We show that at certain values of QCD condensates the nucleon QCD sum rules with "pole+continuum" model for the hadron spectrum obtain an unphysical solution. This provides constrains for the values of condensates to be consistent with existence of a physical solutions. The constrains become much weaker if the radiative corrections are included perturbatively. We demonstrate that the most important dependence of nucleon mass on the quark scalar condensate becomes much weaker under factorization assumption for the four-quark and six-quark condensates.
The longest-range part of the nuclear force due to the one-pion exchange governs the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude in the near-threshold region and imposes correlations between the coefficients in the effective range expansion. These correlations may be regarded as low-energy theorems and are known to hold to a high accuracy in the neutron-proton 3S1 partial wave. We generalize the low-energy theorems to the case of unphysical pion masses and provide results for the correlations between the coefficients in the effective range expansion in this partial wave for pion masses up to…
This presentation reports on recent developments concerning basic aspects of low-energy QCD as they relate to the understanding of the nucleon mass and the nuclear many-body problem.
We use the method of QCD sum rules in the presence of an external pion field to investigate isospin symmetry breakings in pion-nucleon couplings. Possible manifestations of such isospin symmetry breaking are examined in the context of low-energy nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) scattering. We discuss numerical results in relation to both the existing data and other theoretical predictions.
We calculate the nucleon parameters in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter using the QCD sum rules. The nucleon self-energies are expressed in terms of the in-medium values of QCD condensates. The simple approximate expressions for the self-energies are obtained in terms of these condensates. Relation between successive inclusion of the condensates and the meson-exchange picture of the nucleon interaction with medium is analyzed. The values of the self-energies and of the symmetry energy agree with those obtained by the methods of nuclear physics.
The external-field QCD Sum Rules method is used to evaluate the coupling constant of the light isoscalar-scalar meson (``$σ$'' or ε) to the nucleon. The contributions that come from the excited nucleon states and the response of the continuum threshold to the external field are calculated. The obtained value of the coupling constant is compatible with the large value required in one-boson exchange potential models of the two-nucleon interaction.
Relationships between mass intervals for free hadrons and in nuclei are studied in two theoretical approaches inspired by QCD: naive quark model and skyrmion model, taking one example each from mesons and baryons, that of pi-rho splitting in mesons, and nucleon-Delta splitting in baryons. Possible deconfinement effects in nuclei are examined.
We calculate the nucleon parameters in nuclear matter using the QCD sum rules method. The radiative corrections to the leading operator product expansion terms are included, with the corrections of the order α_s beyond the logarithmic approximation taken into account. The density dependence of the influence of radiative corrections on the nucleon parameters is obtained. At saturation density the radiative corrections increase the values of vector and scalar self-energies by about 40 MeV, and 30 MeV correspondingly. The results appear to be stable with respect to possible variations of the valu…
We show on two examples, namely a calculation for charge symmetry breaking in pn->d pi^0 that allows one to extract the quark mass difference induced part of the proton--neutron mass difference and a high precision calculation for pion--deuteron scattering and its implications for the value of the charged pion--nucleon coupling constant, how QCD tests can be performed from low energy hadronic observables.
We establish the interrelation between the QCD scalar response of the nuclear medium and its response to a scalar probe coupled to nucleons, such as the scalar meson responsible for the nuclear binding. The relation that we derive applies at the nucleonic as well as at the nuclear levels. Non trivial consequences follow. One concerns the scalar QCD susceptibility of the nucleon. The other opens the possibility of relating medium effects in the scalar meson exchange of nuclear physics to QCD lattice studies of the nucleon mass.
We calculate the single-particle nucleon characteristics in symmetric nuclear matter with inclusion of the 3N interactions. The contribution of the 3N forces to the nucleon self energies are expressed in terms of the nonlocal scalar condensate (d=3) and of the configuration of the two four-quark condensates (d=6) in which two diquark operators act on two different nucleons of the matter. The most important part of the contribution of the four-quark condensate is calculated in a model-independent way. We employed a relativistic quark model of nucleon for calculation of the rest part. The densit…
We calculate the nucleon parameters in nuclear matter using the QCD sum rules approach in Fermi gas approximation. Terms up to 1/q^2 in the operator product expansion (OPE) are taken into account. The higher moments of the nucleon structure functions are included. The complete set of the nucleon expectation values of the four-quark operators is employed. Earlier the lack of information on these values has been the main obstacle for the further development of the approach. We show that the four-quark condensates provide the corrections of the order 20% to the results obtained in the leading ord…
We consider the nucleon-nucleon potential in quenched and partially-quenched QCD. The leading one-meson exchange contribution to the potential is found to fall off exponentially at long-distances, in contrast with the Yukawa-type behaviour found in QCD. This unphysical component of the two-nucleon potential has important implications for the extraction of nuclear properties from lattice simulations.
