We present high-resolution spectral line and continuum VLBI and VLA observations of the nuclear region of NGC 253 at 22 GHz. While the water vapor masers in this region were detected on arcsecond and milliarcsecond scales, we could not detect any compact continuum emission with a 5 sigma upper limit of ~ 1 mJy. The observations reveal that the water maser emission is not related to a possible low-luminosity active galactic nucleus but is almost certainly associated with star-formation activity. Not detecting any compact continuum source on milliarcsecond scales also questions the presence of a - previously assumed - active nucleus in NGC 253.
We investigate the star cluster population in the outer parts of the starburst galaxy NGC 5253 using archive images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Based on the F415W, F555W, and F814W photometry ages and masses are estimated for bona-fide star cluster candidates. We find three potentially massive ($\ge 10 \time 10^5$ \Msun) star clusters at ages of order of 1-2 Gyr, implying, if confirmed, a high global star formation rate in NGC 5253 during that epoch. This result underlines earlier findings that the current star burst is just one episode in an very activ…
NGC 7582 is defined as a Starburst/AGN galaxy, since its optical and X-Ray spectra reveal both characteristics. In this work, we show the results of a stellar population modeling in a datacube taken with the Gemini South telescope. We found that $\sim$ 90% of the light in the field of view is emitted by stars that are less than 1 billion years old. A strong burst occurred about $\sim$ 6 million years ago and has nearly solar metallicity. We also found a Wolf-Rayet cluster.
We report the first detection of PDR molecular tracers, namely HOC+, and CO+, and confirm the detection of the also PDR tracer HCO towards the starburst galaxy NGC 253, claimed to be mainly dominated by shock heating and in an earlier stage of evolution than M 82, the prototypical extragalactic PDR. Our CO+ detection suffers from significant blending to a group of transitions of 13CH3OH, tentatively detected for the first time in the extragalactic interstellar medium. These species are efficiently formed in the highly UV irradiated outer layers of molecular clouds, as observed in the late stag…
There are few observational constraints on how the escape of ionizing photons from starburst galaxies depends on galactic parameters. Here, we report on the first major detection of an ionization cone in NGC 5253, a nearby starburst galaxy. This high-excitation feature is identified by mapping the emission-line ratios in the galaxy using [S III] lambda 9069, [S II] lambda 6716, and H_alpha narrow-band images from the Maryland-Magellan Tunable Filter at Las Campanas Observatory. The ionization cone appears optically thin, which is suggestive of the escape of ionizing photons. The cone morpholog…
We present measurements of carbon monoxide emission in the central region of the nearby starburst NGC 6000 taken with the Submillimeter Array. The J=2-1 transition of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O were imaged at a resolution of ~3''x2'' (450x300 pc). We accurately determine the dynamical center of NGC 6000 at R.A(J2000.0)=15h49m49.5s and dec(J2000.0)=-29d23'13'' which agrees with the peak of molecular emission position. The observed CO dynamics could be explained in the context of the presence of a bar potential affecting the molecular material, likely responsible for the strong nuclear concentration w…
NGC 7582 was identified as a Starburst galaxy in the optical \cite[(Veron et al. 1981)]{Veron et al.(1981)} but its X-Ray emission is typical of a Seyfert 1 galaxy \cite[(Ward et al. 1978)]{Ward et al.(1978)}. We analyzed a datacube of this object obtained with the GMOS-IFU on the Gemini-South telescope. After a subtraction of the stellar component using the {\sc starlight} code \cite[(Cid Fernandes et al. 2005)]{Cid Fernandes et al. (2005)}, we looked for optical signatures of the AGN. We detected a broad $Hα$ component (figure \ref{fig1}) in the source where \cite[Bianchi et al.(2007)]{Bianc…
X-ray properties of hot interstellar gas in a starburst galaxy NGC 253 were investigated to gain a further understanding of starburst-driven outflow activity by XMM-Newton and Suzaku. Spectroscopic analysis for three regions of the galaxy characterized by multiwavelength observations was conducted. The hot gas was represented by two thin thermal plasmas with temperatures of kT ~0.2 and ~0.6 keV. Abundance ratios i.e., O/Fe, Ne/Fe, Mg/Fe and Si/Fe, are consistent between three regions, which suggests the common origin of the hot gas. The abundance patterns are consistent with those of type II s…
