The primordial curvature fluctuation spectrum is reconstructed by the maximum likelihood reconstruction method using the five-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy. We apply the covariance matrix analysis and decompose the reconstructed spectrum into statistically independent band-powers. The prominent peak off a simple power-law spectrum found in our previous analysis turn out to be a $3.3σ$ deviation. From the statistics of primordial spectra reconstructed from mock observations, the probability that a primordial spectrum including such excess is realized in a power-law model is estimated to be about 2%.
The primordial curvature fluctuation spectrum is reconstructed by the cosmic inversion method using the five-year WMAP data of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy. We apply the covariance matrix analysis and decompose the reconstructed spectrum into statistically independent band-powers. The statistically significant deviation from a simple power-law spectrum suggested by the analysis of the first-year data is not found in the five-year data except possibly at one point near the border of the wavenumber domain where accurate reconstruction is possible.
A method for the reconstruction of the primordial density fluctuation field is presented. Various previous approaches to this problem rendered {\it non-unique} solutions. Here, it is demonstrated that the initial positions of dark matter fluid elements, under the hypothesis that their displacement is the gradient of a convex potential, can be reconstructed uniquely. In our approach, the cosmological reconstruction problem is reformulated as an assignment problem in optimisation theory. When tested against numerical simulations, our scheme yields excellent reconstruction on scales larger than a…
Assuming linearity of the perturbations at the time of decoupling, we reconstruct the primordial scalar potential from the temperature and polarization anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation. In doing so we derive an optimal linear filter which, when operated on the spherical harmonic coefficients of the anisotropy maps, returns an estimate of the primordial scalar potential fluctuations in a spherical slice. The reconstruction is best in a thick shell around the decoupling epoch; the quality of the reconstruction depends on the redshift of the slice within this shell. With …
We reconstruct the shape of the primordial power spectrum (PPS) using a smoothing spline. Our adapted smoothing spline technique provides a complementary method to existing efforts to search for smooth features in the PPS, such as a running spectral index. With this technique we find no significant indication with WMAP first-year data that the PPS deviates from Harrison-Zeldovich and no evidence for loss of power on large scales. We also examine the effect on the cosmological parameters of the additional PPS freedom. Smooth variations in the PPS are not significantly degenerate with other cosm…
Precise measurements of the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background enable us to do an accurate study on the form of the primordial power spectrum for a given set of cosmological parameters. In a previous paper (Shafieloo and Souradeep 2004), we implemented an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from the first year of WMAP data to determine the primordial power spectrum assuming a concordance cosmological model. This recovered spectrum has a likelihood far better than a scale invariant, or, `best fit' scale free spec…
We discuss a possibility to directly reconstruct the CMB polarization field at the last scattering surface by accounting for modifications imposed by the gravitational lensing effect. The suggested method requires a tracer field of the large scale structure lensing potentials that deflected propagating CMB photons from the last scattering surface. This required information can come from a variety of observations on the large scale structure matter distribution, including convergence reconstructed from lensing shear studies involving galaxy shapes. In the case of so-called curl, or B,-modes of …
The latest cosmological data seem to indicate a significant deviation from scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum when parameterized either by a power law or by a spectral index with non-zero "running". This deviation, by itself, serves as a powerful tool to discriminate among theories for the origin of cosmological structures such as inflationary models. Here, we use a minimally-parametric smoothing spline technique to reconstruct the shape of the primordial power spectrum. This technique is well-suited to search for smooth features in the primordial power spectrum such as deviatio…
In order to reconstruct the initial conditions of the universe it is important to devise a method that can efficiently constrain the shape of the power spectrum of primordial matter density fluctuations in a model-independent way from data. In an earlier paper we proposed a method based on the wavelet expansion of the primordial power spectrum. The advantage of this method is that the orthogonality and multiresolution properties of wavelet basis functions enable information regarding the shape of $P_{\rm in}(k)$ to be encoded in a small number of non-zero coefficients. Any deviation from scale…
We examine the polarization signal of the cosmic microwave background radiation associated with distant clusters. The polarization is induced by the Thomson scattering of microwave photons with ionized gas of clusters and contains information of quadrupole temperature anisotropies observed at the clusters. The three-dimensional map of the signal are expressed in terms of the spin-weighted harmonics for its angular dependence. Its radial dependence is expanded perturbatively with respect to the distances (equivalently redshifts) to the clusters. The independent information that we can extract o…
We report the results of a recent likelihood analysis combining the primordial nucleosynthesis and the BOOMERanG and MAXIMA-1 data on cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies. We discuss the possible implications for relic neutrino background of a high value for the baryonic matter content of the universe, larger than what is expected in a standard nucleosynthesis scenario.
