We calculate the $O(α_s^2)$ gluonic operator matrix elements for the twist--2 operators, which contribute to the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients in unpolarized deeply inelastic scattering in the region $Q^2 \gg m^2$, up to the linear terms in the dimensional parameter $\varepsilon$, ($D= 4 + \varepsilon$). These quantities are required for the description of parton distribution functions in the variable flavor number scheme (VFNS). The $O(α_s^2 \varepsilon)$ terms contribute at the level of the $O(α_s^3)$ corrections through renormalization. We also comment on additional terms, which have to be considered in the fixed (FFNV) and variable flavor number scheme, adopting the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme for the running coupling constant.
We study the gluonic phase in a two-flavor color superconductor as a function of the ratio of the gap over the chemical potential mismatch,$Δ/δμ$. We find that the gluonic phase resolves the chromomagnetic instability encountered in a two-flavor color superconductor for $Δ/δμ< \sqrt{2}$. We also calculate approximately the free energies of the gluonic phase and the single plane-wave LOFF phase and show that the former is favored over the latter for a wide range of coupling strengths.
The phase structure of neutral two-flavor quark matter at nonzero temperature is studied. Our analysis is performed within the framework of a gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and the mean-field approximation. We compute the free energy of the gluonic phase (gluonic cylindrical phase II) in a self-consistent manner and investigate the phase transition from the gluonic phase to the 2SC/g2SC/NQ phases. We briefly consider the phase diagram in the plane of coupling strength versus temperature and discuss the mixed phase consisting of the normal quark and 2SC phases.
We study a typical complete gluonic phase (LGP) in two-flavor color superconductivity (2SC) by calculating the essential cubic and quartic interfering term between the gluonic condensates $<A^{(8)}_{z}>$ and $<A^{(6)}_{z}>$ with a gauged NJL model. It is proven that the coefficient of the cubic interfering term and the vacuum contributions of the cubic and quartic interfering term are all equal to zeroes. The coefficients of the quartic interfering term and the $<A^{(6)}_{z}>$'s quartic self-interaction term at stationary points of LOFF phase are calculated. Comparisons among the effective pot…
In the Ginzburg-Landau approach, we describe a new phase in neutral two-flavor quark matter in which gluonic degrees of freedom play a crucial role. We call it a gluonic phase. In this phase gluonic dynamics cure a chromomagnetic instability in the 2SC solution and lead to spontaneous breakdown of the color gauge symmetry, the electromagnetic U(1), and the rotational SO(3). In other words, the gluonic phase describes an anisotropic medium in which the color and electric superconductivities coexist. Because most of the initial symmetries in this system are spontaneously broken, its dynamics is …
A numerical analysis of several phases in the cold neutral two flavor dense quark matter is realized. In the analysis, besides the normal, single plane wave LOFF, and color superconducting 2SC/g2SC phases, we also include two gluonic phases (the gluonic cylindrical phase II and the gluonic color-spin locked one). It is shown that these two gluonic phases are dynamically realized and, on the basis of this analysis, the phase diagram with respect to the coupling strength in this medium is suggested. In particular, it is shown that the gluonic phases are energetically favorable in a wide region o…
Lepton flavor-violating processes offer interesting possibilities to probe new physics at multi-TeV scale. We discuss those in the framework of effective field theory, emphasizing the role of gluonic operators. Those operators are obtained by integrating out heavy quarks that are kinematically inaccessible at the scale where low-energy experiments take place and make those experiments sensitive to the couplings of lepton flavor changing neutral currents to heavy quarks. We discuss constraints on the Wilson coefficients of those operators from the muon conversion $μ^- + (A,Z) \to e^- + (A,Z)$ a…
We calculate the flavor-singlet contribution to the $B\toη^{(\prime)}$ transition form factors from the gluonic content of the $η^{(\prime)}$ meson in the large-recoil region using the perturbative QCD approach. The formulation for the $η$-$η'$ mixing in the quark-flavor and singlet-octet schemes is compared, and employed to determine the chiral enhancement scales associated with the two-parton twist-3 $η^{(\prime)}$ meson distribution amplitudes. It is found that the gluonic contribution is negligible in the $B\toη$ form factors, and reaches few percents in the $B\toη'$ ones. Its impact on th…
We investigate the gluonic probe to the nucleon-nucleon short range correlation (SRC) in nucleus through heavy flavor production in deep inelastic scattering (DIS). The relevant EMC effects of $F_2^{c\bar c}$ structure function will provide a universality test of the SRCs which have been extensively studied in the quark-channel. These SRCs can also be studied through the sub-threshold production of heavy flavor in $eA$ collisions at the intermediate energy electron-ion collider, including open Charm and $J/ψ$ ($Υ$) production.
