We propose a microscopic approach describing the interaction of an ideal gas of hydrogenlike atoms with a weak electromagnetic field. This approach is based on the Green-function formalism and an approximate formulation of the method of second quantization for quantum many-particle systems in the presence of bound states of particles. The dependencies of the propagation velocity and damping rate of electromagnetic pulses on the microscopic characteristics of the system are studied for a gas of hydrogenlike atoms. For a Bose-Einstein condensate of alkali-metal atoms we find the conditions when the electromagnetic waves of both the optical and microwave regions are slowed. In the framework of the proposed approach, the influence of an external homogeneous and static magnetic field on the slowing phenomenon is studied.
We propose a method to probe Landau and Beliaev processes in dilute trapped atomic condensates with a multiple state structure using ultraslow light experimental configurations. Under certain conditions, damping rates from these collisional processes are directly proportional to the dephasing rates, making it possible to determine damping rates through measurement of the dephasing. In the ultraslow light systems we consider, Landau decay rates are enhanced at low momenta, which allows one to distinguish between Landau-dominated and Beliaev-dominated regimes at the same temperature. Furthermore…
We use a diagrammatic hopping expansion to calculate finite-temperature Green functions of the Bose-Hubbard model which describes bosons in an optical lattice. This technique allows for a summation of subsets of diagrams, so the divergence of the Green function leads to non-perturbative results for the boundary between the superfluid and the Mott phase for finite temperatures. Whereas the first-order calculation reproduces the seminal mean-field result, the second order goes beyond and shifts the phase boundary in the immediate vicinity of the critical parameters determined by the latest high-…
In this paper, we present a generalized Green's function method which can be used to investigate the quantum phase transitions analytically in a systematic way for ultracold Bose systems in bipartite optical lattices. As an example, to the lowest order, we calculate the quantum phase boundaries of the localized states (Mott insulator or charge density wave) of an ultracold Bose system in a $d$-dimensional hypercubic optical lattice with nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions. Due to the inhomogeneity of the system, in the generalized Green's function method, cumuants on different sublattices …
Starting from the Dyson-Beliaev and generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations with an extra nonlocal potential, we derive an exact expression of the two-particle Green's function K for an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in terms of unambiguously defined self-energies and vertices. The formula can be a convenient basis for approximate calculations of K. It also tells us that poles of K are not shared with (i.e. shifted from) those of the single-particle Green's function, contrary to the conclusion of previous studies.
The dilute interacting Bose gas : comparisons between Feynman diagrammatic expansion and the hierarchy equations for the imaginary time Green functions
Model of the degenerated weakly non-ideal Bose gas is considered without suggestion on C-number representation of the creation and annihilation operators with zero momentum. The "density-density" correlation function and the one-particle Green function are calculated on basis of the suggestion about C-number representation of the operator of particle density in the Bose condensate. It is shown, that the pole in the "density-density" Green function determines the Bogolyubov's spectrum of the collective excitations, which have the phonon-roton form. At the same time the spectrum of the one-parti…
We give the Green function, momentum distribution, two-particle correlation function, and structure factor for the bound state of N indistinguishable bosons with an attractive delta-function interaction in one dimension, and an argument showing that this boson "molecule" has no excited states other than dissociation into separated pieces.
Properties of the weakly non-ideal Bose gas are considered without suggestion on C-number representation of the creation and annihilation operators with zero momentum. The "density-density" correlation function and the one-particle Green function of the degenerated Bose gas are calculated on the basis of the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. It is shown that the spectrum of the one-particle excitations possesses a gap whose value is connected with the density of particles in the "condensate". At the same time, the pole in the "density-density" Green function determines the phonon-rot…
The dielectric formalism is used to set up an approximate description of a spatially homogeneous weakly interacting Bose gas in the collision-less regime, which is both conserving and gap-less, and has coinciding poles of the single-particle Green's function and the density autocorrelation function in the Bose-condensed regime. The approximation takes into account the direct and the exchange interaction in a consistent way. The fulfillment of the generalized Ward identities related to the conservation of particle-number and the breaking of the gauge-symmetry is demonstrated. The dynamics at lo…
We present the Stochastic Green Function (SGF) algorithm designed for bosons on lattices. This new quantum Monte Carlo algorithm is independent of the dimension of the system, works in continuous imaginary time, and is exact (no error beyond statistical errors). Hamiltonians with several species of bosons (and one-dimensional Bose-Fermi Hamiltonians) can be easily simulated. Some important features of the algorithm are that it works in the canonical ensemble and gives access to n-body Green functions.
A quantum-field approach to studying the Bose systems at finite temperatures and in states with spontaneously broken symmetry, in particular in a superfluid state, is proposed. A generalized model of a self-consistent field (SCF) for spatially inhomogeneous many-particle Bose systems is used as the initial approximation. A perturbation theory has been developed, and a diagram technique for temperature Green's functions (GFs) has been constructed. The Dyson's equations joining the eigenenergy and vertex functions have been deduced.
