Total (atomic+nuclear) photoabsorption cross section of $^{52}Cr$ was for the first time measured in the energy range of 8-70 MeV. Experimental data was produced with small statistic and systematic errors. The results deviate from calculations of atomic cross section at photon energies above 40 MeV. Photonuclear cross section in the region of the E1 giant dipole resonance (GDR) clearly exhibits three peaks at 18.9, 20.9 and 23.1 MeV. At higher energies, the measured cross section hints a dip-peak structure at 40-48 MeV.
Inclusive studies of nuclear photoabsorption have provided clear evidence of medium modifications in the properties of hadrons. However, the results have not been explained in a model independent way. A deeper understanding of the situation is expected from a detailed comparison of meson photoproduction from nucleons and from nuclei in exclusive reactions. Recent experimental results are presented.
The energy and nuclear mass dependences of the total hadronic cross section in the energy range 0.5-2.6 GeV have been measured at Bonn using the SAPHIR tagged photon beam. The measurement, performed on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb, provides the first photoabsorption data in the region 1.2-1.7 GeV. The results show a significant reduction of the photoabsorption strength on the bound nucleon compared to the free nucleon case in the whole energy region. Above 1.2 GeV this reduction decreases with the nuclear density and can be interpreted as a signature of a low energy onset of the shadowing effect.
There are some discrepancies in the low energy data on the photoabsorption cross section of $^4$He. We calculate the cross section with realistic nuclear forces and explicitly correlated Gaussian functions. Final state interactions and two- and three-body decay channels are taken into account. The cross section is evaluated in two methods: With the complex scaling method the total absorption cross section is obtained up to the rest energy of a pion, and with the microscopic $R$-matrix method both cross sections $^4$He($γ, p$)$^3$H and $^4$He($γ, n$)$^3$He are calculated below 40\,MeV. Both met…
Recent experimental results for meson photoproduction from nuclei obtained with TAPS at MAMI are analyzed in view of the suppression of the second nucleon resonance region in total photoabsorption. The cross sections can be split into a component from the low density surface region of nuclei and a component which scales more like the nuclear volume. The energy dependence of the surface component is similar to the deuteron cross section, it shows a clear signal for the second resonance peak assigned to the excitation of the P11(1440), D13(1520), and S11(1535). The volume component behaves diffe…
The dipole response of the N=50 nucleus 90Zr was studied in photon-scattering experiments at the electron linear accelerator ELBE with bremsstrahlung produced at kinetic electron energies of 7.9, 9.0, and 13.2 MeV. We identified 189 levels up to an excitation energy of 12.9 MeV. Statistical methods were applied to estimate intensities of inelastic transitions and to correct the intensities of the ground-state transitions for their branching ratios. In this way we derived the photoabsorption cross section up to the neutron-separation energy. This cross section matches well the photoabsorption c…
Inclusive studies of nuclear photoabsorption have provided clear evidence of medium modifications but the results have not yet been explained in a model independent way. A deeper understanding of the situation is anticipated from a detailed experimental study of meson photoproduction from nuclei in exclusive reactions. Recent results on meson production in photonuclear experiments indicate a large difference between quasifree meson production from the nuclear surface and non-quasifree components.

[Background] Photon strength functions are an important ingredient in calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. The relation to the photoabsorption cross section allows to experimentally constrain photon strength functions by investigating the photo-response of atomic nuclei. [Purpose] We determine the photoresponse of $^{66}$Zn in the energy region of 5.6 MeV to 9.9 MeV and analyze the contribution of the "elastic" decay channel back to the ground state. In addition, for the elastic channel electric and magnetic dipole transitions were separated. [Methods] Nuclear reson…

The experiment was carried out with nearly-monoenergetic and linearly polarized photon beams provided by the High-Intensity $γ$-ray Source (HI$γ$S) facility at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). States in $^{11}$B are important for calibrations of NRF measurements, while the properties of $^{40}$Ca levels impact potassium nucleosynthesis in globular clusters. For $^{40}$Ca, we report on improved excitation energies and an unambig…

