We have recently presented an investigation in full general relativity of the dynamics and gravitational-wave emission from binary neutron stars which inspiral and merge, producing a black hole surrounded by a torus (see arXiv:0804.0594). We here discuss in more detail the convergence properties of the results presented in arXiv:0804.0594 and, in particular, the deterioration of the convergence rate at the merger and during the survival of the merged object, when strong shocks are formed and turbulence develops. We also show that physically reasonable and numerically convergent results obtained at low-resolution suffer however from large truncation errors and hence are of little physical use. We summarize our findings in an "error budget", which includes the different sources of possible inaccuracies we have investigated and provides a first quantitative assessment of the precision in the modelling of compact fluid binaries.
Emission of anisotropic gravitational radiation from compact binary system leads to a flux of linear momentum. This results in the recoil of the system. We investigate the rate of loss of Linear momentum flux in the far zone of the source using various mass type and current type multipole moments for inspiralling compact binary mergers in quasi-elliptical orbits at 2.5 Post Newtonian order. We compute the linear momentum flux accurate up to $\mathcal{O}(e_t)$ in harmonic coordinate. A 2.5 Post Newtonian Quasi-Keplarian representation of the parametric solution to the Post Newtonian equation of…
Neutron star (NS) binaries formed dynamically may have significant eccentricities while emitting gravitational waves (GWs) in the LIGO/VIRGO band. We study tidal effects in such eccentric inspiralling NS binaries using a set of hybrid equations. The NS is modelled as a compressible ellipsoid, which can deform nonlinearly due to tidal forces, while the orbit evolution is treated with the post-Newtonian (PN) theory up to 2.5-PN order. We find that in general, the tidal interaction can accelerate the inspiral, and cause orbital frequency and phase shifts. For circular inspirals, our calculations …
Gravitational waves from compact binaries inspiralling along post-Newtonian accurate eccentric orbits: Data analysis implications
R. Iyer,Phys. Rev. \textbf{70},064028(2004)]。 R.伊耶角A. K. Robinson和B. R. Iyer,Phys. Rev. D \textbf{70},064028(2004)],以及在[R.-R. M. Memmesheimer,A. Gopakumar和G. Schäfer,Phys. Rev. D \textbf{70},104011(2004)]。
In this work we complete the spin-dependent conservative dynamics of inspiralling compact binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian order, and in particular the derivation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential. We derive the physical equations of motion of the position and the spin from a direct variation of the action. Further, we derive the quadratic-in-spin Hamiltonians, as well as their expressions in the center-of-mass frame. We construct the conserved integrals of motion, which form the Poincaré algebra. This construction provided a consistency check for the…
Gravitational waves (GWs) from merging black holes allow for unprecedented probes of strong-field gravity. Testing gravity in this regime requires accurate predictions of gravitational waveform templates in viable extensions of General Relativity. We concentrate on scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity, one of the most compelling classes of theories appearing as low-energy limit of quantum gravity paradigms, which introduces quadratic curvature corrections to gravity coupled to a scalar field and allows for black hole solutions with scalar-charge. Focusing on inspiralling black hole binaries, we compute…
Self-interaction spin effects in inspiralling compact binaries
Tidal effects in gravitational-wave (GW) observations from binary neutron star mergers have the potential to probe ultra-dense matter and shed light on the unknown nuclear equation of state of neutron stars. Tidal effects in inspiralling neutron star binaries become relevant at GW frequencies of a few hundred Hz and require detectors with exquisite high-frequency sensitivity. Third generation GW detectors such as the Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer will be particularly sensitive in this high-frequency regime, allowing us to probe neutron star tides beyond the adiabatic approximation. Her…

We compare recently computed waveforms from second-order gravitational self-force (GSF) theory to those generated by a new, GSF-informed, effective one body (EOB) waveform model for (spin-aligned, eccentric) inspiralling black hole binaries with large mass ratios. We focus on quasi-circular, nonspinning, configurations and perform detailed GSF/EOB waveform phasing comparisons, either in the time domain or via the gauge-invariant dimensionless function $Q_ω\equiv ω^2/\dotω$, where $ω$ is the gravitational wave frequency. The inclusion of high-PN test-mass terms within the EOB radiation reaction…
