H-alpha emission from neutral halo clouds probes the radiation and hydrodynamic conditions in the halo. Armed with such measurements, we can explore how radiation escapes from the Galactic plane and how infalling gas can survive a trip through the halo. The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) is one of the most sensitive instruments for detecting and mapping optical emission from the ISM. Here, we present recent results exploring the ionization of two infallling high-velocity complexes. First, we report on our progress mapping H-alpha emission covering the full extent of Complex A. Intensities are faint (<100 mR; EM <0.2 pc cm^-6 but correlate on the sky and in velocity with 21-cm emission. Second, we explore the ionized component of some Anti-Center Complex clouds studied by Peek et al. (2007) that show dynamic shaping from interaction with the Galactic halo.
Lyman-$α$ blobs (LABs) are spatially extended nebulae of emission in the Ly$α$ line of hydrogen, seen at high redshifts$^{1,2}$, and most commonly found in the dense environment of star-forming galaxies$^{3,4}$. The origin of Ly$α$ emission in the LABs is still unclear and under debate$^{5}$. Proposed powering sources generally fall into two categories: (1) photoionization, galactic super-winds/outflows, resonant scattering of Ly$α$ photons from starbursts or active galactic nuclei (AGNs)$^{6,7,8,9,10}$ and (2) cooling radiation from cold streams of gas accreting onto galaxies$^{12}$. Here we …
We report follow-up observations of the Class I binary protostellar system L1551 NE in the C18O (3--2) line with the SMA in its compact and subcompact configurations. Our previous observations at a higher angular resolution in the extended configuration revealed a circumbinary disk exhibiting Keplerian motion. The combined data having more extensive spatial coverage (~140 - 2000 AU) verify the presence of a Keplerian circumbinary disk, and reveals for the first time a distinct low-velocity (~< +-0.5 km s-1 from the systemic velocity) component that displays a velocity gradient along the minor …
Using long-slit optical spectra obtained with the 2-m telescope at IUCAA Girawali Observatory, we show that the radio source J094221.98+062335.2 (z=0.123) is associated with a galaxy pair undergoing a major merger. Its companion is a normal star-forming galaxy infalling with a velocity of 185 km/s at a projected separation of 4.8 kpc. Using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) we detect a strong HI 21-cm absorption at the systemic redshift of the radio galaxy with N(HI)~9x10^21 cm^{-2} for an assumed spin-temperature of 100 K. Such a strong…
Using velocity tagging we have detected hydrogen from NGC 5426 falling onto its interacting partner NGC 5427. Our observations, with the GHaFaS Fabry-Perot spectrometer, produced maps of the two galaxies in Halpha surface brightness and radial velocity. We found emission with the range of velocities associated with NGC 5426 along lines of sight apparently emanating from NGC 5427, superposed on the velocity map of the latter. After excluding instrumental effects we assign the anomalous emission to gas pulled from NGC 5426 during its passage close to NGC 5427. Its distribution, more intense betw…
Inflows at the dusty torus and smaller scales is crucial to investigate the process of supermassive black hole accretion. However, only few cases of inflowing gas at small scales have been reported through redshifted broad absorption lines so far. Here we report 9 redshifted narrow absorption lines (NALs) of $\rm Mg^+$ ions with inflowing speeds of 1071 -- 1979 km/s, which are likely along the directions close to the axes of accretion disks. The quasars showing inflowing Mg II NALs have on average slightly smaller Eddington ratios when compared to the sources with outflow Mg II NALs. The upper…
We analyse the gas content evolution of infalling haloes in cluster environments from THE THREE HUNDRED project, a collection of 324 numerically modelled galaxy clusters. The haloes in our sample were selected within $5R_{200}$ of the main cluster halo at $z=0$ and have total halo mass $M_{200}\geq10^{11} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$. We track their main progenitors and study their gas evolution since their crossing into the infall region, which we define as $1-4R_{200}$. Studying the radial trends of our populations using both the full phase space information and a line-of-sight projection, we confirm t…
