We extend Mulliken's theory of ground state charge transfer in a donor-acceptor complex to excited state charge transfer between pairs of identical $π$-conjugated oligomers, one of which is in the optically excited state and the other in the ground state, leading to the formation of a charge-transfer exciton. Within our theory, optical absorptions from the charge-transfer exciton should include a low energy intermolecular charge-transfer excitation, as well as distinct intramolecular excitations from both the neutral delocalized exciton component and the Coulombically bound polaron-pair component of the charge-transfer exciton. We report high order configuration-interaction calculations for pairs of oligomers of poly-paraphenylenevinylene (PPV) that go beyond our previous single configuration-interaction calculation and find all five excited state absorptions predicted using heuristic arguments based on the Mulliken concept. Our calculated excited state absorption spectrum exhibits strong qualitative agreement with the complete wavelength-dependent ultrafast photoinduced absorption in films of PPV derivatives, suggesting that a significant fraction of the photoinduced absorption here is from the charge-transfer exciton. We make detailed comparisons to experiments, and a testable experimental prediction.
We present a theory of the electronic structure and photophysics of 1:1 blends of derivatives of polyparaphenylenevinylene and fullerenes. Within the same Coulomb-correlated Hamiltonian applied previously to interacting chains of single-component $π$-conjugated polymers, we find an exciplex state that occurs below the polymer's optical exciton. Weak absorption from the ground state occurs to the exciplex. We explain transient photoinduced absorptions in the blend, observed for both above-gap and below-gap photoexcitations, within our theory. Photoinduced absorptions for above-gap photoexcitati…
We describe both pi-conjugated polymers and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes because of the remarkable similarities in their behavior under photoexcitation. The common themes between these two seemingly different classes of materials are pi-conjugation, quasi one-dimensionality, and strong Coulomb interactions. Theoretical understanding of both systems requires going beyond traditional band theory. We present our current understanding of the electronic structures and excited state absorptions in both systems within a common theoretical model. Our aim is to give physical interpreta…
We develop a theory of the electronic structure and photophysics of interacting chains of π- conjugated polymers to understand the differences between solutions and films. While photoexcitation generates only the intrachain exciton in solutions, the optical exciton as well as weakly allowed charge-transfer excitons are generated in films. We extend existing theories of the lowest polaronpair and charge-transfer excitons to obtain descriptions of the excited states of these interchain species, and show that a significant fraction of ultrafast photoinduced absorptions in films originate from the…
The emission spectra of many pi-conjugated polymers and oligomers contain side-band replicas with apparent frequencies that do not match the Raman active mode frequencies. Using a time dependent model we show that in such many mode systems, the increased damping of the time dependent transition dipole moment correlation function results in an effective elimination of the vibrational modes from the emission spectrum; subsequently causing the appearance of a regularly spaced progression at a new apparent frequency. We use this damping dependent vibrational reshaping to quantitatively account for…
We report a simple one pot process for the preparation of lead sulphide (PbS) nanocrystals in the conjugated polymer MEH-PPV, and we demonstrate electronic coupling between the two components.
The photophysics of $π$-conjugated polymers has been of considerable interest over the last three decades because of their organic semiconductor properties. Primary photoexcitations, Frenkel excitons, can be probed optically by means of numerous linear spectroscopies, providing a wealth of information on the the strength of excitonic coupling, the exciton coherence length, and on the nature of the disordered energy landscape. Nonetheless, there are intrinsic limitations in the information that can be obtained with linear spectroscopy compared to non-linear coherent techniques. Examples of this…
There is currently a great need for solid state lasers that emit in the infrared. Whether or not conjugated polymers that emit in the IR can be synthesized is an interesting theoretical challenge. We show that the requirement for such a material is that the exciton delocalization in the system be large, such that the optical gap is small. We develop a theory of exciton delocalization in conjugated polymers, and show that the extent of this can be predicted from the topology of the conjugated polymer in question. We determine the precise structural characteristics that would be necessary for li…
As high-performance organic semiconductors, π-conjugated polymers have attracted much attention due to their charming advantages including low-cost, solution processability, mechanical flexibility, and tunable optoelectronic properties. During the past several decades, the great advances have been made in polymers-based OFETs with p-type, n-type or even ambipolar characterics. Through chemical modification and alignment optimization, lots of conjugated polymers exhibited superior mobilities, and some mobilities are even larger than 10 cm2 V-1 s-1 in OFETs, which makes them very promising for t…
In a recent paper Segal et al. [1] attempted to explain the dynamics of spin 1/2 photoluminescence detected magnetic resonance (PLDMR) in films of a pi-conjugated polymer, namely a soluble de-rivative of poly(phenylene-vinylene) [MEH-PPV] using a model (dubbed TPQ), in which the PLDMR is due to spin dependent triplet-polaron interactions that reduce the polarons density and consequent quenching of singlet excitons. We studied the full PLDMR and photoinduced ab-sorption (PA) dynamics of MEH-PPV films as a function of microwave power at various tempera-tures. We show, firstly, that the TPQ model…
There is currently a great need for solid state lasers that emit in the infrared. Whether or not conjugated polymers that emit in the IR can be synthesized is an interesting theoretical challenge. We show that emission in the IR can be achieved in designer polymers in which the effective Coulomb correlation is smaller than that in existing systems. We also show that the structural requirement for having small effective Coulomb correlations is that there exist transverse $π$--conjugation over a few bonds in addition to longitudinal conjugation with large conjugation lengths.
