We present a multi-wavlength infrared study of the nearby, edge-on, spiral galaxy NGC 891. We have examined 20 independent, spatially resolved IR images of this galaxy, 14 of which are newly reduced and/or previously unpublished images. These images span a wavelength regime from 1.2 microns in which the emission is dominated by cool stars, through the MIR, in which emission is dominated by PAHs, to 850 microns, in which emission is dominated by cold dust in thermal equilibrium with the radiation field. The changing morphology of the galaxy with wavelength illustrates the changing dominant components. We detect extra-planar dust emission in this galaxy, consistent with previously published results, but now show that PAH emission is also in the halo, to a vertical distance of z >= 2.5 kpc. We compare the vertical extents of various components and find that the PAHs (from 7.7 and 8 micron data) and warm dust (24 microns) extend to smaller z heights than the cool dust (450 microns). For six locations in the galaxy for which the S/N was sufficient, we present SEDs of the IR emission, including two in the halo - the first time a halo SED in an external galaxy has been presented. We have modeled these SEDs and find that the PAH fraction is similar to Galactic values (within a factor of two), with the lowest value at the galaxy's center, consistent with independent results of other galaxies. In the halo environment, the fraction of dust exposed to a colder radiation field, is of order unity, consistent with an environment in which there is no star formation. The source of excitation is likely from photons escaping from the disk.
We present integral field spectroscopy in the near infrared of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxies NGC 3125-A and of the low metallicity dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. The use of adaptive optics in the observations produces sub-arcsecond angular resolution. We pinpoint the star forming cores of both galaxies, identify relevant ISM components such as dust, photo ionized gas, shock excited gas and molecular gas. We relate these components to the large scale star formation process of the galaxies. In particular we find the emission of the near infrared lines of H2 and especially [FeII] does not coinc…
We use the photoionisation and dust radiative transfer code MOCASSIN to create a model of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 4449. The best-matching model reproduces the global optical emission line fluxes and the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) spanning wavelengths from the UV to sub-mm, and requires the bolometric luminosity of 6.25e9 Lsolar for the underlying stellar component, M_d/M_g of 1/680 and M_d of 2.2e6 Msolar.
We present a detailed analysis of high resolution H I observations of the Magellanic spiral galaxies NGC 4618 and NGC 4625. While the H I disk of NGC 4625 is remarkably quiescent with a nearly uniform velocity dispersion and no evidence of H I holes, there is a dynamic interplay between star formation and the distribution of neutral hydrogen in NGC 4618. We calculate the critical density for widespread star formation in each galaxy and find that star formation proceeds even where the surface density of the atomic gas is well below the critical density necessary for global star formation. There…
Infrared pumping and its effect on the excitation of HCN molecules can be important when using rotational lines of HCN to probe dense molecular gas in galaxy nuclei. We report the first extragalactic detection of (sub)millimeter rotational lines of vibrationally excited HCN, in the dust-enshrouded nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 4418. We estimate the excitation temperature of T_vib ~ 230 K between the vibrational ground and excited (v_2=1) states. This excitation is most likely due to infrared radiation. At this high vibrational temperature the path through the v_2=1 state must hav…
We have obtained deep near-infrared images in J and K filters of four fields in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 247 with the ESO VLT and ISAAC camera. For a sample of ten Cepheids in these fields, previously discovered by Garc{í}a-Varela et al. from optical wide-field images, we have determined mean J and K magnitudes and have constructed the period-luminosity (PL) relations in these bands. Using the near-infrared PL relations together with those in the optical V and I bands, we have determined a true distance modulus for NGC 247 of 27.64 mag, with a random uncertainty of $\pm$2% and a sy…
Large-scale bars and minor mergers are important drivers for the secular evolution of galaxies. Based on ground-based optical images and spectra as well as ultraviolet data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we present a multi-wavelength study of star formation properties in the barred galaxy NGC 7479, which also has obvious features of a minor merger. Using various tracers of star formation, we find that under the effects of both a stellar bar and a minor merger, star formation activity mainly takes place along the galactic bar and arms, whi…
