We present radio continuum polarimetry observations of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 253 which possesses a very bright radio halo. Using the vertical synchrotron emission profiles and the lifetimes of cosmic-ray electrons, we determined the cosmic-ray bulk speed as (300+/-30) km/s, indicating the presence of a galactic wind in this galaxy. The large-scale magnetic field was decomposed into a toroidal axisymmetric component in the disk and a poloidal component in the halo. The poloidal component shows a prominent X-shaped magnetic field structure centered on the nucleus, similar to the magnetic field observed in other edge-on galaxies. Faraday rotation measures indicate that the poloidal field has an odd parity (antisymmetric). NGC 253 offers the possibility to compare the magnetic field structure with models of galactic dynamos and/or galactic wind flows.
We present a unified picture of active galactic nuclei which we construct from a detailed model of line emission in the active source in NGC 4151. In this scheme NGC 4151 can be regarded as a typical active nucleus, special only in its orientation. This alleviates a number of problems with a unified picture based on a dusty molecular torus with a fixed structure (to which NGC 4151 appears as an anomaly)
We present multi-colour broad band CCD photometric observations of a few thousands of stars located region of the galactic globular clusters NGC 1904 and NGC 6341. These observations are used to generate their deep colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to study overall morphologies of sub giant, red giant, asymptotic giant and horizontal branches. We also determine the main sequence morphology of the NGC 6341. A comparison of their CMDs with the theoretical isochrones given by Demarque et al. (1996) indicates an age of 14 and 16 Gyr for NGC 1904 and NGC 6341 GGCs respectively. We present a new meth…
The nuclear gas kinematics probed by water vapor maser emission has shown that two nearby active galaxies, NGC 1068 and NGC 4258, have a supermassive object in their nuclei and their masses are nearly comparable; a few 10^7 solar masses. Nevertheless, the activity of the central engine of NGC 1068 is more powerful by two orders of magnitude than that of NGC 4258. Since it is generally considered that the huge luminosities of active galactic nuclei are attributed to the mass accretion onto a supermassive black hole, the above observational results suggest that the accretion rate in NGC 1068 is …
We have carried out the wind analysis of six A-type supergiants in NGC 300. The derived Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relationship is compared with that of Galactic and M31 blue supergiants and with theoretical models.
We analyse CCD broad band (UBV(RI)c) photometric data obtained in the fields of the poorly studied open clusters NGC 2425 and NGC 2635. Both clusters are found to be of intermediate age thus increasing the population of open clusters known to be of the age of, or older than, the Hyades. More explicitly, we find that NGC 2425 is a 2.2 Gyr old cluster, probably of solar metallicity, located at 3.5 kpc from the Sun. NGC 2635 is a Hyades age (600 Myr) cluster located at a distance of 4.0 kpc from the Sun. Its Colour Magnitude Diagram reveals that it is extremely metal poor for its age and position…
Recently, the CANGAROO-II telescope detected diffuse TeV gamma-ray emission from a nearby edge-on starburst galaxy, NGC 253. The emission mechanism is discussed in this report. We review the emissions of radio-to-TeV gamma-rays from NGC 253, and present a model of the non-thermal emissions due to synchrotron radiations and inverse Compton scatterings. A halo model successfully explains the multiband spectrum of NGC 253.