There is currently a great need for solid state lasers that emit in the infrared, as this is the operating wavelength regime for applications in telecommunications. Existing $π$--conjugated polymers all emit in the visible or ultraviolet, and whether or not $π$--conjugated polymers that emit in the infrared can be designed is an interesting challenge. On the one hand, the excited state ordering in trans-polyacetylene, the $π$--conjugated polymer with relatively small optical gap, is not conducive to light emission because of electron-electron interaction effects. On the other hand, excited sta…

We develop a model for charge trapping on conjugated polymer chains using a continuous representation of the polymer. By constraining the motion to along the chain, we find that kinks along the chain serve as points of attraction and can induce localization and spontaneous buckling of the chain. We implement this in a model system of a conjugated polymer donor and fullerene acceptor to mimic a polymer based photovoltaic system. We find that geometric fluctuations of the polymer give rise to deep potential energy traps at kinks which are often stronger than the Coulomb interaction between the e…
Electronic conduction in conjugated polymers is of emerging technological interest for high-performance optoelectronic and thermoelectric devices. A completely new aspect and understanding of the conduction mechanism on conducting polymers is introduced, allowing the applicability of materials to be optimized. The charge-transport mechanism is explained by direct experimental evidence with a very well supported theoretical model.
Excitation energies of light-emitting organic conjugated polymers have been investigated with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) within the adiabatic approximation for the dynamical exchange-correlation potential. Our calculations show that the accuracy of the calculated TDDFT excitation energies largely depends upon the accuracy of the dihedral angle obtained by the geometry optimization on ground-state DFT methods. We find that, when the DFT torsional dihedral angles between two adjacent phenyl rings are close to the experimental dihedral angles, the TDDFT excitation energies a…
Since the discovery of polyphthalocyanines (PPCs) in late 1950s, numerous attempts have been made to synthesize this 2D polymer by different approaches. Interestingly, the reported IR, Raman and UV-vis spectra of PPCs show drastic variation depending on the synthesis conditions. In this work, we show that the spectral data obtained in some works should be assigned not to the target polymer, but rather to octacyano phthalocyanine (OCP), which is an early step of the reaction. We discuss the spectral signatures of the well-polymerized and monomeric PCs based on reliable experimental data and sup…
Conjugated polymers can be reversibly doped by electrochemical means. This doping introduces new sub-bandgap optical absorption bands in the polymer while decreasing the bandgap absorption. To study this behavior, we have prepared an electrochemical cell allowing measurements of the optical properties of the polymer. The cell consists of a thin polymer film deposited on gold-coated Mylar behind which is another polymer that serves as a counterelectrode. An infrared transparent window protects the upper polymer from ambient air. By adding a gel electrolyte and making electrical connections to t…
A novel one pot process has been developed for the preparation of PbS nanocrystals in the conjugated polymer poly 2-methoxy,5-(2 -ethyl-hexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV). Current techniques for making such composite materials rely upon synthesizing the nanocrystals and conducting polymer separately, and subsequently mixing them. This multi-step technique has two serious drawbacks: templating surfactant must be removed before mixing, and co-solvent incompatibility causes aggregation. In our method, we eliminate the need for an initial surfactant by using the conducting polymer to terminat…
We address the role of excitonic coulping on the nature of photoexcitations in the conjugated polymer regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene). By means of temperature-dependent absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, we show that optical emission is overwhelmingly dominated by weakly coupled H-aggregates. The relative absorbance of the 0-0 and 0-1 vibronic peaks provides a powerfully simple means to extract the magnitude of the intermolecular coupling energy, approximately 5 and 30 meV for films spun from isodurene and chloroform solutions respectively.
