We present an efficient algorithm for generating unitary maps on a $d$-dimensional Hilbert space from a time-dependent Hamiltonian through a combination of stochastic searches and geometric construction. The protocol is based on the eigen-decomposition of the map. A unitary matrix can be implemented by sequentially mapping each eigenvector to a fiducial state, imprinting the eigenphase on that state, and mapping it back to the eigenvector. This requires the design of only $d$ state-to-state maps generated by control waveforms that are efficiently found by a gradient search with computational resources that scale polynomially in $d$. In contrast, the complexity of a stochastic search for a single waveform that simultaneously acts as desired on all eigenvectors scales exponentially in $d$. We extend this construction to design maps on an $n$-dimensional subspace of the Hilbert space using only $n$ stochastic searches. Additionally, we show how these techniques can be used to control atomic spins in the ground electronic hyperfine manifold of alkali atoms in order to implement general qudit logic gates as well to perform a simple form of error correction on an embedded qubit.
Werner states are defined as bipartite qudit states that remain unchanged under application of arbitrary unitary operators acting on both subsystems simultaneously. Their preparation is a crucial ingredient in entanglement distillation protocols. This thesis deals with an iterative approach to prepare Werner states asymptotically, using random unitary operations. The asymptotic dynamics of random unitary operations are linked to algebraic properties of the involved unitary operators applying results about general quantum operations. Then a family of random unitary operations is constructed, wh…
Theoretical Quantum Information Processing (QIP) has matured from the use of qubits to the use of qudits (systems having states> 2). Where as most of the experimental implementations have been performed using qubits, little experimental work has been carried out using qudits as yet. In this paper we demonstrate experimental realization of a qutrit system by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), utilizing deuterium (spin-1) nuclei partially oriented in liquid crystalline phase. Preparation of pseudopure states and implementation of unitary operations are demonstrated in this single-qutrit system, u…
State preparation is a process encoding the classical data into the quantum systems. Based on quantum phase estimation, we propose the specific quantum circuits for a deterministic state preparation algorithm and a probabilistic state preparation algorithm. To discuss the gate complexity in these algorithms, we decompose the diagonal unitary operators included in the phase estimation algorithms into the basic gates. Thus, we associate the state preparation problem with the decomposition problem of the diagonal unitary operators. We analyse the fidelities in the two algorithms and discuss the s…
A key task in quantum computation is the application of a sequence of gates implementing a specific unitary operation. However, the decomposition of an arbitrary unitary operation into simpler quantum gates is a nontrivial problem. Here we propose a general and robust protocol to decompose any target unitary into a sequence of Pauli rotations. The procedure involves identifying a commuting subset of Pauli operators having a high trace overlap with the target unitary, followed by a numerical optimization of their corresponding rotation angles. The protocol is demonstrated by decomposing several…
We perform optimal-control-theory calculations to determine the minimum number of two-qubit CNOT gates needed to perform quantum state preparation and unitary operator synthesis for few-qubit systems. By considering all possible gate configurations, we determine the maximum achievable fidelity as a function of quantum circuit size. This information allows us to identify the minimum circuit size needed for a specific target operation and enumerate the different gate configurations that allow a perfect implementation of the operation. We find that there are a large number of configurations that …
We describe a protocol capable of preparing an arbitrary state of two photons in several spatial modes using pairs of photons generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion, linear optical elements and single-photon detectors or post-selection. The protocol involves unitary and non-unitary transformations realizable by beam splitters and phase shifters. Non-unitary transformations are implemented by attenuation filters. The protocol contains several optimization capabilities with the goal of improving overall probability of its success. We also show how entangled two-photon states require…
What resources are universal for quantum computation? In the standard model, a quantum computer consists of a sequence of unitary gates acting coherently on the qubits making up the computer. This paper shows that a very different model involving only projective measurements, quantum memory, and the ability to prepare the |0> state is also universal for quantum computation. In particular, no coherent unitary dynamics are involved in the computation.
We propose a dissipative scheme to prepare a three-dimensional entangled state for two atoms trapped in separate coupled cavities. Our work shows that both atomic spontaneous emission and cavity decay, which are two typical obstacles in unitary-dynamics-based schemes, could be utilized as resources for high-dimensional entangled state preparation without specifying initial state and controlling time precisely. Final numerical simulation with one group of experimental parameters indicates that the performance of our scheme is better than the unitary-dynamics-based scheme.