We have resolved for the first time the radial and vertical structure of the almost edge-on envelope/disk system of the low-mass Class 0 protostar L1527. For that, we have used ALMA observations with a spatial resolution of 0.25$^{\prime\prime}$$\times$0.13$^{\prime\prime}$ and 0.37$^{\prime\prime}$$\times$0.23$^{\prime\prime}$ at 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively. The L1527 dust continuum emission has a deconvolved size of 78 au $\times$ 21 au, and shows a flared disk-like structure. A thin infalling-rotating envelope is seen in the CCH emission outward of about 150 au, and its thickness is inc…
We report on CO (J = 2 - 1) mapping with the IRAM 30-m HERA receiver array of CGCG 97-079, an irregular galaxy in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 1367 (z = 0.022). We find that $\sim$ 80% of the detected CO (J = 2 - 1) is projected within a 16 arcsec$^{2}$ (6.5 kpc$^{2}$) region to the north and west of the optical/NIR centre, with the intensity maximum offset $\sim 10$ arcsec (4 kpc) NW of the optical/NIR centre and $\sim$ 7 arcsec (3 kpc) south-east of the HI intensity maximum. Evolutionary synthesis models indicate CGCG 97-079 experienced a burst of star formation $\sim$ 10$^8$ yr ago, mos…
Sub-arcsecond images of the rotational line emission of CS and SO have been obtained toward the Class I protostar IRAS 04365$+$2535 in TMC-1A with ALMA. A compact component around the protostar is clearly detected in the CS and SO emission. The velocity structure of the compact component of CS reveals infalling-rotating motion conserving the angular momentum. It is well explained by a ballistic model of an infalling-rotating envelope with the radius of the centrifugal barrier (a half of the centrifugal radius) of 50 AU, although the distribution of the infalling gas is asymmetric around the pr…
We report new wide-field (~ 4 x 4 square arcmin) MUSE observations of the Blue Infalling Group (BIG), a compact group of galaxies located at a projected distance of ~ 150 kpc from the X-Ray centre of the A1367 cluster at z = 0.021. Our MUSE observations map in detail the extended ionized gas, primarily traced by H$α$ emission, in between the members of the group. The gas morphology and its kinematics appear consistent with a tidal origin due to galaxy encounters, as also supported by the disturbed kinematics visible in one of the group members and the presence of tidal dwarf systems. A diffuse…
We present a code for modelling the ionization conditions of optically thin astrophysical gas structures. Given the gas hydrogen density, equilibrium temperature, elemental abundances, and the ionizing spectrum, the code solves the equilibrium ionization fractions and number densities for all ions from hydrogen to zinc. The included processes are photoionization, Auger ionization, direct collisional ionization, excitation auto-ionization, charge exchange ionization, two-body radiative recombination, dielectronic recombination, and charge exchange recombination. The ionizing spectrum can be gen…
There is compelling evidence that most -if not all- galaxies harbour a super-massive black hole (SMBH) at their nucleus, hence binaries of these massive objects are an inevitable product of the hierarchical evolution of structures in the universe, and represent an important but thus-far elusive phase of galaxy evolution. Gas accretion via a circumbinary disc is thought to be important for the dynamical evolution of SMBH binaries, as well as in producing luminous emission that can be used to infer their properties. One plausible source of the gaseous fuel is clumps of gas formed due to turbulen…
We report $Suzaku$ X-ray observations of the dark subhalo associated with the merging group of NGC 4839 in the Coma cluster. The X-ray image exhibits an elongated tail toward the southwest. The X-ray peak shifts approximately $1'$ away from the weak-lensing mass center toward the opposite direction of the Coma cluster center. We investigated the temperature, normalization, pressure, and entropy distributions around the subhalo. Excluding the X-ray tail, the temperature beyond the truncation radius is 8-10$~\rm keV$, which is two times higher than that of the subhalo and the X-ray tail. The pre…
We revisit the reliability of metallicity estimates of high velocity clouds with the help of hydrodynamical simulations. We quantify the effect of accretion and viewing angle on metallicity estimates derived from absorption lines. Model parameters are chosen to provide strong lower limits on cloud contamination by ambient gas. Consistent with previous results, a cloud traveling through a stratified halo is contaminated by ambient material to the point that <10% of its mass in neutral hydrogen consists of original cloud material. Contamination progresses nearly linearly with time, and it increa…

