We define a new monoidal category on collections (shuffle composition). Monoids in this category (shuffle operads) turn out to bring a new insight in the theory of symmetric operads. For this category, we develop the machinery of Gröbner bases for operads, and present operadic versions of Bergman's Diamond Lemma and Buchberger's algorithm. This machinery can be applied to study symmetric operads. In particular, we obtain an effective algorithmic version of Hoffbeck's PBW criterion of Koszulness for (symmetric) quadratic operads.
Using methods of computer algebra, especially Gröbner bases for submodules of free modules over polynomial rings, we solve a classification problem in theory of algebraic operads: we show that the only nontrivial (possibly inhomogeneous) distributive law between the operad of Lie algebras and the operad of commutative associative algebras is given by the Livernet-Loday formula deforming the Poisson operad into the associative operad.
We prove, under mild assumptions, that a Quillen equivalence between symmetric monoidal model categories gives rise to a Quillen equivalence between their model categories of (non-symmetric) operads, and also between model categories of algebras over operads. We also show left properness results on model categories of operads and algebras over operads. As an application, we prove homotopy invariance for (unital) associative operads.
In this work we provide a definition of a coloured operad as a monoid in some monoidal category, and develop the machinery of Gröbner bases for coloured operads. Among the examples for which we show the existance of a quadratic Gröbner basis we consider the seminal Lie-Rinehart operad whose algebras include pairs (functions, vector fields).
In this paper, we prove that there is a canonical homotopy $(n+1)$-algebra structure on the shifted operadic deformation complex $Def(e_n\to\mathcal{P})[-n]$ for any operad $\mathcal{P}$ and a map of operads $f\colon e_n\to\mathcal{P}$. This result generalizes the result of [T2], where the case $\mathcal{P}=\mathrm{End}_{Op}(X)$ was considered. Another more computational proof of the same statement was recently sketched in [CW]. Our method combines the one of [T2] with the categorical algebra on the category of symmetric sequences, introduced in [R] and further developed in [KM] and [Fr1]. We …
We present an implementation of the algorithm for computing Groebner bases for operads due to the first author and A. Khoroshkin. We discuss the actual algorithms, the choices made for the implementation platform and the data representation, and strengths and weaknesses of our approach.
We define a new $E_{\infty}$ operad based on surfaces with foliations which contains $E_k$ sub-operads. We construct CW models for these operads and provide applications of these models by giving actions on Hochschild complexes -thus making contact with string topology-, by giving explicit cell representatives for the Dyer-Lashof-Cohen operations for the 2-cubes and by constructing new $Ω$ spectra. The underlying novel principle is that we can trade genus in the surface representation vs. the dimension $k$ of the little $k$-cubes.
In our recent papers [Sh1,2], we introduced a {\it twisted tensor product} of dg categories, and provided, in terms of it, {\it a contractible 2-operad $\mathcal{O}$}, acting on the category of small dg categories, in which the "natural transformations" are derived. We made use of some homotopy theory developed in [To] to prove the contractibility of the 2-operad $\mathcal{O}$. The contractibility is an important issue, in vein of the theory of Batanin [Ba1,2], according to which an action of a contractible $n$-operad on $C$ makes $C$ a weak $n$-category. In this short note, we provide a new e…
We consider colored operads and their actions on categories. As a special example we construct a cobordism category with a colored operad action arising from oriented planar arc diagrams. This is used to construct an invariant of oriented tangle diagrams with values in the homotopy category attached to the cobordism category. Motivated by Bar-Natan's categorification of the Jones polynomial, it categorifies the quantum $sl_n$ quantum invariants and is adapted to the categorification of the $sl_n$ quantum invariants by Khovanov and Rozansky using matrix factorizations. We conjecture to exist th…
Jean-Louis Loday introduced a class of symmetric operads generated by one bilinear operation subject to one relation making each left-normed product of three elements equal to a linear combination of right-normed products: \[ (a_1a_2)a_3=\sum_{σ\in S_3}x_σ\, a_{σ(1)}(a_{σ(2)}a_{σ(3)})\ ; \] such an operad is called a parametrized one-relation operad. For a particular choice of parameters $\{x_σ\}$, this operad is said to be regular if each of its components is the regular representation of the symmetric group; equivalently, the corresponding free algebra on a vector space $V$ is, as a graded v…
We give a definition of weak n-categories based on the theory of operads. We work with operads having an arbitrary set S of types, or `S-operads', and given such an operad O, we denote its set of operations by elt(O). Then for any S-operad O there is an elt(O)-operad O+ whose algebras are S-operads over O. Letting I be the initial operad with a one-element set of types, and defining I(0) = I, I(i+1) = I(i)+, we call the operations of I(n-1) the `n-dimensional opetopes'. Opetopes form a category, and presheaves on this category are called `opetopic sets'. A weak n-category is defined as an opet…
We present a definition of homotopy algebra for an operad, and explore its consequences. The paper should be accessible to topologists, category theorists, and anyone acquainted with operads. After a review of operads and monoidal categories, the definition of homotopy algebra is given. Specifically, suppose that M is a monoidal category in which it makes sense to talk about algebras for some operad P. Then our definition says what a homotopy P-algebra in M is, provided only that some of the morphisms in M have been marked out as `homotopy equivalences'. The bulk of the paper consists of examp…
We develop a canonical pairing between trees and graphs, which passes to their quotients by Jacobi identities. This pairing is an effective and simple tool for understanding the Lie and Poisson operads, providing canonical duals. In the course of showing that this pairing is perfect we reprove some standard facts about the modules Lie(n), establishing standard bases as well as giving a new means to reduce to those bases. We then move on to define duals to free Lie algebras and to develop product, coproduct and operad structures. We give a brief account here to be built on in a number of differ…
For associative algebras in many different categories, it is possible to develop the machinery of Gröbner bases. A Gröbner basis of defining relations for an algebra of such a category provides a "monomial replacement" of this algebra. The main goal of this article is to demonstrate how this machinery can be used for the purposes of homological algebra. More precisely, our approach goes in three steps. First, we define a combinatorial resolution for the monomial replacement of an object. Second, we extract from those resolutions explicit representatives for homological classes. Finally, we exp…
We define a notion of category enriched over an oplax monoidal category $V$, extending the usual definition of category enriched over a monoidal category. Even though oplax monoidal structures involve infinitely many functors $V^n\to V$, defining categories enriched over $V$ only requires the lower arity maps $(n \leq 3)$, similarly to the monoidal case. The focal point of the enrichment theory shifts, in the oplax case, from the notion of $V$-category (given by collections of objects and hom-objects together with composition and unit maps) to the one of categories enriched over $V$ (genuine c…
Many years ago, Rota proposed a program on determining algebraic identities that can be satisfied by linear operators. After an extended period of dormant, progress on this program picked up speed in recent years, thanks to perspectives from operated algebras and Gröbner-Shirshov bases. These advances were achieved in a series of papers from special cases to more general situations. These perspectives also indicate that Rota's insight can be manifested very broadly, for other algebraic structures such as Lie algebras, and further in the context of operads. This paper gives a survey on the moti…
