We propose a non-magnetic, pseudospin-based version of a spin valve, in which the pseudospin polarization in neighboring regions of a graphene bilayer is controlled by external gates. Numerical calculations demonstrate a large on-off ratio of such a device. This finding holds promise for the realization of pseudospintronics: a form of electronics based upon the manipulation of pseudospin analogous to the control of physical spin in spintronics applications.
The two-dimensional electron systems in graphene and in topological insulators are described by massless Dirac equations. Although the two systems have similar Hamiltonians, they are polar opposites in terms of spin-orbit coupling strength. We briefly review the status of efforts to achieve long spin relaxation times in graphene with its weak spin-orbit coupling, and to achieve large current-induced spin polarizations in topological-insulator surface states that have strong spin-orbit coupling. We also comment on differences between the magnetic responses and dilute-moment coupling properties …

Electronic states in 2D materials can exhibit pseudospin degrees of freedom, which allow for unique carrier-field interaction scenarios. Here, we investigate ultrafast sublattice pseudospin relaxation in graphene by means of polarization-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Comparison with microscopic Boltzmann simulations allows to determine a lifetime of the optically aligned pseudospin distribution of $12\pm 2\,\text{fs}$. This experimental approach extends the toolbox of graphene pseudospintronics, providing novel means to investigate pseudospin dynamics in active devices or under exte…
Zigzag phosphorene nanoribbons are metallic owing to the edge states, whose energies are inside the gap and far from the bulk bands. We show that -- through electrical manipulation of edge states -- electron propagation can be restricted to one of the ribbon edges or, in case of bilayer phosphorene nanoribbons, to one of the layers. This finding implies that edge and layer can be regarded as tunable equivalents of the spin-one-half degree of freedom, i.e., the pseudospin. In both layer- and edge-pseudospin schemes, we propose and characterize a pseudospin field-effect transistor, which can gen…
We show that the surface states of pristine 3D topological insulators (TIs) are analogs of ferromagnetic half metals due to complete polarization of an emergent momentum independent pseudospin (SU(2)) degree of freedom on the surface. To put this claim on firm footing, we present results for TI surfaces perpendicular to the crystal growth axis, which clearly show that the tunneling conductance between two such TI surfaces of the same TI material is dominated by this half metallic behavior leading to physics reminiscent of a spin-valve. Further using the generalized tunnel magnetoresistance der…
In graphene, the pseudospin and the valley flavor arise as new types of quantum degrees of freedom due to the honeycomb lattice comprising two sublattices (A and B) and two inequivalent Dirac points (K and K') in the Brillouin zone, respectively. Unique electronic properties of graphene result in striking phenomena such as Klein tunnelling, Veselago lens, and valley-polarized currents. Here, we investigate the roles of the pseudospin and the valley in electron scattering at graphene edges and show that they are strongly correlated with charge density modulations of short-wavelength oscillation…
Spin selective nature of spin-filter tunnel junctions can be integrated with conventional metallic ferromagnets to regulate spin polarized quasiparticles in superconducting devices. We report fabrication of pseudo spin-valve device made with a bilayer of nitride spin-filter tunnel barrier (DyN or GdN) and a transition metal ferromagnet (Co and Gd). We show resistance switching in these devices corresponding to parallel and antiparallel configuration of their mutual magnetization direction. With optimal deposition process partial nitridation of the Co layer can be achieved. The magnetically dea…
We investigate the unusual features of the quantum transport in gapped monolayer graphene, which is in a pseudospin symmetry-broken state with a net perpendicular pseudomagnetization. Using these pseudoferromagnets (PFs), we propose a perfect pseudospin valve effect that can be used for realizing pseudospintronics in monolayer graphene. The peculiarity of the associated effects of pseudo spin injection and pseudo spin accumulation are also studied. We further demonstrate the determining effect of the sublattice pseudospin degree of freedom on Andreev reflection and the associated proximity eff…
Strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene grown on tungsten disulfide (WS2) has been recently observed, leading to energy gap opening by SOI. Energy gap in graphene may also be induced by sublattice symmetry breaking (SSB) where energy level in A-sublattice is not equal to that in B-sublattice. SSB-gap may be produced by growing graphene on hexagonal boron nitride or silicon carbide. In this work, we investigate transport property in a SOI/SSB/SOI gapped graphene junction, focusing the effect of interplay of SOI and SSB. We find that, lattice-pseudospin polarization (L-PSP) can be contro…