We develop a self-consistent model for the equilibrium gas temperature and size-dependent dust temperature in cold, dense pre-stellar cores, assuming an arbitrary power-law size distribution of dust grains. Compact analytical expressions applicable to a broad range of physical parameters are derived and compared with predictions of the commonly used standard model. It is suggested that combining the theoretical results with observations should allow us to constrain the degree of dust evolution and the cosmic-ray ionization rate in dense cores, and to help in discriminating between different re…
The various ionization mechanisms at play in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasars have been well studied, but relatively little has been done to separately investigate the contributions of these ionization mechanisms within the host galaxy and outflowing components. Using Gemini integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data, we study the ionization properties of these two components in four nearby ($z \lesssim$ 0.2) radio-quiet Type 1 quasars. Emission line ratios and widths are employed to identify the dominant ionization mechanisms for the host and outflow components in each object. We find tha…
We study the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of a z=0.54 simulated dwarf galaxy using hydroART simulations. We present our analysis methods, which emulate observations, including objective absorption line detection, apparent optical depth (AOD) measurements, Voigt profile (VP) decomposition, and ionization modeling. By comparing the inferred CGM gas properties from the absorption lines directly to the gas selected by low ionization HI and MgII, and by higher ionization CIV and OVI absorption, we examine how well observational analysis methods recover the "true" properties of CGM gas. In this dwarf…
The massive young stellar object S255IR NIRS3 embedded in the star forming core SMA1 has been recently observed with a luminosity burst, which is conjectured as a disc-mediated variable accretion event. In this context, it is imperative to characterize the gas properties around the massive young stellar object. With this in mind, we carried out high angular resolution observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter and submillimeter Array and imaged the 900 $μm$ dust continuum and the CH$_3$CN $J$=19$-$18 $K$=0$-$10 transitions of S255IR SMA1. The integrated CH$_3$CN emission exhibits an elonga…
We present the results of a single dish survey toward 95 VeLLOs in optically thick (HCN 1-0) and thin ($\rm N_2H^+$ 1-0) lines performed for the purpose of understanding the physical processes of inward motions in the envelopes of the VeLLOs and characterizing their true nature. The normalized velocity differences ($δV_{HCN}$) between the peak velocities of the two lines were derived for 41 VeLLOs detected in both lines. The $δV$ distribution of these VeLLOs is found to be significantly skewed to the blue, indicating the dominance of infalling motions in their envelopes. The infall speeds were…
The energy spectrum of electrons produced in molecular gas by interstellar cosmic rays (CRs) is rigorously calculated as a function of gas column density $N$ traversed by the CRs. This allows us to accurately compute the local value of the secondary ionization rate of molecular hydrogen, $ζ_{\rm sec}(N)$, as a function of the local primary ionization rate, $ζ_p(N)$. The ratio $ζ_{\rm sec}/ζ_p$ increases monotonically with $N$, and can considerably exceed the value of $\approx0.67$ commonly adopted in the literature. For sufficiently soft interstellar spectra, the dependence $ζ_{\rm sec}/ζ_p$ v…
We investigate the origin of the extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) and its predominant ionization mechanisms in five nearby (17-46 Mpc) low-mass ($10^9\text{-}10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) edge-on disk galaxies: ESO 157-49, ESO 469-15, ESO 544-27, IC 217, and IC 1553. We acquired Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectroscopy and deep narrowband H$α$ imaging of our sample galaxies. To investigate the connection between in-plane star formation and eDIG, we perform a photometric analysis of our narrowband H$α$ imaging. We measure eDIG scale heights of $h_{z\text{eDIG}} = 0.59 …
We study the thermal formation history of four simulated galaxies that were shown in Naab et al. (2007) to reproduce a number of observed properties of elliptical galaxies. The temperature of the gas in the galaxies is steadily increasing with decreasing redshift, although much of the gas has a cooling time shorter than the Hubble time. The gas is being heated and kept hot by gravitational heating processes through the release of potential energy from infalling stellar clumps. The energy is dissipated in supersonic collisions of infalling gas lumps with the ambient gas and through the dynamica…