To get the energy spectrum distribution and cross-sections of emitted light charged particles and explore the nuclear reaction, a experiment of 80.5 MeV/u 12C beam bombarding on C, W, Cu, Au, Pb targets has been carried out at Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Science. 30, 60 and 120 degree relative to the incident beam have been detected using three sets of telescope detectors. The results indicate that there is a tendency that heavier targets have larger double differential cross-sections and the emitted fragments are more likely to go forward. Besides, the decrease of cross-se…

Photoelectrons ejected by 241Am gamma- and X-rays from Co convertors of various thickness were measured with two electrostatic spectrometers.
As a part of our series of studies on deuteron induced reaction on various target materials excitation functions on natural cobalt have been measured by using stacked-foil technique. In these measurements 51Cr, 55;56;57;58Co, 51Cr, 52;54;56Mn and 56;57Ni radioisotopes have been identified. The agreement with previous measurements was acceptable and we could also determine new cross-section data.
Angular distributions of 7Li(7Li,t), (7Li,alpha) and (7Li,6He) reactions were measured for laboratory energies from 2 - 16 MeV. Exact finite range DWBA analyses were performed with the aim to identify contributions of direct processes and to investigate the applicability of DWBA to such few nucleon systems. It turned out that DWBA can be successfully applied to estimate differential and total cross sections of direct transfer processes in 7Li+7Li interaction. The direct mechanism was found to play a dominant role in most of these reactions but significant contributions of other, strongly energ…
Hard-photon (E$_γ>$ 30 MeV) emission from second-chance nucleon-nucleon Bremsstrahlung collisions in intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions is studied employing a realistic thermal model. Photon spectra and yields measured in several nucleus-nucleus reactions are consistent with an emission from hot nuclear systems with temperatures $T\approx$ 4 - 7 MeV. The corresponding caloric curve in the region of excitation energies $ε^\star\approx$ 3{\it A} - 8{\it A} MeV shows lower values of $T$ than those expected for a Fermi fluid.

The provided cross sections from the present investigation are all new, in such a way contribute to the completeness of the experimental database. The experimental cross sections were compared with the theoretical prediction in the TENDL-2019 TALYS based library and with our calculation using ALI…
We report measurements of the cross section and a complete set of polarization observables for the Gamow--Teller ${}^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{12}{\rm N}({\rm g.s.},1^+)$ reaction at a bombarding energy of 296 MeV. The data are compared with distorted wave impulse approximation calculations employing transition form factors normalized to reproduce the observed beta-decay $ft$ value. The cross section is significantly under-predicted by the calculations at momentum transfers $q \gtrsim $ 0.5 ${\rm fm^{-1}}$. The discrepancy is partly resolved by considering the non-locality of the nuclear…

This work was a part of our systematic study on excitation functions of light ion induced nuclear reactions on different target materials. Regarding the cross sections, the alpha induced reactions are not deeply enough investigated. Some of the produced isotopes are of medical interest, others have application in research and industry. The radioisotope $^{117m}$Sn is a very important theranostic (therapeutic + diagnostic) radioisotope, so …
The 7H resonance was produced via one-proton transfer reaction with a 8He beam at 15.4A MeV and a 12C gas target. The experimental setup was based on the active-target MAYA which allowed a complete reconstruction of the reaction kinematics. The characterization of the identified 7H events resulted in a resonance energy of 0.57(+0.42-0.21) MeV above the 3H+4n threshold and a resonance width of 0.09(+0.94-0.06) MeV.
Partial cross sections of the $^{89}$Y(p,$γ$)$^{90}$Zr reaction have been measured to investigate the $γ$-ray strength function in the neutron-magic nucleus $^{90}$Zr. For five proton energies between $E_p=3.65$ MeV and $E_p=4.70$ MeV, partial cross sections for the population of seven discrete states in $^{90}$Zr have been determined by means of in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. Since these $γ$-ray transitions are dominantly of $E1$ character, the present measurement allows an access to the low-lying dipole strength in $^{90}$Zr. A $γ$-ray strength function based on the experimental data could be…
The evolution of the symmetry energy coefficient of the binding energy of hot fragments with increasing excitation is explored in multifragmentation processes following heavy-ion collisions below the Fermi energy. In this work, high-resolution mass spectrometric data on isotopic distributions of projectile-like fragments from collisions of 25 MeV/nucleon 86Kr and 64Ni beams on heavy neutron-rich targets are systematically compared to calculations involving the Statistical Multifragmentation Model. The study reveals a gradual decrease of the symmetry energy coefficient from 25 MeV at the compou…

