This paper presents calculations for forbidden emission line profile shapes arising from colliding wind binaries. The main application is for systems involving a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star and an OB star companion. The WR wind is assumed to dominate the forbidden line emission. The colliding wind interaction is treated as an archimedean spiral with an inner boundary. Under the assumptions of the model, the major findings are as follows. (a) The redistribution of the WR wind as a result of the wind collision is not flux conservative but typically produces an excess of line emission; however, this excess is modest at around the 10% level. (b) Deviations from a flat-top profile shape for a spherical wind are greatest for viewing inclinations that are more nearly face-on to the orbital plane. At intermediate viewing inclinations, profiles display only mild deviations from a flat-top shape. (c) The profile shape can be used to constrain the colliding wind bow shock opening angle. (d) Structure in the line profile tends to be suppressed in binaries of shorter periods. (e) Obtaining data for multiple forbidden lines is important since different lines probe different characteristic radial scales. Our models are discussed in relation to ISO data for WR 147 and gamma Vel (WR11). The lines for WR 147 are probably not accurate enough to draw firm conclusions. For gamma Vel, individual line morphologies are broadly reproducible but not simultaneously so for the claimed wind and orbital parameters. Overall, the effort demonstrates how lines that are sensitive to the large-scale wind can help to deduce binary system properties and provide new tests of numerical simulations.
Massive star binaries are critical laboratories for measuring masses and stellar wind mass-loss rates. A major challenge is inferring viewing inclination and extracting information about the colliding wind interaction (CWI) region. Polarimetric variability from electron scattering in the highly ionized winds provides important diagnostic information about system geometry. We combine for the first time the well-known generalized treatment of \citet{brown_polarisation_1978} for variable polarization from binaries with the semi-analytic solution for the geometry and surface density CWI shock inte…
When a core-collapse supernova explodes in a binary star system, the ejecta might encounter an overdense shell, where the stellar winds of the two stars previously collided. In this work, we investigate effects of such interactions on supernova light curves on time-scales from the early flash ionization signatures to approximately one year after the explosion. We construct a model of the colliding-wind shell in an orbiting binary star system and we provide an analytical expression for the shell thickness and density, which we calibrate with three-dimensional adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynam…

We carry out a numerical experiment of ejecting winds in a massive colliding wind binary system, and quantifying the accretion onto the secondary star under different primary mass loss rates. We set a binary system comprising a Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) as the primary and a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star as the secondary, and vary the mass loss rate of the LBV to obtain different values of wind momentum ratio $η$. Our simulations include two sets of cases: one where the stars are stationary, and one that includes the orbital motion. As $η$ decreases the colliding wind structure moves closer to the se…
A Radio Pulsar Search of the Gamma-ray Binaries LS I +61 303 and LS 5039
Several tens of massive binary systems display indirect, or even strong evidence for non-thermal radio emission, hence their particle accelerator status. These objects are referred to as particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries (PACWBs). WR 133 is one of the shortest period Wolf-Rayet + O systems in this category, and is therefore critical to characterize the boundaries of the parameter space adequate for particle acceleration in massive binaries. Our methodology consists in analyzing JVLA observations of WR 133 at different epochs to search for compelling evidence for a phase-locked vari…
As sources of chemical enrichment, ionizing radiation and energetic feedback, massive stars drive the ecology of their host galaxies despite their relative rarity, additionally to yielding compact remnants, which can generate gravitational waves. The evolution of massive stars is crucially informed by their detailed mass-loss history; however, wind structures on a variety of scales cause important uncertainties on their mass-loss rates. Binary systems can place further constraints on the mass-loss properties of massive stars, especially colliding-wind binaries. In this paper, we review how the…