We present new far-infrared (70-500micron) Herschel PACS and SPIRE imaging observations as well as new mid-IR Gemini/T-ReCS imaging (8.7 and 18.3micron) and spectroscopy of the inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) region (R<2.5kpc) of the spiral galaxy NGC1365. We complemented these observations with archival Spitzer imaging and spectral mapping observations. The ILR region of NGC1365 contains a Seyfert 1.5 nucleus and a ring of star formation with an approximate diameter of 2kpc. The strong star formation activity in the ring is resolved by the Herschel/PACS imaging data, as well as by the Spitzer …
We discuss two-dimensional mapping of the near-infrared emission-line intensity distributions and kinematics of the narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 4151, obtained with the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph, with a projected spatial resolution of ~8pc. The ionized gas intensity distribution follows the projected bi-cone morphology observed in previous optical narrow-band images, and its kinematics reveal outflows along the bi-cone. We propose a kinematic model in which the gas in the NLR moves at a velocity of ~600 km s^-1 up to ~100 pc from the nucleus. A completely distinct mor…
We present a study of ionized gas, PAHs, and molecular hydrogen emission in the halos of three edge-on galaxies, NGC 891, NGC 5775 and NGC 3044, based on 10-20 micron Spitzer Space Telescope spectra. The [Ne III]/[Ne II] ratio, an excellent measure of radiation hardness, rises with z in the halo of NGC 891. It is also higher in the halo of NGC 5775 than in the disk. NGC 3044 presents a more confusing situation. To explain the [Ne III]/[Ne II] as well as optical line ratio behavior in NGC 891, we carry out a simple exploration of parameter space with CLOUDY, which indicates a large increase in …
We present {\it Gemini} longslit optical spectroscopy and VLA radio observations of the nuclear region of NGC 4178, a late-type bulgeless disk galaxy recently confirmed to host an AGN through infrared and X-ray observations. Our observations reveal that the dynamical center of the galaxy is coincident with the location of the {\it Chandra} X-ray point source discovered in a previous work, providing further support for the presence of an AGN. While the X-ray and IR observations provide robust evidence for an AGN, the optical spectrum shows no evidence for the AGN, underscoring the need for the …
We performed observations of NGC1569 for 6 infrared bands (3.2, 4.1, 7, 11, 15, and 24 micron) with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. Near- to mid-infrared (2--13 micron) spectroscopy of a Halpha filament was also carried out with the IRC. The extended structure associated with a Halpha filament appears bright at 7 micron, suggesting that the filament is bright at the UIR band emission. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with the IRC confirm the presence of 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 micron emission in the filament. The filament spectrum exhibits strong 11.3 micron UIR band emission relative …
We use the near--infrared Brγhydrogen recombination line as a reference star formation rate (SFR) indicator to test the validity and establish the calibration of the {\it Herschel} PACS 70 μm emission as a SFR tracer for sub--galactic regions in external galaxies. Brγoffers the double advantage of directly tracing ionizing photons and of being relatively insensitive to the effects of dust attenuation. For our first experiment, we use archival CFHT Brγand Ks images of two nearby galaxies: NGC\,5055 and NGC\,6946, which are also part of the {\it Herschel} program KINGFISH (Key Insights on Nearby…
We combine new ASTE/AzTEC 1.1 mm maps of the galaxy pair NGC 1512/1510 with archival Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images covering the wavelength range 3.6--160 um from the SINGS project to derive accurate dust masses in each galaxy, and in sub--galactic regions in NGC 1512. The two galaxies form a pair consisting of a large, high--metallicity spiral (NGC 1512) and a low metallicity, blue compact dwarf (NGC 1510). The derived total dust masses are (2.4+/-0.6) 10^7 Msun and (1.7+/-3.6) 10^5 Msun for NGC 1512 and NGC 1510, respectively. The derived ratio of dust mass to H I gas mass for the galaxy pair …
We combined new near-infrared VLT/HAWK-I data of the globular clusters (GCs) in the isolated edge-on S0 galaxy NGC 3115 with optical and spectroscopic ones taken from the literature, with the aim of analyzing the multiband GC color distributions. A recent study from the SLUGGS survey has shown that the GCs in this galaxy follow a bimodal distribution of Ca II triplet indices. Thus, NGC 3115 presents a critical example of a GC system with multiple, distinct, metallicity subpopulations, and this may argue against the "projection" scenario, which posits that the ubiquitous color bimodality mainly…