We report on $VI$ CCD photometry of two fields centered in the region of the open clusters NGC 6404 and NGC 6583 down to $V=22.0$. These clusters have never been studied insofar, and we provide for the first time estimates of their fundamental parameters, namely, radial extent, age, distance and reddening. We find that NGC 6404 radius is 2.0 arcmin, as previously proposed, while NGC 6583 radius is 1.0 arcmin, significantly lower than previous estimates. Both clusters turn out to be of intermediate age (0.5-1.0 Gyr old), and located inside the solar ring, at a Galactocentric distance of about 6…
We present CCD broad band photometric observations in the fields of the Third Galactic Quadrant open clusters NGC 2580 and NGC 2588 ($V(I)_C$ and $UBV(RI)_C$ respectively). From the analysis of our data we found that NGC 2580 is located at a distance of about 4 kpc and its age is close to 160 Myr. As for NGC 2588, it is placed at about 5 kpc from the Sun and is 450 Myr old. This means that NGC 2588 belongs to the extension of the Perseus arm, whereas NGC 2580 is closer to the local arm structure. The luminosity functions (LFs) have been constructed for both clusters down to $V \sim 20$ togethe…
Galactic globular clusters harbour binary systems that are detected as faint X-ray sources. These close binaries are thought to play an important role in the stability of the clusters by liberating energy and delaying the inevitable core collapse of globular clusters. The inventory of close binaries and their identification is therefore essential. We present XMM-Newton observations of two Galactic globular clusters: NGC 2808 and NGC 4372. We use X-ray spectral and variability analysis combined with ultra-violet observations made with the XMM-Newton optical monitor and published data from the H…
We present the first comparisons of a newly developed Galactic Structure and Kinematic Model to magnitude and color counts, as well as relative proper motions, in the fields of the open clusters NGC 188 [(l, b)= (122.8 deg, +22.4 deg)] and NGC 3680 [(l,b)= (286.8 deg, +16.9 deg)]. In addition to determining the reddening toward these two clusters, it is shown that starcounts at intermediate Galactic latitudes in the range 11< V< 17 allow us to constrain the model scale-height for disk subgiants. We obtain a mean value of 250 +/- 32 pc, in agreement with previous determinations of the scale-hei…
We have measured the host-galaxy starlight contribution to four lower-luminosity AGNs (NGC 3516, NGC 4593, IC 4329A, and NGC 7469). We include these objects with new broad line region measurements for NGC 4151 and NGC 4593 to present a revised version of the radius-luminosity relationship for AGNs.
We present JHKs near-infrared CCD photometric study for the Galactic open clusters NGC 1641 and NGC 2394. These clusters have never been studied before, and we provide, for the first time, the cluster parameters; reddening, distance, metallicity and age. NGC 1641 is an old open cluster with age 1.6 +/- 0.2 Gyr, metallicity [Fe/H] = 0.0 +/- 0.2 dex, distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 10.4 +/- 0.3 mag (d = 1.2 +/- 0.2 kpc), and reddening E(B-V) = 0.10 +/- 0.05 mag. The parameters for the other old open cluster NGC 2394 are estimated to be age = 1.1 +/- 0.2 Gyr, [Fe/H] = 0.0 +/- 0.2 dex, (m-M)_0 = 9.1 +/…
We report on new observations obtained with the Magellan Clay-telescope of a tiny dust patch in the Sa-galaxy NGC 3269 in the Antlia galaxy cluster. It has already been suspected to be a projected Galactic foreground cloud. In this case a size of about 4 arcsec and a maximum absorption of ~1 mag in the B-band would make it unique so far. We present further evidence for its Galactic nature from imaging under excellent seeing conditions (0.3-0.6 arcsec). This dust cloud could be the first optically identified counterpart of a new type of molecular cloud recently discovered by Heithausen (2004).
We find that a non-axisymmetric bow shock model, with an appropriate choice of parameters, could fit the line splitting velocity field of the cone-like H$α$ nebula in NGC 4945 better than a canonical cone model. Meanwhile, the bow shock model could also reproduce the morphology of the H$α$ nebula. The bow shock results from the interaction of the galactic superwinds with a giant HII region. It is implied that the starburst ring or disk around the galactic nucleus should be generating strong winds, and the bright H$α$ knot northwest of the nucleus be suffering an anisotropic mass loss process.
(Abridged) We present deep, Chandra spectral imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569. The unprecedented spatial resolution allows us to spatially identify the components of the integrated \x spectrum. Fitted spectral models require an intrinsic absorption component and higher metal abundances than previous studies indicated. Our results provide the first direct evidence for metal-enriched winds from dwarf starburst galaxies.