Non-unitary operations generated by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian can be used to create quantum state manipulations which are impossible in Hermitian quantum mechanics. These operations include state preparation (or cooling) and non-orthogonal state discrimination. In this work we put a lower bound on the resources needed for the construction of some given non-unitary evolution. Passive systems are studied in detail and a general feature of such a system is derived. After interpreting our results using the singular value decomposition, several examples are studied analytically. In par…
This paper reconsiders the method of adaptive measurement for qubit state preparation developed by Jacobs and shows an alternative scheme that works even under unknown unitary evolution of the state. The key idea is that the measurement is adaptively changed so that one of the eigenstates of the measured observable is always set between the current and the target states at while that eigenstate converges to the target. The most significant feature of this scheme is that the measurement strength can be taken constant unlike Jacobs' one, which eventually provides fine robustness property of the …
The Quantum State Preparation problem aims to prepare an $n$-qubit quantum state $|ψ_v\rangle =\sum_{k=0}^{2^n-1}v_k|k\rangle$ from the initial state $|0\rangle^{\otimes n}$, for a given unit vector $v=(v_0,v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_{2^n-1})^T\in \mathbb{C}^{2^n}$ with $\|v\|_2 = 1$. The problem is of fundamental importance in quantum algorithm design, Hamiltonian simulation and quantum machine learning, yet its circuit depth and size complexity remain open when ancillary qubits are available. In this paper, we study efficient constructions of quantum circuits with $m$ ancillary qubits that can prepare…
In this paper, I take a step toward answering the following question: for m different small circuits that compute m orthogonal n qubit states, is there a small circuit that will map m computational basis states to these m states without any input leaving any auxiliary bits changed. While this may seem simple, the constraint that auxiliary bits always be returned to 0 on any input (even ones besides the m we care about) led me to use sophisticated techniques. I give an approximation of such a unitary in the m = 2 case that has size polynomial in the approximation error, and the number of qubits…
Many-body ground states can be prepared via unitary evolution in cold atomic systems. Given the initial state and a fixed time for the evolution, how close can we get to a desired ground state if we can tune the Hamiltonian in time? Here we study this optimal control problem focusing on Luttinger liquids with tunable interactions. We show that the optimal protocol can be obtained by simulated annealing. We find that the optimal interaction strength of the Luttinger liquid can have a nonmonotonic time dependence. Moreover, the system exhibits a marked transition when the ratio $τ/L$ of the prep…
Universal compilation is a training process that compiles a trainable unitary into a target unitary and it serves vast potential applications from quantum dynamic simulations to optimal circuits with deep-compressing, device benchmarking, quantum error mitigation, and so on. Here, we propose a universal compilation-based variational algorithm for the preparation and tomography of quantum states in low-depth quantum circuits. We apply the Fubini-Study distance to be a trainable cost function under various gradient-based optimizers, including the quantum natural gradient approach. We evaluate th…
We propose various protocols for joint remotely prepare a four-dimensional quantum state by using two- and three-particle four-dimensional entangled state as the quantum channel. The single- and two-particle generalized projective measurement and the appropriate unitary operation are needed in our protocols. It is shown that the receiver can reconstruct the unknown original state only if two senders collaborate with each other.
Realizing non-unitary transformations on unitary-gate based quantum devices is critically important for simulating a variety of physical problems including open quantum systems and subnormalized quantum states. We present a dilation based algorithm to simulate non-unitary operations using probabilistic quantum computing with only one ancilla qubit. We utilize the singular-value decomposition (SVD) to decompose any general quantum operator into a product of two unitary operators and a diagonal non-unitary operator, which we show can be implemented by a diagonal unitary operator in a 1-qubit dil…
Many quantum state preparation methods rely on a combination of dissipative quantum state initialization, followed by unitary evolution to a desired target state. Here we demonstrate the usefulness of quantum measurement as an additional tool for quantum state preparation. Starting from a pure separable multipartite state, a control sequence, which includes rotation, spin squeezing via one-axis twisting, quantum measurement and post-selection, generates a highly entangled multipartite state, which we refer to as Projected Squeezed states (or PS states). Through an optimization method, we then …

We approach the long-standing problem of preparing an out-of-equilibrium many-body Chern insulator (CI) and associated bulk-boundary correspondence unitarily. Herein, this is addressed by constructing a dynamical many-body Chern invariant exploiting the property of the bulk macroscopic electric polarisation (Resta polarisation) of the CI. This Chern invariant defined from observable correlations is also established to topologically classify many body Chern states in equilibrium. The non-equilibrium behavior of the invariant is probed by ramping the paradigmatic Haldane model of graphene from i…

We develop a scheme to prepare a desired state or subspace in high-dimensional Hilbert-spaces using repeated applications of a single static projection operator onto the desired target and fixed unitary dynamics. Benchmarks against other control schemes, performed on generic Hamiltonians and on Bose-Hubbard systems, establish the competitiveness of the method. As a concrete application of the control of mesoscopic atomic samples in optical lattices we demonstrate the near deterministic preparation of Schrödinger cat states of all atoms residing on either the odd or the even sites.
