It is well known that in a generally covariant gravitational theory the choice of spacetime scalars as coordinates yields phase-space observables (or "invariants"). However their relation to the symmetry group of diffeomorphism transformations has remained obscure. In a symmetry-inspired approach we construct invariants out of canonically induced active gauge transformations. These invariants may be intepreted as the full set of dynamical variables evaluated in the intrinsic coordinate system. The functional invariants can explicitly be written as a Taylor expansion in the coordinates of any observer, and the coefficients have a physical and geometrical interpretation. Surprisingly, all invariants can be obtained as limits of a family of canonical transformations. This permits a short (again geometric) proof that all invariants, including the lapse and shift, satisfy Poisson brackets that are equal to the invariants of their corresponding Dirac brackets.
Based on a recent paper by Rothe and Schäfer on compact binary systems, explicit expressions for canonical center and relative coordinates in terms of standard canonical coordinates are derived for spinless objects up to second post-Newtonian approximation of Einstein's theory of gravity. The inverse relations, i.e. the dependence of the standard canonical coordinates on the canonical center and relative coordinates, are also given up to the second post-Newtonian approximation. The famous Pythagorean-theorem-type Lorentz-invariant relation between the system's total energy or Hamiltonian squar…
We derive a transformation from the usual ADM metric-extrinsic curvature variables on the phase space of Schwarzschild black holes, to new canonical variables which have the interpretation of Kruskal coordinates. We explicitly show that this transformation is non-singular, even at the horizon. The constraints of the theory simplify in terms of the new canonical variables and are equivalent to the vanishing of the canonical momenta. Our work is based on earlier seminal work by Kuchar in which he reconstructed curvature coordinates and a mass function from spherically symmetric canonical data. T…
Under an appropriate change of the perturbation variable Lifshitz-Khalatnikov propagation equations for the scalar perturbation reduce to d'Alembert equation. The change of variables is based on the Darboux transform.
In order to achieve a Hamiltonian-based canonical derivation of the Hawking effect, one usually faces multiple hurdles. Firstly, the spacetime foliation using Schwarzschild time does not lead to hyper-surfaces which are always spacelike. Secondly, the null coordinates which are frequently used in covariant approach, do not lead to a true matter Hamiltonian. Recently, an exact canonical derivation was presented using the so-called near-null coordinates. However, there too one faces the difficulty of having to deal with non-vanishing matter diffeomorphism generator as the spatial decomposition i…
We investigate the implications of intrinsic time deparameterization on the phase space of the connection representation of canonical gravity in the form of the Ashtekar variables. We find that, much like the metric representation of this formalism, the Hamiltonian constraint now becomes a physical Hamiltonian generating evolution with respect to an intrinsic time. The complete observables for the theory are then constructed. Also, the dynamics in this formulation is cast into a classical master constraint theory.