Context. Colliding-wind binaries are massive stellar systems featuring strong, interacting winds. These binaries may be actual particle accelerators, making them variable gamma-ray sources due to changes in the wind collision region along the orbit. However, only two of these massive stellar binary systems have been identified as high-energy sources. The first and archetypical system of this class is Eta Carinae, a bright gamma-ray source with orbital variability peaking around its periastron passage. Aims. The origin of the high energy emission in Eta Carinae is still unclear, with both lepto…
We investigated the long-term behaviour in X-rays of the colliding wind binary WR 25, using archival data obtained with Suzaku, Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR spanning over ~16 years. Our analysis reveals phase-locked variations repeating consistently over many consecutive orbits, in agreement with an X-ray emission fully explained by thermal emission from the colliding winds in the 208-d orbit. We report on a significant deviation of the X-ray flux with respect to the 1/D trend (expected for adiabatic shocked winds) close to periastron passage. The absence of a drop in post-shock plasma temper…
Using XMM-Newton, we undertook a dedicated project to search for X-ray bright wind-wind collisions in 18 WR+OB systems. We complemented these observations with Swift and Chandra datasets, allowing for the study of two additional systems. We also improved the ephemerides, for these systems displaying photometric changes, using TESS, Kepler, and ASAS-SN data. Five systems displayed a very faint X-ray emission ($\log [L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm BOL}]<-8$) and three a faint one ($\log [L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm BOL}]\sim-7$), incompatible with typical colliding wind emission: not all WR binaries are thus X-ray brigh…
We present a dust spectral energy distribution (SED) and binary stellar population analysis revisiting the dust production rates (DPRs) in the winds of carbon-rich Wolf-Rayet (WC) binaries and their impact on galactic dust budgets. DustEM SED models of 19 Galactic WC ``dustars" reveal DPRs of $\dot{M}_d\sim10^{-10}-10^{-6}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and carbon dust condensation fractions, $χ_C$, between $0.002 - 40\%$. A large ($0.1 - 1.0$ $μ$m) dust grain size composition is favored for efficient dustars where $χ_C\gtrsim1\%$. Results for dustars with known orbital periods verify a power-law relati…
We present spectroscopic analysis of the luminous X-ray source Melnick 33Na (Mk 33Na, HSH95 16) in the LMC 30 Doradus region (Tarantula Nebula), utilising new time-series VLT/UVES spectroscopy. We confirm Mk 33Na as a double-lined O-type spectroscopic binary with a mass ratio $q = 0.63 \pm 0.02$, $e = 0.33 \pm 0.01$ and orbital period of $18.3 \pm 0.1$ days, supporting the favoured period from X-ray observations obtained via the Tarantula -- Revealed by X-rays (T-ReX) survey. Disentangled spectra of each component provide spectral types of OC2.5 If* and O4 V for the primary and secondary respe…
Using observations from Chandra, Swift and XMM-Newton, we investigate the high-energy properties of all known (18) Be+sdO systems as well as 7 additional Be binaries suspected to harbour stripped stars. The observed X-ray properties are found to be similar to those observed for other Be samples. The vast majority of these systems (15 out of 25) display very faint (and soft) X-ray emission, and six others are certainly not bright X-ray sources. Only two systems display gamma-Cas characteristics (i.e. bright and hard X-rays), and one of them is a new detection: HD37202 (zeta Tau). It presents an…
Massive, early type stars have been detected as radio sources for many decades. Their thermal winds radiate free-free continuum and in binary systems hosting a colliding-wind region, non-thermal emission has also been detected. To date, the most abundant data have been collected from frequencies higher than 1 GHz. We present here the results obtained from observations at 325 and 610 MHz, carried out with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, of all known Wolf-Rayet and O-type stars encompassed in area of ~15 sq degrees centred on the Cygnus region. We report on the detection of 11 massive stars…
Some supernova (SN) explosions show evidence for interaction with pre-existing non-spherically symmetric circumstellar medium (CSM) in their light curves, spectral line profiles, and polarization signatures. To better understand the connection with binary stars and to aid in the interpretation of observations, we perform two-dimensional axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations where an expanding spherical SN ejecta initialized with realistic density and velocity profiles collide with various aspherical CSM distributions. We consider CSM in the form of a circumstellar disk, colliding wind shells i…