Differential cross sections and complete sets of polarization observables are presented for the Gamow-Teller $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{p},\vec{n})^{12}{\rm N}({\rm g.s.},1^+)$ reaction at a bombarding energy of 296 MeV with momentum transfers $q$ of 0.1 to $2.2{\rm fm}^{-1}$. The polarization transfer observables are used to deduce the spin-longitudinal cross section, $ID_q$, and spin-transverse cross sections, $ID_p$ and $ID_n$. The data are compared with calculations based on the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) using shell-model wave functions. Significant differences between the experi…
A closed-form thermodynamic pole approach,TPA, is developed for average description of the E1 radiative strength functions using the microcanonical ensemble for initial states. A semiclassical description of the collective excitation damping in this method is based on modern physical notion on the relaxation processes in Fermi systems. The TPA model gives rather accurate means of simultaneous description of the gamma- decay and photoabsorption strength functions in the medium and heavy nuclei. It is able to cover a relatively wide energy interval, ranging from zeroth gamma-ray energy to values …
Metastable states with T$_{1/2}$ = 8(2) ms in $^{205}$Bi and T$_{1/2}$ = 0.22(2) ms in $^{204}$Pb, with $\approx $ 8 MeV excitation energy and angular momentum $\ge $ 22 $\hbar $, have been established. These represent, by up to two orders of magnitude, the longest-lived nuclear states above an excitation energy of 7 MeV, ever identified in the nuclear chart. Additionally, the half-life of the 10.17 MeV state in $^{206}$Bi has been determined to be 0.027(2) ms, the next highest value in this highly excited regime. These observations indicate the emergence of an island of extreme nuclear isomer…
The detailed analysis of wide excitation function of nuclear stopping has been studied within a transport model, Isospin-dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (IQMD) and an overall good agreement with the INDRA and FOPI experimental data has been achieved. It is found that mean value of isotropy in central Heavy-Ion Collision (HIC) reaches a minimum near Fermi energy and approaches a maximum around 300 - 400$A$ MeV. This suggests that, in statistical average, the equilibration is far from being reached even in central HIC especially near Fermi energy. A hierarchy in stopping of fragments,…