The conservative dynamics of two point masses given in harmonic coordinates up to the third post-Newtonian (3pN) order is treated within the framework of constrained canonical dynamics. A representation of the approximate Poincaré algebra is constructed with the aid of Dirac brackets. Uniqueness of the generators of the Poincaré group resp. the integrals of motion is achieved by imposing their action on the point mass coordinates to be identical with that of the usual infinitesimal Poincaré transformations. The second post-Coulombian approximation to the dynamics of two point charges as predic…

A canonical quantisation of the coordinates of the spacetime within the general relativity theory is proposed. This quantisation will depend on the observer but it provides an interesting perspective on the problem of relating the non-relativistic and classical limits of a possible quantum gravity theory. In this sense, within this formalism, it is possible to recover from the quantum equation satisfied by a test field the classical geodesics of the corresponding spacetime. On the other hand, the Schrödinger equation is recovered in the Newtonian limit. A key ingredient for this procedure is a…
The recently constructed Hamiltonians for spinless binary black holes through third post-Newtonian order and for spinning ones through formal second post-Newtonian order, where the spins are counted of zero post-Newtonian order, are transformed into fully canonical center-of-mass and rest-frame variables. The mixture terms in the Hamiltonians between center-of-mass and rest-frame variables are in accordance with the relation between the total linear momentum and the center-of-mass velocity as demanded by global Lorentz invariance. The various generating functions for the center-of-mass and res…
We use the canonical formalism developed together with David Robinson to st= udy the Einstein equations on a null surface. Coordinate and gauge conditions = are introduced to fix the triad and the coordinates on the null surface. Toget= her with the previously found constraints, these form a sufficient number of second class constraints so that the phase space is reduced to one pair of canonically conjugate variables: $\Ac_2\and\Sc^2$. The formalism is related to both the Bondi-Sachs and the Newman-Penrose methods of studying the gravitational field at null infinity. Asymptotic solutions in th…
The Hawking effect is one of the most extensively studied topics in modern physics. Yet it remains relatively under-explored within the framework of canonical quantization. The key difficulty lies in the fact that the Hawking effect is principally understood using the relation between the ingoing modes which leave past null infinity and the outgoing modes which arrive at future null infinity. Naturally, these modes are described using advanced and retarded null coordinates instead of the usual Schwarzschild coordinates. However, null coordinates do not lead to a true Hamiltonian that describes…
P.A.M. Dirac had stated that the Cartesian coordinates are uniquely suited for expressing the canonical commutation relations in a simple form. By contrast, expressing these commutation relations in any other coordinate system is more complicated and less obvious. The question that we address in this work, is the reason why this is true. We claim that this unique role of the Cartesian coordinates is a result of the existence and uniqueness of the Hofer metric on the space of canonical transformations of the phase space of the system getting quantized.
It is shown that the calculation of Dirac operator for the spherical coordinate system with spherical Dirac matrices and using the spin connection formalism is in the contradiction with the definition of standard Dirac operator in the spherical Minkowski coordinate system. It is shown that such contradiction one can avoid by introducing a canonical conjugated covariant derivative for the spinor field. The Dirac equation solution on the Reissner - Nordström background is obtained. The solution describes a bound state of a charged particle.
The spin-curvature coupling as captured by the so-called Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations is the leading order effect of the finite size of a rapidly rotating compact astrophysical object moving in a curved background. It is also a next-to-leading order effect in the phase of gravitational waves emitted by extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), which are expected to become observable by the LISA space mission. Additionally, exploring the Hamiltonian formalism for spinning bodies is important for the construction of the so-called Effective-One-Body waveform models that should eventuall…
We generalize the 1+1-dimensional gravity formalism of Ohta and Mann to 3+1 dimensions by developing the canonical reduction of a proposed formalism applied to a system coupled with a set of point particles. This is done via the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner method and by eliminating the resulting constraints and imposing coordinate conditions. The reduced Hamiltonian is completely determined in terms of the particles' canonical variables (coordinates, dilaton field and momenta). It is found that the equation governing the dilaton field under suitable gauge and coordinate conditions, including the abs…
Classical background independence is reflected in Lagrangian general relativity through covariance under the full diffeomorphism group. We show how this independence can be maintained in a Hamilton-Jacobi approach that does not accord special privilege to any geometric structure. Intrinsic spacetime curvature based coordinates grant equal status to all geometric backgrounds. They play an essential role as a starting point for inequivalent semi-classical quantizations. The scheme calls into question Wheeler's geometrodynamical approach and the associated Wheeler-DeWitt equation in which three-m…
The Newman-Penrose equations for spacetimes having one spacelike Killing vector are reduced -- in a geometrically defined "canonical frame'' -- to a minimal set, and its differential structure is studied. Expressions for the frame vectors in an arbitrary coordinate basis are given, and coordinate-independent choices of the metric functions are suggested which make the components of the Ricci tensor in the direction of the Killing vector vanish.