The form of the primordial power spectrum has the potential to differentiate strongly between competing models of perturbation generation in the early universe and so is of considerable importance. The recent release of five years of WMAP observations have confirmed the general picture of the primordial power spectrum as deviating slightly from scale invariance with a spectral tilt parameter of n_s ~ 0.96. Nonetheless, many attempts have been made to isolate further features such as breaks and cutoffs using a variety of methods, some employing more than ~ 10 varying parameters. In this paper w…
Reconstructing the shape of the primordial power spectrum in a model independent way from cosmological data is a useful consistency check on what is usually assumed regarding early universe physics. It is also our primary window to unknown physics during the inflationary era. Using a power-law form for the primordial power spectrum $P_{in}(k)$ and constraining the scalar spectral index and its running, \cite{Peiris03} found that the first year WMAP data seem to indicate a preferred scale in $P_{in}(k)$. We use two complementary methods: the wavelet band powers method of \cite{pia1}, and the to…
In this paper we implement an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from the WMAP 3 year data to determine the primordial power spectrum assuming different points in the cosmological parameter space for a flat LCDM cosmological model. We also present the preliminary results of the cosmological parameter estimation by assuming a free form of the primordial spectrum, for a reasonably large volume of the parameter space. The recovered spectrum for a considerably large number of the points in the cosmological parameter space has a…
The Monge-Ampere-Kantorovich (MAK) reconstruction is tested against cosmological N-body simulations. Using only the present mass distribution sampled with particles, and the assumption of homogeneity of the primordial distribution, MAK recovers for each particle the non-linear displacement field between its present position and its Lagrangian position on a primordial uniform grid. To test the method, we examine a standard LCDM N-body simulation with Gaussian initial conditions and 6 models with non-Gaussian initial conditions: a chi-squared model, a model with primordial voids and four weakly …
A new technique of Fourier analysis on a cut sky (Gorski, 1994) has been applied to the two year COBE DMR sky maps. The Bayesian power spectrum estimation results are consistent with the Harrison-Zel'dovich n=1 model. The maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters of the power spectrum of primordial perturbations are n=1.22 (1.02) and Q_{rms-PS}=17 (20) uK including (excluding) the quadrupole anisotropy. The marginal likelihood function on n renders n=1.10 \pm 0.32 (0.87 \pm 0.36).
We describe how a survey of the polarization of the cosmic microwave background induced by Compton scattering in galaxy clusters can be used to make a full spatial reconstruction of the primordial (z~1089) matter distribution inside our surface of last scattering. This "polarization tomography" can yield a spatial map of the initial state of the Universe just as gravitational collapse was beginning to drive structure formation. We present a transparent method and simple formulas from which one can compute the 3D primordial map in real and in Fourier space, given a 3D map of the polarization du…
We present a new method for reconstructing two-dimensional mass maps of galaxy clusters from the image distortion of background galaxies. In contrast to most previous approaches, which directly convert locally averaged image ellipticities to mass maps (direct methods), our entropy-regularized maximum-likelihood method is an inverse approach. Albeit somewhat more expensive computationally, our method allows high spatial resolution in those parts of the cluster where the lensing signal is strong enough. Furthermore, it allows to straightforwardly incorporate additional constraints, such as magni…
We extend to large scales a method proposed in previous work that reconstructs non-parametrically the primordial power spectrum from cosmic microwave background data at high resolution. The improvement is necessary to account for the non-gaussianity of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) likelihood due primarily to cosmic variance. We assume the concordance LambdaCDM cosmology, utilise a smoothing prior and perform Monte Carlo simulations around an initial power spectrum that is scale-free and with spectral index n_s=0.97, very close to the concordance spectrum. The horizon scale f…
In a previous paper we investigated means for constraining the mass distribution of cluster galaxies by weak lensing. We concluded that a comprehensive method should treat the lensing effects of individual cluster galaxies and those resulting from a general cluster component simultaneously. To this end we now develop a non-parametric maximum likelihood cluster reconstruction algorithm that can implicitly take into account the presence of cluster galaxies. The method includes an entropy-like regularization prescription and directly uses the ellipticities of individual source galaxy images as ob…
The observed angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy, $C_l$, is a convolution of a cosmological radiative transport kernel with an assumed primordial power spectrum of inhomogeneities. Exquisite measurements of $C_l$ over a wide range of multipoles from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) has opened up the possibility to deconvolve the primordial power spectrum for a given set of cosmological parameters (base model). We implement an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from…
Fourier analysis and power spectrum estimation of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy on an incompletely sampled sky developed by Gorski (1994) has been applied to the high-latitude portion of the 4-year COBE DMR 31.5, 53 and 90 GHz sky maps. Likelihood analysis using newly constructed Galaxy cuts (extended beyond |b| = 20deg to excise the known foreground emission) and simultaneously correcting for the faint high latitude galactic foreground emission is conducted on the DMR sky maps pixelized in both ecliptic and galactic coordinates. The Bayesian power spectrum estimation from the for…
We develop a new approach toward a high resolution non-parametric reconstruction of the primordial power spectrum using WMAP cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies that we confront with SDSS large-scale structure data in the range k~0.01-0.1 h/Mpc. We utilise the standard LambdaCDM cosmological model but we allow the baryon fraction to vary. In particular, for the concordance baryon fraction, we compare indications of a possible feature at k~0.05 h/Mpc in WMAP data with suggestions of similar features in large scale structure surveys.
The real-space power spectrum of L* galaxies measured from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) is presented. Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) sampling was used to fit radial and angular modes resulting from a Spherical Harmonics decomposition of the 2dFGRS overdensity field (described in Percival et al. 2004) with 16 real-space power spectrum values and linear redshift-space distortion parameter β(L*,0). The recovered marginalised band-powers are compared to previous estimates of galaxy power spectra. Additionally, we provide a simple model for the 17 dimensional likelihood hyper-surface in…
We review the basic arguments for the likelihood of non-Gaussian density perturbations in inflation models with primordial black hole (PBH) production. We discuss our derived distributions of field fluctuations and their implications, specifically commenting on the fine-tuning problem. We also discuss how the derived distributions may be affected when linked to metric perturbations. While linking the metric perturbations to field fluctuations in a nonlinear way may be important for determining exact probability distributions, the correct mapping is not self-evident. The calculation of P. Ivano…
