We measured the effects of periodic surface holes, created using a focused ion beam, on the phase diagram of the vortex matter in high-T_c Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} crystals. Differential magneto-optical measurements show that the irreversibility line is shifted to higher fields and temperatures, with respect to the pristine melting line. The irreversibility line displays weak field dependence between integer matching fields indicating multiple-flux-quanta pinning at holes. We find reduced equilibrium compressibility of the vortex matter at integer matching fields, which is strong evidence for the existence of thermodynamic Mott insulator phases. Shaking with a transverse ac field surprisingly reveals first-order melting that is not shifted with respect to the pristine melting line and that seems to occur within the Mott insulator regions. This melting is understood to be the first-order transition in the bulk of the crystal beneath the surface holes. The transition is visible at the surface, despite the reduced vortex compressibility in the top layer.
A low concentration of columnar defects is reported to transform a first-order vortex lattice melting line in BSCCO crystals into alternating segments of first-order and second-order transitions separated by two critical points. As the density of CDs is increased, the critical points shift apart and the range of the intermediate second-order transition expands. A third, low temperature critical point was also observed in one sample. The measurement of equilibrium magnetization and the mapping of the melting line down to 27K was made possible by employment of the shaking technique.
Using a novel differential magneto-optical imaging technique we investigate the phenomenon of vortex lattice melting in crystals of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 (BSCCO). The images of melting reveal complex patterns in the formation and evolution of the vortex solid-liquid interface with varying field (H) or temperature (T). We believe that the complex melting patterns are due to a random distribution of material disorder or inhomogeneities across the sample, which create fluctuations in the local melting temperature or field value. To study the fluctuations in the local melting temperature / field, we h…
The angular dependence of the first-order phase transition (FOT) in the vortex lattice in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ crystals was investigated by a low frequency AC shielding technique (with the AC field $\parallel c$), in which the static-field component parallel to $c$- ($H_{\perp}$) was varied with the in-plane field $H_{\parallel}$ held constant. The linear decrease of the FOT field $H_{\perp}^{FOT}$ with increasing $H_{\parallel}$ ends at a temperature--dependent critical value of $H_{\parallel}$. A new transition, marked by the abrupt drop of the $ab$-plane shielding current, appe…
Multilevel Monte Carlo simulations of a BSCCO system are carried out including both Josephson as well as electromagnetic couplings for a range of anisotropies. A first order melting transition of the flux lattice is seen on increasing the temperature and/or the magnetic field. The phase diagram for BSCCO is obtained for different values of the anisotropy parameter $γ$. The best fit to the experimental results of D. Majer {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 75}, 1166 (1995)] is obtained for $γ\approx 250$ provided one assumes a temperature dependence $λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)=1-t$ of the penetration depth…
We show that thermally activated interstitial and vacancy defects can lead to first order melting of a vortex lattice. We obtain good agreement with experimentally measured melting curve, latent heat, and magnetization jumps for YBCO and BSCCO. The shear modulus of the vortex liquid is frequency dependent and crosses over from zero at low frequencies to a finite value at high frequencies. We also find a small surface tension between the vortex line liquid and the vortex lattice.
The effect of columnar pins on the flux-lines melting transition in high-temperature superconductors is studied using Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. We highlight the similarities and differences in the effects of columnar disorder on the melting transition in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) and the highly anisotropic Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO) at magnetic fields such that the mean separation between flux-lines is smaller than the penetration length. For pure systems, a first order transition from a flux-line solid to a liquid phase is seen as the temperature is increased. When…
The structure function of the vortex lattice of layered superconductor is calculated to one-loop order. Based on a phenomenological melting criterion concerning the Debye-Waller factor, we calculate the melting line of the vortex lattice, and compare our results to Monte Carlo simulation and experiment. We find that our results are quantitatively in good agreement with the Monte Carlo results. Moreover, our analytic calculation of the melting line of BSCCO fits the experiment reasonably well in a temperature range not far from Tc.
The local effect of the Josephson vortices on the vortex lattice melting process in \BSCCO crystals in the presence of an in-plane field $H_{ab}$ is studied by differential magneto-optical imaging. The melting process is found to commence along the Josephson vortex stacks, forming a mesomorphic phase of periodic liquid and solid lamellas, the direction and spacing of which are controlled by $H_{ab}$. The reduction of the local melting field $H_m$ along the Josephson vortex stacks is more than an order of magnitude larger than the reduction of the average bulk $H_m$ by $H_{ab}$.