Einstein's general relativity with both metric and vielbein treated as independent fields is considered, demonstrating the existence of a consistent variational principle and deriving a Hamiltonian formalism that treats the spatial metric and spatial vielbein as canonical coordinates. This results in a Hamiltonian in standard form that consists of Hamiltonian and momentum constraints as well as constraints that generate spatial frame transformations---all appearing as primary, first class constraints on phase space. The formalism encompasses the standard coordinate frame and vielbein approache…
The coupling of the metric to an incoherent dust introduces into spacetime a privileged dynamical reference frame and time foliation. The comoving coordinates of the dust particles and the proper time along the dust worldlines become canonical coordinates in the phase space of the system. The Hamiltonian constraint can be resolved with respect to the momentum that is canonically conjugate to the dust time. Imposition of the resolved constraint as an operator restriction on the quantum states yields a functional Schrödinger equation. The ensuing Hamiltonian density has an extraordinary feature:…
The linearized Kerr metric is considered and put in some Gauss coordinates which are further {\em intrinsic} ones. The linear and angular 4-momenta of this metric are calculated in these coordinates and the resulting value is just zero. Thus, the global vanishing previously found for the Schwarzschild metric remains linearly stable under slow rotational perturbations of this metric.
We develop the formalism for canonical reduction of $(1+1)$--dimensional gravity coupled with a set of point particles by eliminating constraints and imposing coordinate conditions. The formalism itself is quite analogous to the $(3+1)$--dimensional case; however in $(1+1)$ dimensions an auxiliary scalar field is shown to have an important role. The reduced Hamiltonian is expressed as a form of spatial integral of the second derivative of the scalar field. Since in $(1+1)$ dimensions there exists no dynamical degree of freedom of the gravitational field ({\it i.e.} the transverse-traceless par…
The connection is established between two different action principles for perfect fluids in the context of general relativity. For one of these actions, $S$, the fluid four--velocity is expressed as a sum of products of scalar fields and their gradients (the velocity--potential representation). For the other action, ${\bar S}$, the fluid four--velocity is proportional to the totally antisymmetric product of gradients of the fluid Lagrangian coordinates. The relationship between $S$ and ${\bar S}$ is established by expressing $S$ in Hamiltonian form and identifying certain canonical coordinates…
We present a derivation of Hawking radiation based on canonical quantization of a massless scalar field in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole using Lemaitre coordinates and show that in these coordinates the Hamiltonian of the massless field is time-dependent. This result exhibits the non-static nature of the problem and shows it is better to talk about the time dependence of physical quantities rather than the existence of a time-independent vacuum state for the massless field. We then demonstrate the existence of Hawking radiation and show that despite the fact that the flux looks …
The curvature coordinates $T,R$ of a Schwarz\-schild spacetime are turned into canonical coordinates $T(r), {\sf R}(r)$ on the phase space of spherically symmetric black holes. The entire dynamical content of the Hamiltonian theory is reduced to the constraints requiring that the momenta $P_{T}(r), P_{\sf R}(r)$ vanish. What remains is a conjugate pair of canonical variables $m$ and $p$ whose values are the same on every embedding. The coordinate $m$ is the Schwarzschild mass, and the momentum $p$ the difference of parametrization times at right and left infinities. The Dirac constraint quanti…
We discuss the canonical structure of a spacetime version of the radial gauge, i.e. Gaußian normal spacetime coordinates. While it was found for the spatial version of the radial gauge that a "local" algebra of observables can be constructed, it turns out that this is not possible for the spacetime version. The technical reason for this observation is that the new gauge condition needed to upgrade the spatial to a spacetime radial gauge does not Poisson-commute with the previous gauge conditions. It follows that the involved Dirac bracket is inherently non-local in the sense that no complete s…
Correct identification of the true gauge symmetry of General Relativity being 3d spatial diffeomorphism invariant(3dDI) (not the conventional infinite tensor product group with principle fibre bundle structure), together with intrinsic time extracted from clean decomposition of the canonical structure yields a self-consistent theory of quantum gravity. A new set of fundamental commutation relations is also presented. The basic variables are the eight components of the unimodular part of the spatial dreibein and eight SU(3) generators which correspond to Klauder's momentric variables that chara…