The Galactic HII region NGC 2579 has stayed undeservedly unexplored due to identification problems which persisted until recently. Both NGC 2579 and its companion ESO 370-9 have been misclassified as planetary or reflection nebula, confused with each other and with other objects. Due to its high surface brightness, high excitation, angular size of few arcminutes and relatively low interstellar extinction, NGC 2579 is an ideal object for investigations in the optical range. Located in the outer Galaxy, NGC 2579 is an excellent object for studying the Galactic chemical abundance gradients. In th…
We have carried out a new photometric study of the remote Galactic globular cluster NGC 2419, using proprietary and archive B,V,I time-series CCD photometry of the cluster, that allowed us to discover a large number of new variable stars and to obtain a new colour magnitude diagram that reaches V ~26 mag over a field of 50X43 square arcmin centered on NGC 2419. The new variables include 39 RR Lyrae and 11 SX Phoenicis stars. The pulsation properties of the new RR Lyrae stars confirm and strengthen the classification of NGC 2419 as an Oosterhoff type II cluster.
We obtained high-resolution UVES/FLAMES observations of a sample of nine old open clusters spanning a wide range of ages and Galactocentric radii. The goal of the project is to investigate the radial metallicity gradient in the disk, as well as the abundance of key elements (alpha and Fe-peak elements). In this paper we present the results for the metallicity of three clusters: NGC 2660 (age ~1 Gyr, Galactocentric distance of 8.68 kpc), NGC 3960 (~ 1 Gyr, 7.80 kpc), and Be 32 (~6-7 Gyr, 11.30 kpc). For Be 32 and NGC 2660, our study provides the first metallicity determination based on high-res…
In this paper we present multiband optical and UV Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the two Galactic globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441. We have obtained the first UV color-magnitude diagrams for NGC 6388 and NGC 6441. These diagrams confirm previous results, obtained in optical bands, about the presence of a sizeable stellar population of extremely hot horizontal branch stars. At least in NGC 6388, we find a clear indication that at the hot end of the horizontal branch the distribution of stars forms a hook-like feature, closely resembling those observed in NGC 2808 and Omega Centauri…
The variable star population of the galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 (C0512-400) has been studied by CCD photometry, from observations made in the B, V, and I bands during 1993-4. Light curves are presented for 29 variables, seven of which are new discoveries. The behavior of the RR lyraes in the period-temperature diagram appears normal when compared to clusters which bracket the NGC 1851 metallicity. Reddening and metallicity are re-evaluated, with no compelling evidence to change from accepted values. Photometry for stars within an annulus with radii 80 and 260 arcsec agrees to better tha…
We report on $BVI$ CCD photometry of a field centered in the region of the open cluster NGC 1883 down to V=21. This cluster has never been studied insofar, and we provide for the first time estimates of its fundamental parameters, namely radial extent, age, distance and reddening. We find that the cluster has a radius of about 2.5 arcmin, and shows signatures of dynamical relaxation. NGC 1883 is located in the anti-center direction, and exhibits a reddening in the range E$(B-V)= 0.23-0.35$, depending on the metal abundance. It turns out to be of intermediate-age (1 billion years old), and quit…
An early analysis of Chandra observations of the planetary nebula NGC 6543 suggested that the location and the derived temperature for the X-ray emitting region is inconsistent with the abundances measured for this object (Chu et al. 2001). We revisit observations of this source (following significant updates to both the reprocessing and extraction software) in order to propose a resolution to this apparent anomaly. Our re-analysis using abundances found from observations in the infrared, optical, and ultraviolet suggests that the location and temperature of the X-ray emission from NGC 6543 is…
Spectroscopic data in wavelengths 900--3000A have been obtained in a low flux state of the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516. The line profiles show P Cygni characteristics, particularly in O VI 1032A, and are compared with data from an earlier higher state. The profiles are suggestive of, and consistent with, an accelerating wind driven by a disk continuum source, in which the ionisation radii have changed. This scenario may apply to the formation of other broad emission lines in AGN.
