We study the effects of including one-loop radiative corrections in a non-supersymmetric hybrid inflationary model. These corrections can arise from Yukawa couplings between the inflaton and right-handed neutrinos, and induce a maximum in the potential which admits hilltop-type solutions in addition to the standard hybrid solutions. We obtain a red-tilted spectral index $n_s$, consistent with WMAP5 data, for sub-Planckian values of the field. This is in contrast to the tree level hybrid analysis, in which a red-tilted spectrum is achieved only for trans-Planckian values of the field. Successful reheating is obtained at the end of the inflationary phase via conversion of the inflaton and waterfall fields into right-handed neutrinos, whose subsequent decay can explain the observed baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis.
Natural supergravity models of new inflation are reconsidered as minimal inflationary models within slow-roll approximation. Their running spectral index is derived in a revised form with recent observational results and future refinements in mind. This will possibly determine essential model parameters with respect to Planck-suppressed operators.
We update the constraints on the power spectra of primordial curvature perturbation and tensor perturbation including Planck data 2015 (P15) and recently released BICEP2/Keck data (BK15), Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data and the Type Ia supernovae data. We find that the upper limits of tensor-to-scalar ratio are $0.061$, $0.064$ and $0.072$ at $95\%$ confidence level (CL) in the $Λ$CDM+$r$, $Λ$CDM+$r$+$α_s$ and $Λ$CDM+$r$+$α_s$+$β_s$ models respectively, where $α_s$ and $β_s$ are the running of scalar spectral index and running of running. The inflation model with a concave potential is favore…
We revisit a polynomial chaotic inflation model in supergravity which we proposed soon after the Planck first data release. Recently some issues have been raised in Ref.[12], concerning the validity of our polynomial chaotic inflation model. We study the inflaton dynamics in detail, and confirm that the inflaton potential is very well approximated by a polynomial potential for the parameters of our interest in any practical sense, and in particular, the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be estimated by single-field approximation. This justifies our analysis of the polynomial ch…
We consider an extension of nuMSSM with an extra U(1) that realizes D-term inflation driven by the right-handed sneutrino. Non-renormalizable terms in the Kahler potential and the superpotential are considered, the latter controlled by a suitable discrete R-symmetry. We find that, for subplanckian inflaton values, the predictions of inflationary parameters are compatible with observations, establishing the right-handed sneutrino driven inflation as a viable scenario.
It is generally believed that in single-field slow-roll inflation, a large tensor-to-scalar ratio $r > 0.1$ requires inflaton field values close to or above the Planck scale. Recently, it has been claimed that $r > 0.15$ can be achieved with much smaller inflaton field values $Δϕ< M_{Pl}/10$. We show that in single-field slow-roll inflation, it is impossible to reconcile $r > 0.1$ with such small field values, independently of the form of the potential, and that the recent claim to the contrary is based on an invalid approximation. We conclude that the result of the BICEP2 measurement of $r > …
We revisit large field inflation models with modulations in light of the recent discovery of the primordial B-mode polarization by the BICEP2 experiment, which, when combined with the Planck + WP + highL data, gives a strong hint for additional suppression of the CMB temperature fluctuations at small scales. Such a suppression can be explained by a running spectral index. In fact, it was pointed out by two of the present authors (TK and FT) that the existence of both tensor mode perturbations and a sizable running of the spectral index is a natural outcome of large inflation models with modula…
In this work, we revisit the perturbations that are generated in the bounce inflation scenario constructed within the framework of $f(T)$ theory. It has been well known that pure $f(T)$ theory cannot give rise to bounce inflation behavior, so aside from the gravity part, we also employ a canonical scalar field for minimal extension. We calculate the perturbations in $f(T)$ theory using the well-established ADM formalism, and find various conditions to avoid their pathologies. We find that it is indeed very difficult to obtain a healthy model without those pathologies, however, one may find a w…