We study the gluonic sector of the three-flavor PNJL model by obtaining the adjoint Polyakov loop and the gluon distribution function in the mean-field approximation. Besides, we explore the thermal strange quark pair-production processes, $q\bar {q} \to s\bar {s}$ and $gg \to s \bar {s}$, with the aid of the three-flavor PNJL model. The results help us identify the temperature where the gluonic contribution to the production rate becomes dominant, which is an innovative phenomenon compared with the result obtained in free perturbation theory.
We study the spectrum of light plasmons in the (gapped and gapless) two-flavor color superconducting phases and its connection with the chromomagnetic instabilities and the structure of the ground state. It is revealed that the chromomagnetic instabilities in the 4-7th and 8th gluonic channels correspond to two very different plasmon spectra. These spectra lead us to the unequivocal conclusion about the existence of gluonic condensates (some of which can be spatially inhomogeneous) in the ground state. We also argue that spatially inhomogeneous gluonic condensates should exist in the three-fla…
We calculate the two-mass QCD contributions to the massive operator matrix element $A_{gg,Q}$ at $\mathcal{O} (α_s^3)$ in analytic form in Mellin $N$- and $z$-space, maintaining the complete dependence on the heavy quark mass ratio. These terms are important ingredients for the matching relations of the variable flavor number scheme in the presence of two heavy quark flavors, such as charm and bottom. In Mellin $N$-space the result is given in the form of nested harmonic, generalized harmonic, cyclotomic and binomial sums, with arguments depending on the mass ratio. The Mellin inversion of the…
The $O(α_s^3 n_f T_F^2 C_{A,F})$ terms to the massive gluonic operator matrix elements are calculated for general values of the Mellin variable $N$. These twist-2 matrix elements occur as transition functions in the variable flavor number scheme at NNLO. The calculation uses sum-representations in generalized hypergeometric series turning into harmonic sums. The analytic continuation to complex values of $N$ is provided.
We study the dynamics in phases with vector condensates of gluons (gluonic phases) in dense two-flavor quark matter. These phases yield an example of dynamics in which the Higgs mechanism is provided by condensates of gauge (or gauge plus scalar) fields. Because vacuum expectation values of spatial components of vector fields break the rotational symmetry, it is naturally to have a spontaneous breakdown both of external and internal symmetries in this case. In particular, by using the Ginzburg-Landau approach, we establish the existence of a gluonic phase with both the rotational symmetry and …
We report on recent results obtained for the 3-loop heavy flavor Wilson coefficients in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at general values of the Mellin variable $N$ at larger scales of $Q^2$. These concern contributions to the gluonic ladder-topologies, the transition matrix elements in the variable flavor scheme of $O(n_f T_F^2)$ and $O(T_F^2)$, and first results on higher 3-loop topologies. The knowledge of the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients at 3-loop order is of importance to extract the parton distribution functions and $α_s(M_Z^2)$ in complete NNLO QCD analyses of the world precision da…
The $O(α_s^3 T_F^2 C_F (C_A))$ contributions to the transition matrix element $A_{gg,Q}$ relevant for the variable flavor number scheme at 3--loop order are calculated. The corresponding graphs contain two massive fermion lines of equal mass leading to terms given by inverse binomially weighted sums beyond the usual harmonic sums. In $x$-space two root-valued letters contribute in the iterated integrals in addition to those forming the harmonic polylogarithms. We outline technical details needed in the calculation of graphs of this type, which are as well of importance in the case of two diffe…
