We report the detection of a candidate brown dwarf orbiting the metal-rich K dwarf HD 91669, based on radial-velocity data from the McDonald Observatory Planet Search. HD 91669b is a substellar object in an eccentric orbit (e=0.45) at a separation of 1.2 AU. The minimum mass of 30.6 Jupiter masses places this object firmly within the brown dwarf desert for inclinations i>23 degrees. This is the second rare close-in brown dwarf candidate discovered by the McDonald planet search program.
Based on the long-term radial-velocity surveys carried out with the McDonald Observatory 2.7m Harlan J. Smith Telescope from 1988 to the present, we derive upper limits to long-period giant planet companions for 31 nearby stars. Data from three phases of the McDonald Observatory 2.7m planet-search program have been merged together and for 17 objects, data from the pioneering Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) radial-velocity program have also been included in the companion-limits determination. For those 17 objects, the baseline of observations is in excess of 23 years, enabling the detecti…
We report on low-spectral resolution observations of comet 9P/Tempel 1 from 1983, 1989, 1994 and 2005 using the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope of McDonald Observatory. This comet was the target of NASA's Deep Impact mission and our observations allowed us to characterize the comet prior to the impact. We found that the comet showed a decrease in gas production from 1983 to 2005, with the the decrease being different factors for different species. OH decreased by a factor 2.7, NH by 1.7, CN by 1.6, C$_{3}$ by 1.8, CH by 1.4 and C$_{2}$ by 1.3. Despite the decrease in overall gas production and …
We present an analysis of astrometric data from FGS 3, a white-light interferometer on {\it HST}, and of radial velocity data from two ground-based campaigns. We model the astrometric and radial velocity measurements simultaneously to obtain parallax, proper motion and component masses for Wolf 1062 = Gl 748 AB (M3.5V). To derive the mass fraction, we relate FGS 3 fringe scanning observations of the science target to a reference frame provided by fringe tracking observations of a surrounding star field. We obtain an absolute parallax $π_{abs} = 98.0 \pm 0.4$ milliseconds of arc, yielding ${\ca…
We present imaging and spectroscopic data on comet 19P/Borrelly that were obtained around the time of the Deep Space 1 encounter and in subsequent months. In the four months after perihelion, the comet showed a strong primary (sunward) jet that is aligned with the nucleus' spin axis. A weaker secondary jet on the opposite hemisphere appeared to became active around the end of 2001, when the primary jet was shutting down. We investigated the gas and dust distributions in the coma, which exhibited strong asymmetries in the sunward/anti-sunward direction. A comparison of the CN and C2 distributio…
I have developed a procedure utilizing a Genetic-Algorithm-based optimization scheme to fit the observed light curves of an eclipsing binary star with a model produced by the Wilson-Devinney code. The principal advantages of this approach are the global search capability and the objectivity of the final result. Although this method can be more efficient than some other comparably global search techniques, the computational requirements of the code are still considerable. I have applied this fitting procedure to my observations of the W UMa type eclipsing binary BH Cassiopeiae. An analysis of V…
We present the first spectroscopic metallicities of three M dwarfs with known or candidate planetary mass companions. We have analyzed high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of these stars which we obtained at McDonald Observatory. Our analysis technique is based on spectral synthesis of atomic and molecular features using recently revised cool-star model atmospheres and spectrum synthesis code. The technique has been shown to yield results consistent with the analyses of solar-type stars and allows measurements of M dwarf [M/H] values to 0.12 dex precision. From our analysis, we find […