In its simplest form the curvaton paradigm requires the Hubble parameter during inflation to be bigger than $10^8 \GeV$, but this bound may be evaded in non-standard settings. In the heavy curvaton scenario the curvaton mass increases significantly after the end of inflation. We reanalyze the bound in this set up, taking into account the upper bound on the curvaton mass from direct decay. We obtain $H_* > 10^8 \GeV$ if the mass increase occurs at the end of inflation, and $H_* > 10^{-14} \GeV$ if it occurs just before nucleosynthesis. We then discuss two implementations of the heavy curvaton. …
We study the structure of two-point correlators of the inflationary field fluctuations in order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the existing methods to calculate primordial spectra. We present a description motivated by the separation of the fast and slow evolving components of the spectrum which is based on Cholesky decomposition of the field correlator matrix. Our purpose is to rewrite all the relevant equations of motion in terms of slowly varying quantities. This is important in order to consider the contribution from high-frequency modes to the spectrum without affecting computa…
We revisit gravitino production following inflation. As a first step, we review the standard calculation of gravitino production in the thermal plasma formed at the end of post-inflationary reheating when the inflaton has completely decayed. Next we consider gravitino production prior to the completion of reheating, assuming that the inflaton decay products thermalize instantaneously while they are still dilute. We then argue that instantaneous thermalization is in general a good approximation, and also show that the contribution of non-thermal gravitino production via the collisions of inflat…
We consider an inflationary universe model in which the phase of accelerated expansion was preceded by a non-singular bounce and a period of contraction which involves a phase of deceleration. We follow fluctuations which exit the Hubble radius in the radiation-dominated contracting phase as quantum vacuum fluctuations, re-enter the Hubble radius in the deflationary period and re-cross during the phase of inflationary expansion. Evolving the fluctuations using the general relativistic linear perturbation equations, we find that they exit the Hubble radius during inflation not with a scale-inva…
It has recently been suggested that Planck scale physics may effect the evolution of cosmological fluctuations in the early stages of cosmological inflation in a non-trivial way, leading to an excited state for modes whose wavelength is super-Planck but sub-Hubble. In this case, the issue of how this excited state back-reacts on the background space-time arises. In fact, it has been suggested that such back-reaction effects may lead to tight constraints on the magnitude of possible deviations from the usual predictions of inflation. In this note we discuss some subtle aspects of this back-reac…

We revisit the no-scale ripple inflation model, where no-scale supergravity is modified by an additional term for the inflaton field in the Kahler potential. This term not only breaks one SU(N,1) symmetry explicitly, but also plays an important role for inflation. We generalize the superpotential in the no-scale ripple inflation model slightly. There exists a discrete Z_2 symmetry/parity in the scalar potential in general, which can be preserved or violated by the non-canonical nomalized inflaton kinetic term. Thus, there are three inflation paths: one parity invariant path, and the left and r…
Imposing that the excursion distance of inflaton in field space during inflation be less than the Planck scale, we derive an upper bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio at the CMB scales, i.e. $r_{*,max}$, in the general canonical single-field slow-roll inflation model, in particular the model with non-negligible running of the spectral index $α_s$ and/or the running of running $β_s$. We find that $r_{*,max}\simeq 7\times 10^{-4}$ for $n_s=0.9645$ without running and running of running, and $r_{*,max}$ is significantly relaxed to the order of ${\cal O}(10^{-2}\sim 10^{-1})$ in the inflation mode…
It is known that supersymmetric hybrid inflation model may require severe tunings on the initial condition for large gravitino mass of order 100 - 1000 TeV due to the constant term in the superpotential. We propose a modified hybrid inflation model, where the constant term is suppressed during inflation and generated after inflation by replacing a constant term with dynamical field. In this modified model, successful inflation consistent with large gravitino mass takes place without severe tunings on the initial condition. Constraint from cosmic strings is also relaxed.