We present a non-equilibrium Green's functional approach to study the dynamics following a quench in weakly interacting Bose Hubbard model (BHM). The technique is based on the self-consistent solution of a set of equations which represents a particular case of the most general set of Hedin's equations for the interacting single-particle Green's function. We use the ladder approximation as a skeleton diagram for the two-particle scattering amplitude useful, through the self-energy in the Dyson equation, for finding the interacting single-particle Green's function. This scheme is then implemente…
In this paper, by treating the hopping parameter in Bose-Hubbard model as a perturbation, with the help of the re-summed Green's function method and cumulants expansion, the momentum distribution function of the ultra-cold Bose system in triangular optical lattice is calculated analytically. By utilizing it, the time-of-flight absorption picture is plotted and the corresponding visibility is determined. The comparison between our analytical results and the experimental data from Ref.[4] exhibits a qualitative agreement.
Theory of a weakly non-ideal Bose gas in the canonical ensemble is developed without assumption of the C-number representation of the creation and annihilation operators with zero momentum. It is shown that the pole of the "density-density" Green's function exactly coincides with the Bogolybov's phonon-roton spectrum of excitations. At the same time, a gap exists in the one-particle excitation spectrum . This gap is related to the density of particles in the "condensate".
We discuss the microscopical justification of dissipation in the model nonrelativistic Fermi and Bose systems with weak local interactions above phase transitions. The dynamics of equilibrium fluctuations are considered in Keldysh - Schwinger framework. We show that the dissipation is related to pinch singularities of the diagram technique. Using Dyson - Schwinger equation and the two-loop approximation we define and calculate the attenuation parameter which is related to exponentiality of Green's functions decay. We show that the attenuation parameter is the microscopic analogue of the Onsage…

The properties of Green's functions and various correlation functions of density and spin operators are considered in a homogeneous spin-1 Bose gas in different phases. The dielectric formalism is worked out and the partial coincidence of the one-particle and collective spectra is pointed out below the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation. As an application the formalism is used to give two approximations for the propagators and the correlation functions and the spectra of excitations including shifts and widths due to the thermal cloud.
We discuss the equivalence of two non-equilibrium kinetic theories that describe the evolution of a dilute, Bose-Einstein condensed atomic gas in a harmonic trap. The second-order kinetic equations of Walser et al. [PRA 63, 013607 (2001)] reduce to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the quantum Boltzmann equation in the low and high temperature limits, respectively. These kinetic equations can thus describe the system in equilibrium (finite temperature) as well as in non-equilibrium (real time). We have found this theory to be equivalent to the non-equilibrium Green's function approach original…
We present a microscopic theory of the second order phase transition in an interacting Bose gas that allows one to describe formation of an ordered condensate phase from a disordered phase across an entire critical region continuously. We derive the exact fundamental equations for a condensate wave function and the Green functions, which are valid both inside and outside the critical region. They are reduced to the usual Gross-Pitaevskii and Beliaev-Popov equations in a low-temperature limit outside the critical region. The theory is readily extendable to other phase transitions, in particular…
We study the effects of repulsive interactions on the critical density for the Bose-Einstein transition in a homogeneous dilute gas of bosons. First, we point out that the simple mean field approximation produces no change in the critical density, or critical temperature, and discuss the inadequacies of various contradictory results in the literature. Then, both within the frameworks of Ursell operators and of Green's functions, we derive self-consistent equations that include the dynamic correlations in the system and predict the change of the critical density. We argue that the dominant cont…
We study the effect of random on-site energies on the critical temperature of a non-interacting Bose gas on a lattice. In our derivation the on-site energies are distributed according a Gaussian probability distribution function having vanishing average and variance $v_o^2$. By using the replicated action obtained by averaging on the disorder, we perform a perturbative expansion for the Green functions of the disordered system. We evaluate the shift of the chemical potential induced by the disorder and we compute, for $v_o^2 << 1$, the critical temperature for condensation. We find that, for l…
We discuss the effect of a molecular Bose condensate on the energy of Fermi excitations in a trapped two-component atomic Fermi gas. The single-particle Green's functions can be approximated by the well-known BCS form, in both the BCS (Cooper pairs) and BEC (Feshbach resonance molecules) domains. The composite Bose order parameter ${\tilde Δ}$ describing bound states of two atoms and the Fermi chemical potential $μ$ are calculated self-consistently. In the BEC regime characterized by $μ<0$, the Fermi quasiparticle energy gap is given by $\sqrt{μ^2+{\tilde Δ}^2}$, instead of $|{\tilde Δ}|$ in t…
We evaluate the particle current flowing in steady state through a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a constant force in a quasi-onedimensional lattice and to attractive interactions from fermionic atoms that are localized in various configurations inside the lattice wells. The system is treated within a Bose-Hubbard tight binding model by an out-of-equilibrium Green's function approach. A new band gap opens up when the lattice period is doubled by locating the fermions in alternate wells and yields an interference pattern in the transmittivity on varying the intensity of the driving force. …
