An alternative derivation of Einstein's Doppler shift and aberration formulae

I propose an alternative, purely kinematical, derivation of Einstein's Doppler formula. It is valid for periodic signals of any shape that propagate with the velocity of light. The formula is asymptotic in a parameter proportional to the relative variation of the distance source-receiver during one period. As a by-product, I also derive an alternative proof of Einstein's aberration formulae.

After an overview of various citations relevant in the context of photon propagation, the relativistic Doppler effect and the addition theorem of velocities are first derived taking into account momentum and energy conservation. Aberration and radiation pressure in the Klein and Poincare models

Aberration and radiation pressure reflected by a moving mirror are examples of the Klein and Poincaré models of hyperbolic geometry, respectively. Reflection at a moving mirror produces a two-way Dopper shift. Its one-way counterpart, aberration, has nothing to do with the radiation pressure on a moving mirror, but, rather with the pressure on a completely absorbing surface. Both pressures vanish when the angle of parallelism is reached. Two-way, second-order Doppler shifts can be used to establish experimentally the existence of an angle of parallelism.

Problems with "GR without SR: A gravitational-domain description of first-order Doppler effects" (gr-qc/9807084)

Einstein's goal of producing an advanced gravitational model that was independent of special relativity's "non-gravitational" derivations has arguably still not been achieved. The author produced a paper in 1998 outlining a possible method of attack on the problem based on shift equivalence principles ("Doppler mass shift"). Some problems with this paper have since come to light. We list some further developments, some papers not cited in gr-qc/9807084, some experimental results missed by the author, and identify a problem with the paper's approach to aberration effects.

Classical Aberration And Obliquation

This is the first of several monographs to be devoted to the optics of accelerated systems. They are being published for the benefit of those who may wish to have another way of looking at kineoptical problems, and also to demonstrate that the laws of optics are unwavering in their support of the view that extragalactic redshifts need not be velocity doppler shifts nor cosmological recession shifts. We investigate in detail an apparently unnoticed consequence of special relativity. It consists in time dilation/contraction and frequency shift for emitted light affecting accelerated reference frames at astronomical distances from an inertial observer. The relativistic Doppler effect: when a zero frequency shift or a red shift exists for sources approaching the observer

It is shown without making use of Lorentz transformation that there exists a phenomenon of relativistic zero-frequency shift in Doppler effect for a plane wave in free space, observed in two inertial frames of relative motion, and the zero shift takes place at a maximum aberration of light.