Since the beginning of precise Doppler surveys, which have had stunning success in detecting extrasolar planetary companions, one surprising enigma has emerged: the relative paucity of spectroscopic binaries where the secondary mass lies in between the stellar and planetary mass regime. This gap in the mass function for close-in (a < 3 - 4 AU) companions to solar-type stars is generally referred to as the ``Brown Dwarf Desert''. Here we report the detection of a companion to HD 137510 (G0IV), with a minimum mass of 26 M_Jupiter, moving in an eccentric orbit (e=0.4) with a period of 798 days an…
The infrared search for substellar companions to nearby white dwarfs has been going for a little more than a decade. The most recent phase has been a wide field proper motion search carried out primarily at Steward Observatory, where we are complete down to J=18. Earlier phases included near field searches at the IRTF and Keck Observatory. In the last year we have discovered ten previously unrecognized faint proper motion companions. Of the recent discoveries, most are white dwarfs and a few M dwarfs. GD165B, discovered in 1988 as part of our program, is still the only known companion to a whi…
The Aladin sky atlas of the Virtual Observatory has shown to be a powerful and easy-handling tool for the discovery, confirmation, and characterisation of high proper-motion, multiple stellar systems of large separation in the solar vicinity. Some of these systems have very low mass components (at the star/brown dwarf boundary) and are amongst the least bound systems found to date. With projected physical separations of up to tens of thousands astronomical units, these systems represent a challenge for theoretical scenarios of formation of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Here we show pre…
The possible existence of additional long-period planetary-mass objects in the extrasolar planetary systems 47 UMa and 14 Her is investigated. We combine all available radial-velocity data on these stars, spanning up to 18 years. For the 47 UMa system, we show that while a second planet improves the fit to all available data, there is still substantial ambiguity as to the orbital parameters of the proposed planetary companion 47 UMa c. We also present new observations which clearly support a long-period companion in the 14 Her system. With a period of 6906+/-70 days, 14 Her c may be in a 4:1 r…
Three brown dwarfs in different evolutionary stages have been observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Combining the new observations with previous studies presented in the literature yields a brown dwarf sample that reaches well down into the cooling phase of brown dwarfs, allowing to investigate the possible influence of effective temperature on X-ray activity. Combining our results with published data allows us to consider a subsample of high-mass brown dwarfs (with 0.05-0.07 Msun), and another one characterized by similar effective temperature (with 2400-2800 K). Our findings support t…
We present here the detection of a brown dwarf orbiting the A9V star HD180777. The radial velocity measurements, obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph at the Haute-Provence Observatory, show a main variation with a period of 28.4 days. Assuming a primary mass of 1.7 Mo, the best Keplerian fit to the data leads to a minimum mass of 25 MJup for the companion (the true mass could be significantly higher). We also show that, after substraction of the Keplerian solution from the radial velocity measurements, the residual radial velocities are related to phenomena intrinsic to the star, name…
We present here the detection of a planet orbiting around the F6V star HD 33564. The radial velocity measurements, obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph at the Haute-Provence Observatory, show a variation with a period of 388 days. Assuming a primary mass of 1.25 Mo, the best Keplerian fit to the data leads to a minimum mass of 9.1 MJup for the companion.
