In this photometric study of the stellar association LH 95 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) we focus on the pre-main Sequence (PMS) population in order to construct, for the first time, the sub-solar initial mass function (IMF) in the LMC. We use the deepest photometry ever performed in the LMC with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope(HST). We carry out a Monte Carlo technique to subtract the contribution of the general field of LMC and we isolate the central region in the observed area of the association. We study the mass function of its field-subtracted population. For this purpose, we introduce a new set of evolutionary models, derived from the calculations on the evolution of PMS stars by Siess et al. We use these models with our observations of LH 95 to derive the IMF of the system, which is reliably constructed down to 0.43 M_sun, the lowest mass ever observed within reasonable completeness in the Magellanic Clouds. Consequently, its construction offers an outstanding improvement in our understanding of the low-mass star formation in the LMC. The system IMF of LH 95 shows a definite change in its slope at 1 M_sun, where it becomes more shallow. In general, the shape of this IMF agrees very well with the average Galactic IMF, down to the sub-solar regime. As far as the slope of this system IMF is concerned, it is found to be somewhat more shallow than the corresponding classical Galactic IMF in the sub-solar regime, probably due to unresolved binarity, while for stars with M>1M_sun it becomes slightly steeper. We do not find significant differences in the shape of the overall IMF of LH 95 from that of each of the three individual sub-clusters, suggesting that the IMF of LH 95 is not subject to local variability.
We present a collection of 250 anomalous Cepheids (ACs) discovered in the OGLE-IV fields toward the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The LMC sample is an extension of the OGLE-III Catalog of ACs published in 2008, while the SMC sample contains the first known bona fide ACs in this galaxy. The total sample is composed of 141 ACs in the LMC and 109 ACs in the SMC. All these stars pulsate in single modes: fundamental (174 objects) or first overtone (76 objects). Additionally, we report the discovery of four ACs located in the foreground of the Magellanic Clouds. These are the first f…
Context. The properties of variable stars can give independent constraints on the star formation history of the host galaxy, by determining the age and metallicity of the parent population. Aims. We investigate the pulsation properties of 84 Anomalous Cepheids (ACs) detected by the OGLE-III survey in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), in order to understand the formation mechanism and the characteristics of the parent population they came from. Methods. We used an updated theoretical pulsation scenario to derive the mass and the pulsation mode of each AC in the sample. We also used a Kolmogorov…
We analyze stellar proper motions in the COSMOS field to assess the presence of bulk motions. At bright magnitudes (G-band 18.5--20.76 AB), we use the proper motions of 1,010 stars in the Gaia DR2 catalog. At the faint end, we computed proper motions of 11,519 point-like objects at i-band magnitudes 19--25 AB using Hubble ACS and Subaru HSC, which span two epochs about 11 years apart. In order to measure these proper motions with unprecedented accuracy at faint magnitudes, we developed a foundational set of astrometric tools which will be required for Joint Survey Processing (JSP) of data from…
(abridged) Type II and anomalous Cepheids (ACs) are useful distance indicators when there are too few classical Cepheids or when RR Lyrae stars are too faint. We study the sample of 335 Type II and ACs in the Small and Large MCls detected in OGLE-III data. The SEDs are constructed and fitted with a dust radiative transfer model, thereby leading to a determination of luminosity and effective temperature. In addition, a subsample of targets is investigated for possible binarity by looking for the light-time travel effect (LITE). Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams (HRD) are constructed and compared to ev…
Red supergiant stars in binary systems II. Confirmation of B-type companions of red supergiants in the Small Magellanic Cloud using Hubble ultra-violet spectroscopy
We started a photometric survey using the WFC3/UVIS instrument onboard the Hubble Space Telescope to search for multiple populations within Magellanic Cloud star clusters at various ages. In this paper, we introduce this survey. As first results of this programme, we also present multi-band photometric observations of NGC 121 in different filters taken with the WFC3/UVIS and ACS/WFC instruments. We analyze the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of NGC 121, which is the only "classical" globular cluster within the Small Magellanic Cloud. Thereby, we use the pseudo-colour C_(F336W,F438W,F343N)=(F336…
The Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation is the key tool for measuring astronomical distances and for establishing the extragalactic distance scale. In particular, the local value of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) strongly depends on Cepheid distance measurements. The recent Gaia Data Releases and other parallax measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) already enabled to improve the accuracy of the slope ($α$) and intercept ($β$) of the PL relation. However, the dependence of this law on metallicity is still largely debated. In this paper, we combine three samples of Cepheids in the …

We perform near ultraviolet ACS prism spectroscopy of 11 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) planetary nebulae (PNe) with the main aim of deriving the abundance of carbon. The analysis of the ACS spectra provide reliable atomic carbon abundances for all but a couple of our targets; ionic C^(2+) abundances are calculated for all target PNe. With the present paper we more than double the number of SMC PNe with known carbon abundances, providing a good database to study the elemental evolution in low- and intermediate-mass stars at low metallicity. We study carbon abundances of Magellanic Cloud PNe in t…
We present integrated photometry and color-magnitude diagrams for 161 star clusters in M33, of which 115 were previously uncataloged, using the Advanced Camera For Surveys Wide Field Channel onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The integrated V-band magnitudes of these clusters range from Mv~-9 to as faint as Mv~-4, extending the depth of the existing M33 cluster catalogs by ~1 mag. Comparisons of theoretical isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams using the Padova models yield ages for 148 of these star clusters. The ages range from Log (t)~7.0 to Log (t)~9.0. Our color-magnitude diagrams a…
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury Program on the Orion Nebula Cluster has used 104 orbits of HST time to image the Great Orion Nebula region with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), the Wide-Field/Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi Object Spectrograph (NICMOS) instruments in 11 filters ranging from the U-band to the H-band equivalent of HST. The program has been intended to perform the definitive study of the stellar component of the ONC at visible wavelengths, addressing key questions like the cluster IMF, age spread, mass accretion, binarity and ciru…
Our goal in this paper is to derive a carbon-star luminosity function that will eventually be used to determine distances to galaxies at $50$-$60$ Mpc and hence yield a value of the Hubble constant. Cool N-type carbon stars exhibit redder near-infrared colours than oxygen-rich stars. Using Two Micron All Sky Survey near-infrared photometry and the Gaia Data Release 2, we identify carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds (MC) and the Milky Way (MW). Carbon stars in the MC appear as a distinct horizontal feature in the near-infrared ($(J-K_s)_0$, $M_J$) colour-magnitude diagram. We build a colour s…
Multiple stellar populations (MPs) representing star-to-star light-element abundance variations are common in nearly all ancient Galactic globular clusters. Here we provide the strongest evidence yet that the populous, ~ 1.7 Gyr-old Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2173 also exhibits light-element abundance variations. Thus, our results suggest that NGC 2173 is the youngest cluster for which MPs have been confirmed to date. Our conclusion is based on the distinct bifurcation at the tip of its red-giant branch in high-quality color--magnitude diagrams generated from Hubble Space Telescope ima…
A large number of intermediate-age (~1-2-Gyr old) globular clusters (GCs) in the Large and the Small Magellanic Cloud (MC) exhibit either bimodal or extended main-sequence (MS) turn off and dual red clump. Moreover, recent papers have shown that the MS of the young clusters NGC1844 and NGC1856 is either broadened or split. These features of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) are not consistent with a single isochrone and suggest that star clusters in MCs have experienced a prolonged star formation, in close analogy with Milky-Way GCs with multiple stellar populations. As an alternative, stellar…
We leverage new high-quality data from Hubble Space Telescope program GO-14164 to explore the variation in horizontal branch morphology among globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our new observations lead to photometry with a precision commensurate with that available for the Galactic globular cluster population. Our analysis indicates that, once metallicity is accounted for, clusters in the LMC largely share similar horizontal branch morphologies regardless of their location within the system. Furthermore, the LMC clusters possess, on average, slightly redder morphologies th…