Quantum statistics is defined by Hilbert space products between the eigenstates associated with state preparation and measurement. The same Hilbert space products also describe the dynamics generated by a Hamiltonian when one of the states is an eigenstate of energy E and the other represents an observable B. In this paper, we investigate this relation between the observable time evolution of quantum systems and the coherence of Hilbert space products in detail. It is shown that the times of arrival for a specific value of B observed with states that have finite energy uncertainties can be use…
We present an approach of constructing invariants under local unitary transformations for multipartite quantum systems. The invariants constructed in this way can be complement to that in [Science 340 (2013) 1205-1208]. Detailed examples are given to compute such invariant in detail. It is shown that these invariants can be used to detect the local unitary equivalence of degenerated quantum states.
Under suitable assumptions, the algorithms in [Lin, Tong, Quantum 2020] can estimate the ground state energy and prepare the ground state of a quantum Hamiltonian with near-optimal query complexities. However, this is based on a block encoding input model of the Hamiltonian, whose implementation is known to require a large resource overhead. We develop a tool called quantum eigenvalue transformation of unitary matrices with real polynomials (QET-U), which uses a controlled Hamiltonian evolution as the input model, a single ancilla qubit and no multi-qubit control operations, and is thus suitab…

Analogous to the notion of mutually unbiased bases for Hilbert spaces, we consider mutually unbiased unitary bases (MUUB) for the space of operators, $M(d, \mathbb{C})$, acting on such Hilbert spaces. The notion of MUUB reflects the equiprobable guesses of unitary in one bases of $M(d, \mathbb{C})$ when estimating a unitary operator in another. Though, for prime dimension $d$, the maximal number of MUUBs is known to be $d^{2}-1$, there is no known recipe for constructing them, assuming they exist. However, one can always construct a minimum of three MUUBs, and the maximal number is approached …
We examine the adiabatic preparation of crystalline phases of Rydberg excitations in a one-dimensional lattice gas by frequency sweep of the excitation laser, as proposed by Pohl et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 043002 (2010)] and recently realized experimentally by Schauß et al. [Science 347, 1455 (2015)]. We find that the preparation of crystals of a few Rydberg excitations in a unitary system of several tens of atoms requires exceedingly long times for the adiabatic following of the ground state of the system Hamiltonian. Using quantum stochastic (Monte-Carlo) wavefunction simulations, we show…
Deterministic classical dynamical systems have an ergodic hierarchy, from ergodic through mixing, to Bernoulli systems that are "as random as a coin-toss". Dual-unitary circuits have been recently introduced as solvable models of many-body nonintegrable quantum chaotic systems having a hierarchy of ergodic properties. We extend this to include the apex of a putative quantum ergodic hierarchy which is Bernoulli, in the sense that correlations of single and two-particle observables vanish at space-time separated points. We derive a condition based on the entangling power $e_p(U)$ of the basic tw…
The Hamiltonian operator plays a central role in quantum theory being a generator of unitary quantum dynamics. Its expectation value describes the energy of a quantum system. Typically being a non-unitary operator, the action of the Hamiltonian is either encoded using complex ancilla-based circuits, or implemented effectively as a sum of Pauli string terms. Here, we show how to approximate the Hamiltonian operator as a sum of propagators using a differential representation. The proposed approach, named Hamiltonian operator approximation (HOA), is designed to benefit analog quantum simulators, …