Recent detection of $B$-mode polarization induced from tensor perturbations by the BICEP2 experiment implies so-called large field inflation, where an inflaton field takes super-Planckian expectation value during inflation, at a high energy scale. We show however, if another inflation follows hybrid inflation, the hybrid inflation can generate a large tensor perturbation with not super-Plankian but Planckian field value. This scenario would relax the tension between BICEP2 and Planck concerning the tensor-to-scalar ratio, because a negative large running can also be obtained for a certain numb…
We find that the amplitude of quantum fluctuations of the invariant de Sitter vacuum coincides exactly with that of the vacuum of a comoving observer for a massless scalar (inflaton) field. We propose redefining the actual physical power spectrum as the difference between the amplitudes of the above vacua. An inertial particle detector continues to observe the Gibbons-Hawking temperature. However, although the resulting power spectrum is still scale-free, its amplitude can be drastically reduced since now, instead of the Hubble's scale at the inflationary period, it is determined by the square…
We revisit the constraints on inflation models by using the current cosmological observations involving the latest local measurement of the Hubble constant ($H_{0} = 73.00\pm 1.75$ km s $^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$). We constrain the primordial power spectra of both scalar and tensor perturbations with the observational data including the Planck 2015 CMB full data, the BICEP2 and Keck Array CMB B-mode data, the BAO data, and the direct measurement of $H_0$. In order to relieve the tension between the local determination of the Hubble constant and the other astrophysical observations, we consider the add…
We revisit the hybrid inflation model focusing on the dynamics of the waterfall field in an analytical way. It is shown that inflation may last long enough during the waterfall regime for some parameter regions, confirming the claim of Clesse. In this case the scalar spectral index becomes red, and can fall into the best fit range of the WMAP observation.
We propose an inflationary model ("natural hybrid model"), which combines the supersymmetric hybrid model and the natural inflation model to achieve the spectral index of 0.96, and the axion decay constant smaller than the Planck scale, f<< M_P. By introducing both U(1)_R and a shift symmetry and employing the minimal Kahler potential, the eta-problem can be still avoided. The two inflaton fields in this model can admit large non-Gaussianity.
The pionic coupling constants in the decays of the $1^{-+}$ hybrid meson are calculated. The double Borel transformation is invoked and continuum contribution is subtracted. The decay widths of the processes $1^{-+}\to ρπ, f_1 π, πγ$ are around $40, 100, 0.3$ MeV respectively.

The recent local measurement of the Hubble constant based on the distance-ladder method has reached a $1.91\%$ precision, but this result is in tension with the early-universe measurements at the more than 4$σ$ level, bringing a crisis to the contemporary cosmology. In addition to the end-to-end test of the $Λ$CDM model in the late universe, it is also of great interest to see how the local $H_0$ measurement affects the determination of the primordial power spectra, and further to test the influences for the inflation model selection. Here, we constrain the primordial power spectra of scalar a…
Process of preheating for supersymmetric hybrid model of inflation is generally analyzed in two different ways known as parametric resonance and tachyonic preheating. In a common frame-work, we study both the processes from the decay or growth of homogeneous inflaton field and inhomogeneous waterfall field. We find that these two processes in SUSY hybrid F-term inflation are not parameter independent; rather one process will be more preferable than the other depending on the values of parameters and Fourier mode of the waterfall field. Parameters of the inflationary potential are constrained f…
We identify models of supersymmetric hybrid inflation in which the tensor-to-scalar ratio, a canonical measure of gravity waves produced during inflation, can be as large as 0.03 or so, which will be tested by the Planck satellite experiment. The scalar spectral index lies within the WMAP one sigma bounds, while $|d n_s / d\ln k| \lesssim 0.01$.
A model is presented in which a single scalar field is responsible for both primordial inflation at early times and then dark energy at late times. This field is coupled to a second scalar field which becomes unstable and starts to oscillate after primordial inflation, thus driving a reheating phase that can create a high post-inflation temperature. This model easily avoids overproduction of gravity waves, which is a problem in the original quintessential inflation model in which reheating occurs via gravitational particle production.