We present the results of HCN/HCO+/HNC J=4-3 transition line observations of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 1614, obtained with ALMA Cycle 0. We find that high density molecular gas, traced with these lines, shows a velocity structure such that the northern (southern) side of the nucleus is redshifted (blueshifted) with respect to the nuclear velocity of this galaxy. The redshifted and blueshifted emission peaks are offset by ~0.6" at the northern and southern sides of the nucleus, respectively. At these offset positions, observations at infrared >3 micron indicate the presence of active dust…
All known mass distributions of recently formed star cluster populations resemble a "universal" power-law function. Here we assess the impact of the extremely disruptive environment in NGC 7742's circumnuclear starburst ring on the early evolution of the galaxy's high-mass (~10^5-10^7 Msun) star cluster population. Surprisingly, and contrary to expectations, at all ages -- including the youngest, <15 Myr -- the cluster mass functions are robustly and verifiably represented by lognormal distributions that resemble those commonly found only for old, evolved globular cluster systems in the local …
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7130, a known starburst-AGN composite galaxy. We employ standard emission line ratio diagnostics and maps of velocity dispersion and velocity field to investigate how the dominant ionising sources change as a function of radius. From the signatures of both star formation and AGN activity we show that NGC 7130 is a remarkably clean case of starburst-AGN mixing. We find a smooth transition from AGN dominated emission in the centre to pure star forming activity further out, from which we can estimate the r…
We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to show that the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4449 has an unusual abundance of luminous red star clusters. Joint constraints from integrated photometry, low-resolution spectroscopy, dynamical mass-to-light ratios, and resolved color-magnitude diagrams provide evidence that some of these clusters are old globular clusters. Spectroscopic data for two massive clusters suggest intermediate metallicities ([Fe/H] ~ -1) and subsolar Mg enhancement ([Mg/Fe] ~ -0.1 to -0.2). One of these clusters may be the nucleus of a tidally disrupting dwarf galaxy; the oth…
The under-abundance of very massive galaxies in the universe is frequently attributed to the effect of galactic winds. Although ionized galactic winds are readily observable most of the expelled mass is likely in cooler atomic and molecular phases. Expanding molecular shells observed in starburst systems such as NGC 253 and M 82 may facilitate the entrainment of molecular gas in the wind. While shell properties are well constrained, determining the amount of outflowing gas emerging from such shells and the connection between this gas and the ionized wind requires spatial resolution <100 pc cou…
The Fermi/LAT collaboration recently reported the detection of starburt galaxies in the high energy gamma-ray domain, as well as radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 objects. Motivated by the presence of sources close to the location of composite starburst/Seyfert 2 galaxies in the first year Fermi/LAT catalogue, we aim at studying high energy gamma-ray emission from such objects, and at disentangling the emission of starburst and Seyfert activity. We analysed 1.6 years of Fermi/LAT data from NGC 1068 and NGC 4945, which count among the brightest Seyfert 2 galaxies. We search for potential variabi…
We explore the role that gravitational instability plays in NGC 1068, a nearby Seyfert galaxy that exhibits unusually vigorous starburst activity. For this purpose, we use the Romeo-Falstad disc instability diagnostics and data from BIMA SONG, SDSS and SAURON. Our analysis illustrates that NGC 1068 is a gravitationally unstable "monster". Its starburst disc is subject to unusually powerful instabilities. Several processes, including AGN/stellar feedback, try to quench such instabilities from inside out by depressing the surface density of molecular gas across the central kpc, but they do not s…
The Fermi/LAT collaboration recently reported the detection of starburt galaxies in the high energy gamma-ray domain, as well as radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 objects, which were previously unusual extragalactic suspects for high energy emission. Motivated by the presence of sources close to the location of composite starburst/Seyfert 2 galaxies in the first year Fermi/LAT catalogue, we studied high energy gamma-ray emission from such objects, aiming at disentangling the emission of starburst and Seyfert activity. We analysed 1.6 years of Fermi/LAT data from NGC 1068 and NGC 4945, which cou…
We performed simultaneous spectral analysis of 26.6 ksec of Chandra and 102.3 ksec of Suzaku X-ray data of the starburst galaxy NGC 3079. The spectra are extracted from four regions: 0.5' (2.25 kpc) circle, an inner 0.5'-1' (2.25--4.5 kpc) ring, and an outer 1'-2' (4.5--9 kpc) ring from Chandra, and 4' (18 kpc) circle from Suzaku, all centered on the nucleus. Fitting with thermal plasma models yields interstellar medium (ISM) temperatures of 0.65+0.05-0.04, 0.45+0.07-0.06, and 0.24+0.03-0.02 keV in the three regions, respectively. The combination of Chandra's high angular resolution and Suzaku…