The experimental data are analyzed and compared to the earlier results and to the prediction of the EMPIRE-3 as well as the TALYS theoretical model code in the TENDL-2012 library. From the measured cross-section data integral production yields were calculated…
We describe evaluation methods that make use of experimental data, and nuclear model calculations, to develop an ENDF-formatted data library for the reaction p + Li7 for incident protons with energies up to 150 MeV. The important 7-Li(p,n_0) and 7-Li(p,n_1) reactions are evaluated from the experimental data, with their angular distributions represented using Lengendre polynomial expansions. The decay of the remaining reaction flux is estimated from GNASH nuclear model calculations. The evaluated ENDF-data are described in detail, and illustrated in numerous figures. We also illustrate the use …
In carbon-therapy, the interaction of the incoming beam with human tissues may lead to the production of a large amount of nuclear fragments and secondary light particles. An accurate estimation of the biological dose deposited into the tumor and the surrounding healthy tissues thus requires sophisticated simulation tools based on nuclear reaction models. The validity of such models requires intensive comparisons with as many sets of experimental data as possible. Up to now, a rather limited set of double di erential carbon fragmentation cross sections have been measured in the energy range us…
Energies, total and partial widths, and reduced width amplitudes of 8Be resonances up to an excitation energy of 26 MeV are extracted from a coupled channel analysis of experimental data. The presence of an extremely broad J^pi = 2^+ ``intruder'' resonance is confirmed, while a new 1^+ and very broad 4^+ resonance are discovered. A previously known 22 MeV 2^+ resonance is likely resolved into two resonances. The experimental J^pi T = 3^(+)? resonance at 22 MeV is determined to be 3^-0, and the experimental 1^-? (at 19 MeV) and 4^-? resonances to be isospin 0.
The electric dipole strength distribution in 120Sn between 5 and 22 MeV has been determined at RCNP Osaka from a polarization transfer analysis of proton inelastic scattering at E_0 = 295 MeV and forward angles including 0°. Combined with photoabsorption data an electric dipole polarizability α_D(120Sn) = 8.93(36) fm^3 is extracted. The dipole polarizability as isovector observable par excellence carries direct information on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The correlation of the new value with the well established α_D(208Pb) serves as a test of its prediction by nuclea…
Within a transport model, we study effects of the momentum dependence of nuclear symmetry potential on pion observables in central Sn + Sn collisions at 270 MeV/nucleon. To this end, a quantity $U_{sym}^{\infty}(ρ_{0})$, i.e., the value of nuclear symmetry potential at the saturation density $ρ_{0}$ and infinitely large nucleon momentum, is used to characterise the momentum dependence of nuclear symmetry potential. It is shown that with a certain $L$ (i.e., slope of nuclear symmetry energy at $ρ_{0}$) the characteristic parameter $U_{sym}^{\infty}(ρ_{0})$ of symmetry potential affects signific…
We extract the mass-dependent symmetry energy coefficients $a_{\text{sym}}({A})$ with the nuclear mass differences reducing the uncertainties as far as possible. The estimated $a_{\text{sym}}({A})$ of $^{208}\text{Pb}$ is $22.4\pm 0.3 $ MeV, which is further used to analyze the density-dependent nuclear matter symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. The slope parameter of the symmetry energy at the saturation density $ρ_{0}$ is $L=50.0\pm15.5$ MeV. Furthermore, it is found that, at the density of $ρ=0.69ρ_{0}=0.11$fm$^{-3}$, the symmetry energy $S(ρ=0.11\text{fm}^{-3})=25.98\pm0.01$ MeV an…

Cross-sections were measured with the activation method using a stacked foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The experimental data are analyzed and compared to the results of the theoretical model codes ALICE-IPPE, EMPIRE-II and TALYS. From the measured cross…
The existence of a supernumerary nuclear rainbow in inelastic scattering is reported. This is done by studying inelastic $^{16}$O scattering from $^{12}$C, exciting the $2^+$ (4.44 MeV) state of $^{12}$C and elastic scattering at the incident energies in the range 124 to 200 MeV, using the coupled channels method. An extended double folding potential is used. This is derived from realistic wave functions for $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O calculated with a microscopic $α$ cluster model and a finite-range density-dependent nucleon-nucleon force. Excitations to the $2^+$ (4.44 MeV), 3$^-$ (9.64 MeV) and …
Activation cross sections of proton induced nuclear reactions on palladium were measured up to 80 MeV by using the stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma ray spectrometry. The beam intensity, the incident energy and the energy degradation were controlled by a method based on flux constancy via normalization to the excitation functions of monitor reactions measured in parallel. Excitation functions for direct and cumulative cross-sections were measured for the production of ${}^{104m,104g,105}$${}^{g,106m,110m}$Ag, ${}^{100,101}$Pd, ${}^{99m,99g,100,}$${}^{101m}$${}^{,101g,102m,102g,105}$…
In recent years, investigations of angular distributions of fragments in neutron-induced nuclear fission have been extended to intermediate energies, up to 200 MeV, as well as to a wide range of target isotopes. Using as an example the latest data obtained by our group for the reaction 237-Np(n,f), we discuss the specific features of fission fragment angular distribution and present a method for their simulation based on the code TALYS. It is shown that a simplified model reasonably describes energy dependence of the angular distribution in the whole range 1-200 MeV. The ways to improve the mo…
Valuable theoretical predictions of nuclear dipole excitations in the whole chart are of great interest for different nuclear applications, including in particular nuclear astrophysics. Here we present large-scale calculations of the $E1$ $γ$-ray strength function obtained in the framework of the axially-symmetric deformed QRPA based on the finite-range Gogny force. This approach is applied to even-even nuclei, the strength function for odd nuclei being derived by interpolation. The convergence with respect to the adopted number of harmonic oscillator shells and the cut-off energy introduced i…