We show that the smooth hybrid inflation is naturally realized in a framework of supersymmetric axion model. Identifying the Peccei-Quinn scalar fields as a part of the infaton sector, successful inflation takes place reproducing the amplitude and spectral index of the curvature perturbation observed by WMAP. A relatively large axion isocurvature perturbation and its non-Gaussianity are predicted in our model. The saxion coherent oscillation has a large amplitude and dominates the Universe. The subsequent decay of the saxion produces huge amount of entropy, which dilutes unwanted relics. Winos…
A new scenario of hybrid-like inflation is considered without using hybrid-type potential. Radiation raised continuously by a dissipating inflaton field keeps symmetry restoration in a remote sector, and the false-vacuum energy of the remote sector dominates the energy density during inflation. Remote inflation is terminated when the temperature reaches the critical temperature, or when the slow-roll condition is violated. Without introducing a complex form of couplings, inflaton field may either roll-in (like a standard hybrid inflation) or roll-out (like an inverted-hybrid model or quintesse…
We show that the free light scalar fields that may exist in the inflationary Universe can change the predictions of the hybrid inflation model. Possible signatures are discussed, which can be used to discriminate the sources of the spectrum.
In this work, we consider a hilltop version of the (supersymmetric) sneutrino hybrid inflation where the right-handed sneutrino field plays the role of the inflaton field. This model is a type III hilltop inflation that can produce a spectral index $n_s=0.96$ which fits perfectly to experimental observations without fine-tuning of parameters. We also briefly consider nonthermal leptogenesis via the decay of the right-handed sneutrino inflaton field after inflation.
We consider D-term hybrid inflation in the framework of superconformal supergravity. In part of the parameter space, inflation continues for subcritical inflaton field value. Consequently, a new type of inflation emerges, which gives predictions for the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio that are consistent with the Planck 2015 results. The potential in the subcritical regime is found to have a similar structure to one in the simplest class of superconformal alpha attractors.
We show how supersymmetric hybrid inflation with scalar spectral index $n_{\rm s}\simeq 0.96 - 0.97$ is realized in the context of quasi-minimal supergravity if we insist that the inflationary potential not exhibit any local minima. We also address the problem of the initial conditions for both monotonic and non-monotonic inflationary potentials.
In hybrid inflation, the inflaton generically has a tadpole due to gravitational effects in supergravity, which significantly changes the inflaton dynamics in high-scale supersymmetry. We point out that the tadpole can be cancelled if there is a supersymmetry breaking singlet with gravitational couplings, and in particular, the cancellation is automatic in no-scale supergravity. We consider the LARGE volume scenario as a concrete example and discuss the compatibility between the hybrid inflation and the moduli stabilization. We also point out that the dark radiation generated by the overall vo…
We study the supergravity hybrid inflation model of Ref.[1] in the presence of a modulus field. The eta-problem is solved by a shift symmetry for the inflaton, which protects the inflaton mass even in the presence of the modulus field. Inflation is (nearly) unaffected by moduli stabilization, provided the scale of supersymmetry breaking in the post-inflation vacuum is small. Therefore the model has the nice phenomenology that it combines low scale supersymmetry breaking with high scale (grand unification scale) inflation.