We compare the rate of kinetic energy injected by stellar winds into the extragalactic H II region NGC 2363 to the luminosity needed to feed the observed temperature fluctuations. The kinetic luminosity associated to the winds is estimated by means of two different evolutionary synthesis codes, one of which takes into account the statistical fluctuations expected in the Initial Mass Function. We find that, even in the most favorable conditions considered by our model, such luminosity is much smaller than the luminosity needed to account for the observed temperature fluctuations. The assumption…
Thanks to the capabilities of modern telescopes and instrumentation, it is now possible to resolve single stars in external dwarf galaxies, provided they are bright enough. For galactic regions with deep enough photometry, detailed colour-magnitude diagrams are constructed, from which the star formation history and the initial mass function can be inferred by comparison with synthetic diagrams. Both the star formation history and the initial mass function are free parameters of galactic chemical evolution models. In this contribution we show how constraining them through high resolution photom…
Photometry with HST's ACS reveals that the subgiant branch (SGB) of the globular cluster NGC 1851 splits into two well-defined branches. If the split is due only to an age effect, the two SGBs would imply two star formation episodes separated by $\sim$ 1 Gyr. We discuss other anomalies in NGC 1851 which could be interpreted in terms of a double stellar population. Finally, we compare the case of NGC 1851 with the other two globulars known to host multiple stellar populations, and show that all three clusters differ in several important respects.
We introduce a new survey of massive stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds using the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Here we present observations of 269 Galactic stars with the FLAMES-Giraffe Spectrograph (R ~ 25,000), in fields centered on the open clusters NGC 3293, NGC 4755 and NGC 6611. These data are supplemented by a further 50 targets observed with the Fibre-Fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS, R = 48,000). Following a description of our scientific motivations and target selection criteria, the data r…
The central star of this nebula has an observed intense magnetic field and the fast wind is no longer present, indicating that a back flow process has probably developed. Long-slit, spatially resolved echelle spectra have been obtained across the main body of NGC 1360 and over its system of bipolar jets. Deep images of the knotty structures of the jets have also been obtained. The data allow a detailed study of the structure and kinematics of this object and the results are modeled considering the effects of a magnetic collimation process in the development of the nebula and then switching off…
We report on absolute proper-motion measurements of an H2O maser source in the NGC 281 West molecular cloud, which is located ~320 pc above the Galactic plane and is associated with an HI loop extending from the Galactic plane. We have conducted multi-epoch phase-referencing observations of the maser source with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) over a monitoring period of 6 months since May 2006. We find that the H2O maser features in NGC 281 West are systematically moving toward the southwest and further away from the Galactic plane with a vertical velocity of ~20-30 km/s at its es…
Deep images in the 10 micron spectral region have been obtained for five massive Galactic globular clusters, NGC 104 (=47 Tuc), NGC 362, NGC 5139 (omega Cen), NGC 6388, NGC 7078 (=M15) and NGC 6715 (=M54) in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal using ISOCAM in 1997. A significant sample of bright giants have an ISOCAM counterpart but only < 20% of these have a strong mid-IR excess indicative of dusty circumstellar envelopes. From a combined physical and statistical analysis we derive mass loss rates and frequency. We find that i) significant mass loss occurs only at the very end of the Red Giant B…
We present high resolution UVES+VLT spectroscopic observations of 61 stars in the extended blue horizontal branches of the Galactic globular clusters NGC 1904 (M79), NGC 2808, NGC 6093 (M80), and NGC 7078 M15). Our data reveal for the first time the presence in NGC 1904 of a sizable population of fast (v sin(i) >= 20 km/s) horizontal branch (HB) rotators, confined to the cool end of the EHB, similar to that found in M13. We also confirm the fast rotators already observed in NGC 7078. The cooler stars (T_eff < 11,500 K) in these three clusters show a range of rotation rates, with a group of sta…