We report the detection of a heavily obscured Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 6286, identified in a 17.5 ks NuSTAR observation. The source is in an early merging stage, and was targeted as part of our ongoing NuSTAR campaign observing local luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies in different merger stages. NGC 6286 is clearly detected above 10 keV and, by including the quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and archival XMM-Newton and Chandra data, we find that the source is heavily obscured [$N_{\rm\,H}\simeq (0.95-1.32)\times 10^{24}\rm\,cm^{-2}$], with …
The Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC1614 hosts a prominent circumnuclear ring of star formation. However, the nature of the dominant emitting mechanism in its central ~100 pc is still under debate. We present sub-arcsecond angular resolution radio, mid-infrared, Pa-alpha, optical, and X-ray observations of NGC1614, aimed at studying in detail both the circumnuclear ring and the nuclear region. The 8.4 GHz continuum emission traced by the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Gemini/T-ReCS 8.7 micron emission, as well as the Pa-alpha line emission, show remarkable morphological similarities within the sta…
We investigated the distribution of resolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars over a much larger area than covered by previous near-infrared studies in the nearby dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 205. Using data obtained with the WIRCam near-infrared imager of the CFHT, we selected the AGB stars in the JHKs color-magnitude diagrams, and separated the C stars from M-giant stars in the JHKs color-color diagram. We identified 1,550 C stars in NGC 205 with a mean absolute magnitude of M_Ks = -7.49 \pm 0.54, and colors of (J - Ks) = 1.81 \pm 0.41 and (H - Ks) = 0.76 \pm 0.24. The ratio of C stars to …
We present the results of an infrared photometric survey performed with NICS@TNG in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4214. We derived accurate integrated JK magnitudes of 10 young massive clusters and compared them with the already available Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet colors. These clusters are located in the combined ultraviolet-infrared colors planes on well defined sequences, whose shapes allow a precise determination of their age. By means of the comparison with suitable stellar evolution models we estimated ages, metallicities, reddening and masses of these clusters. All the analyz…
We report the discovery of diffuse far-infrared and far-ultraviolet emission projected near the interacting pair NGC4435/4438, in the Virgo cluster. This feature spatially coincides with a well known low surface-brightness optical plume, usually interpreted as tidal debris. If extragalactic, this stream would represent not only one of the clearest examples of intracluster dust, but also a rare case of intracluster molecular hydrogen and large-scale intracluster star formation. However, the ultraviolet, far-infrared, HI and CO emission as well as the dynamics of this feature are extremely unusu…
We present results from a study of the Supernova Remnant (SNR) population in a sample of six nearby galaxies (NGC 2403, NGC 3077, NGC 4214, NGC 4449, NGC 4395 and NGC 5204) based on Chandra archival data. We have detected 244 discrete X-ray sources down to a limiting flux of 10^{-15} erg/s. We identify 37 X-ray selected thermal SNRs based on their X-ray colors or spectra, 30 of which are new discoveries. In many cases the X-ray classification is confirmed based on counterparts with SNRs identified in other wavelengths. Three of the galaxies in our sample (NGC 4214, NGC 4395 and NGC 5204) are s…
We present year-long, near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 observations of Mira variables in the water megamaser host galaxy NGC 4258. Miras are AGB variables that can be divided into oxygen- (O-) and carbon- (C-) rich subclasses. Oxygen-rich Miras follow a tight (scatter $\sim 0.14$ mag) Period-Luminosity Relation (PLR) in the near-infrared and can be used to measure extragalactic distances. The water megamaser in NGC 4258 gives a geometric distance to the galaxy accurate to 2.6% that can serve to calibrate the Mira PLR. We develop criteria for detecting and classifying O-rich Miras with…
We present near infrared (NIR) IRTF/SpeX spectra of the intermediate-age galaxy M32 and the post-starburst galaxy NGC 5102. We show that features from thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) and main sequence turn-off (MSTO) stars yield similar ages to those derived from optical spectra. The TP-AGB can dominate the NIR flux of a coeval stellar population between ~0.1 and ~2 Gyr, and the strong features of (especially C-rich) TP-AGB stars are useful chronometers in integrated light studies. Likewise, the Paschen series in MSTO stars is stongly dependent on age and is an indicator of …