A spontaneously broken global discrete symmetry may have pseudo Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneous breaking of the approximate continuous symmetry of the low dimension terms in the Lagrangian. These provide natural candidates for an inflaton that can generate slow roll inflation. We show that, in the case of a non Abelian discrete symmetry, the pseudo Goldstone modes readily couple to further scalar fields in a manner that the end of inflation is determined by these additional scalar fields, generating hybrid inflation. We give a simple parameterisation of the inflationary potenti…
Motivated by the reported discovery of inflationary gravity waves by the BICEP2 experiment, we propose an inflationary scenario in supergravity, based on the standard superpotential used in hybrid inflation. The new model yields a tensor-to-scalar ratio r ~ 0.14 and scalar spectral index ns ~ 0.964, corresponding to quadratic (chaotic) inflation. The important new ingredients are the high-scale, (1.6-10) x 10^13 GeV, soft supersymmetry breaking mass for the gauge singlet inflaton field and a shift symmetry imposed on the Kähler potential. The end of inflation is accompanied, as in the earlier …
We discuss the waterfall that ends hybrid inflation. Making some simplifying assumptions, that may be satisfied by GUT inflation models, two issues are addressed. First, the procedure of keeping the quantum fluctuation of the waterfall field only in the regime where it can be regarded as classical. Second, the contribution to the primordial curvature perturbation that is generated during the waterfall. Because the waterfall field is heavy during inflation, the spectrum of this contribution is strongly blue and hence is negligible on cosmological scales.
A new scenario of hybrid-like inflation is considered for sneutrino and MSSM fields. Contrary to the usual hybrid inflation model, the direct coupling between a trigger field and the sneutrino/MSSM inflaton field is not necessary for the scenario. The dissipation and the radiation from the sneutrino/MSSM inflaton can be written explicitly by using the Yukawa couplings. Remote inflation does not require the shift symmetry or cancellation in solving the eta-problem.
The inflation model of Gaillard, Lyth and Murayama is revisited, with a systematic scan of the parameter space for dilaton stabilization during inflation.
The axion is one of the best motivated candidates for particle dark matter. We study and update the constraints imposed by the recent CMB and LSS experiments on the mass of axions produced by the misalignment mechanism, as a function of both the inflationary scale and the reheating temperature. Under some particular although not unconventional assumptions, the axionic field induces too large isocurvature perturbations. Specifically, for inflation taking place at intermediate energy scales, we derive some restrictive limits which can only be evaded by assuming an efficient reheating mechanism, …
The decay of massive particles during inflation generates characteristic signals in the squeezed limit of the primordial bispectrum. These signals are in particular distinctive in the regime of the quasi-single field inflation, where particles are oscillating with masses comparable to the Hubble scale. We apply the investigation to a class of scalar particles that experience a so-called waterfall phase transition in the isocurvature direction driven by the symmetry-breaking mechanism based on the hybrid inflation scenario. With a time-varying mass, a novel shape of oscillatory bispectrum is pr…
We consider supersymmetric shifted hybrid inflation models with a red tilted scalar spectral index n_s in agreement with the WMAP 7-yr central value. If non-minimal supergravity corrections are included, these models can also support a tensor-to-scalar ratio as large as r = 0.02, which may be observable by the Planck Satellite. In contrast to the standard supersymmetric hybrid inflation scenario, topological defects produced via gauge symmetry breaking are inflated away in the shifted version of the theory.
We discuss the phenomenological implications of hybrid natural inflation models in which the inflaton is a pseudo-Goldstone boson but inflation is terminated by a second scalar field. A feature of the scheme is that the scale of breaking of the Goldstone symmetry can be lower than the Planck scale and so gravitational corrections are under control. We show that, for supersymmetric models, the scale of inflation can be chosen anywhere between the Lyth upper bound and a value close to the electroweak breaking scale. Unlike previous models of low scale inflation the observed density perturbations…
We revisit the "`hybrid formalism"' for particle production used recently to study saturation effects in single hadron multiplicities at forward rapidities at RHIC and LHC. We point out that at leading twist there is an extra contribution to the formulae used so far, which corresponds to particle production via inelastic scattering of the projectile partons on the target fields. This contribution is expected to be small due to kinematics at very forward rapidities/very high transverse momenta, but should be significant at high momenta and very high energies. This contribution is expected to be…
In sneutrino hybrid inflation the superpartner of one of the right-handed neutrinos involved in the seesaw mechanism plays the role of the inflaton field. It obtains its large mass after the "waterfall" phase transition which ends hybrid inflation. After this phase transition the oscillations of the sneutrino inflaton field may dominate the universe and efficiently produce the baryon asymmetry of the universe via nonthermal leptogenesis. We investigate the conditions under which inflation, with primordial perturbations in accordance with the latest WMAP results, as well as successful nontherma…
It is shown that a tensor-to-scalar ratio close to r = 0.03, which can be observed by Planck, is realized in supersymmetric hybrid inflation models with TeV-scale soft supersymmetry breaking terms. This extends our previous analysis, which also found r <~ 0.03 but employed intermediate scale soft terms. Other cosmological observables such as the scalar spectral index are in good agreement with the WMAP data.
