We present kinematic simulations of a galactic dynamo model based on the large scale differential rotation and the small scale helical fluctuations due to supernova explosions. We report for the first time direct numerical simulations of the full galactic dynamo using an unparameterized global approach. We argue that the scale of helicity injection is large enough to be directly resolved rather than parameterized. While the actual superbubble characteristics can only be approached, we show that numerical simulations yield magnetic structures which are close both to the observations and to the previous parameterized mean field models. In particular, the quadrupolar symmetry and the spiraling properties of the field are reproduced. Moreover, our simulations show that the presence of a vertical inflow plays an essential role to increase the magnetic growth rate. This observation could indicate an important role of the downward flow (possibly linked with galactic fountains) in sustaining galactic magnetic fields.
Large-scale magnetic fields in stars and galaxies are thought to arise by mean-field dynamo action due to the combined influence of both helical turbulence and shear. Those systems are also highly conducting and the turbulence therein leads to a fluctuation (or small-scale) dynamo which more rapidly amplifies magnetic field fluctuations on the eddy scales and smaller. Will this then interfere with and suppress the mean (or large-scale) field growth? Using direct numerical simulations of helical turbulence (with and without shear), we identify a novel quasi-kinematic large-scale dynamo which op…
The origin and evolution of magnetic fields in the Universe is still an open question. Their observations in galaxies suggest strong magnetic fields already at high redshift as well as at present time. However, neither primordial magnetic fields nor battery processes can account for such high field strengths, which implies the presence of a dynamo process with rapid growth rates in high-redshift galaxies and subsequent maintenance against decay. We investigate the particular role played by feedback mechanisms in creating strong fluid turbulence, allowing for a magnetic dynamo to emerge. Perfor…
We study the spatially resolved stellar kinematics of two star-forming galaxies at z = 0.1 from the larger DYnamics of Newly Assembled Massive Objects (DYNAMO) sample. These galaxies, which have been characterized by high levels of star formation and large ionized gas velocity dispersions, are considered possible analogs to high-redshift clumpy disks. They were observed using the GMOS instrument in integral field spectroscopy (IFS) mode at the Gemini Observatory with high spectral resolution (R=5400, equivalent to 24 km/s at the observed wavelengths) and 6 hour exposure times in order to measu…
The kinematic dynamo (KD) describes the growth of magnetic fields generated by the flow of a conducting medium in the limit of vanishing backaction of the fields onto the flow. The KD is therefore an important model system for understanding astrophysical magnetism. Here, the mathematical correspondence between the KD and a specific stochastic differential equation (SDE) viewed from the perspective of the supersymmetric theory of stochastics (STS) is discussed. The STS is a novel, approximation-free framework to investigate SDEs. The correspondence reported here permits insights from the STS to…
Using direct numerical simulations (DNS) we verify that in the kinematic regime, a turbulent helical dynamo grows in such a way that the magnetic energy spectrum remains to high precision shape-invariant, i.e., at each wavenumber $k$ the spectrum grows with the same growth rate. Signatures of large-scale dynamo action can be identified through the excess of magnetic energy at small $k$, of one of the two oppositely polarized constituents. Also a suitably defined planar average of the magnetic field can be chosen such that its rms value isolates the strength of the mean field. However, these di…
By following the Kazantsev theory and taking into account both microscopic and turbulent diffusion of magnetic fields, we develop a unified treatment of the kinematic and nonlinear stages of turbulent dynamo, and study the dynamo process for a full range of magnetic Prandtl number Pm and ionization fractions. We find a striking similarity between the dependence of dynamo behavior on Pm in a conducting fluid and R (a function of ionization fraction) in partially ionized gas. In a weakly ionized medium, the kinematic stage is largely extended, including not only exponential growth but a new regi…
Chicone et al [Comm Math Phys (1997)] investigated existence of fast dynamos by analyzing the spectrum kinematic magnetic dynamo. In real non-degenerate branch of the spectrum, the kinematic dynamo operator lies on a compact Riemannian 2D space of constant negative curvature. Here, generalization of Marklund and Clarkson [MNRAS (2005)], general relativistic GR-MHD dynamo equation to include mean-field dynamos is obtained. In the absence of kinetic helicity, adiabatic constant $γ={1/2}$ and gravitational colapse of negative Riemann curvature of spatial sections enhance dynamo effect $\frac{δB}{…
Zeldovich's stretch-twist fold (STF) dynamo provided a breakthrough in conceptual understanding of fast dynamos, including fluctuation or small scale dynamos. We study the evolution and saturation behaviour of two types of Baker's map dynamos, which have been used to model Zeldovich's STF dynamo process. Using such maps allows one to analyze dynamos at much higher magnetic Reynolds numbers $R_M$ as compared to direct numerical simulations. In the 2-strip map dynamo there is constant constructive folding while the 4-strip map dynamo also allows the possibility of field reversal. Incorporating a…
Small-scale dynamos play important roles in modern astrophysics, especially on Galactic and extragalactic scales. Owing to dynamo action, purely hydrodynamic Kolmogorov turbulence hardly exists and is often replaced by hydromagnetic turbulence. Understanding the size of dissipative magnetic structures is important in estimating the time scale of Galactic scintillation and other observational and theoretical aspects of interstellar and intergalactic small-scale dynamos. Here we show that, during the kinematic phase of the small-scale dynamo, the cutoff wavenumber of the magnetic energy spectra …
