties of galaxies in the lowest density regime with those of galaxies in the densest regime. It is found that the galaxy luminosity strongly …
We present results on the environmental dependence of the star-forming galaxy main sequence in 11 galaxy cluster fields at $1.0 < z < 1.5$ from the Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early Environments Survey (GOGREEN) survey. We use a homogeneously selected sample of field and cluster galaxies whose membership is derived from dynamical analysis. Using [OII]-derived star formation rates (SFRs), we find that cluster galaxies have suppressed SFRs at fixed stellar mass in comparison to their field counterparts by a factor of 1.4 $\pm$ 0.1 ($\sim3.3σ$) across the stellar mass range: $9.0 < \l…
We study the galaxy alignment in the sample of very rich Abell clusters located in and outside superclusters. The statistically significant difference among investigated samples exists. We found that in contrast to whole sample of cluster, where alignment increase with the cluster richness, the cluster belonging to the superclusters does not show this effect. Moreover, the alignment decreased with the supercluster richness. One should note however that orientations of galaxies in analyzed clusters are not random, both in the case when we analyzed whole sample of the clusters and only clusters …
We report on the environmental dependence of galaxy properties at z=2.15. We construct multi-band photometric data sets in the (proto-)cluster PKS1138-26 field and in the GOODS field. We then fit spectral energy distributions of the galaxies with model templates generated with the latest stellar population synthesis code and derive physical properties of galaxies from the fits. To quantify the environmental dependence of galaxy properties, a special care is taken of systematic errors -- we use data sets that have almost the same wavelength samplings, use the same code to fit SEDs with the same…
We explore properties of close galaxy pairs and merging systems selected from the SDSS-DR4 in different environments with the aim to assess the relative importance of the role of interactions over global environmental processes. For this purpose, we perform a comparative study of galaxies with and without close companions as a function of local density and host-halo mass, carefully removing sources of possible biases. We find that at low and high local density environments, colours and morphologies of close galaxy pairs are very similar to those of isolated galaxies. At intermediate densities,…
We study the quenching of star formation as a function of redshift, environment and stellar mass in the galaxy formation simulations of Henriques et al. (2015), which implement an updated version of the Munich semi-analytic model (L-GALAXIES) on the two Millennium Simulations after scaling to a Planck cosmology. In this model massive galaxies are quenched by AGN feedback depending on both black hole and hot gas mass, and hence indirectly on stellar mass. In addition, satellite galaxies of any mass can be quenched by ram-pressure or tidal stripping of gas and through the suppression of gaseous …
To understand the role of the environment in galaxy formation, evolution, and present-day properties, it is essential to study the multi-frequency behavior of different galaxy populations under various environmental conditions. We crossmatch the SDSS DR10 group catalog with GAMA Data Release 2 and Wide-field Survey Explorer (WISE) data to construct a catalog of 1651 groups and 11436 galaxies containing photometric information in 15 different wavebands ranging from ultraviolet (0.152 μm) to mid-infrared (22 μm). We perform the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of galaxies using the MAG…

The quenching of star formation in satellite galaxies is observed over a wide range of dark matter halo masses and galaxy environments. In the recent Guo et al (2011) and Fu et al (2013) semi-analytic + N-body models, the gaseous environment of the satellite galaxy is governed by the properties of the dark matter subhalo in which it resides. This quantity depends of the resolution of the N-body simulation, leading to a divergent fraction of quenched satellites in high- and low-resolution simulations. Here, we incorporate an analytic model to trace the subhaloes below the resolution limit. We d…
This work presents the results from our near-infrared spectroscopy of narrow-band selected H$α$ emitters (HAEs) in two rich over-densities (PKS 1138-262 at $z=2.2$ and USS 1558-003 at $z=2.5$) with the Multi-Object Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) on the Subaru telescope. These protoclusters are promising candidates for the most massive class of galaxy clusters seen today (Paper I). The confirmed HAEs in the protoclusters at $z>2$ show high excitation levels as characterized by much higher [OIII]/H$β$ or [OIII]/H$α$ line ratios than those of general galaxies at low-$z$. Such a high ex…
Within the standard model of hierarchical galaxy formation in a ΛCDM Universe, the environment of galaxies is expected to play a key role in driving galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we investigate whether and how the gas metallicity and the star formation surface density (Σ_SFR) depend on galaxy environment. To this end we analyse a sample of 1162 local, star-forming galaxies from the galaxy survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA). Generally, both parameters do not show any significant dependence on environment. However, in agreement with previous studies, we find that low-m…