We study a generalized superconformal model that gives rise to a subcritical regime of $D$-term hybrid inflation. Exhibiting the model both in a Jordan frame and in the Einstein frame, the effective potential of the subcritical regime is derived in the Einstein frame. It turns out the inflaton-waterfall field dynamics leads to various types of inflaton potential. Consequently the tensor-to-scalar ratio is found to range from $10^{-4}$ ($10^{-3}$) to $0.1$ for getting 60 (50) $e$-folds before the end of inflation.
We consider an extended version of superconformal subcritical hybrid inflation model by introducing three right-handed neutrinos that have the Majorana mass terms. In the model one of the right-handed sneutrinos plays a role of the inflaton field, and it decays to reheat the universe after inflation. The vacuum expectation value for the waterfall field gives an unconventional pattern of the light neutrino mass matrix, and the neutrino Yukawa couplings that determine the reheating temperature are not constrained by the neutrino oscillation data. Consequently thermal leptogenesis or sneutrino le…
We perform a numerical investigation of the field evolution in the smooth hybrid inflationary model. We find that for almost all the examined initial values we do get an adequate amount of inflation. Our results show that the model is ''natural'' and satisfactory.
We propose a new model of the D-term hybrid inflation in the framework of supergravity. Although our model introduces, analogously to the conventional D-term inflation, the inflaton and a pair of scalar fields charged under a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, we study the logarithmic and exponential dependence on the inflaton field, respectively, for the Kähler and superpotential. This results in a characteristic one-loop scalar potential consisting of linear and exponential terms, which realizes the small-field inflation dominated by the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. With the reasonable values for the coupling…
Supersymmetric hybrid inflation is an exquisite framework to connect inflationary cosmology to particle physics at the scale of grand unification. Ending in a phase transition associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking, it can naturally explain the generation of entropy, matter and dark matter. Coupling F-term hybrid inflation to soft supersymmetry breaking distorts the rotational invariance in the complex inflaton plane---an important fact, which has been neglected in all previous studies. Based on the delta-N formalism, we analyze the cosmological perturbations for the first time in the f…
We consider a supersymmetric hybrid inflation model with two inflaton fields. The superpotential during inflation is dominated by W=(κS+κ' S')M^2, where S, S' are inflatons carrying the same U(1)_R charge, κ, κ' are dimensionless couplings, and M (\sim 10^{15-16} GeV) is a dimensionful parameter associated with a symmetry breaking scale. One light mass eigenstate drives inflation, while the other heavier mass eigenstate is stuck to the origin. The smallness of the lighter inflaton mass for the scalar spectral index n_s\approx 0.96, which is the center value of WMAP7, can be controlled by the r…
The non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric versions of hybrid inflation are summarized. It is emphasized that supersymmetric hybrid inflation (with its extensions) is an extremely "natural" inflationary scenario since it does not require "tiny" parameters, its superpotential has the most general form allowed by the symmetries, and it can be protected against radiative or supergravity corrections. A concrete supersymmetric grand unified theory which leads to hybrid inflation, solves the mu problem and generates seesaw masses for the light neutrinos is constructed. The "reheating" which follows h…