We study spin-valley and lattice-pseudo spin currents in a dual ferromagnetic-gated silicene-based junction. Silicene has buckled atomic structure which allows us to take sublattice-dependent ferromagnetism into account in the investigation. One of the study results show that transmission at the junctions exhibits anisotropic property only in anti-parallel cases. Interestingly, the studied junctions can be switched from a pure spin-polarizer to a pure valley-polarizer by reversing directions of exchange fields in the parallel junctions. The perfect control of spin-valley currents can be done o…
We investigate a spin-full double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to the leads in a pseudospin valve configuration. The interplay of interaction and interference produces in the stability diagram a rich variety of resonances, modulated by the system parameters. In presence of ferromagnetic leads and pseudospin anisotropy, those resonances split, turn into dips and acquire a Fano shape thus revealing a synthetic spin-orbit coupling induced on the DQD. A set of rate equations derived for a minimal model captures those features. The model accurately matches the numerical results obtained for the full s…
Monolayer graphene with an energy gap presents a pseudospin symmetry broken ferromagnet with a perpendicular pseudomagnetization whose direction is switched by altering the type of doping between n and p. We demonstrate an electrical current switching effect in pseudospin version of a spin valve in which two pseudoferromagnetic regions are contacted through a normal graphene region. The proposed structure exhibits a pseudomagnetoresistance, defined as the relative difference of resistances of parallel and antiparallel alignments of the pseudomagnetizations, which can be tuned to unity. This pe…
Quantum dot spin valves are characterized by exchange fields which induce spin precession and generate current spin resonances even in absence of spin splitting. Analogous effects have been studied in double quantum dots, in which the orbital degree of freedom, the pseudospin, replaces the spin in the valve configuration. We generalize, now, this setup to allow for arbitrary spin and orbital polarization of the leads, thus obtaining an even richer variety of current resonances, stemming from the precession dynamics of entangled spin and pseudospin. We observe for both vectors a delicate interp…
The coupling of charge carrier motion and pseudospin via chirality for massless Dirac fermions in monolayer graphene has generated dramatic consequences, such as the unusual quantum Hall effect and Klein tunneling. In bilayer graphene, charge carriers are massive Dirac fermions with a finite density of states at zero energy. Because of their non-relativistic nature, massive Dirac fermions can provide an even better test bed with which to clarify the importance of chirality in transport measurement than massless Dirac fermions in monolayer graphene. Here, we report an electronic cloaking effect…
The advent of few-layer graphenes has given rise to a new family of two-dimensional systems with emergent electronic properties governed by relativistic quantum mechanics. The multiple carbon sublattices endow the electronic wavefunctions with pseudospin, a lattice analog of the relativistic electron spin, while the multilayer structure leads to electric field effect tunable electronic bands. Here we use these properties to realize giant conductance oscillations in ballistic trilayer graphene Fabry-Perot interferometers, which result from phase coherent transport through resonant bound states …
Despite much anticipation of valleytronics as a candidate to replace the ageing CMOS-based information processing, its progress is severely hindered by the lack of practical ways to manipulate valley polarization all-electrically in an electrostatic setting. Here we propose a class of all-electric-controlled valley filter, valve and logic gate based on the valley-contrasting transport in a merging Dirac cones system. The central mechanism of these devices lies on the pseudospin-assisted quantum tunneling which effectively quenches the transport of one valley when its pseudospin configuration m…
van der Waals heterostructures assembled from atomically thin crystals are ideal model systems to study spin-orbital coupled transport because they exhibit a strong interplay between spin, lattice and valley degrees of freedom that can be manipulated by strain, electric bias and proximity effects. The recently predicted spin-helical regime in graphene on transition metal dichalcogenides, in which spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom are locked together [M. Offidani et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 196801 (2017)], suggests their potential application in spintronics. Here, by deriving an Eilenberg…