We present a deep color magnitude diagram for the galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 (C0911-646), reaching 3 magnitudes below the main sequence turnoff. A set of local photometric standards are provided, and the mean cluster reddening and metallicity are constrained using several photometric techniques. The unusual horizontal branch morphology discovered by Sosin et al. (1997, ApJ, 480, L35) is confirmed. No significant radial population gradients are identified to within the limits of the data. We investigate the redwards color spread on the main sequemce found by Ferraro et al. (1997, A&A, 3…
M81 and NGC 4579 are two of the few low-luminosity active galactic nuclei which have an estimated mass for the central black hole, detected hard X-ray emission, and detected optical/UV emission. In contrast to the canonical ``big blue bump,'' both have optical/UV spectra which decrease with increasing frequency in a $νL_ν$ plot. Barring significant reddening by dust and/or large errors in the black hole mass estimates, the optical/UV spectra of these systems require that the inner edge of a geometrically thin, optically thick, accretion disk lies at roughly 100 Schwarzschild radii. The observe…
We present first results of a pilot project aimed at exploiting the potentiality of ground based adaptive optics imaging in the near infrared to determine the age of stellar clusters in the Galactic Bulge. We have used a combination of high resolution adaptive optics (ESO-VLT NAOS-CONICA) and wide-field (ESO-NTT-SOFI) photometry of the metal rich globular cluster NGC 6440 located towards the inner Bulge, to compute a deep color magnitude diagram from the tip of the Red Giant Branch down to J~22$, two magnitudes below the Main Sequence Turn Off (TO). The magnitude difference between the TO leve…
In this work we have investigated short time-scale variability of NGC 4051 and NGC 4388. The quasi-steady QPO's time scale of 3920$\pm$17 sec was detected for NGC 4051. For the case of NGC 4388 we investigated rapid variability of the parameters of spectral models. To obtain these results, a new "Moving Fit" method for processing of the trailed X-ray spectrograms was developed.
A study of morphology, kinematics and ionization structure of the IR merger NGC 5514, is presented. This study is based mainly on Integral 2D spectroscopy obtained on 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (La Palma, Spain) and data from CASLEO (Argentina). Clear evidence of two extra-nuclear starbursts with young outflows and LINER activity are reported. One of these outflow generate a supergiant bubble, where the emission lines and kinematics maps show 4 extended ejections. These results suggest that the bubble is in the rupture phase.
We have used the Japanese VLBI array VERA to perform high-precision astrometry of an H2O maser source in the Galactic star-forming region NGC 281 West, which has been considered to be part of a 300-pc superbubble. We successfully detected a trigonometric parallax of 0.355+/-0.030 mas, corresponding to a source distance of 2.82+/-0.24 kpc. Our direct distance determination of NGC 281 has resolved the large distance discrepancy between previous photometric and kinematic studies; likely NGC 281 is in the far side of the Perseus spiral arm. The source distance as well as the absolute proper motion…
We present abundance measurements, based on high-resolution optical spectroscopic data obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph mounted on Kueyen (Very Large Telescope UT2), for ten stars in the extended blue horizontal branch of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1904 (M79). In agreement with previous findings for other clusters, we obtain normal abundances for stars cooler than Teff ~ 11,000 K and largely anomalous abundances for hotter stars: large He depletions, and overabundances of Fe, Ti, Cr, P and Mn. The abundances of Mg, Si and Ca are roughly normal, in the hot st…
We discuss the power of time-evolving photoionization as a diagnostic tool to measure the electron density of photoionized gas. We apply this technique to a XMM-Newton observation of the ionized absorber in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051, and present the first measurements of the its volume density, its distance from the central ionizing source, and so its mass outflow rate. By extrapolating these measurements to high-luminosity, large black hole mass, quasars, we speculate that AGN winds can play important roles both in the AGN-host-galaxy and AGN-IGM feedback processes.