We study the effect of charged-Higgs-induced chromomagnetic operator, $Q_{8G}(-) \equiv \bar s σ^{μν} T^a γ_5 d G^a_{μν}$, on the Kaon direct CP violation $Re(ε'/ε)$. Using the matrix element $\langle ππ| O_{8G}(-) | K^0 \rangle$ recently obtained by a large $N_c$ dual QCD approach, we find that if the Kobayashi-Maskawa phase is the origin of CP violation, the charged-Higgs-induced gluon penguin dipole operator in the type-III two-Higgs-doublet model can explain the measured $Re(ε'/ε)$ when the constraints from the relevant low energy flavor physics, such as $ΔB(K)=2$, $B\to X_s γ$, and Kaon i…
By applying chiral-perturbation-theory methods to the QCD sector of the Lorentz-violating Standard-Model Extension, we investigate Lorentz violation in the strong interactions. In particular, we consider the CPT-even pure-gluon operator of the minimal Standard-Model Extension. We construct the lowest-order chiral effective Lagrangian for three as well as two light quark flavors. We develop the power-counting rules and construct the heavy-baryon chiral-perturbation-theory Lagrangian, which we use to calculate Lorentz-violating contributions to the nucleon self energy. Using the constructed effe…
We consider gluonic contributions to the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients at 3-loop order in QCD with two heavy quark lines in the asymptotic region $Q^2 \gg m_{1(2)}^2$. Here we report on the complete result in the case of two equal masses $m_1 = m_2$ for the massive operator matrix element $A_{gg,Q}^{(3)}$, which contributes to the corresponding heavy flavor transition matrix element in the variable flavor number scheme. Nested finite binomial sums and iterated integrals over square-root valued alphabets emerge in the result for this quantity in $N$ and $x$-space, respectively. We also prese…
The quark condensate is calculated within the world-line effective-action formalism, by using for the Wilson loop an ansatz provided by the stochastic vacuum model. Starting with the relation between the quark and the gluon condensates in the heavy-quark limit, we diminish the current quark mass down to the value of the inverse vacuum correlation length, finding in this way a 64%-decrease in the absolute value of the quark condensate. In particular, we find that the conventional formula for the heavy-quark condensate cannot be applied to the c-quark, and that the corrections to this formula ca…
Based on lattice simulations using highly improved staggered quarks for twelve-flavor QCD with several bare fermion masses, we observe a flavor-singlet scalar state lighter than the pion in the correlators of fermionic interpolating operators. The same state is also investigated using correlators of gluonic interpolating operators. Combined with our previous study, that showed twelve-flavor QCD to be consistent with being in the conformal window, we infer that the lightness of the scalar state is due to infrared conformality. This result shed some light on the possibility of a light composite …
We calculate results for K to pi and K to 0 matrix elements to next-to-leading order in 2+1 flavor partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. Results are presented for both the Delta I=1/2 and 3/2 channels, for chiral operators corresponding to current-current, gluonic penguin, and electroweak penguin 4-quark operators. These formulas are useful for studying the chiral behavior of currently available 2+1 flavor lattice QCD results, from which the low energy constants of the chiral effective theory can be determined. The low energy constants of these matrix elements are necessary for an und…
We report on the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the production of two gluonic jets at hadron colliders. In previous work, we discussed gluonic dijet production in the gluon-gluon channel. Here, for the first time, we update our numerical results to include the leading colour contribution to the production of two gluonic jets via quark-antiquark scattering.
We investigate the gluonic pole matrix element contributing to the first $p_T$ moment of the distribution and fragmentation functions in a spectator model. By performing a spectral analysis, we find that for a large class of spectator models, the contribution of gluonic pole matrix elements is non-zero for the distribution correlators, whereas in fragmentation correlators they vanish. This outcome is important in the study of universality for fragmentation functions.