We consider the Bose-Einstein transition of homogeneous weakly interacting spin-0 particles based on the normal-state Phi-derivable approximation. Self-consistent calculations of Green's function and the chemical potential with several approximate Phi's are performed numerically as a function of temperature near Tc, which exhibit qualitatively different results. The ladder approximation apparently shows a continuous transition with the prefactor c=2.94 for the transition-temperature shift given in terms of the scattering length a and density n. In contrast, the second-order, particle-hole, and…
The dynamics of a confined fluid of Bose atoms is treated within the linear response regime, with a view to establishing a current-density functional formalism for an inhomogeneous superfluid state. After evaluating in full detail a simplified case of an external coupling to the density and phase of the condensate, the theory is extended to include the coupling to the total current density. The Kohn-Sham response functions of the condensate and all the exchange-correlation kernels for the superfluid are introduced from the microscopic equations of motion and are expressed in a physically trans…
We extend the formalism of the thermodynamic two-time Green's functions to nonextensive quantum statistical mechanics. Working in the optimal Lagrangian multipliers representation, the $q$-spectral properties and the methods for a direct calculation of the two-time $q$% -Green's functions and the related $q$-spectral density ($q$ measures the nonextensivity degree) for two generic operators are presented in strict analogy with the extensive ($q=1$) counterpart. Some emphasis is devoted to the nonextensive version of the less known spectral density method whose effectiveness in exploring equili…
This paper presents a conserving gapless mean-field theory for weakly interacting Bose gases. We first construct a mean-field Luttinger-Ward thermodynamic functional in terms of the condensate wave function $Ψ$ and the Nambu Green's function $\hat{G}$ for the quasiparticle field. Imposing its stationarity respect to $Ψ$ and $\hat{G}$ yields a set of equations to determine the equilibrium for general non-uniform systems. They have a plausible property of satisfying the Hugenholtz-Pines theorem to provide a gapless excitation spectrum. Also, the corresponding dynamical equations of motion obey v…
We study the anomalous dimension $η$ of homogeneous interacting single-component Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperatures for $d\lesssim 4$ dimensions. This $η$ is defined in terms of the one-particle density matrix $ρ({\bf r})\equiv \langle \hatψ^\dagger({\bf r}_1)\hatψ({\bf r}_1+{\bf r})\rangle$ through its asymptotic behavior $ρ({\bf r})\rightarrow N_{\bf 0}/V+C r^{-d+2-η}$ for $r\rightarrow \infty$, where $N_{\bf 0}/V$ is the condensate density and $C$ is a constant. It is shown that the anomalous dimension is given by $η=0.181ε^2$ to the leading order in $ε\equiv d-4$. The change …
Most recently, the path integral molecular dynamics has been successfully used to consider the thermodynamics of single-component identical bosons and fermions. In this work, the path integral molecular dynamics is developed to simulate the thermodynamics, Green's function and momentum distribution of two-component bosons in three dimensions. As an example of our general method, we consider the thermodynamics of up to sixteen bosons in a three-dimensional harmonic trap. For noninteracting spinor bosons, our simulation shows a bump in the heat capacity. As the repulsive interaction strength inc…
We consider a system of one-dimensional non-interacting fermions in external harmonic confinement. Using an efficient Green's function method we evaluate the exact profiles and the pair correlation function, showing a direct signature of the Fermi statistics and of the single quantum-level occupancy. We also study the dynamical properties of the gas, obtaining the spectrum both in the collisionless and in the collisional regime. Our results apply as well to describe a one-dimensional Bose gas with point-like hard-core interactions.
We investigate the phase diagram of a two-species Bose-Hubbard model describing atoms and molecules on a lattice, interacting via a Feshbach resonance. We identify a region where the system exhibits an exotic super-Mott phase and regions with phases characterized by atomic and/or molecular condensates. Our approach is based on a recently developed exact quantum Monte Carlo algorithm: the Stochastic Green Function algorithm with tunable directionality. We confirm some of the results predicted by mean-field studies, but we also find disagreement with these studies. In particular, we find a phase…
The response of the system, consisting of two kinds of opposite-charged fermions and their bound states (hydrogen-like atoms), to the perturbation by the external electromagnetic field in low particle kinetic energies region is studied. Expressions for Green functions that describe the system response to the external electromagnetic field and take into account the presence of particle bound states (atoms) are found. Macroscopic parameters of the system, such as conductivity, permittivity and magnetic permeability in terms of these Green functions are introduced. As an example, the perturbation…
Motivated by the calculation of correlation functions in inhomogeneous one-dimensional (1d) quantum systems, the 2d Inhomogeneous Gaussian Free Field (IGFF) is studied and solved. The IGFF is defined in a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ equipped with a conformal class of metrics $[{\rm g}]$ and with a real positive coupling constant $K: Ω\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{>0}$ by the action $\mathcal{S}[h] = \frac{1}{8π} \int_Ω\frac{\sqrt{\rm g} d^2 {\rm x}}{K({\rm x})} \, {\rm g}^{i j} (\partial_i h)(\partial_j h)$. All correlations functions of the IGFF are expressible in terms of the Green's functions …