We present a 60 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the isolated edge-on spiral NGC 3556, together with a multiwavelength analysis of various discrete X-ray sources and diffuse X-ray features. Among 33 discrete X-ray sources detected within the I_B = 25 mag per square arcsec isophote ellipse of the galaxy, we identify a candidate for the galactic nucleus, an ultraluminous X-ray source that might be an accreting intermediate-mass black hole, a possible X-ray binary with a radio counterpart, and two radio-bright giant HII regions. We detect large amounts of extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission, which…
We present a proper motion study of the distant globular cluster NGC 7006 based on the measurement of 25 photographic plates spanning a 40-year interval. The absolute proper motion determined with respect to extragalactic objects is (-0.96, -1.14) +- (0.35, 0.40) mas/yr. The total space velocity of NGC 7006 in a Galactocentric rest frame is 279 km/s, placing the cluster on one of the most energetic orbits (Ra =102 kpc) known to date for clusters within 40-kpc from the Galactic center. We compare the orbits of four clusters that have apocentric radii larger than 80 kpc (NGC 5466, NGC 6934, NGC …
Using two epochs of HST/WFPC2 images of the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6528 we derive the proper motions of the stars and use them to separate the stars belonging to NGC 6528 from those of the Galactic bulge. The stellar sequences in theresulting colour-magnitude diagram for the cluster are significantly better determined than in previously published data. From comparison of the colour-magnitude diagram with the fiducial line for NGC 6553 from Zoccali et al. (2001) we conclude that the two globular clusters have the same age. Further, using alpha-enhanced stellar isochrones, NGC 6528 is f…
Some of the properties of the globular clusters in NGC 5128 are compared to those of Galactic globular clusters. Assuming the color- metallicity relations that hold for Galactic globular clusters then the metal-poor clusters in NGC 5128 that have [Fe/H] < -1.80 are significantly fainter than are the more metal-rich globulars in that galaxy. No such metallicity dependent luminosity difference is observed among the globular clusters associated with the Milky Way. Furthermore the NGC 5128 cluster sample contains two objects that, on the basis of their observed colors, appear to be super metal-poo…
We present echelle spectrophotometry of the Galactic H II region NGC 3576. The data have been taken with the VLT UVES echelle spectrograph in the 3100 to 10400 angstroms range. We have measured the intensities of 458 emission lines, 344 are permitted lines of H0, He0, C+, N0, N+, N++, O0, O+, Ne+, S++, Si0, Si+, Ar0 and Ar+; some of them are produced by recombination and others mainly by fluorescence. Electron temperatures and densities have been determined using different continuum and line intensity ratios. We have derived He+, C++, O+, O++ and Ne++ ionic abundances from pure recombination l…
Multi-line imaging of the nearby disk galaxy NGC 1482 with the Taurus Tunable Filter (TTF) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope reveals a remarkable hourglass-shaped [N II] 6583/H-alpha excitation structure suggestive of a galactic wind extending at least 1.5 kpc above and below the disk of the host galaxy. Long-slit spectroscopy confirms the existence of a large-scale outflow in this galaxy. The entrained wind material has [N II] 6583/H-alpha ratios in excess of unity while the disk material is characterized by H II region-like line ratios indicative of a starburst. Expansion velocities of order…