We present deep observations of the nearby T-type brown dwarf binary $ε$ Indi Bab in radio with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and in X-rays with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Despite long integration times, the binary (composed of T1 and T6 dwarfs) was not detected in either wavelength regime. We reached $3σ$ upper limits of $1.23 \times 10^{12}$ and $1.74 \times 10^{12}$ erg/s/Hz for the radio luminosity at 4.8 GHz and 8.64 GHz, respectively; in the X-rays, the upper limit in the $0.1-10$ keV band was $3.16 \times 10^{23}$ erg/s. We discuss the above results in the framework of magne…
New observations of 9 of the brightest northern O stars have been made with the Breger polarimeter on the 0.9~m telescope at McDonald Observatory and the AnyPol polarimeter on the 0.4~m telescope at Limber Observatory, using the Johnson-Cousins UBVRI broadband filter system. Comparison with earlier measurements shows no clearly defined long-term polarization variability. For all 9 stars the wavelength dependence of the degree of polarization in the optical range can be fit by a normal interstellar polarization law. The polarization position angles are practically constant with wavelength and a…
We report on a multi-band survey for very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the Lupus 3 cloud with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) at the ESO/MPG 2.2m telescope on La Silla Observatory (Chile). Our multiband optical photometry is combined with available 2MASS JHK photometry to identify 19 new young stars and 3 brown dwarf candidates as probable members of this star forming region. Our objects are mostly clustered around the cloud core. Stars and brown dwarfs have similar levels of H-alpha emission, probably a signature of accretion. One object, a brown dwarf candidate, exhibits a near-infrared ex…
We present results of an X-ray search from bona-fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Rho Ophiuchi cloud cores with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The selected areas are two fields near the cloud center and are observed with the ACIS-I array of a 17'x17' size and a ~100 ks exposure. Among 18 bona-fide and candidate brown dwarfs listed by the infrared spectroscopy, we find X-ray emission from 7 sources above 99.9% confidence level. Therefore ~40% of the infrared-selected brown dwarfs in this cloud emit X-rays. For the brightest 4 sources, the X-ray spectra are made and are fitted with a thin-t…
The eclipsing brown-dwarf binary system 2MASS J05352184-0546085 is a case sui generis. For the first time, it allows a detailed analysis of the individual properties of young brown dwarfs, in particular, masses, and radii, and the temperature ratio of the system components can be determined accurately. The system shows a "temperature reversal" with the more massive component being the cooler one, and both components are found to be active. We analyze X-ray images obtained by Chandra and XMM-Newton containing 2MASS J05352184-0546085 in their respective field of view. The Chandra observatory dat…
In preparation for GLAST, we have compiled a sample of blazar candidates to increase the pool of well studied AGN from which GLAST counterparts will be drawn. Sources were selected with our Figure of Merit (FoM) ranking; thus, they have radio and X-ray properties very similar to the EGRET blazars. Spectroscopic confirmation of these candidates is in progress, and more than 70% of these objects have been identified as flat spectrum radio quasars and BL Lac objects. We present ~250 new optical blazar identifications based on McDonald Observatory spectroscopy, 224 with redshifts. Of these, 167 ar…
We present imaging and spectroscopic observations with HST (WFPC2, ACS/HRC and STIS), VLT (FORS2) and Keck (HIRES) of the dM8 ultra-cool dwarf DENIS-P J185950.9-370632, located in the R-CrA region. The presence of lithium absorption at 670.8 nm and the strong Halpha emission indicate a young age and a sub-stellar mass. Our diffraction-limited images resolve a companion at the separation limit of HST/ACS (~0.06"). The 2.1 mJy flux in the LW2 filter (5.0-8.5 microns) of the Infrared Space Observatory (see 1999A&A...350..883) likely corresponds to an infrared excess, suggesting the presence of ci…
The main goal of this paper is to prove that accreting very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs can be identified in IPHAS, a Halpha emission survey of the northern Milky Way.Full exploitation of the IPHAS database and a future extension of it in the southern hemisphere will be useful to identify very low-mass accreting objects near and far well-known star forming regions. We have used Virtual Observatory tools to cross-match the IPHAS catalogue with the 2MASS catalogue. We defined photometric criteria to identify Halpha emission sources with near-infrared colours similar to known young very low-m…
We report the discovery of a population of young brown dwarf candidates in the open star cluster IC348 and the development of a new spectroscopic classification technique using narrow band photometry. Observations were made using FLITECAM, the First Light Camera for SOFIA, at the 3-m Shane Telescope at Lick Observatory. FLITECAM is a new 1-5 micron camera with an 8 arcmin field of view. Custom narrow band filters were developed to detect absorption features of water vapor (at 1.495 microns) and methane (at 1.66 microns) characteristic of brown dwarfs. These filters enable spectral classificati…