The formation of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) is an unavoidable outcome of galaxy evolution via successive mergers. However, the mechanism that drives their orbital evolution from parsec separations down to the gravitational wave (GW) dominated regime is poorly understood, and their final fate is still unclear. If such binaries are embedded in gas-rich and turbulent environments, as observed in remnants of galaxy mergers, the interaction with gas clumps (such as molecular clouds) may efficiently drive their orbital evolution. Using numerical simulations, we test this hypothesis by study…
Complex A is a high-velocity cloud that is traversing through the Galactic halo toward the Milky Way's disk. We combine both new and archival Green Bank Telescope observations to construct a spectroscopically resolved HI~21-cm map of this entire complex at a $17.1\lesssim\log{\left({N_{\rm HI},\,1σ}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\right)}\lesssim17.9$ sensitivity for a ${\rm FWHM}=20~{\rm km}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$ line and $Δθ=9.1\,{\rm arcmins}$ or $17\lesssimΔd_θ\lesssim30~\rm pc$ spatial resolution. We find that that Complex A is has a Galactic standard of rest frame velocity gradient of $Δ\rm v_{GSR}/ΔL=25~{\rm km…
The emission-line intensity ratios are used to distinguish the main sources of gas ionization to study the state of galactic interstellar medium (ISM). In intermediate cases, when the contributions of radiation from some sources mix, the identification becomes uncertain. As an extra parameter, the gas velocity dispersion in the line-of-sight can be added to classical diagnostic diagrams (i.e., "BPT-sigma" relations) to help finding an appropriate solution. The minimum distance from the curve that bounds the H II-type ionization region for each point in BPT-sigma diagram can be used to characte…
The high ionization-state ions trace the hot gases in the universe, of which gaseous halos around galaxies are a major contributor. Following Qu & Bregman (2018), we calculate the gaseous halo contribution to the observed column density distributions for these ions by convolving the gaseous halo model with the observed stellar mass function. The predicted column density distribution reproduces the general shape of the observed column density distribution -- a broken power law with the break point at $\log N=14.0$ for {\OVI}. Our modeling suggests that the high column density systems originate …
[Abridged] The ionization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), by ultraviolet (UV) photons from massive stars is expected to account for a large fraction of the heating of neutral gas in galaxies. Evaluation of this proposal, however, has been limited by our ability to directly compare observational diagnostics to the results of a molecular model describing PAH ionization. The objective of this article is to take advantage of the most recent values of molecular parameters derived from laboratory experiments and quantum chemical calculations on PAHs and provide a detailed comparison betw…
We present numerical computations and analytic scaling relations for interstellar ion-molecule gas phase chemistry down to very low metallicities ($ 10^{-3} \times$ solar), and/or up to high driving ionization rates. Relevant environments include the cool interstellar medium (ISM) in low-metallicity dwarf galaxies, early enriched clouds at the reionization and Pop-II star formation era, and in dense cold gas exposed to intense X-ray or cosmic-ray sources. We focus on the behavior for H$_2$, CO, CH, OH, H$_2$O and O$_2$, at gas temperatures $\sim 100$ K, characteristic of a cooled ISM at low me…
The oxygen-bearing molecular ions OH+, H2O+, and H3O+ are key species that probe the ionization rate of (partially) molecular gas that is ionized by X-rays and cosmic rays permeating the interstellar medium. We report Herschel far-infrared and submillimeter spectroscopic observations of OH+ in Mrk 231, showing both ground-state P-Cygni profiles, and excited line profiles with blueshifted absorption wings extending up to ~1000 km s^{-1}. In addition, OH+ probes an excited component peaking at central velocities, likely arising from the torus probed by the OH centimeter-wave megamaser. Four line…
The Milky Way is acquiring gas from infalling high-velocity clouds. The material enters a disk-halo interface that in many places is populated with HI clouds that have been ejected from the disk through processes linked to star formation. The Smith Cloud is an extraordinary example of a high-velocity cloud that is bringing $>10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ of relatively low metallicity gas into the Milky Way. It may be part of a larger stream, components of which are now passing through the disk.
