We present an experimental investigation of drying suspensions of both hard and soft nanolatex spheres. The crack formation is examined as a function of the proportion of hard and soft deformable particles, leading to tunable elastic properties of the drying film. In our experiments corresponding to a given layer thickness, no crack formation could be observed below an onset value of the proportion in hard spheres around 0.45. During the drying process, the mass of films with various compositions in hard and soft spheres is measured as a function of time. The results suggest that the soft particles undergo deformation that releases the internal stresses. The spacing between cracks is measured as a function of the layer thickness for various compositions in hard and soft spheres.
The dynamic mechanical properties of reactive materials (e.g., high density mixtures of polytetraflouroethylene (PTFE), aluminum (Al) and tungsten (W) powders) can be tailored by changing the morphology of the particles and porosity. Cold isostatically pressed PTFE-Al-W powder composites with fine metallic particles and a higher porosity exhibited higher ultimate compressive strength than less porous composites having equivalent mass ratios with coarse W particles. The mesoscale force chains between the fine metallic particles are responsible for this unusual phenomenon. We observed macrocrack…
Polymer nanoparticle composites (PNC) with ultra high loading of nanoparticles (> 50%) have been shown to exhibit markedly improved strength, stiffness, and toughness simultaneously compared to the neat systems of their components. Recent experimental studies on the effect of polymer fill fraction in these highly loaded PNCs reveal that even at low polymer fill fractions, hardness and modulus increase significantly. In this work, we aim to understand the origin of these performance enhancements by examining the dynamics of both polymer and nanoparticles (NP) under tensile deformation. We perfo…
Nanoparticles with hydrophobic capping ligands and amphiphilic phospholipids are both found to self-assemble into monolayer films when deposited on the air water interface. By separately measuring the anisotropic stress response of these films under uniaxial compression, we obtain both the 2D compressive and shear moduli of a range of different thin nanoparticle and phospholipid films. The compressive moduli of both nanoparticle and lipid films in the solid phase are on the same order of magnitude, whereas the shear moduli of the lipid films are found to be significantly lower. Additionally th…
Mechanical properties are intrinsically related to the structures and dynamics of systems. The main tools to investigate mechanical properties are rheology and microrheology. Those techniques can focus on the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical properties of any kind of colloidal system and/or nanostructures. Several kinds of experiments can be conducted to study the mechanical properties of colloidal systems; however, their interpretation might not be always straightforward. Here, our purpose is to provide a simple guide for beginners on most common rheological experiments.
When sheets of layered material like C, WS$_2$ or BN are restricted to finite sizes, they generally form single- and multi-walled hollow nanoparticles in order to avoid dangling bonds. Using continuum approaches to model elastic deformation and van der Waals interactions of spherical nanoparticles, we predict the variation of mechanical stability, adhesive properties and phase behavior with radius $R$ and thickness $h$. We find that mechanical stability is limited by forces in the nN range and pressures in the GPa range. Adhesion energies scale linearly with $R$, but depend only weakly on $h$.…
We study the influence of spherical, triangular, and rod-like nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of a polymer nanocomposite (PNC), via coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on how the nanoparticle size, loading, mass, and shape influence the PNC's elastic modulus, stress at failure and resistance against cavity formation and growth, under external stress. We find that in the regime of strong polymer-nanoparticle interactions, the formation of a polymer network via temporary polymer-nanoparticle crosslinks has a predominant role on the PNC reinforcement. Spherical nano…
Conducting polymers have wide technological applications in sensors, actuators, electric and optical devices, solar cells etc. To improve their operational performance, mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical properties, such polymers are doped with carbon allotrope nanofillers. Functionality of the novel nanocomposite polymers may be stipulated by size characteristics of nanoparticles and the polymer, different physical effects like charge transfer in such objects etc. We characterize and analyze structure, elastic, electric properties and of novel polymer nanocomposites, isotactic polypr…
We demonstrate that highly-ordered two-dimensional crystals of ligand-capped gold nanoparticles display a local photo-mechanical stiffness as high as that of solids such as graphite. In out-of equilibrium electron diffraction experiments, a strong temperature jump is induced in a thin film with a femtosecond laser pulse. The initial electronic excitation transfers energy to the underlying structural degrees of freedom, with a rate generally proportional to the stiffness of the material. With femtosecond small-angle electron diffraction, we observe the temporal evolution of the diffraction feat…
Some of our recent studies of the structure and mechanical properties of a special type of nanocomposite are reviewed here. In silica-latex systems, a latex film with silica inclusions is formed from a colloidal solution of both components. During drying of the solution, the formation of silica domains can be controlled via the physico-chemical properties of the solution. Well-defined silica aggregates embedded in a polymer matrix can be generated, and the mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposite have been shown to be directly correlated to the average structure.
The joint magnetic and mechanical motion of a ferromagnetic nanoparticle in a viscous fluid is considered within the dynamical approach. The equation based on the total momentum conservation law is used for the description of the mechanical rotation, while the modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation is utilized for the description of the internal magnetic dynamics. The exact expressions for the particles trajectories and the power loss are obtained in the linear approximation. The comparison with the results of other widespread approaches, such as the model of fixed particle and the model of…

We analyze the evolution of the mechanical response of a colloidal suspension to an external tensile stress, from fracture to flow, as a function of the distance from the sol-gel transition. We cease to observe cracks at a finite distance from the transition. In an intermediate region where the phenomenon is clearly hysteretic, we observe the coexistence of both flow and fracture. Even when cracks are observed, the material in fact flows over a distance that increases in the vicinity of the transition.
Nanocrystals, used as building blocks, may self-assemble in long-range ordered assemblies socalled supracrystals. Different structures FCC, BCC but also Frank-Kasper phases have been observed and the roles of the soft ligands surrounding the rigid crystalline cores in the self-assembly process is not yet well understood and need further study. The mechanical behavior under hydrostatic pressure of 3D single FCC crystals built by gold nanoparticles has been investigated using HP-SAXS and compared with pure alkane, corresponding to the ligand chain. No structural transition has been observed up t…
Magnetic composite materials i.e. elastomers, polymer gels, or polymer solutions with embedded magnetic nanoparticles are useful for many technical and bio-medical applications. However, the microscopic details of the coupling mechanisms between the magnetic properties of the particles and the mechanical properties of the (visco)elastic polymer matrix remain unresolved. Here we study the response of a single-domain spherical magnetic nanoparticle that is suspended in a polymer solution to alternating magnetic fields. As interactions we consider only excluded volume interactions with the polyme…
A promising approach of designing mesostructured materials with novel physical behavior is to combine unique optical and electronic properties of solid nanoparticles with long-range ordering and facile response of soft matter to weak external stimuli. Here we design, practically realize, and characterize orientationally ordered nematic liquid crystalline dispersions of rod-like upconversion nanoparticles. Boundary conditions on particle surfaces, defined through surface functionalization, promote spontaneous unidirectional self-alignment of the dispersed rod-like nanoparticles, mechanically co…
We study the microrheology of nanoparticle shells [Dinsmore et al. Science 298, 1006 (2002)] and viral capsids [Ivanovska et al. PNAS 101, 7600 (2004)] by computing the mechanical response function and thermal fluctuation spectrum of a viscoelastic spherical shell that is permeable to the surrounding solvent. We determine analytically the damped dynamics of the shear, bend, and compression modes of the shell coupled to the solvent both inside and outside the sphere in the zero Reynolds number limit. We identify fundamental length and time scales in the system, and compute the thermal correlati…
