If the accelerated expansion of the Universe at the present epoch is driven by a dark energy scalar field, there may well be a non-trivial coupling between the dark energy and the cold dark matter (CDM) fluid. Such interactions give rise to new features in cosmological structure growth, like an additional long-range attractive force between CDM particles, or variations of the dark matter particle mass with time. We have implemented these effects in the N-body code GADGET-2 and present results of a series of high-resolution N-body simulations where the dark energy component is directly interacting with the cold dark matter. As a consequence of the new physics, CDM and baryon distributions evolve differently both in the linear and in the nonlinear regime of structure formation. Already on large scales a linear bias develops between these two components, which is further enhanced by the nonlinear evolution. We also find, in contrast with previous work, that the density profiles of CDM halos are less concentrated in coupled dark energy cosmologies compared with LCDM, and that this feature does not depend on the initial conditions setup, but is a specific consequence of the extra physics induced by the coupling. Also, the baryon fraction in halos in the coupled models is significantly reduced below the universal baryon fraction. These features alleviate tensions between observations and the LCDM model on small scales. Our methodology is ideally suited to explore the predictions of coupled dark energy models in the fully non-linear regime, which can provide powerful constraints for the viable parameter space of such scenarios.
We use a hydrodynamical N-body code to generate simulated maps, of size one square degree, of the thermal SZ effect. We study three different cosmologies; the currently-favoured low-density model with a cosmological constant, a critical-density model and a low-density open model. We stack simulation boxes corresponding to different redshifts in order to include contributions to the Compton y-parameter out to the highest necessary redshifts. Our main results are: 1. The mean y-distortion is around $4 \times 10^{-6}$ for low-density cosmologies, and $1 \times 10^{-6}$ for critical density. These…
Observations with the SZ effect constitute a powerful new tool for investigating clusters and constraining cosmological parameters. Of particular interest is to investigate how the SZ signal correlates with other cluster properties, such as the mass, temperature and X-ray luminosities. In this presentation we quantify these relations for clusters found in hydrodynamical simulations of large scale structure and investigate their dependence on the effects of radiative cooling and pre-heating.
For dynamical dark energy cosmologies we carry out a series of N-body gravitational simulations, achieving percent level accuracy in the relative mass power spectra at any redshift. Such accuracy in the power spectrum is necessary for next generation cosmological mass probes. Our matching procedure reproduces the CMB distance to last scattering and delivers subpercent level power spectra at z=0 and z~3. We discuss the physical implications for probing dark energy with surveys of large scale structure.
We present the results of weak gravitational lensing statistics in four different cosmological $N$-body simulations. The data has been generated using an algorithm for the three-dimensional shear, which makes use of a variable softening facility for the $N$-body particle masses, and enables a physical interpretation for the large-scale structure to be made. Working in three-dimensions also allows the correct use of the appropriate angular diameter distances. Our results are presented on the basis of the filled beam approximation in view of the variable particle softening scheme in our algorith…
We discuss variants of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) dominated cosmological models that give good agreement with a range of observations. We consider models with hot dark matter, tilt, $Ω< 1$, or a cosmological constant. We also discuss the sensitivity of the results to other parameters, such as the Hubble parameter and the baryon fraction. We obtain constraints by combining the COBE data, cluster abundances, abundance of damped Lyman-$α$ systems at $z\sim3$, the small-angle Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy, and the small-scale non-linear power spectrum. We present non-linear power spectra from…
We present a new Eulerian code able to follow the evolution of large-scale structures in the Universe in the weakly nonlinear regime. We compare test results with a N-body code and analytical results.