As the periodicity in crystalline materials creates the optimal condition for electronic delocalization, one might expect that in partially crystalline conjugated polymers delocalization is impeded by intergrain transport. However, for the best conducting polymers this presumption fails. Delocalization is obstructed by interchain rather than intergrain charge transfer and we propose a model of weakly coupled disordered chains to describe the physics near the metal-insulator transition. Our quantitative calculations match the outcome of recent broad-band optical experiments and provide a consis…
The nature of the primary photoexcitations in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-SWCNTs) is of strong current interest. We have studied the emission spectra of S-SWCNTs and two different $π$-conjugated polymers in solutions and films, and have also performed ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy on these systems. The emission spectra relative to the absorption bands are very similar in S-SWCNTs and polymers, with redshifted photoluminescence in films showing exciton migration. The transient photoinduced absorptions (PAs) in SWCNTs and $π$-conjugated polymers are also remarkably simil…
We theoretically investigate the ground state properties of ferromagnetic metal/conjugated polymer interfaces. The work is partially motivated by recent experiments in which injection of spin polarized electrons from ferromagnetic contacts into thin films of conjugated polymers was reported. We use a one-dimensional nondegenerate Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian to describe the conjugated polymer and one-dimensional tight-binding models to describe the ferromagnetic metal. We consider both a model for a conventional ferromagnetic metal, in which there are no explicit structural degrees o…
A recently developed linear-scaling density-functional theory (LS-DFT) formalism is used to calculate optical absorption spectra of hybrids of C60 and the conjugated polymers poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) and poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV). The use of a LS formalism allows calculations on large systems with realistic proportions of C60, which has been of interest for the use of such materials in photovoltaics. Two different bonding structures are tested for the hybrid PPP and for both systems additional peaks are present in the absorption spectra below the original onset of absorption. By id…
The authors report on the realization of ordered arrays of light-emitting conjugated polymer nanofibers by near-field electrospinning. The fibers, made by poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene], have diameters of few hundreds of nanometers and emission peaked at 560 nm. The observed blue-shift compared to the emission from reference films is attributed to different polymer packing in the nanostructures. Optical confinement in the fibers is also analyzed through self-waveguided emission. These results open interesting perspectives for realizing complex and ordered architectur…
The recombination of electron-hole pairs injected in extended conjugated systems is modeled as a multi-pathway vibron-driven relaxation in monoexcited state-space. The computed triplet-to-singlet ratio of exciton formation times $r = τ_T/τ_S$ increases from 0.9 for a model dimer to 2.5 for a 32-unit chain, in excellent agreement with experiments. Therewith we rationalize recombination efficiency in terms of spin-dependent interstate vibronic coupling and spin- and conjugation-length-dependent exciton binding energies. Our model calculations for various length polymers indicate that the ratio of…
Electronic structures and optical excitations in Moebius conjugated polymers are studied theoretically. Periodic and Moebius boundary conditions are applied to the tight binding model of poly(para-phenylene), taking into account of the exciton effects by long-range Coulomb interactions. We first discuss that oligomers with a few structural units are more effective than polymers, in order to measure effects of discrete wave numbers which are shift by the Moebius boundary from those of the periodic boundary. Next, calculations of the optical absorption spectra are reported. Certain components of…
Conjugated polymers are complex multi-chromophore systems, with emission properties strongly dependent on the electronic energy transfer through active sub-units. Although the packing of the conjugated chains in the solid state is known to be a key factor to tailor the electronic energy transfer and the resulting optical properties, most of the current solution-based processing methods do not allow for effectively controlling the molecular order, thus making the full unveiling of energy transfer mechanisms very complex. Here we report on conjugated polymer fibers with tailored internal molecul…
Light emitting electrospun nanofibers of poly-[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(N,N'-diphenyl)-N,N'-di(p-butyl-oxy-phenyl)-1,4-diaminobenzene)] (PFO-PBAB) are produced by electrospinning under different experimental conditions. In particular, uniform fibers with average diameter of 180 nm are obtained by adding an organic salt to the electrospinning solution. The spectroscopic investigation assesses that the presence of the organic salt does not alter the optical properties of the active material, therefore providing an alternative approach for the fabrication of highly emissive conjugated …
