We present the properties of the discrete X-ray sources detected in our monitoring program of the globular cluster (GC) rich elliptical galaxy, NGC 4278, observed with Chandra ACIS-S in six separate pointings, resulting in a co-added exposure of 458-ks. From this deep observation, 236 sources have been detected within the region overlapped by all observations, 180 of which lie within the D25 ellipse of the galaxy. These 236 sources range in Lx from 3.5E36 erg/s (with 3sigma upper limit <1E37 erg/s) to ~2E40 erg/s, including the central nuclear source which has been classified as a LINER. From optical data, 39 X-ray sources have been determined to be coincident with a globular cluster, these sources tend to have high X-ray luminosity, with ten of these sources exhibiting Lx>1E38 erg/s. From X-ray source photometry, it has been determined that the majority of the 236 point sources that have well constrained colors, have values that are consistent with typical LMXB spectra, with 29 of these sources expected to be background objects from the logN-logS relation. There are 103 sources in this population that exhibit long-term variability, indicating that they are accreting compact objects. 3 of these sources have been identified as transient candidates, with a further 3 possible transients. Spectral variations have also been identified in the majority of the source population, where a diverse range of variability has been identified, indicating that there are many different source classes located within this galaxy.
We present initial results from a new 440-ks Chandra HETG GTO observation of the canonical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The proximity of NGC 1068, together with Chandra's superb spatial and spectral resolution, allow an unprecedented view of its nucleus and circumnuclear NLR. We perform the first spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the `ionization cone' in any AGN, and use the sensitive line diagnostics offered by the HETG to measure the ionization state, density, and temperature at discrete points along the ionized NLR. We argue that the NLR takes the form of outflowing pho…

We present the results of a 100 ks {\it Chandra} observation of the NGC 404 nuclear region. The long exposure and excellent spatial resolution of {\it Chandra} has enabled us to critically examine the nuclear environment of NGC 404, which is known to host a nuclear star cluster and potentially an intermediate-mass black hole (on the order of a few times $10^5$ \Msun). We find two distinct X-ray sources: a hard, central point source coincident with the optical and radio centers of the galaxy, and a soft extended region that is coincident with areas of high H$α$ emission and likely recent star f…
We present Chandra ACIS-I and ACIS-S observations ($\sim$200 ks in total) of the X-ray luminous elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, located in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster. A soft band (0.5-2 keV) image shows the presence of a bright core in the center surrounded by an extended X-ray corona and two pronounced quasi-symmetric, 8 kpc long, arm-like features. Each of this features defines the rimof an ellipsoidal bubble. An additional bubble-like feature, whose northern rim is located $\sim2$ kpc south of the north-eastern arm, is detected as well. We present surface brightness and temperature prof…
We present the source catalog of a new Chandra ACIS-I observation of NGC 300 obtained as part of the Chandra Local Volume Survey. Our 63 ks exposure covers ~88% of the D25 isophote (R~6.3 kpc) and yields a catalog of 95 X-ray point sources detected at high significance to a limiting unabsorbed 0.35-8 keV luminosity of ~10^36 erg s^-1. Sources were cross-correlated with a previous XMM-Newton catalog, and we find 75 "X-ray transient candidate" sources that were detected by one observatory, but not the other. We derive an X-ray scale length of 1.7+/-0.2 kpc and a recent star formation rate of 0.1…
We present results from a study of the Supernova Remnant (SNR) population in a sample of six nearby galaxies (NGC 2403, NGC 3077, NGC 4214, NGC 4449, NGC 4395 and NGC 5204) based on Chandra archival data. We have detected 244 discrete X-ray sources down to a limiting flux of 10^{-15} erg/s. We identify 37 X-ray selected thermal SNRs based on their X-ray colors or spectra, 30 of which are new discoveries. In many cases the X-ray classification is confirmed based on counterparts with SNRs identified in other wavelengths. Three of the galaxies in our sample (NGC 4214, NGC 4395 and NGC 5204) are s…