We use the Zurich ENvironmental Study (ZENS) database to investigate the environmental dependence of the merger fraction $Γ$ and merging galaxy properties in a sample of ~1300 group galaxies with $M>10^{9.2}M_\odot$ and 0.05<z<0.0585. In all galaxy mass bins investigated in our study, we find that $Γ$ decreases by a factor of ~2-3 in groups with halo masses $M_{HALO}>10^{13.5} M_\odot$ relative to less massive systems, indicating a suppression of merger activity in large potential wells. In the fiducial case of relaxed groups only, we measure a variation $ΔΓ/Δ\log (M_{HALO}) \sim - 0.07$ dex$^…
We investigate the dependence of galaxy structure on a variety of galactic and environmental parameters for ~500,000 galaxies at z<0.2, taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7 (SDSS-DR7). We utilise bulge-to-total stellar mass ratio, (B/T)_*, as the primary indicator of galactic structure, which circumvents issues of morphological dependence on waveband. We rank galaxy and environmental parameters in terms of how predictive they are of galaxy structure, using an artificial neural network approach. We find that distance from the star forming main sequence (Delta_SFR), followed by…
We make use of four galaxy catalogs based on four different semi-analytical models (SAMs) implemented in the Millennium simulation to study the environmental effects and the model dependence of galaxy merger rate. We begin the analyses by finding that galaxy merger rate in the SAMs has mild redshift evolution, consistent with results of previous works. To study the environmental dependence of galaxy merger rate, we adopt two estimators, the local overdensity (1+δn) defined as the surface density from the nth-nearest-neighbor (n = 6 is chosen in this study) and the host halo mass Mh. We find th…
In this work we present the results of a novel approach devoted to disentangle the role of the environmental processes affecting galaxies in clusters. This is based on the analysis of the NUV-r' distributions of a large sample of star-forming galaxies in clusters spanning more than four absolute magnitudes. The galaxies inhabit three distinct environmental regions: virial regions, cluster infall regions and field environment. We have applied rigorous statistical tests in order to analyze both, the complete NUV-r' distributions and their averages for three different bins of r'-band galaxy lumin…
We present structural measurements for the galaxies in the 0.05<z<0.0585 groups of the Zurich Environmental Study, aimed at establishing how galaxy properties depend on four environmental parameters: group halo mass M_GROUP, group-centric distance R/R_200, ranking into central or satellite, and large-scale structure density delta_LSS. Global galaxy structure is quantified both parametrically and non-parametrically. We correct all these measurements for observational biases due to PSF blurring and surface brightness effects as a function of galaxy size, magnitude, steepness of light profile and…
We present an analysis of the environmental dependence of bars and bulges in disc galaxies, using a volume-limited catalogue of 15810 galaxies at z<0.06 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with visual morphologies from the Galaxy Zoo 2 project. We find that the likelihood of having a bar, or bulge, in disc galaxies increases when the galaxies have redder (optical) colours and larger stellar masses, and observe a transition in the bar and bulge likelihoods, such that massive disc galaxies are more likely to host bars and bulges. We use galaxy clustering methods to demonstrate statistically signif…
We study the environmental dependence of local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. The LIRG and ULIRG samples are constructed by cross-correlating spectroscopic catalogs of galaxies of the SDSS Data Release 7 and the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Faint Source Catalog. We examine the effects of the large-scale background density (Sigma_5), galaxy clusters, and the nearest neighbor galaxy on the properties of infrared galaxies (IRGs). We find that the fraction of LIRGs plus ULIRGs among IRGs (f_(U)LI…
Recent results are presented on the metal enrichment of low-mass star-forming (SF) galaxies in local Universe clusters. The environmental effects on the chemical evolution of these galaxies are discussed. We have used spectroscopic data from the SDSSIII-DR8 and we have derived the gas-phase O/H and N/O abundances. We have then examined the Mass-Metallicity Relation (MZR) of this sample of cluster galaxies, and we have found well defined sequences. A flattening of the slope of these sequences has been observed for galaxies located in the core of the two more massive clusters of the sample, sugg…
In this paper, we present a sample of cluster galaxies devoted to study the environmental influence on the star-formation activity. This sample of galaxies inhabits in clusters showing a rich variety in their characteristics and have been observed by the SDSS-DR6 down to M_B ~ -18 and by the GALEX AIS throughout sky regions corresponding to several megaparsecs. We assign the broad-band and emission-line fluxes from ultraviolet to far-infrared to each galaxy performing an accurate spectral energy distribution for spectral fitting analysis. The clusters follow the general X-ray luminosity vs. ve…
In this study, I investigate the environmental dependence of galaxy colors in the CMASS sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 9 (SDSS DR9). To decrease the radial selection effect, I divide the CMASS sample into subsamples with a redshift binning size of 0.01 and analyze the environmental dependence of the u-r, u-g, g-r, r-i and i-z colors for these subsamples in each redshift bin. Statistical analysis shows that all the five colors weakly correlate with the local environment, which may mean that the environmental processes responsible for a galaxy's properties proceed slowly ove…