There is an enormous potential in applying conjugated polymers in novel organic opto-electronic devices such as light emitting diodes and solar cells. Although prototypes and first products exist, a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental processes and energetics involved during photoexcitation is still lacking and limits further device optimisations. Here we report on a unique analysis of the excited states involved in charge generation by photoexcitation. On the model system poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), we demonstrate the general applicability of our novel approach. From photoemissi…
Electronic structures and optical excitations in Moebius conjugated polymers are studied theoretically. Periodic and Moebius boundary conditions are applied to the tight binding model of poly(para-phenylene), taking exciton effects into account. We discuss that oligomers with a few structural units are more effective than polymers for observations of effects of discrete wave numbers that are shifted by the change in boundary condition. Next, calculations of optical absorption spectra are reported. Certain components of optical absorption for an electric field perpendicular to the polymer axis …
To identify reliable molecular design principles for energy level tuning in donor/acceptor conjugated polymers (CPs), we studied the governing factors by means of ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT). We investigated a series of CPs in which we independently and systematically varied the electron withdrawing power of the acceptor unit and the electron donating power of the donor unit, while maintaining the same conjugated chain conformation. We observed that the introduction of a stronger acceptor unit, while keeping the same donor unit in the CP, lowers the LUMO lev…
We have studied the exciton states in two coupled conjugated polymer chains which are modeled individually by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian and coupled by an interchain electron-transfer term. Both the intra- and inter-chain long range Coulomb interactions are taken into account. The properties of the lowest symmetric and antisymmetric exciton states are extensively discussed for both the parallel and anti-parallel ordering between these two chains. It is found that, for these two kinds of ordering, the features of excitons are quite different. Possible implications for the experiment o…
Research on conjugated polymers for thermoelectric applications has made tremendous progress in recent years, which is accompanied by surging interest in molecular doping as a means to achieve the high electrical conductivities that are required. A detailed understanding of the complex relationship between the doping process, the structural as well as energetic properties of the polymer films, and the resulting thermoelectric behavior is slowly emerging. This review summarizes recent developments and strategies that permit enhancing the electrical conductivity of p- and n-type conjugated polym…
The interplay between inter- and intra-chain charge transport in bulk polythiophene in the hopping regime has been clarified by studying the conductivity as a function of frequency (up to 3 THz), temperature and doping level. We present a model which quantitatively explains the observed crossover from quasi-one-dimensional transport to three-dimensional hopping conduction with increasing doping level. At high frequencies the conductivity is dominated by charge transport on one-dimensional conducting chains.
Optical devices fabricated using conjugated polymer systems give rise to singlet exciton yields which are high compared to the statistically predicted estimate of 25% obtained using simple recombination schemes. In this study we evaluate the singlet exciton yield in conjugated polymers systems by fitting to a model that incorporates the Pauli exclusion principle. The rate equations which describe the exciton dynamics include quantum dynamical components (both density and spin-dependent) which arise during the spin-allowed conversion of composite intra-molecular excitons into loosely bound char…
Polymer light-emitting devices were fabricated utilizing plasma polymerized thin films as emissive layers. These conjugated polymer films were prepared by RF Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) using naphthalene as monomer. The effect of different applied powers on the chemical structure and optical properties of the conjugated polymers was investigated. The fabricated devices with structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/ plasma polymerized Naphthalene/Alq3/Al showed broadband Electroluminescence (EL) emission peaks with center at 535-550 nm. Using different structural and optical tests, conn…
The optoelectronic properties of amorphous conjugated polymers are sensitive to conformational disorder and spectroscopy provides the means for structural characterization of the fragments of the chain which interact with light - "chromophores". A faithful interpretation of spectroscopic conformational signatures, however, presents a key challenge. We investigate the relationship between the ground state optical gaps, the properties of the excited states, and the structural features of chromophores of a single molecule poly(3-hexyl)-thiophene (P3HT), using quantum-classical atomistic simulatio…
