Energy efficiency of fixed-rate transmissions is studied in the presence of queueing constraints and channel uncertainty. It is assumed that neither the transmitter nor the receiver has channel side information prior to transmission. The channel coefficients are estimated at the receiver via minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) estimation with the aid of training symbols. It is further assumed that the system operates under statistical queueing constraints in the form of limitations on buffer violation probabilities. The optimal fraction of of power allocated to training is identified. Spectral efficiency--bit energy tradeoff is analyzed in the low-power and wideband regimes by employing the effective capacity formulation. In particular, it is shown that the bit energy increases without bound in the low-power regime as the average power vanishes. On the other hand, it is proven that the bit energy diminishes to its minimum value in the wideband regime as the available bandwidth increases. For this case, expressions for the minimum bit energy and wideband slope are derived. Overall, energy costs of channel uncertainty and queueing constraints are identified.
Optimization of information freshness in wireless networks has usually been performed based on queueing analysis that captures only the temporal traffic dynamics associated with the transmitters and receivers. However, the effect of interference, which is mainly dominated by the interferers' geographic locations, is not well understood. In this paper, we leverage a spatiotemporal model, which allows one to characterize the age of information (AoI) from a joint queueing-geometry perspective, and design a decentralized scheduling policy that exploits local observation to make transmission decisi…
We consider a wireless network with a base station serving multiple traffic streams to different destinations. Packets from each stream arrive to the base station according to a stochastic process and are enqueued in a separate (per stream) queue. The queueing discipline controls which packet within each queue is available for transmission. The base station decides, at every time t, which stream to serve to the corresponding destination. The goal of scheduling decisions is to keep the information at the destinations fresh. Information freshness is captured by the Age of Information (AoI) metri…
A Queueing Characterization of Information Transmission over Block Fading Rayleigh Channels in the Low SNR

In this letter, we characterize the performance of broadcast approach with continuum of transmission layers in random wireless networks where the channel state information (CSI) is assumed to be known only at the receiver. By modeling the transmitter-receiver pairs using bipolar Poisson point process, we derive analytical expressions for the mean and variance of achievable transmission rate and the network transmission capacity under broadcast approach. Our analysis shows that the broadcast approach provides better mean transmission rate with lower variance compared to outage strategy.
In this paper, transmission scheduling for multiloop wireless networked control systems sharing the wireless channel is considered. A linear quadratic cost offset has been proposed to evaluate the performance gap induced by the nonideal communication. A functional relationship between linear quadratic offset metric and Age of Information has been built up. Based on the offset metric, we come up with an age-based scheduling policy and numerical simulations show that there is a significant improvement compared to the former work.
Transmission capacity of an ad hoc wireless network is analyzed when each node of the network harvests energy from nature, e.g. solar, wind, vibration etc. Transmission capacity is the maximum allowable density of nodes, satisfying a per transmitter-receiver rate, and an outage probability constraint. Energy arrivals at each node are assumed to follow a Bernoulli distribution, and each node stores energy using an energy buffer/battery. For ALOHA medium access protocol (MAP), optimal transmission probability that maximizes the transmission capacity is derived as a function of the energy arrival…
In conventional communication systems, any interference between two communicating points is regarded as unwanted noise since it distorts the received signals. On the other hand, allowing simultaneous transmission and intentionally accepting the interference of signals and even benefiting from it have been considered for a range of wireless applications. As prominent examples, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), joint source-channel coding, and the computation codes are designed to exploit this scenario. They also inspired many other fundamental works from network coding to consensus algorit…

Multiple relays capable of energy harvesting are deployed in the network to assist the information transmission. The hybrid access point can wirelessly supply energy to the relays, achieving multi-user gains from signal and energy cooperation. We propose a joint optimization for signal beamforming of the hybrid access point as well as wireless energy harvesting and collaborative beamforming strategies of the rel…