We review the potential method in lattice QCD, which has recently been proposed to extract nucleon-nucleon interactions via numerical simulations. We focus on the methodology of this approach by emphasizing the strategy of the potential method, the theoretical foundation behind it, and special numerical techniques. We compare the potential method with the standard finite volume method in lattice QCD, in order to make pros and cons of the approach clear. We also present several numerical results for the nucleon-nucleon potentials.
I present an exact relationship between the electric dipole moment and anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon in the light-front formalism of QCD and consider its consequences.
We study the third order pion-nucleon scattering amplitude obtained from heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory inside the Mandelstam triangle. We reconstruct the pion-nucleon amplitude in the unphysical region by use of dispersion relations and determine the pertinent low-energy constants by a fit to this amplitude. A detailed comparison with values obtained from phase shift analysis is given. Our analysis leads to a pion-nucleon sigma-term of sigma(0) = 40 MeV based on the Karlsruhe partial wave analysis. We have repeated the same procedure using the latest solution of the VPI group and fin…
We present results of the first fully-dynamical lattice QCD determination of nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths in the 1S0 channel and 3S1-3D1 coupled channels. The calculations are performed with domain-wall valence quarks on the MILC staggered configurations with lattice spacing of b=0.125 fm in the isospin-symmetric limit, and in the absence of electromagnetic interactions.
We report on recent work about the study of quark mass dependence of nucleon magnetic moments and axial-vector coupling constant. We examine the feasibility of chiral effective field theory methods for the extrapolation of lattice QCD data obtained at relative large pion masses down to the physical values.
We show that the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the nuclear matrix model derives the statistical nature of nucleons in holographic QCD. For N_c= odd (even), the nucleon is shown to be a fermion (boson).
The nature of the nonrelativistic nucleon-nucleon potential in the large N_c limit is discussed. In particular, we address the consistency of the meson exchange picture of nucleon interactions. It is shown that the nonrelativistic nucleon-nucleon potential extracted from the Feynmann graphs up to and including two-meson exchange diagrams satisfies the spin-flavor counting rules of Kaplan and Savage, and Kaplan and Manohar, provided the nucleon momenta is of order N_{c}^{0}. The key to this is a cancelation of the retardation effect of the box graphs against the contributions of the crossed-box…
The in-medium behavior of the nucleon spectral density including self-energies is revisited within the framework of QCD sum rules. Special emphasis is given to the density dependence of four-quark condensates. A complete catalog of four-quark condensates is presented and relations among them are derived. Generic differences of such four-quark condensates occurring in QCD sum rules for light baryons and light vector mesons are discussed.
We study QCD at non-zero quark density, zero temperature, infinite coupling using the Glasgow algorithm. An improved complex zero analysis gives a critical point μ_c in agreement with that of chiral symmetry restoration computed with strong coupling expansions, and monomer-dimer simulations. We observe, however, two unphysical critical points: the onset for the number density μ_o, and μ_s the saturation threshold, coincident with pathological onsets observed in past quenched QCD calculations. An analysis of the probability distributions for particle number supports our physical interpretation …
The $J/ψ$-nucleon interaction is studied by lattice QCD calculations. At the leading order of the derivative expansion, the interaction consists of four terms: the central, the spin-spin, and two types of tensor forces. We determine these spin-dependent forces quantitatively by using the time-dependent HAL QCD method. We find that the spin-spin force is the main cause of the hyperfine splitting between the $J=1/2$ and the $J=3/2$ states, while the two tensor forces have much smaller effects on the S-wave scattering processes.