Vortex lattices in the high temperature superconductors undergo a first order phase transition which has thus far been regarded as melting from a solid to a liquid. We point out an alternative possibility of a two step process in which there is a first order transition from an ordinary vortex lattice to a soft vortex solid followed by another first order melting transition from the soft vortex solid to a vortex liquid. We focus on the first step. This premelting transition is induced by vacancy and interstitial vortex lines. We obtain good agreement with the experimental transition temperature…
The electronic phase diagram of the weak spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr(1-x)Lax)3Ir2O7 is determined via an exhaustive experimental study. Upon doping electrons via La substitution, an immediate collapse in resistivity occurs along with a narrow regime of nanoscale phase separation comprised of antiferromagnetic, insulating regions and paramagnetic, metallic puddles persisting until x~0.04. Continued electron doping results in an abrupt, first-order phase boundary where the Neel state is suppressed and a homogenous, correlated, metallic state appears with an enhanced spin susceptibility and loc…
A vortex-glass transition due to point disorder in layered superconductors is studied for the case with an applied field {\it parallel} to the layers. Our calculation of tilt responses indicates that, irrespective of the magnitude of the field, the resulting glass phase, Josephson-vortex-glass (JG), should have a transverse Meissner effect, as in a planar splayed glass phase, only for a tilt perpendicular to the layers. Further, focusing on the high field (and/or high anisotropy) region $B \sqrtΓ > ϕ_0/d^2$, where $Γ$ is the mass anisotropy in the Lawrence-Doniach model, the JG transition line…
In the HTC superconductor BSCCO, local measurements of magnetic field in the mixed state show sharp changes as a function of applied field or temperature, which have been interpreted as evidence for a first-order flux-lattice melting (or sublimation) transition . The entropy associated with such a transition was calculated from the magnetisation jumps using a Clausius-Clapeyron-type relationship and was found to increase with temperature up to a value of nearly 1.5kB per flux-line per CuO layer near Tc. This is considerably larger than would be expected, even if the fluid phase consisted of co…
A three-orbital model derived from the two-dimensional projection of the $ab$ $initio$ Hamiltonian for alkaline doped fullerene A$_3$C$_{60}$ with A=Cs,Rb,K is studied by a variational Monte Carlo method. We correctly reproduce the experimental isotropic s-wave superconductivity around the $ab$ $initio$ parameters. With narrowing the bandwidth, the transition to an insulator is also reproduced, where orbital symmetry is found to be spontaneously broken with emergence of an excitonic Mott insulator for two orbitals and an antiferromagnetic insulator nearly degenerate with a spin liquid for the …
Recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements discovered remarkable electronic inhomogeneity, i.e. nano-scale spatial variations of the local density of states (LDOS) and the superconducting energy gap, in the high-Tc superconductor BSCCO. Based on the experimental findings we conjectured that the inhomogeneity arises from variations in local oxygen doping level and may be generic of doped Mott insulators which behave rather unconventionally in screening the dopant ionic potentials at atomic scales comparable to the short coherence length. Here, we provide theoretical support for thi…
Recent theoretical understanding of the vortex phase diagram in real layered type II superconductors is briefly described in both cases with fields perpendicular (B \parallel c) and parallel (B \perp c) to the superconducting layers. The description is based on a high field approximation of the Lawrence-Doniach model and on a vortex-glass ordering in each case. It is argued that, generically, the familiar thermal first order transition at B_m(T) occurs between the vortex liquid region and the so-called vortex slush region, and that, in systems with stronger fluctuation, most of the thermal fir…
We investigate the proximity effect in a heterostructure of the topological insulator (TI) \BiSe\ deposited on the HTSC material BSCCO. The latter is described by the one-band Hubbard model and is treated with cluster dynamical mean field theory (CDMFT), the TI layers being included via the CDMFT self-consistency loop. The penetration of superconductivity into the TI depends on the position of the Fermi level with respect to the TI gap. We illustrate the back action of the TI layer on the HTSC layer, in particular the gradual disappearance of Mott physics with increasing tunneling amplitude.
In correlated electrons system, quantum melting of electronic crystalline phase often gives rise to many novel electronic phases. In cuprates superconductors, melting the Mott insulating phase with carrier doping leads to a quantum version of liquid crystal phase, the electronic nematicity, which breaks the rotational symmetry and exhibits a tight twist with high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, the electronic nematicity has also been observed in Fe-based superconductors. However, whether it shares a similar scenario with its cuprates counterpart is still elusive. Here, by measuring nu…
We describe the localization transition of superfluids on two-dimensional lattices into commensurate Mott insulators with average particle density p/q (p, q relatively prime integers) per lattice site. For bosons on the square lattice, we argue that the superfluid has at least q degenerate species of vortices which transform under a projective representation of the square lattice space group (a PSG). The formation of a single vortex condensate produces the Mott insulator, which is required by the PSG to have density wave order at wavelengths of q/n lattice sites (n integer) along the principle…
It is widely believed that high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates emerges from doped Mott insulators. The physics of the parent state seems deceivingly simple: The hopping of the electrons from site to site is prohibited because their on-site Coulomb repulsion U is larger than the kinetic energy gain t. When doping these materials by inserting a small percentage of extra carriers, the electrons become mobile but the strong correlations from the Mott state are thought to survive; inhomogeneous electronic order, a mysterious pseudogap and, eventually, superconductivity appear. How th…
The work reported in my doctoral thesis is an experimental study of vortex dynamics and phase transitions in thin films of type II superconductors using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, low frequency ac susceptibility measurements and complimentary transport measurements. Chapter I and II cover basics of superconductivity and methodologies used in the thesis. Chapter III discusses the effect of periodic pinning centers on the geometry and dynamics of vortex lattice in NbN thin films. Consequent study of dynamic transition of vortex Mott-like to vortex metal-like state is described. In Chapter …
We study by the Gutzwiller approximation the melting of the valence bond crystal phase of a bilayer Hubbard model at sufficiently large inter-layer hopping. We find that a superconducting domain, with order parameter $d_{z^2-r^2}$, $z$ being the inter-layer direction and $r$ the intra-layer one, is stabilized variationally close to the half-filled non-magnetic Mott insulator. Superconductivity exists at half-filling just at the border of the Mott transition and extends away from half-filling into a whole region till a critical doping, beyond which it gives way to a normal metal phase. This res…
In this paper we introduce an exactly solvable Kondo lattice model without any fine-tuning local gauge symmetry. This model describes itinerant electrons interplaying with a localized magnetic moment via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Its solvability results from conservation of the localized moment at each site, and is valid for arbitrary lattice geometry and electron filling. A case study on square lattice shows that the ground state is a Néel antiferromagnetic insulator at half-filling. At finite temperature, paramagnetic phases including a Mott insulator and correlated metal are found. …