We present a broadband power spectral density function (PSD) measured from extensive RXTE monitoring data of the low-luminosity AGN NGC 4258, which has an accurate, maser-determined black hole mass of 3.9+/-0.1 * 10^7 solar masses. We constrain the PSD break timescale to be greater than 4.5 d at >90% confidence, which appears to rule out the possibility that NGC 4258 is an analogue of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) in the high/soft state. In this sense, the PSD of NGC 4258 is different to those of some more-luminous Seyferts, which appear similar to the PSDs of high/soft state X-ray binari…
We have detected seven stars with a common proper motion which are located within 2.5 arcminutes of the globular cluster NGC 6522 in the Baade's Window field of the Galactic bulge. We argue that these stars are members of the cluster, and derive a weighted mean proper motion and heliocentric radial velocity of mu_l = 1.4 +/- 0.2 mas/yr, mu_b = -6.2 +/- 0.2 mas/yr, v = -28.5 +/- 6.5 km/s. We rederive the distance to NGC 6522 (0.91 +/- 0.04 R_0, where R_0 is the Galactocentric distance) and metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.28 +/- 0.12), making use of recent revisions in the foreground extinction toward …
The results of a 0.4-10.0 keV ASCA spectral analysis of a sample of low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN; M51, NGC 3147, NGC 4258), low-ionization nuclear emission line regions (LINERs; NGC 3079, NGC 3310, NGC 3998, NGC 4579, NGC 4594) and starburst galaxies (M82, NGC 253, NGC 3628 and NGC 6946) are presented. In spite of the heterogeneous optical classifications of these galaxies, the X-ray spectra are fit well by a ``canonical'' model consisting of an optically-thin Raymond-Smith plasma ``soft'' component with T ~ 7 x 10^6 K and a ``hard'' component that can be modeled by either a power-law with a phot…
The results of 3-4 $μ$m spectroscopy towards the nuclei of NGC 3094, NGC 7172, and NGC 7479 are reported. In ground-based 8-13 $μ$m spectra, all the sources have strong absorption-like features at $\sim$10 $μ$m, but they do not have detectable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. The 3.4 $μ$m carbonaceous dust absorption features are detected towards all nuclei. NGC 3094 shows a detectable 3.3 $μ$m PAH emission feature, while NGC 7172 and NGC 7479 do not. Nuclear emission whose spectrum shows dust absorption features but no PAH emission features is thought to dominated by h…
We analyze spectra of 44 emission line stars detected in a low resolution optical spectroscopic survey of the galactic open cluster NGC 6871. The survey of 1217 stars is complete to V = 14.9 and includes stars with V < 16.5 between the zero age main sequence (ZAMS) and the 10^7 yr pre-main sequence (PMS) isochrone. Of the 44 emission line stars in this survey, 28 show obvious emission in H alpha and 16 have weak H alpha absorption (compared to H gamma). We use the reddening to separate foreground and background stars from the cluster members; the position in the HR diagram (HRD) or the presenc…
In this paper we present a detailed study of the intra-cluster reddening material in the young open clusters located around $l \sim 130^o$ using colour-excess diagrams and two-colour diagrams. The study supports the universality of the extinction curves for $λ\geq λ_J$, whereas for shorter wavelengths the curve depends upon the value of the $R_{cluster}$ (total-to-selective absorption in the cluster region). The value of $R_{cluster}$ in the case of NGC 654, NGC 869 and NGC 884 is found to be normal, whereas the value of $R_{cluster}$ in the cluster regions NGC 1502 and IC 1805 indicates an an…
We report the discovery of tidal tails around the high-latitude Galactic globular cluster NGC 5466 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. Neural networks are used to reconstruct the probability distribution of cluster stars in u,g,r,i and z space. The tails are clearly visible, once extra-galactic contaminants and field stars have been eliminated. They extend roughly 4 degrees on the sky, corresponding to about 1 kpc in projected length. The orientation of the tails is in good agreement with the cluster's Galactic orbit, as judged from the proper motion data.