Small-scale turbulent dynamo is responsible for the amplification of magnetic fields on scales smaller than the driving scale of turbulence in diverse astrophysical media. Most earlier dynamo theories concern the kinematic regime and small-scale magnetic field amplification. Here we review our recent progress in developing the theories for the nonlinear dynamo and the dynamo regime in a partially ionized plasma. The importance of reconnection diffusion of magnetic fields is identified for both the nonlinear dynamo and magnetic field amplification during gravitational contraction. For the dynam…
The turbulent dynamo is a powerful mechanism that converts turbulent kinetic energy to magnetic energy. A key question regarding the magnetic field amplification by turbulence, is, on what scale, $k_{\rm p}$, do magnetic fields become most concentrated? There has been some disagreement about whether $k_{\rm p}$ is controlled by the viscous scale, $k_ν$ (where turbulent kinetic energy dissipates), or the resistive scale, $k_η$ (where magnetic fields dissipate). Here we use direct numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence to measure characteristic scales in the kinematic phase of t…
Magnetic fields in several astrophysical objects are amplified and maintained by a dynamo mechanism, which is the conversion of the turbulent kinetic energy to magnetic energy. A dynamo that amplifies magnetic fields at scales $<$ the driving scale of turbulence is known as the fluctuation dynamo. We study the properties of the fluctuation dynamo in supersonic turbulent plasmas, which is of relevance to the ISM, structure formation, and lab experiments of laser-plasma turbulence. Using simulations, we explore the properties of the exponentially growing and saturated state of the fluctuation dy…
The magnetic fields in galaxy clusters and probably also in the interstellar medium are believed to be generated by a small-scale dynamo. Theoretically, during its kinematic stage, it is characterized by a Kazantsev spectrum, which peaks at the resistive scale. It is only slightly shallower than the Saffman spectrum that is expected for random and causally connected magnetic fields. Causally disconnected fields have the even steeper Batchelor spectrum. Here we show that all three spectra are present in the small-scale dynamo. During the kinematic stage, the Batchelor spectrum occurs on scales …

The turbulence driven by gravitational instabilities (GIs) can amplify magnetic fields in massive gaseous disks. This GI dynamo may appear in young circumstellar disks, whose weak ionization challenges other amplification routes, as well as in active galactic nuclei. Although regarded as a large-scale dynamo, only local simulations have so far described its kinematic regime. We study the GI dynamo in global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models of accretion disks, focusing on its kinematic phase. We perform resistive MHD simulations with the Pluto code for different radiative cooling times and elec…
The presence of magnetic fields in many astrophysical objects is due to dynamo action, whereby a part of the kinetic energy is converted into magnetic energy. A turbulent dynamo that produces magnetic field structures on the same scale as the turbulent flow is known as the fluctuation dynamo. We use numerical simulations to explore the nonlinear, statistically steady state of the fluctuation dynamo in driven turbulence. We demonstrate that as the magnetic field growth saturates, its amplification and diffusion are both affected by the back-reaction of the Lorentz force upon the flow. The ampli…
Here we explore the role of temporal fluctuations in kinetic helicity on the generation of large-scale magnetic fields in presence of a background linear shear flow. Key techniques involved here are same as in our earlier work \citep[][hereafter paper~I]{JS20}, where we have used the renovating flow based model with shearing waves. Both, the velocity and the helicity fields, are treated as stochastic variables with finite correlation times, $τ$ and $τ_h$, respectively. Growing solutions are obtained when $τ_h > τ$, even when this time-scale separation, characterised by $m=τ_h/τ$, remains below…
(abridged) DYNAMO is a multi-wavelength, spatially-resolved survey of local ($z \sim 0.1$) star-forming galaxies designed to study evolution through comparison with samples at z~2. Half of the sample has integrated H-alpha luminosities of >$10^{42}$ erg/s, the typical lower limit for resolved spectroscopy at z~2. The sample covers a range in stellar mass ($10^9$-$10^{11}$ Msun) and star-formation rate (0.2-100 Msun/yr). In this first paper of a series, we present integral-field spectroscopy of H-alpha emission for the sample of 67 galaxies. We infer gas fractions in our sample as high as ~0.8,…
We use high resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS) to show that helical turbulence can generate significant large-scale fields even in the presence of strong small-scale dynamo action. During the kinematic stage, the unified large/small-scale dynamo grows fields with a shape-invariant eigenfunction, with most power peaked at small scales or large $k$, as in \citet{SB14}. Nevertheless, the large-scale field can be clearly detected as an excess power at small $k$ in the negatively polarized component of the energy spectrum for a forcing with positively polarized waves. Its strength $bar{B…
Hydromagnetic dynamo theory provides the prevailing theoretical description for the origin of magnetic fields in the universe. Here we consider the problem of kinematic, small-scale dynamo action driven by a random, incompressible, non-helical, homogeneous and isotropic flow. In the Kazantsev dynamo model the statistics of the driving flow are assumed to be instantaneously correlated in time. Here we compare the results of the model with the dynamo properties of a simulated flow that has equivalent spatial characteristics as the Kazantsev flow but different temporal statistics. In particular, …