Using the high-resolution observations obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, we analyzed the blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2213. We found that the radial distribution of BSSs is consistent with that of the normal giant stars in NGC 2213, showing no evidence of mass segregation. However, an analytic calculation carried out for these BSSs shows that they are already dynamically old, because the estimated half-mass relaxation time for these BSSs is significantly shorter than the isochronal age of the cluster. We also performed direct N-body simulations fo…
NGC1846 and NGC1783 are two massive star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, hosting both an extended main sequence turn-off and a dual clump of red giants. They present similar masses but differ mainly in angular size. Starting from their high-quality ACS data in the F435W, F555W and F814W filters, and updated sets of stellar evolutionary tracks, we derive their star formation rates as a function of age, SFR(t), by means of the classical method of CMD reconstruction which is usually applied to nearby galaxies. The method confirms the extended periods of star formation derived from previou…
Intermediate-age star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds harbour signatures of the multiple stellar populations long thought to be restricted to old globular clusters. We compare synthetic horizontal branch models with Hubble Space Telescope photometry of clusters in the Magellanic Clouds, with age between ~2 and ~10 Gyr, namely NGC 121, Lindsay 1, NGC 339, NGC 416, Lindsay 38, Lindsay 113, Hodge 6 and NGC 1978. We find a clear signature of initial helium abundance spreads (delta(Y)) in four out of these eight clusters (NGC 121, Lindsay 1, NGC 339, NGC 416) and we quantify the value of delta(Y)…
We present a study of the compact H II region N66A in the SMC pre-eminent starburst region N66/NGC346. Despite extensive research on various components of the N66/NGC346 complex, few studies have so far focused on N66A, which is a special object in the whole complex and therefore deserves scrutiny. The study of this compact H II region and its fellow objects seems important in the framework of massive star formation in the Magellanic Clouds. This analysis is based mainly on our optical ESO NTT observations, both imaging and spectroscopy, coupled with archive HST ACS data and Spitzer infrared i…
We present measurements of positions and relative proper motions in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We detail the construction of a single-epoch astrometric reference frame, based on specially-designed observations obtained with the two main imaging instruments ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Internal comparisons indicate a sub milli-arc-second (mas) precision in the positions and the presence of semi-periodic systematics with a mean amplitude of ~0.8 mas. We combined these observations with numerous archival images taken with WFPC2 an…
We have analyzed populations of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in 24 Magellanic Cloud star clusters using multi-passband Hubble Space Telescope images. We compiled a homogeneous BSS database, containing both traditional and evolved BSSs. We uncovered a sub-linear correlation between the number of BSSs in the cluster cores and the clusters' core masses, characterized by a power-law index of $0.51\pm 0.07$. For low stellar collision rates, the mass-normalized number of BSSs depends only weakly (or perhaps not at all) on the collision rate, implying that the binary-driven BSS formation channel domin…
Magellanic Clouds are of extreme importance to the study of the star formation process in low metallicity environments. In this paper we report on the discovery of pre-main sequence candidates and young embedded stellar objects in N11 located in the Large Magellanic Cloud to cast light on the star formation scenario. We would like to remind that this comparison is complicated by the presence of a large age dispersion detected in the fields. Deep archive HST/ACS photometry is used to derive color-magnitude diagrams of the associations in N~11 and of the foreground field population. These data a…
We present the first study of high-precision internal proper motions (PMs) in a large sample of globular clusters, based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data obtained over the past decade with the ACS/WFC, ACS/HRC, and WFC3/UVIS instruments. We determine PMs for over 1.3 million stars in the central regions of 22 clusters, with a median number of ~60,000 stars per cluster. These PMs have the potential to significantly advance our understanding of the internal kinematics of globular clusters by extending past line-of-sight (LOS) velocity measurements to two- or three-dimensional velocities, low…