We report the detection of a weak X-ray point source coincident with the nucleus of the bulgeless disk galaxy NGC 3621, recently discovered by Spitzer to display high ionization mid-infrared lines typically associated with AGN. These Chandra observations provide confirmation for the presence of an AGN in this galaxy, adding to the growing evidence that black holes do form and grow in isolated bulgeless disk galaxies. Although the low signal-to-noise ratio of the X-ray spectrum prevents us from carrying out a detailed spectral analysis of the nuclear source, the X-ray results, combined with the…
Chandra X-ray observations of NGC4342, a low stellar mass (M_K=-22.79 mag) early-type galaxy, show luminous, diffuse X-ray emission originating from hot gas with temperature of kT~0.6 keV. The observed 0.5-2 keV band luminosity of the diffuse X-ray emission within the D_25 ellipse is L_0.5-2keV = 2.7 x 10^39 erg/s. The hot gas has a significantly broader distribution than the stellar light, and shows strong hydrodynamic disturbances with a sharp surface brightness edge to the northeast and a trailing tail. We identify the edge as a cold front and conclude that the distorted morphology of the h…
We present the result of the Chandra high-resolution observation of the Seyfert~2 galaxy NGC 7590. This object was reported to show no X-ray absorption in the low-spatial resolution ASCA data. The XMM observations show that the X-ray emission of NGC 7590 is dominated by an off-nuclear ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) and an extended emission from the host galaxy, and the nucleus is rather weak, likely hosting a Compton-thick AGN. Our recent Chandra observation of NGC 7590 enables to remove the X-ray contamination from the ULX and the extended component effectively. The nuclear source remains …
We present nearly simultaneous Chandra and NuSTAR observations of two actively star-forming galaxies within 50 Mpc: NGC 3256 and NGC 3310. Both galaxies are detected by both Chandra and NuSTAR, which together provide the first-ever spectra of these two galaxies spanning 0.3-30 keV. The X-ray emission from both galaxies is spatially resolved by Chandra; we find that hot gas dominates the E < 1-3 keV emission while ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) dominate at E > 1-3 keV. The NuSTAR galaxy-wide spectra of both galaxies follow steep power-law distributions with Gamma ~ 2.6 at E > 5-7 keV, simil…
We present the X-ray source catalog for the Chandra monitoring observations of the elliptical galaxy, NGC 4649. The galaxy has been observed with Chandra ACIS-S3 in six separate pointings, reaching a total exposure of 299 ks. There are 501 X-ray sources detected in the 0.3-8.0 keV band in the merged observation or in one of the six individual observations; 399 sources are located within the D_25 ellipse. The observed 0.3-8.0 keV luminosities of these 501 sources range from 9.3x10^{36} erg/s to 5.4x10^{39} erg/s. The 90% detection completeness limit within the D_25 ellipse is 5.5x10^{37} erg/s.…
We present new X-ray spectral data for the Seyfert 1 nucleus in NGC 4151 observed with Chandra for 200 ks. A significant ACIS pileup is present, resulting in a non-linear count rate variation during the observation. With pileup corrected spectral fitting, we are able to recover the spectral parameters and find consistency with those derived from unpiled events in the ACIS readout streak and outer region from the bright nucleus. The absorption corrected 2-10 keV flux of the nucleus varied between 6E-11 and 1E-10 erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}. Similar to earlier Chandra studies of NGC 4151 at a historical …
Methods. We analyse two observations taken with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer of Chandra. We investigated the spectral response to a sudden flux decrease by a factor of 5, which occurred during the second observation. Results. We detect a highly ionised absorption component with an outflow velocity of -4670 km/s, one of the highest outflow velocity components observed in a Seyfert 1 galaxy. The spectra contain a relativistic O VIII Ly alpha line, and four absorption components spanning a range in ionisation parameter xi between 0.07 and 3.19. An emission component producing …
We report on Chandra observations of the bright ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) source in NGC3921. Previous XMM observations reported in the literature show the presence of a bright ULX at a 0.5-10 keV luminosity of 2x10^40 erg/s. Our Chandra observation finds the source at a lower luminosity of ~8x10^39 erg/s, furthermore, we provide a Chandra position of the ULX accurate to 0.7" at 90% confidence. The X-ray variability makes it unlikely that the high luminosity is caused by several separate X-ray sources. In 3 epochs of archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations we find a candidate counte…