We find that conjugated polymers can undergo reversible structural phase transitions during electrochemical oxidation and ion injection. We study poly[2,5-bis(thiophenyl)-1,4-bis(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)benzene] (PB2T-TEG), a conjugated polymer with glycolated side chains. Using grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), we show that, in contrast to previously known polymers, this polymer switches between two structurally distinct crystalline phases associated with electrochemical oxidation/reduction in an aqueous electrolyte. Importantly, we show that this unique phas…
In organic optoelectronics, order of conjugated molecules is required for good charge transport, but strong aggregation behavior may generate grain boundaries and trapping, opposing those benefits. Side chains on a polymer's backbone are major reason for and also tool to modify its morphological characteristics. In this report, we show on the example poly(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-co-bithiophene) (F8T2) that by a combination of two types of side-chains on the backbone of equal number of carbons, one promoting crystallization, another hindering it, organization of the main chains can be controlled, …
Conjugated polymers are increasingly used as organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors in electrochemical devices for neuromorphic computing, bioelectronics and energy harvesting. The design of efficient applications relies on high electrochemical doping levels, high electronic conductivity, fast doping/dedoping kinetics and high ionic uptake. In this work, we establish structure-property relations and demonstrate how these parameters can be modulated by the co-existence of order and disorder. We use in-situ time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry, resonant Raman and terahertz conductivity measu…
We report the development of redox-active conjugated polymers with potential application to electrochemical energy storage. Side chain engineering enables processing of the polymer electrodes from solution, stability in aqueous electrolytes and efficient transport of ionic and electronic charge carriers. We synthesized a 3,3' dialkoxybithiophene homo polymer (p type polymer) with glycol side chains and prepared naphthalene 1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic-diimide-dialkoxybithiophene (NDI gT2) copolymers (n type polymer) with either a glycol or zwitterionic side chain on the NDI unit. For the latter, we…
Ring torsion effects on optical excitation properties in poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) and polyaniline (PAN) are investigated by the intermediate exciton formalism. Long-range excitons are characterized, and the long-range component of the oscillator strengths is calculated. We find that ring torsions affect the long-range excitons in PAN more easily than in PPP, due to the larger torsion angle of PAN and the large number of bonds whose hopping integrals are modulated by torsions.
Many optoelectronic devices based on organic materials require rapid and long-range singlet exciton transport. Key factors that control the transport of singlet excitons includes the electronic structure of the material, disorder and exciton-phonon coupling. An important parameter whose influence on exciton transport has not been explored is the symmetry of the singlet electronic state (S1). Here, we employ femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and microscopy to reveal the relationship between the symmetry of S1 and exciton transport in highly aligned, near-disorder free, one-dimension…
In this letter we describe electronic measurements of a conjugated polymer of phenylenevinylene (PPV) with electrode spacings down to 20 nm; all measurements are made in a gated transistor geometry. With rectangular electrodes we find that the current is fit by an exponential in the applied electric field for spacings between 50 nm and 2um. Based on this finding we conclude that the current is not injection limited, and is concentrated in a very small region; we also discuss possible transport mechanisms. The calculated mobility appears exponential in the electric field rather than in the squa…
Electric fields are central to the operation of optoelectronic devices based on conjugated polymers since they drive the recombination of electrons and holes to excitons in organic light-emitting diodes but are also responsible for the dissociation of excitons in solar cells. One way to track the microscopic effect of electric fields on charge carriers formed under illumination of a polymer film is to exploit the fluorescence arising from delayed recombination of carrier pairs, a process which is fundamentally spin dependent. Such spin-dependent recombination can be probed directly in fluoresc…
Using long C_{N}H_{2} conjugated carbon chains with the polyynic structure as prototypical examples of one-dimensional (1D) semiconductors, we discuss self-localization of excess charge carriers into 1D large polarons in the presence of the interaction with a surrounding polar solvent. The solvation mechanism of self-trapping is different from the polaron formation due to coupling with bond-length modulations of the underlying atomic lattice well-known in conjugated polymers. Model ab initio computations employing the hybrid B3LYP density functional in conjunction with the polarizable continuu…

Highlighted features include ribbon-shape of the realized fibers, and the persistence of a network serving as a template for heterogeneous active layers in solar cell devices. A set of favorable characteristics is evidenced in t…