The intracluster medium (ICM), as a magnetized and highly ionized fluid, provides an ideal laboratory to study plasma physics under extreme conditions that cannot yet be achieved on Earth. NGC 1404 is a bright elliptical galaxy that is being gas stripped as it falls through the ICM of the Fornax Cluster. We use the new {\sl Chandra} X-ray observations of NGC 1404 to study ICM microphysics. The interstellar medium (ISM) of NGC 1404 is characterized by a sharp leading edge, 8 kpc from the galaxy center, and a short downstream gaseous tail. Contact discontinuities are resolved on unprecedented sp…
We use deep spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide-Field-Camera 3 (WFC3) IR grisms combined with broad-band photometry to study the stellar populations, gas ionization and chemical abundances in star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 1.1-2.3$. The data stem from the CANDELS Lyman-$α$ Emission At Reionization (CLEAR) survey. At these redshifts the grism spectroscopy measure the [OII] 3727, 3729, [OIII] 4959, 5008, H-$β$ strong emission features, which constrain the ionization parameter and oxygen abundance of the nebular gas. We compare the line flux measurements to predictions from u…
SRG/eROSITA PV observations revealed the A3391/95 cluster system and the Northern Clump (MCXC J0621.7-5242 galaxy cluster) are aligning along a cosmic filament in soft X-rays, similarly to what has been seen in simulations before. We aim to understand the dynamical state of the Northern Clump as it enters the atmosphere ($3\times R_{200}$) of A3391. We analyzed joint eROSITA, XMM-Newton, and Chandra observations to probe the morphological, thermal, and chemical properties of the Northern Clump from its center out to a radius of 988 kpc ($R_{200}$). We utilized the ASKAP/EMU radio data, DECam o…
Whether high mass stars continue to accrete material beyond the formation of an HII region is still an open question. Ionized infall and outflow have been seen in some sources, but their ties to the surrounding molecular gas are not well constrained. We aim to quantify the ionized and molecular gas dynamics in a high mass star forming region (K3-50A) and their interaction. We present CARMA observations of the 3mm continuum, H41α, and HCO+ emission, and VLA continuum observations at 23 GHz and 14.7 GHz to quantify the gas and its dynamics in K3-50A. We find large scale dynamics consistent with …
The ionization fraction plays a key role in the physics and chemistry of the neutral interstellar medium, from controlling the coupling of the gas to the magnetic field to allowing fast ion-neutral reactions that drive interstellar chemistry. Most estimations of the ionization fraction have relied on deuterated species such as DCO+, whose detection is limited to dense cores representing an extremely small fraction of the volume of the giant molecular clouds they are part of. As large field-of-view hyperspectral maps become available, new tracers may be found. We search for the best observable …
Quasar absorption systems encode a wealth of information about the abundances, ionization structure, and physical conditions in intergalactic and circumgalactic media. Simple (often single-phase) photoionization models are frequently used to decode such data. Using five discrete absorbers from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH) that exhibit a wide range of detected ions (e.g., Mg II, S II--S VI, O II--O VI, Ne VIII), we show several examples where single-phase ionization models cannot reproduce the full set of measured column densities. To explore models that can self-consist…
Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic effects that rule the coupling of the magnetic field to the circumstellar gas during the low-mass star formation process depend heavily on the local physical conditions, such as the ionization fraction of the gas. The purpose of this work is to observationally characterize the level of ionization of the circumstellar gas at small envelope radii and investigate its relation to the efficiency of the coupling between the star-forming gas and the magnetic field in the Class 0 protostar B335. We have obtained molecular line emission maps of B335 with ALMA, which we use…
In the current epoch, one of the main mechanisms driving the growth of galaxy clusters is the continuous accretion of group-scale halos. In this process, the ram pressure applied by the hot intracluster medium on the gas content of the infalling group is responsible for stripping the gas from its dark-matter halo, which gradually leads to the virialization of the infalling gas in the potential well of the main cluster. Using deep wide-field observations of the poor cluster Hydra A/A780 with XMM-Newton and Suzaku, we report the discovery of an infalling galaxy group 1.1 Mpc south of the cluster…