Nucleon-nucleon scattering observables are discussed in the context of large Nc QCD. As is well known, the baryon spectrum in the large Nc limit exhibits contracted SU(2Nf) spin-flavor sym- metry. This symmetry can be used to derive model-independent relations between proton-proton and proton-neutron total cross sections. These relations are valid in the kinematic regime in which the relative momentum of two nucleons is of order of Nc. In this semiclassical regime the nucleon-nucleon scattering can be described in the time-dependent mean field approximation. These model-independent results are…
We demonstrate that the extremely accurate lattice QCD data for the mass of the nucleon recently obtained by CP-PACS, combined with modern chiral extrapolation techniques, leads to a value for the mass of the physical nucleon which has a systematic error of less than one percent.
We calculate the electromagnetic and the axial form factors of the nucleon within the framework of light cone sum rules (LCSR) to leading order in QCD and including higher twist corrections. In particular we motivate a certain choice for the interpolating nucleon field. We find that a simple model of the nucleon distribution amplitudes which deviate from their asymptotic shape, but much less compared to the QCD sum rule estimates, allows one to describe the data remarkably well.
Recent advances in lattice field theory, in computer technology and in chiral perturbation theory have enabled lattice QCD to emerge as a powerful quantitative tool in understanding hadron structure. I describe recent progress in the computation of the nucleon form factors and moments of parton distribution functions, before proceeding to describe lattice studies of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, I show how lattice studies of GPDs contribute to building a three-dimensional picture of the proton. I conclude by describing the prospects for studying the structure of r…
The problem of the structure of nucleons and their interaction in the concept of nonperturbative QCD is discussed as an approach to studying the transformation of current quarks into constituent ones and the search for the mechanism of such a transformation, creating the bulk of the nucleon mass. Attention is drawn to the possibilities offered by studying central nucleon-nucleon collisions in this aspect.
The charmonium-nucleon interaction is studied by the time-dependent HAL QCD method. We use a larger lattice volume and the relativistic heavy quark action for charm quark to obtain less systematic errors than those in our previous study. As a result, the sizable J/$ψ$N hyperfine splitting is observed, indicating that the spin-spin interaction is important to understand this system quantitatively. No J/$ψ$N or $η_c$N bound state is observed below the thresholds as in the previous results.
The Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function for two nucleons on the lattice has been shown to yield a non-local and energy-independent nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential, U(r,r'). In practice, the derivative expansion of U(r,r') is currently employed to determine the potential at low energies. In this report, we study the magnitude of non-locality to check the convergence of such a derivative expansion. With quenched lattice QCD at m_π= 530MeV, we compare the NN potentials at the center of mass energy E ~ 0 MeV and at E ~ 45 MeV. We also investigate the angular momentum dependence of the spin sin…
We calculate the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon within the light-cone sum rule approach. In comparison to previous work (hep-ph/0112085) we suggest to use a pure isospin-1/2 interpolating field for the nucleon, since the Chernyak-Zhitnitsky current leads to numerically large, unphysical, isospin violating contributions. The leading-order sum rules are derived for the form factors and the results are confronted with the experimental data. Our approach tends to favor the nucleon distribution amplitudes that are not far from the asymptotic shape.