We present models for the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. These are fitted to data obtained using the High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) on the Chandra X-ray observatory. The data show line and radiative recombination continuum (RRC) emission from a broad range of ions and elements. The models explore the importance of excitation processes for these lines including photoionization followed by recombination, radiative excitation by absorption of continuum radiation and inner shell fluorescence. The models show that the relative importance of these processes depends on the …
We present improved point-source catalogs for the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N) and the 250 ks Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (E-CDF-S), implementing a number of recent improvements in Chandra source-cataloging methodology. For the CDF-N/E-CDF-S, we provide a main catalog that contains 683/1003 X-ray sources detected with wavdetect at a false-positive probability threshold of $10^{-5}$ that also satisfy a binomial-probability source-selection criterion of $P<0.004$/$P<0.002$. Such an approach maximizes the number of reliable sources detected: a total of 196/275 main-catalog sources …
This paper is the third in a series in which we present deep Chandra ACIS-S imaging spectroscopy of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, devoted to study its complex circum-nuclear X-ray emission. Emission features in the soft X-ray spectrum of the bright extended emission (L[0.3-2keV]~10^40 erg/s) at r>130 pc (2") are consistent with the brighter OVII, OVIII, and NeIX lines seen in the Chandra HETGS and XMM-Newton RGS spectra below 2 keV. We construct emission line images of these features and find good morphological correlations with the narrow line region clouds mapped in [OIII]5007A. Self-consis…
We have obtained a high spatial resolution X-ray image of the nucleus of NGC 1068 using the High Resolution Camera (HRC-I) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which provides an unprecedented view of the innermost 1 arcsecond radius region of this galaxy. The HRC image resolves the narrow line region into X-ray emission clumps matching bright emission-line clouds in the HST [OIII]5007 images and allows comparison with sub-arcsecond scale radio jet for the first time. Two distinct X-ray knots are revealed at 1.3-1.4 arcsecond northeast and southwest of the nucleus. Based on the combined X-ra…
We use a combined 120 ks Chandra exposure to analyze X-ray edges produced by non-hydrostatic gas motions (sloshing) from galaxy collisions, and cavities formed by AGN activity. Evidence for gas sloshing is seen in the spiral morphology and multiple cold front edges in NGC 5846's X-ray surface brightness distribution, while lack of spiral structure in the temperature map suggests the perturbing interaction was not in the plane of the sky. Density and spectral modeling across the edges indicate the relative motion of gas in the cold fronts is at most transonic. Evidence for AGN activity is seen …
We present a Chandra monitoring campaign of the highly variable Seyfert galaxy UGC 4203 (the "Phoenix Galaxy") which revealed variations in the X-ray absorbing column density on time scales of two weeks. This is the third, clear case, after NGC 1365 and NGC 7582, of dramatic N_H variability on short time scales observed in a "changing look" source, i.e. an AGN observed in the past in both a reflection-dominated and a Compton-thin state. The inferred limits on the distance of the X-ray absorber from the center suggest that the X-ray "torus" could be one and the same with the broad emission line…
We performed simultaneous spectral analysis of 26.6 ksec of Chandra and 102.3 ksec of Suzaku X-ray data of the starburst galaxy NGC 3079. The spectra are extracted from four regions: 0.5' (2.25 kpc) circle, an inner 0.5'-1' (2.25--4.5 kpc) ring, and an outer 1'-2' (4.5--9 kpc) ring from Chandra, and 4' (18 kpc) circle from Suzaku, all centered on the nucleus. Fitting with thermal plasma models yields interstellar medium (ISM) temperatures of 0.65+0.05-0.04, 0.45+0.07-0.06, and 0.24+0.03-0.02 keV in the three regions, respectively. The combination of Chandra's high angular resolution and Suzaku…