We examine the properties and evolution of a simulated polar disc galaxy. This galaxy is comprised of two orthogonal discs, one of which contains old stars (old stellar disc), and the other, containing both younger stars and the cold gas (polar disc) of the galaxy. By exploring the shape of the inner region of the dark matter halo, we are able to confirm that the halo shape is a oblate ellipsoid flattened in the direction of the polar disc. We also note that there is a twist in the shape profile, where the innermost 3 kpc of the halo flattens in the direction perpendicular to the old disc, and…
We present the results of deep Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray imaging and spatially-resolved spectroscopy of Abell 2256, a nearby (z=0.058) galaxy cluster experiencing multiple mergers and displaying a rich radio morphology dominated by a large relic. The X-ray data reveals three subclusters: (i) the `main cluster'; (ii) the remnant of an older merger in the east of the cluster with a ~ 600 kpc long tail; (iii) a bright, bullet-like, low-entropy infalling system, with a large line-of-sight velocity component. The low-entropy system displays a 250 kpc long cold front with a break and an intriguin…
We use the results of relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of jet-ISM interactions in a galaxy with a radio-loud AGN to quantify the extent of ionization in the central few kpcs of the gaseous galactic disc. We perform post-process radiative transfer of AGN radiation through the simulated gaseous jet-perturbed disc to estimate the extent of photo-ionization by the AGN with an incident luminosity of $10^{45}~\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$. We also map the gas that is collisionally ionized due to shocks driven by the jet. The analysis was carried out for simulations with similar jet power ($10^{45}~\mat…
We present the results of deep Chandra, XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 85, which is currently undergoing at least two mergers, and in addition shows evidence for gas sloshing which extends out to r ~ 600 kpc. One of the two infalling subclusters, to the south of the main cluster center, has a dense, X-ray bright cool core and a tail extending to the southeast. The northern edge of this tail is strikingly smooth and sharp (narrower than the Coulomb mean free path of the ambient gas) over a length of 200 kpc, while toward the southwest the boundary of the t…
The ionization state and oxygen abundance distribution in a sample of polar-ring galaxies (PRGs) were studied from the long-slit spectroscopic observations carried out with the SCORPIO-2 focal reducer at the Russian 6-m telescope. The sample consists of 15 PRGs classified as `the best candidates' in the SDSS-based Polar Ring Catalogue. The distributions of line-of-sight velocities of stellar and gaseous components have given kinematic confirmation of polar structures in 13 galaxies in the sample. We show that ionization by young stars dominates in the external parts of polar discs, while shock…
We analyze the physical conditions in the low-ionization component of starburst outflows (in contrast to the high-ionization wind fluid observed in X-rays), based on new Keck/LRIS spectroscopy of partially resolved absorption troughs in near-ultraviolet and optical spectra of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. The large velocity width and blueshift present in seven, atomic transitions indicate a macroscopic velocity gradient within the outflowing gas. The \mgII 2796, 2803 (and \feII 2587, 2600) doublet lines in these data constrains the gas kinematics better than the heavily blended \nad 5892, 9…
We present a detailed analysis of a disc galaxy forming in a high-resolution fully cosmological simulation to investigate the nature of the outer regions of discs and their relevance for the disc formation process. Specifically, we focus on the phenomenon of misaligned disc components and find that the outer disc warp is a consequence of the misalignment between the inner disc and the surrounding hot gaseous halo. As the infalling cold gas sinks toward the centre of the galaxy, it is strongly torqued by the hot gas halo. By the time the fresh gas reaches the central disc-forming region its ang…