We report on our latest results in the calculation of the two--mass contributions to 3--loop operator matrix elements (OMEs). These OMEs are needed to compute the corresponding contributions to the deep-inealstic scattering structure functions and to generalize the variable flavor number scheme by including both charm and bottom quarks. We present the results for the non-singlet and $A_{gq,Q}$ OMEs, and compare the size of their contribution relative to the single mass case. Results for the gluonic OME $A_{gg,Q}$ are given in the physical case, going beyond those presented in a previous public…
The non-vanishing of gluonic pole matrix elements can explain the appearance of single spin asymmetries in high-energy scattering processes. We use a spectator framework approach to investigate the spectral properties of quark-quark-gluon correlators and use this to study gluonic pole matrix elements. Such matrix elements appear in principle both for distribution functions such as the Sivers function and fragmentation functions such as the Collins function. We find that for a large class of spectator models, the contribution of the gluonic pole matrix element in fragmentation functions vanishe…

We calculate the gluonic massive operator matrix elements in the unpolarized and polarized cases, $A_{gg,Q}(x,μ^2)$ and $ΔA_{gg,Q}(x,μ^2)$, at three-loop order for a single mass. These quantities contribute to the matching of the gluon distribution in the variable flavor number scheme. The polarized operator matrix element is calculated in the Larin scheme. These operator matrix elements contain finite binomial and inverse binomial sums in Mellin $N$-space and iterated integrals over square root-valued alphabets in momentum fraction $x$-space. We derive the necessary analytic relations for the…
We discuss exclusive central production of Higgs boson, quark-antiquark and digluon dijets. Several differential distributions are shown and disussed. Irreducible leading-order $b \bar b $ background to Higgs production is calculated in several kinematical variables. The signal-to-background ratio is shown and several improvements are suggested by imposing cuts on $b$ ($\bar b$) transverse momenta and rapidities. \
We investigate the emergence of single spin asymmetries (SSA) in hard processes using transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution and fragmentation functions. Specifically, the description of SSA involves time reversal-odd functions. Process-dependence (non-universality) in measurements of SSA can be attributed to the non-trivial gauge link structure in the TMD correlator. Finding the appropriate gauge links, however, also enables us to characterize the non-universality
The two-point gauge-invariant correlation function of gluonic field strengths, which is the main input in the stochastic vacuum model, is derived by using its relation to the Green functions of one- and two-gluon gluelumps. These Green functions are found by evaluating the path integrals of one and two gluons confined in the field of an infinitely heavy adjoint source. This allows one to obtain also the terms in the exponential asymptotics of the two-point correlation function, which are produced by fluctuations of the gluons around their mean separation from the source. The pre-exponents are …
We calculate the quarkonic $O(α_s^2)$ massive operator matrix elements $ΔA_{Qg}(N), ΔA_{Qq}^{\rm PS}(N)$ and $ΔA_{qq,Q}^{\rm NS}(N)$ for the twist--2 operators and the associated heavy flavor Wilson coefficients in polarized deeply inelastic scattering in the region $Q^2 \gg m^2$ to $O(\varepsilon)$ in the case of the inclusive heavy flavor contributions. The evaluation is performed in Mellin space, without applying the integration-by-parts method. The result is given in terms of harmonic sums. This leads to a significant compactification of the operator matrix elements and massive Wilson coef…
We explore connections between high energy QCD spin physics and $CP$-odd scalar gluonic operators $\tilde{F}^{μν}F_{μν}$ and $\tilde{F}_{μν}F^{μα}F^ν_α$, the latter being called the Weinberg operator in the context of the nucleons' electric dipole moment. We first introduce the twist-four generalized parton distribution (GPD) associated with the topological operator $F_{μν}\tilde{F}^{μν}$. This has interesting applications in spin physics which go beyond the standard framework in terms of twist-two and twist-three distributions. In the second part, we show that the off-forward matrix element o…
The existence of glueballs is predicted in QCD, the lightest one with quantum numbers J^{PC}=0^{++}, but different calculations do not well agree on its mass in the range below 1800 MeV. Several theoretical schemes have been proposed to cope with the experimental data which often have considerable uncertainties. Further experimental studies of the scalar meson sector are therefore important and we discuss recent proposals to study leading clusters in gluon jets and charmless B-decays to serve this purpose.