The GeV and TeV emission from M82 and NGC 253 observed by Fermi, HESS, and VERITAS constrains the physics of cosmic rays (CRs) in these dense starbursts. We argue that the gamma rays are predominantly hadronic in origin, as expected by previous studies. The measured fluxes imply that pionic losses are efficient for CR protons in both galaxies: we show that a fraction F_cal ~ 0.2 - 0.4 of the energy injected in high energy primary CR protons is lost to inelastic proton-proton collisions (pion production) before escape, producing gamma rays, neutrinos, and secondary electrons and positrons. We d…
We successfully detected a molecular outflow with a scale of 370-450 pc in the central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 3628 through deep CO(1-0) observations by using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA). The mass of the outflowing molecular gas is ~2.8x10^7 M_sun, and the outflow velocity is ~90(+/-10) km s^{-1}. The expansion timescale of the outflow is 3.3-6.8 Myr, and the molecular gas mass flow rate is 4.1-8.5 M_sun yr^{-1}. It requires mechanical energy of (1.8-2.8)x10^{54} erg to create this sub-kpc scale molecular outflow. In order to understand the evolution of the molecular outflow…
We present millimeter molecular-line complemented by optical observations, along with a reanalysis of archival centimeter HI and continuum data, to infer the global dynamics and determine where dense molecular gas and massive stars preferentially form in the circumnuclear starburst ring of the barred-spiral galaxy NGC 7552. We find diffuse molecular gas in a pair of dust lanes each running along the large-scale galactic bar, as well as in the circumnuclear starburst ring. We do not detect dense molecular gas in the dust lanes, but find such gas concentrated in two knots where the dust lanes ma…
We report high resolution 12CO(J = 2-1), 13CO(J = 2-1), and 12CO(J = 3-2) imaging of the Seyfert 1/starburst ring galaxy NGC 1097 with the Submillimeter Array to study the physical and kinematic properties of the 1-kpc circumnuclear starburst ring. Individual star clusters as detected in the HST map of Pa_alpha line emission have been used to determine the star formation rate, and are compared with the properties of the molecular gas. The molecular ring has been resolved into individual clumps at GMA-scale of 200--300 pc in all three CO lines. The intersection between the dust lanes and the st…
Measurement sensitivity in the energetic gamma-ray region has improved considerably, and is about to increase further in the near future, motivating a detailed calculation of high-energy (>100 MeV) and very-high-energy (VHE: >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. Adopting the convection-diffusion model for energetic electron and proton propagation, and accounting for all the relevant hadronic and leptonic processes, we determine the steady-state energy distributions of these particles by a detailed numerical treatment. The electron distribution is directly normal…
Near-infrared images obtained with the CFHT WIRCam are used to investigate the recent history of the nearby Sculptor Group spiral NGC 253. The distribution of stars in the disk is lop-sided, in the sense that the projected density of AGB stars in the north east portion of the disk between 10 and 20 kpc from the galaxy center is ~ 0.5 dex higher than on the opposite side of the galaxy. With the exception of the central 2 kpc, the north east portion of the disk appears to have been the site of the highest levels of star-forming activity in the galaxy during the past ~ 0.1 Gyr. Diffuse stellar st…
We present the results of an infrared photometric survey performed with NICS@TNG in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4214. We derived accurate integrated JK magnitudes of 10 young massive clusters and compared them with the already available Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet colors. These clusters are located in the combined ultraviolet-infrared colors planes on well defined sequences, whose shapes allow a precise determination of their age. By means of the comparison with suitable stellar evolution models we estimated ages, metallicities, reddening and masses of these clusters. All the analyz…
We present nearly simultaneous Chandra and NuSTAR observations of two actively star-forming galaxies within 50 Mpc: NGC 3256 and NGC 3310. Both galaxies are detected by both Chandra and NuSTAR, which together provide the first-ever spectra of these two galaxies spanning 0.3-30 keV. The X-ray emission from both galaxies is spatially resolved by Chandra; we find that hot gas dominates the E < 1-3 keV emission while ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) dominate at E > 1-3 keV. The NuSTAR galaxy-wide spectra of both galaxies follow steep power-law distributions with Gamma ~ 2.6 at E > 5-7 keV, simil…