The Lagrangian perturbation theory on Friedman-Lemaitre cosmologies investigated and solved up to the second order in earlier papers (Buchert 1992, Buchert \& Ehlers 1993) is evaluated up to the third order. On its basis a model for non-linear clustering applicable to the modeling of large-scale structure in the Universe for generic initial conditions is formulated. A truncated model is proposed which represents the ``main body'' of the perturbation sequence in the early non-linear regime by neglecting all gravitational sources which describe interaction of the perturbations. However, I also g…
We study the formation of tidal tails in pairs of merging disk galaxies with structural properties motivated by current theories of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies. In a recent study, Dubinski, Mihos & Hernquist (1996) showed that the formation of prominent tidal tails can be strongly suppressed by massive and extended dark haloes. For the large halo-to-disk mass ratio expected in CDM cosmologies their sequence of models failed to produce strong tails like those observed in many well-known pairs of interacting galaxies. In order to test whether this effect can constrain the viability of CDM…
We analyze high resolution, N-body hydrodynamical simulations of fiducial galaxy clusters to probe tidal stripping of the dark matter subhalos. These simulations include a prescription for star formation allowing us to track the fate of the stellar component as well. We investigate the effect of tidal stripping on cluster galaxies hosted in these dark matter subhalos as a function of cluster-centric radius. To quantify the extent of the dark matter halos of cluster galaxies, we introduce the half mass radius r_half as a diagnostic, and study its evolution with projected cluster-centric distanc…
We present the results of a series of N-body simulations in cosmologies where dark matter (DM) is coupled to dark energy (DE), so easing the cosmic coincidence problem. The dark-dark coupling introduces two novel effects in N-body dynamics: (i) DM particle masses vary with time; (ii) gravity between DM particles is ruled by a constant $G^{*}$, greater than Newton's constant $G$, holding in other 2-body interactions. As a consequence, baryons and DM particle distributions develop a large scale bias. Here we investigate DE models with Ratra-Peebles (RP) potentials; the dark-dark coupling is set …
We have carried out a comparative analysis of the properties of dark matter halos in N-body and hydrodynamical simulations. We analyze their density profiles, shapes and kinematical properties with the aim of assessing the effects that hydrodynamical processes might produce on the evolution of the dark matter component. The simulations performed allow us to reproduce dark matter halos with high resolution, although the range of circular velocities is limited. We find that for halos with circular velocities of $[150-200] km s^{-1}$ at the virial radius, the presence of baryons affects the evolu…
We explore the dependence of the central logarithmic slope of dark matter halo density profiles $α$ on the spectral index $n$ of the linear matter power spectrum $P(k)$ using cosmological $N$-body simulations of scale-free models (i.e. $P(k) \propto k^n$). For each of our simulations we identify samples of well resolved haloes in dynamical equilibrium and we analyse their mass profiles. By parameterising the mass profile using a ``generalised'' Navarro, Frenk & White profile in which the central logarithmic slope $α$ is allowed to vary while preserving the $r^{-3}$ asymptotic form at large rad…
We perform a detailed analysis of the statistical significance of a concentration of Lyman break galaxies at $z \sim 3$ recently discovered by Steidel et al. (1997), using a series of N-body simulations with $N=256^3$ particles in a $(100\himpc)^3$ comoving box. While the observed number density of Lyman break galaxies at $z\sim3$ implies that they correspond to systems with dark matter halos of $\simlt 10^{12}M_\odot$, the resulting clustering of such objects on average is not strong enough to be reconciled with the concentration if it is fairly common; we predict one similar concentration ap…
We analyse the number density and radial distribution of substructures and satellite galaxies using cosmological simulations that follow the gas dynamics of a baryonic component, including shock heating, radiative cooling and star formation within the hierarchical concordance LCDM model. We find that the dissipation of the baryons greatly enhances the survival of subhaloes, expecially in the galaxy core, resulting in a radial distribution of satellite galaxies that closely follows the overall mass distribution in the inner part of the halo. Hydrodynamical simulations are necessary to resolve t…
The presence of dark energy in the Universe is inferred directly and indirectly from a large body of observational evidence. The simplest and most theoretically appealing possibility is the vacuum energy density (cosmological constant). However, although in agreement with current observations, such a possibility exacerbates the well known cosmological constant problem, requiring a natural explanation for its small, but nonzero, value. In this paper we focus our attention on another dark energy candidate, one arising from gravitational \emph{leakage} into extra dimensions. We investigate observ…
We examine, from both a qualitative and a numerical point of view, the evolution of Kantowski--Sachs cosmological models whose source is a mixture of a gas of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP's) and a radiative gas made up of a ``tightly coupled'' mixture of electrons, baryons and photons from the end of nucleosynthesis up to the duration of radiative interactions. In this cosmic era annihilation processes are negligible, while the WIMP's only interact gravitationally with the radiative gas and the latter behaves as a single dissipative fluid that can be studied within a hydrodynamic…
We apply several statistical estimators to high-resolution N-body simulations of two currently viable cosmological models: a mixed dark matter model, having $Ω_ν=0.2$ contributed by two massive neutrinos (C+2\nuDM), and a Cold Dark Matter model with Cosmological Constant (\LambdaCDM) with $Ω_0=0.3$ and h=0.7. Our aim is to compare simulated galaxy samples with the Perseus-Pisces redshift survey (PPS). We consider the n-point correlation functions (n=2-4), the N-count probability functions P_N, including the void probability function P_0, and the underdensity probability function U_ε(where εfix…
We use hydrodynamical N-body simulations to study the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We construct sets of maps, one square degree in size, in three different cosmological models. We confirm earlier calculations that on the scales studied the kinetic effect is much smaller than the thermal (except close to the thermal null point), with an rms dispersion smaller by about a factor five in the Rayleigh-Jeans region. We study the redshift dependence of the rms distortion and the pixel distribution at the present epoch. We compute the angular power spectra of the maps, including their redshift d…