In discussing the short-time variability of extragalactic X-ray sources, we focus on explaining how wavelet transform in conjunction with non-linear filtering methods are used to remove Poisson statistics and wobble-related variability from the data. This enables the resolution of their intrinsic stochastic, quasi-periodic and deterministic variable components, as well the determination of their persistence. As detailed examples we review and extend the application of these techniques to ROSAT data for the Seyfert I galaxy NGC 5548 and for the QSO 3C273. Besides illustrating the discriminating…
We present the results of Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) observations of the planetary nebulae (PNs) NGC 40 and Hen 2-99. Both PNs feature late-type Wolf-Rayet central stars that are presently driving fast ~1000 km/s, massive winds into denser, slow-moving (~10 km/s) material ejected during recently terminated asymptotic giant branch (AGB) evolutionary phases. Hence, these observations provide key tests of models of wind-wind interactions in PNs. In NGC 40, we detect faint, diffuse X-ray emission distributed within a partial annulus that lies nested within a ~40'' diameter ring of nebulosity …
Using new Chandra X-ray observations and existing XMM-Newton X-ray and Hubble far ultraviolet observations, we aim to detect and identify the faint X-ray sources belonging to the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 in order to understand their role in the evolution of globular clusters. We present a Chandra X-ray observation of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808. We classify the X-ray sources associated with the cluster by analysing their colours and variability. Previous observations with XMM-Newton and far ultraviolet observations with the Hubble Space Telescope are re-investigated to hel…
We present new Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of the LINER galaxy NGC 4278 with a linear resolution of < 0.1 pc. Our radio data reveal a two sided structure, with symmetric S-shaped jets emerging from a flat spectrum core. By comparing the positions of the components in two epochs, we measure motions corresponding to apparent velocities < 0.2 c, and to ages in the range 8.3 - 65.8 years. From our measurements, we derive that NGC 4278 has mildly relativistic jets (beta aprox 0.75), closely aligned to the line-of-sight (2 deg < theta < 4 deg). We also present a flux density histo…
We report trigonometric parallaxes for the sources NGC 7538 and Cep A, corresponding to distances of 2.65 [+0.12/-0.11] kpc and 0.70 [+0.04/-0.04] kpc, respectively. The distance to NGC 7538 is considerably smaller than its kinematic distance and places it in the Perseus spiral arm. The distance to Cep A is also smaller than its kinematic distance and places it in the Local arm or spur. Combining the distance and proper motions with observed radial velocities gives the location and full space motion of the star forming regions. We find significant deviations from circular Galactic orbits for t…
We present deep luminosity functions derived from HST STIS data for three rich LMC clusters (NGC 1805, NGC 1868, and NGC 2209), and for one Galactic globular cluster (NGC 6553). All of the LMC cluster luminosity functions are roughly consistent with a Salpeter IMF or with the solar neighbourhood IMF from Kroupa, Tout & Gilmore (1993). They continue to rise at least to 0.7 Msun. NGC 1868 shows evidence for mass segregation which may be primordial. A comparison of deep luminsoisty functions for seven Galactic globulars shows that the luminosity functions are eroded at low masses by amounts that …
We present the results of a $BVI$ photometric study of the globular cluster NGC 6517 using CCD images obtained at the prime focus of the CFHT. From the resultant color-magnitude diagram, we infer that the cluster is differentially reddened and develop a method for determining the amplitude of this effect, which amounts to \( \sim 0.4 \) mag in \( (V-I) \) across our $\sim 4$ arc-min field. From the corrected $V_0,$ $(V-I)_0$ color-magnitude diagram, we derive the metallicity and distance modulus of the cluster. Our values for the mean foreground reddening ($E(B-V) = 1.10 \pm 0.10$) and metalli…
We report the discovery of a new HI ring around the S0 galaxy NGC 1533. The ring orbits at a radius of 35 kpc, well outside the optical extent of the galaxy. We have conducted N-body/SPH numerical simulations to show this HI ring could be the merger remnant of a tidally destroyed galaxy. We find no optical component associated with the HI ring. However, observations hint at H-alpha emission associated with the SE part of the ring only. The H-alpha is in the form of a few very small isolated emission line regions. The large HI velocity dispersions (up to 30 km/s) and velocity gradients (up to 5…