We have used both the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrograph and the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck telescopes to obtain spectra of twelve candidate members of the Hyades cluster identified by Leggett and Hawkins (1988, 1989). All of the objects are chromospherically-active, late-type M-dwarfs, with H$α$ equivalent widths varying from 1 to 30Å. Based on our measured radial velocities, the level of stellar activity and other spectroscopic features, only one of the twelve stars has properties consistent with cluster membership. We consider how this result affects estimates of the luminosity…
We present an RI photometric survey covering an area of 430 arcmin^2 around the multiple star Sigma Orionis. The observations were conducted with the 0.8 m IAC-80 Telescope at the Teide Observatory. The survey limiting R and I magnitudes are 22.5 and 21, and completeness magnitudes 21 and 20, respectively. We have selected 53 candidates from the I vs. R-I colour-magnitude diagram (I=14-20) that follow the previously known photometric sequence of the cluster. Adopting an age of 2-4 Myr for the cluster, we find that these objects span a mass range from 0.35 Msol to 0.015 Msol. We have performed …
We discuss our high precision radial velocity results of a sample of 90 M dwarfs observed with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope and the Harlan J. Smith 2.7 m Telescope at McDonald Observatory, as well as the ESO VLT and the Keck I telescopes, within the context of the overall frequency of Jupiter-mass planetary companions to main sequence stars. None of the stars in our sample show variability indicative of a giant planet in a short period orbit, with a < 1 AU. We estimate an upper limit of the frequency f of close-in Jovian planets around M dwarfs as < 1.27% (at the 1 sigma confidence level). Furth…
We report the initial results of the Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey Gravity Project, to study gravity sensitive features as indicators of youth in brown dwarfs. Low-resolution (R~2000) J-band and optical (R~1000) observations using NIRSPEC and LRIS at the W.M. Keck Observatory reveal transitions of TiO, VO, K I, Na I, Cs I, Rb I, CaH, and FeH. By comparing these features in late-type giants and in old field dwarfs we show that they are sensitive to the gravity (g = GM/R^2) of the object. Using low-gravity spectral signatures as age indicators, we observed and analyzed J-band and optical spec…
Aims: We look for new regions for the search of substellar objects. Methods: Two circular areas, 45 arcmin-radius each, centred on the young massive star systems Alnilam and Mintaka in the Orion Belt, have been explored. The regions are very young (less than 10 Ma), have low extinction, and are neighbours to sigma Orionis (~3 Ma), a young open cluster very rich in brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects. We have used Virtual Observatory tools, the astro-photometric Tycho-2, DENIS and 2MASS catalogues, 10 control fields at similar galactic latitudes, and X-ray, mid-infrared and spectroscopic da…
Using the Hubble Space Telescope, the 4 m Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have performed deep imaging from 0.8 to 8 um of the southern subcluster in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. In these data, we have discovered an object, Cha 110913-773444, whose colors and magnitudes are indicative of a very low-mass brown dwarf with a circumstellar disk. In a near-infrared spectrum of this source obtained with the Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph, the presence of strong steam absorption confirms its late-type nature (>=M9.5) whil…
We present observations of Halpha emission line profiles taken at Magellan Observatory for a sample of 39 young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the Taurus and Chamaeleon I star forming regions. We have identified 11 new substellar accretors, more than tripling the number of known brown dwarfs with measurable accretion activity. These include the lowest-mass objects yet seen with accretion, with masses down to ~0.015 Msun. Using models of Halpha emission produced in magnetospheric accretion flows, the most widely applicable primary calibrator now available, we determine the first estimates o…
We present first results of our planet search program using the 9.2 meter Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) at McDonald Observatory to detect planets around M-type dwarf stars via high-precision radial velocity (RV) measurements. Although more than 100 extrasolar planets have been found around solar-type stars of spectral type F to K, there is only a single M-dwarf (GJ 876, Delfosse et al. 1998; Marcy et al. 1998; Marcy et al. 2001) known to harbor a planetary system. With the current incompleteness of Doppler surveys with respect to M-dwarfs, it is not yet possible to decide whether this is due to…