We compare state-of-the-art semi-analytic models of galaxy formation as well as advanced sub-halo abundance matching models with a large sample of early-type galaxies from SDSS at z < 0.3. We focus our attention on the dependence of median sizes of central galaxies on host halo mass. The data do not show any difference in the structural properties of early-type galaxies with environment, at fixed stellar mass. All hierarchical models considered in this work instead tend to predict a moderate to strong environmental dependence, with the median size increasing by a factor of about 1.5-3 when mov…
Galaxy clusters are widely used to constrain cosmological parameters through their properties, such as masses, luminosity and temperature distributions. One should take into account all kind of biases that could affect these analyses in order to obtain reliable constraints. In this work, we study the difference in the properties of clusters residing in different large scale environments, defined by their position within or outside of voids, and the density of their surrounding space. We use both observational and simulation cluster and void catalogues, i.e. XCS and redMaPPer clusters, BOSS voi…
We examine the orientations of galaxies in 43 rich Abell galaxy clusters belonging to superclusters and containing at least 100 members in the considered area as a function of supercluster multiplicity. It is found that the orientation of galaxies in the analyzed clusters is not random and the alignment decreases with supercluster richness, although the effect is statistically significant only for azimuthal angles. The dependence of galaxy alignment on cluster location inside or outside a supercluster and on supercluster multiplicity clearly shows the importance of environmental effects on the…
We present uniform CFHT Megacam g and r photometry for 34 X-ray selected galaxy clusters drawn from the X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) Large Scale Structure (LSS) survey and the Canadian Cluster Comparison Project (CCCP). The clusters possess well determined X-ray temperatures spanning the range 1<kT(keV)<12. In addition, the clusters occupy a relatively narrow redshift interval (0.15<z<0.41) in order to minimize any redshift dependent photometric effects. We investigate the colour bimodality of the cluster galaxy populations and compute blue fractions using criteria derived from Butcher and Oemler …
The dependence of the luminosity function of cluster galaxies on the evolutionary state of the parent cluster is still an open issue, in particular as concern the formation/evolution of the brightest cluster galaxies. We plan to study the bright part of the LFs of a sample of very unrelaxed clusters ("DARC" clusters showing evidence of major, recent mergers) and compare them to a reference sample of relaxed clusters spanning a comparable mass and redshift range. Our analysis is based on the SDSS DR7 photometric data of ten, massive, and X-ray luminous clusters (0.2<z<0.3), always considering p…
We present an analysis of V-band radial surface brightness profiles for spiral galaxies from the field and cluster environments using Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging and data from the Space Telescope A901/2 Galaxy Evolution Survey (STAGES). We use a large sample of ~330 face-on to intermediately inclined spiral galaxies and assess the effect of the galaxy environment on the azimuthally averaged radial surface brightness mu profiles for each galaxy in the outer stellar disc (24 < mu < 26.5 mag per sq arcsec). For galaxies with a purely exponential outer disc (~50 per …
We reinvestigate the dramatic rise in the S0 fraction, f_S0, within clusters since z ~ 0.5. In particular, we focus on the role of the global galaxy environment on f_S0 by compiling, either from our own observations or the literature, robust line-of-sight velocity dispersions, sigma's, for a sample of galaxy groups and clusters at 0.1 < z < 0.8 that have uniformly determined, published morphological fractions. We find that the trend of f_S0 with redshift is twice as strong for sigma < 750 km/s groups/poor clusters than for higher-sigma, rich clusters. From this result, we infer that over this …
We review recent results on the dependence of various galaxy properties on environment at low redshift. As environmental indicators, we use group mass, group-centric radius, and the distinction between centrals and satellites; examined galaxy properties include star formation rate, colour, AGN fraction, age, metallicity and concentration. In general, satellite galaxies diverge more markedly from their central counterparts if they reside in more massive haloes. We show that these results are consistent with starvation being the main environmental effect, if one takes into account that satellite…
The Zurich Environmental Study (ZENS) is based on a sample of ~1500 galaxy members of 141 groups in the mass range ~10^12.5-14.5 M_sun within the narrow redshift range 0.05<z<0.0585. ZENS adopts novel approaches, here described, to quantify four different galactic environments, namely: (1) the mass of the host group halo; (2) the projected halo-centric distance; (3) the rank of galaxies as central or satellites within their group halos; and (4) the filamentary large-scale structure (LSS) density. No self-consistent identification of a central galaxy is found in ~40% of <10^13.5 M_sun groups, f…
The stellar mass and metallicity are among the fundamental parameters of galaxies. An understanding of the interplay between those properties as well as their environmental dependence will give us a general picture of the physics and feedback processes ongoing in groups of galaxies. We study the relationships and environmental dependencies between the stellar mass, and gas metallicity for more than 1900 galaxies in groups up to redshift 0.35 using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Using a control sample of more than 28,000 star-forming field galaxies, we find evidence for a decrement…