Higgs production in association with three jets via gluon fusion (GF) is an important channel for the measurement of the CP-properties of the Higgs particle at the LHC. In this letter, we go beyond the heavy top effective theory approximation and include at LO the full mass dependence of the top- and bottom-quark contributions. We consider the dominant sub-channel gg -> H ggg which involves the manipulation of massive rank-5 hexagon integrals. Furthermore, we present results for several differential distributions and show deviations from the effective theory as large as 100% at high pT for lig…
We present an analysis of constraints on two types of CP-odd electron-gluonic operators $(\bar{e}iγ^5 e)G_{μν}^a G^{aμν}$ and $(\bar{e}e)G_{μν}^a \tilde{G}^{aμν}$ from current and future electric dipole moment (EDM) experiments. The recent result from the ACME experiment using ThO molecules is used to derive an impressive lower bound on the effective scale for $(\bar{e}iγ^5 e)G_{μν}^a G^{aμν}$ at 8 TeV, assuming a QCD one-loop factor and no helicity suppression from new physics. One interesting aspect is that $(\bar{e}iγ^5 e)G_{μν}^a G^{aμν}$ contributes to the observable EDM in ThO experiment…
Currently, the long-standing issue concerning the size of the gluonic content of the eta' and eta mesons remains unsettled. With this in mind we consider the central exclusive production (CEP) of eta', eta meson pairs in the perturbative regime, applying the Durham pQCD-based model of CEP and the `hard exclusive' formalism to evaluate the meson production subprocess. We calculate for the first time the relevant parton-level processes gg --> qqbar gg and gg --> gggg, where the final-state gg and qqbar pairs form a pseudoscalar flavour-singlet state. We observe that these amplitudes display some…
We apply a fully automated extension of the $R^*$-operation capable of calculating higher-loop anomalous dimensions of n-point Green's functions of arbitrary, possibly non-renormalisable, local Quantum Field Theories. We focus on the case of the CP-violating Weinberg operator of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory whose anomalous dimension is so far known only at one loop. We calculate the two-loop anomalous dimension in full QCD and the three-loop anomalous dimensions in the limit of pure Yang-Mills theory. We find sizeable two-loop and large three-loop corrections, due to the appearanc…
Gluon-gluon to photon-photon scattering $gg \to γγ$ offers to the LHC experiments a uniquely powerful probe of dimension-8 operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) that are quadratic in both the electromagnetic and gluonic field-strength tensors, such as would appear in the Born-Infeld extension of the Standard Model (SM). We use 13-TeV ATLAS data on the production of isolated photon pairs to set lower limits on the scales of dimension-8 operators $M \gtrsim 1$~TeV, and discuss the prospective sensitivities of possible future hadron colliders.
We consider photon pair production in hadronic collisions at large mass and small transverse momentum of the pair, assuming that factorization in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions applies. The unpolarized cross section is found to have azimuthal angular dependencies that are generated by a gluonic version of the Boer-Mulders function. In addition, the single-transversely polarized cross section is sensitive to the gluon Sivers function. We present simple numerical estimates for the Boer-Mulders and Sivers effects in diphoton production at RHIC and find that the proces…
We present the results of recent work on the central exclusive production of meson pairs. We concentrate on the case of flavour-singlet pseudoscalar mesons eta, eta' and show that the central exclusive process, as modelled using a recent novel application of the 'hard exclusive' perturbative formalism, is potentially highly sensitive to the size of the gluon content of these states. We also discuss the exclusive production of meson pairs in the lower mass region, and present the first results of the new Dime Monte Carlo.
The thermodynamical properties of a pure Yang-Mills theory SU(N) is described by a gas of gluonic quasiparticles with temperature dependent mass $m(T)$ and a bag function $B(T).$ The analytic behavior of $m(T)$ and the pressure $p$ at high $T$ are derived and constraints on the parameters defining $B(T)$ are discussed. The trace anomaly $θ=ρ-3p$ is evaluated in the high $T$ domain: it is dominated by a quadratic behavior $θ=nKT^{2},$ where $n=2(N^{2}-1)$ is the number of degrees of freedom and $K$ is an integration constant which does not depend on the bag function $B(T)$. This is a general re…
Gluonic pole matrix elements explain the appearance of single spin asymmetries (SSA) in high-energy scattering processes. They involve a combination of operators which are odd under time reversal (T-odd). Such matrix elements appear in principle both for parton distribution functions and parton fragmentation functions. We show that for parton fragmentation functions these gluonic pole matrix elements vanish as a consequence of the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes in Quantum Chromodynamics. This result is important in the study of the universality of transverse momentum dependent (TM…
Recent results on the calculation of 3-loop massive operator matrix elements in case of one and two heavy quark masses are reported. They concern the $O(n_f T_F^2 C_{F,A})$ and $O(T_F^2 C_{F,A})$ gluonic corrections, two-mass quarkonic moments, and ladder- and Benz-topologies. We also discuss technical aspects of the calculations.
In high energy hadronic collisions, a general CP-violating Higgs boson $Φ$ with accompanying jets can be efficiently produced via gluon fusion, which is mediated by heavy quark loops. In this letter we study the dominant sub-channel $ gg \to Φggg$ of the gluon fusion production process with triple real emission corrections at order $α_s^5$. We go beyond the heavy top limit approximation and include the full mass dependence of the top- and bottom-quark contributions. Furthermore, we show within a toy-model scenario that bottom-quark loop contributions in combination with large values of $\tan β…