Finite energy QCD sum rules involving nucleon current correlators are used to determine several QCD and hadronic parameters in the presence of an external, uniform, large magnetic field. The continuum hadronic threshold $s_0$, nucleon mass $m_N$, current-nucleon coupling $λ_N$, transverse velocity $v_\perp$, the spin polarization condensate $\langle\bar qσ_{12} q\rangle$, and the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate $χ_q$, are obtained for the case of protons and neutrons. Due to the magnetic field, and charge asymmetry of light quarks up and down, all the obtained quantities evolve…
We present our recent study on baryon-baryon ($BB$) interactions from lattice QCD with almost physical quark masses corresponding to $(m_π,m_K)\approx(146,525)$ MeV and large volume $(La)^4=(96a)^4\approx$ (8.1 fm)$^4$. In order to perform a comprehensive study of $BB$ interactions based on lattice QCD calculation with almost physical masses and to make better use of such large scale computer resources, a large number of $BB$ interactions from $NN$ to $ΞΞ$ are calculated simultaneously. In this report, we focus on the strangeness $S=-1$ channels of the hyperon interactions by means of HAL QCD …
By the quenched lattice QCD simulation for two nucleons with finite scattering energy, validity of the delivative expansion of the general nucleon-nucleon potential U(r,r') = V(r, {\nabla}_r) δ^3(r-r') is studied. The relative kinetic energy between two nucleons is introduced through the anti-periodic boundary condition in the spatial directions. On a hypercubic lattice with the lattice spacing a ~ 0.137 fm and the spatial extent L_s ~ 4.4 fm with the pion mass m_π ~ 530 MeV, the local potentials for two different energies (E ~ 0 MeV and 45 MeV) are compared and found to be identical within st…
Hyperon-nucleon interactions serve as basic inputs to studies of hypernuclear physics and dense (neutron) stars. Unfortunately, a precise understanding of these important quantities have lagged far behind that of the nucleon-nucleon interaction due to lack of high precision experimental data. Historically, hyperon-nucleon interactions are either formulated in quark models or meson exchange models. In recent years, lattice QCD simulations and chiral effective field theory approaches start to offer new insights from first principles. In the present work, we contrast the state of art lattice QCD …
The decomposition of the nucleon spin into that of quarks and gluons is related to twist-two GPDs according to Ji sum rule. Further decomposition into the helicity and the orbital angular momentum inevitably requires twist-three GPDs. In this paper we derive exact relations between twist-three GPDs and the canonical orbital angular momentum density of quarks and gluons, and check their consistency with the spin sum rule. Our work demonstrates that the complete decomposition of the nucleon spin fits well with the framework of perturbative QCD.
Including the meson-baryon (5 quark) intermediate states in a lattice simulation is challenging. However, it is important in order to obtain the correct energy eigenstates and to relate them to scattering phase shifts. Recent results for the negative parity nucleon channel and the problem of baryonic resonances in lattice calculations are discussed.
We review and examine in detail recent developments regarding the question of the nucleon mass decomposition. We discuss in particular the virial theorem in quantum field theory and its implications for the nucleon mass decomposition and mechanical equilibrium. We reconsider the renormalization of the QCD energy-momentum tensor in minimal-subtraction-type schemes and the physical interpretation of its components, as well as the role played by the trace anomaly and Poincaré symmetry. We also study the concept of "quantum anomalous energy" proposed in some works as a new contribution to the nucl…
We study isospin breaking instanton corrections to the operator product expansion of the nucleon correlation functions. After a comparison with quark model calculations based on the 't Hooft interaction, we examine the role of instantons in the corresponding QCD sum rules. Instanton contributions are found to be absent in the chirally even sum rule, but significant in the chirally-odd one. They improve the consistency of both sum rules and favor a value of the isovector quark condensate close to the chiral estimate.
In this paper we show that for a nucleon at rest if the quarks and/or antiquarks are in motion inside the nucleon producing chromo-magnetic field then the mass sum rule in QCD is violated when the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ rises linearly with $r$ (or faster). Hence we find that the mass of the nucleon at rest is not equal to the mass-energy of all the quarks plus antiquarks plus gluons inside the nucleon if there exists chromo-magnetic field inside the nucleon and the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ rises linearly with $r$ (or faster).
The QCD sum rules for spin-dependent nucleon-nucleon interactions are formulated and their physical implications are studied. The basic object of the study is the correlation function of the nucleon interpolating field, where the matrix element is taken with respect to the one-nucleon state. The dispersion integral of the correlation function around the nucleon threshold is investigated in detail. It turns out that the integral can be identified as a measure of the nucleon-nucleon interaction strength, which is proportional to the scattering length in the small scattering length limit and to o…
We discuss the status of current dynamical lattice QCD simulations in connection to the emerging results on the strange and charmed baryon spectrum, excited states of the nucleon and the investigation of the structure of scalar mesons.