A new N-body and hydrodynamical code, called RAMSES, is presented. It has been designed to study structure formation in the universe with high spatial resolution. The code is based on Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) technique, with a tree based data structure allowing recursive grid refinements on a cell-by-cell basis. The N-body solver is very similar to the one developed for the ART code (Kravtsov et al. 97), with minor differences in the exact implementation. The hydrodynamical solver is based on a second-order Godunov method, a modern shock-capturing scheme known to compute accurately the t…
We derive a new class of exact solutions of Einstein's equations providing a physically plausible hydrodynamical description of cosmological matter in the radiative era ($10^6 K > T > 10^3 K$), between nucleosynthesis and decoupling. The solutions are characterized by the Lema\^ıtre-Tolman -Bondi metric with a viscous fluid source, subjected to the following conditions: (a) the equilibrium state variables satisfy the equation of state of a mixture of an ultra-relativistic and a non-relativistic ideal gases, where the internal energy of the latter has been neglected, (b) the particle numbers of…
A modified version of the extended Press-Schechter model for the growth of dark-matter haloes was introduced in two previous papers with the aim at explaining the mass-density relation shown by haloes in high-resolution cosmological simulations. In this model major mergers are well separated from accretion, thereby allowing a natural definition of halo formation and destruction. This makes it possible to derive analytic expressions for halo formation and destruction rates, the mass accretion rate, and the probability distribution functions of halo formation times and progenitor masses. The sto…
The case of a coupling between dark energy and matter (Coupled Quintessence) or gravity (Extended Quintessence) has recently attracted a deep interest and has been widely investigated both in the Einstein and in the Jordan frames (EF, JF), within scalar tensor theories. Focusing on the simplest models proposed so far, in this paper we study the relation existing between the two scenarios, isolating the Weyl scaling which allows to express them in the EF and JF. Moreover, we perform a comparative study of the behavior of linear perturbations in both scenarios, which turn out to behave in a mark…
We use high resolution N-Body/SPH simulations to study the hydrodynamical and gravitational interaction between the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Milky Way. We model the dark and hot extended halo components as well as the stellar/gaseous disks of the two galaxies. Both galaxies are embedded in extended cuspy LCDM dark matter halos. We follow the previous four Gyrs of the LMC's orbit such that it ends up with the correct location and orientation on the sky. Tidal forces elongate the LMC's disk, forcing a bar and creating a strong warp and diffuse stellar halo, although very few stars become u…
We generate mock galaxy catalogues for a grid of different cosmologies, using rescaled N-body simulations in tandem with a semi-analytic model run using consistent parameters. Because we predict the galaxy bias, rather than fitting it as a nuisance parameter, we obtain an almost pure constraint on sigma_8 by comparing the projected two-point correlation function we obtain to that from the SDSS. A systematic error arises because different semi-analytic modelling assumptions allow us to fit the r-band luminosity function equally well. Combining our estimate of the error from this source with the…
We intend to make sets of cosmological simulations available, with a large number of different output times that may be placed side-by-side to produce a complete history of the universe stretching back to high redshift. Currently there is only one series of runs under preparation as a trial. Gauging by the response, we will consider further releases. The first series consists of N-body simulations with CDM-like spectra (Gamma=0.25) in a 100/h Mpc box, in three different cosmologies: Einstein-de Sitter, low-density flat and low-density open. The parameters of each run are: 1) Run 501: Omega=1.0…
High-resolution N-body simulations of hierarchical cosmologies have shown that the density and velocity dispersion profiles of dark-matter haloes display well-definite universal forms whose origin remains unknown. In the present paper, we calculate the internal structure of haloes expected to arise in any such cosmologies by simply taking into account that halo growth proceeds through an alternate sequence of discrete major mergers and long periods of gentle accretion. Major mergers cause the violent relaxation of the system subject to the boundary conditions imposed by accreting layers beginn…
We combine data from a number of N-body simulations to predict the abundance of dark halos in Cold Dark Matter universes over more than 4 orders of magnitude in mass. A comparison of different simulations suggests that the dominant uncertainty in our results is systematic and is smaller than 10--30% at all masses, depending on the halo definition used. In particular, our ``Hubble Volume'' simulations of \tcdm and \lcdm cosmologies allow the abundance of massive clusters to be predicted with uncertainties well below those expected in all currently planned observational surveys. We show that for…
We present the results of an attempt to adapt the distribution function formalism to characterize large-scale structures like clusters of galaxies that form in a cosmological N-body simulation. While galaxy clusters are systems that are not strictly in equilibrium, we show that their evolution can nevertheless be studied using a physically motivated extension of the language of equilibrium stellar dynamics. Restricting our analysis to the virialized region, a prescription to limit the accessible phase-space is presented, which permits the construction of both the isotropic and the anisotropic …
N--body + hydrodynamical simulations of formation and evolution of galaxy groups in a LambdaCDM cosmology have been performed. The properties of the galaxy populations in 12 groups are here discussed, with focus on the colour-magnitude relation in both normal and fossil groups.
The angular-diameter distance D_A of a galaxy cluster can be measuread by combining its X-ray emission with the cosmic microwave background fluctution due to the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The application of this distance indicator usually assumes that the cluster is spherically symmetric, the gas is distributed according to the isothermal beta-model, and the X-ray temperature is an unbiased measure of the electron temperature. We test these assumptions with galaxy clusters extracted from an extended set of cosmological N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of a LCDM concordance cosmology, which in…