The scalar-isoscalar mode of QCD becomes lighter/nearly massless close to the chiral transition/second-order critical point. From nuclear physics we know that this mode is the main responsible for the attractive part of the nucleon-nucleon potential at inter-particle distances of 1-2 fm. Therefore one expects that close to the critical point there is a long-range strong attraction among nucleons. Using a Walecka-Serot model for the NN potential we study the effects of the critical point in a finite system of nucleons and mesons by solving classical Molecular Dynamics+Langevin equations for the…
We derive QCD sum rules from the nucleon two-point function in nuclear medium, calculating its specral function in chiral perturbation theory to one loop. Our calculation shows the inadequacy of the commonly used ansatz to represent the two-point function as the sum of a nucleon pole term and a spectral integral over the high energy continuum. We also point out that it is the energy variable and not its square that must be used in writing the dispersion integrals. The sum rules are obtained by equating terms linear in nucleon number density of the spectral and operator representations of the c…
The internal structure of the nucleon is discussed within the context of QCD. Recent progress in understanding the distribution of flavor and spin in the nucleon is reviewed, and prospects for extending our knowledge of nucleon structure in electron scattering experiments at modern facilities such as Jefferson Lab are outlined.
~Based on the gauge invariant quark canonical momentum we construct two theoretically possible decompositions of nucleon momentum to those of quarks and gluons. We predict that either 6% or 21% of nucleon momentum is carried by gluons, depending on what type of gluons are in nucleons. We clarify the existing confusions on this problem and discuss the physical implications of our result on the proton spin crisis problem.
We calculate the low energy constants of four-nucleon interactions in an effective chiral Lagrangian in holographic QCD. We start with a D4-D8 model to obtain meson-nucleon interactions and then integrate out massive mesons to obtain the four-nucleon interactions in 4D. We end up with two low energy constants at the leading order and seven of them at the next leading order, which is consistent with the effective chiral Lagrangian. The values of the low energy constants are evaluated with the first five Kaluza-Klein resonances.
Two new QCD sum rules for nucleon tensor charge are derived from a mixed correlator of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 nucleon interpolating fields. These sum rules are analyzed along with a sum rule obtained from the usual correlator of a general spin-1/2 nucleon interpolating field. The validity and reliability of the sum rules are examined by monitoring the contaminations arising from the transitions and continuum and the convergence of the operator product expansion. Valid sum rules are identified and their predictions are presented. It is found that the vacuum tensor susceptibility induced by the e…
On the basis of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method with the nucleon-nucleon forces obtained from lattice QCD simulations, the properties of the medium-heavy doubly-magic nuclei such as 16^O and 40^Ca are investigated. We found that those nuclei are bound for the pseudo-scalar meson mass M_PS ~ 470 MeV. The mass number dependence of the binding energies, single-particle spectra and density distributions are qualitatively consistent with those expected from empirical data at the physical point, although these hypothetical nuclei at heavy quark mass have smaller binding energies than the real nucl…
Nucleon matters are studied based on QCD. We extract nucleon-nucleon interaction from lattice QCD simulations in a recently developed approach, and then derive the equations of state of the symmetric nuclear matter and the pure neutron matter, at zero temperature, in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock framework. We find that QCD reproduce known features of the symmetric nuclear matter, such as the self-binding and saturation, at some values of quark mass. We find also that the pure neutron matter become more stiff at large density as quark mass decrease. We apply these equations of state to neutron st…
A covariant quark model, based both on the spectator formalism and on vector meson dominance, and previously calibrated by the physical data, is here extended to the unphysical region of the lattice data by means of one single extra adjustable parameter - the constituent quark mass in the chiral limit. We calculated the Nucleon (N) and the gamma N -> Delta form factors in the universe of values for that parameter described by quenched lattice QCD. A qualitative description of the Nucleon and gamma N -> Delta form factors lattice data is achieved for light pions.
We present recent developments in lattice QCD simulations as applied in the study of hadron structure. We discuss the challenges and perspectives in the evaluation of benchmark quantities such as the nucleon axial charge and the isovector parton momentum fraction, as well as, in the computation of the nucleon $σ$-terms, which involve the calculation of disconnected quark loop contributions.
We use contracted spin-flavor symmetry which emerges in the large Nc limit of QCD to obtain relations between proton-proton and proton-neutron total cross sections for both polarized and unpolarized scattering. The formalism used is valid in the semi-classical regime in which the relative momentum of the incident nucleons is much larger than the inverse size of the nucleon, provided that certain technical assumptions are met. The relations should be phenomenologically useful provided that Nc=3 is sufficiently large so that the large Nc results have at least semi-quantitative predictive power. …
