Given a random word of size $n$ whose letters are drawn independently from an ordered alphabet of size $m$, the fluctuations of the shape of the random RSK Young tableaux are investigated, when $n$ and $m$ converge together to infinity. If $m$ does not grow too fast and if the draws are uniform, then the limiting shape is the same as the limiting spectrum of the GUE. In the non-uniform case, a control of both highest probabilities will ensure the convergence of the first row of the tableau toward the Tracy--Widom distribution.
We consider the length L of the longest common subsequence of two randomly uniformly and independently chosen n character words over a k-ary alphabet. Subadditivity arguments yield that the expected value of L, when normalized by n, converges to a constant C_k. We prove a conjecture of Sankoff and Mainville from the early 80's claiming that C_k\sqrt{k} goes to 2 as k goes to infinity.
In this paper, we investigate the fractal uncertainty principle (FUP) for discrete Cantor sets, which are determined by an alphabet from a base of digits. Consider the base of M digits and the alphabets of cardinality A such that all the corresponding Cantor sets have a fixed dimension 0<log A/log M<2/3. We prove that the FUP with an improved exponent over Dyatlov-Jin (arXiv:1608.02238) holds for almost all alphabets, asymptotically as M tends to infinity. Our result provides the best possible exponent when the Cantor sets enjoy either the strongest Fourier decay assumption or strongest additi…
The classification results for the extreme characters of two basic "big" groups, the infinite symmetric group S(infinity) and the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity), are remarkably similar. It does not seem to be possible to explain this phenomenon using a suitable extension of the Schur-Weyl duality to infinite dimension. We suggest an explanation of a different nature that does not have analogs in the classical representation theory. We start from the combinatorial/probabilistic approach to characters of "big" groups initiated by Vershik and Kerov. In this approach, the space of …
Consider the set of finite words on a totally ordered alphabet with $q$ letters. We prove that the distribution of the length of the standard right factor of a random Lyndon word with length $n$, divided by $n$, converges to: $$μ(dx)=\frac1q δ_{1}(dx) + \frac{q-1}q \mathbf{1}_{[0,1)}(x)dx,$$ when $n$ goes to infinity. The convergence of all moments follows. This paper completes thus the results of \cite{Bassino}, giving the asymptotics of the mean length of the standard right factor of a random Lyndon word with length $n$ in the case of a two letters alphabet.
Let $(X_n)_{n \ge 0}$ be an irreducible, aperiodic, homogeneous Markov chain, with state space an ordered finite alphabet of size $m$. Using combinatorial constructions and weak invariance principles, we obtain the limiting shape of the associated Young tableau as a multidimensional Brownian functional. Since the length of the top row of the Young tableau is also the length of the longest (weakly) increasing subsequence of $(X_k)_{1\le k \le n}$, the corresponding limiting law follows. We relate our results to a conjecture of Kuperberg by showing that, under a cyclic condition, a spectral char…
We investigate the large deviations of the shape of the random RSK Young diagrams associated with a random word of size $n$ whose letters are independently drawn from an alphabet of size $m=m(n)$. When the letters are drawn uniformly and when both $n$ and $m$ converge together to infinity, $m$ not growing too fast with respect to $n$, the large deviations of the shape of the Young diagrams are shown to be the same as that of the spectrum of the traceless GUE. In the non-uniform case, a control of both highest probabilities will ensure that the length of the top row of the diagram satisfies a l…
We consider the set of finite random words $\mathcal A^\star$, with independent letters drawn from a finite or infinite totally ordered alphabet according to a general probability distribution. On a specific subset of $\mathcal A^\star$, considering certain factorization of the words which are labelled with the ranks, base on the lexicographical order, we prove that the normalized position of the ranks of factors, are uniform, when the length of the word goes to infinity.
We show that the exponent in the inverse power law of word frequencies for the monkey-at-the-typewriter model of Zipf's law will tend towards -1 under broad conditions as the alphabet size increases to infinity and the letter probabilities are specified as the values from a random division of the unit interval. This is proved utilizing a strong limit theorem for log-spacings due to Shao and Hahn.
Consider random Young diagrams with a fixed number n of boxes, where the probability distribution on diagrams is determined by the Plancherel measure. That is, the weight of a diagram is proportional to the squared dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n. As n goes to infinity, the boundary of the (suitably scaled) random diagram concentrates near a curve Omega (Logan-Shepp 1977, Vershik-Kerov 1977). In 1993, Kerov announced a central limit theorem describing Gaussian fluctuations of random diagrams around the limit shape Omega. Here we propose a re…
Let $(X_n)_{n \ge 0}$ be an irreducible, aperiodic, homogeneous Markov chain, with state space a totally ordered finite alphabet of size $m$. Using combinatorial constructions and weak invariance principles, we obtain the limiting shape of the associated RSK Young diagrams as a multidimensional Brownian functional. Since the length of the top row of the Young diagrams is also the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequences of $(X_k)_{1\le k \le n}$, the corresponding limiting law follows. We relate our results to a conjecture of Kuperberg by providing, under a cyclic condition, a spec…
Pólya urns are urns where at each unit of time a ball is drawn and replaced with some other balls according to its colour. We introduce a more general model: the replacement rule depends on the colour of the drawn ball and the value of the time ($\operatorname{mod} p$). We extend the work of Flajolet et al. on Pólya urns: the generating function encoding the evolution of the urn is studied by methods of analytic combinatorics. We show that the initial partial differential equations lead to ordinary linear differential equations which are related to hypergeometric functions (giving the exact st…
Given uniform probability on words of length M=Np+k, from an alphabet of size p, consider the probability that a word (i) contains a subsequence of letters (p, p-1,...,1) in that order and (ii) that the maximal length of the disjoint union of p-1 increasing subsequences of the word is \leq M-N . A generating function for this probability has the form of an integral over the Grassmannian of p-planes in complex C^n. The present paper shows that the asymptotics of this probability, when N tends to infinity, is related to the kth moment of the chi^2-distribution of parameter 2p^2. This is related …
We study a family of measures originating from the signatures of the irreducible components of representations of the unitary group, as the size of the group goes to infinity. Given a random signature $λ$ of length $N$ with counting measure $\mathbf{m}$, we obtain a random signature $μ$ of length $N-1$ through projection onto a unitary group of lower dimension. The signature $μ$ interlaces with the signature $λ$, and we record the data of $μ,λ$ in a random rectangular Young diagram $w$. We show that under a certain set of conditions on $λ$, both $\mathbf{m}$ and $w$ converge as $N\to\infty$. W…
We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest weakly increasing and strongly decreasing subsequences in words of length N from an alphabet of k letters. We find Toeplitz determinant representations for the exponential generating functions (on N) of these distribution functions and show that they are expressible in terms of solutions of Painlevé V equations. We show further that in the weakly increasing case the generating function gives the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue in the k x k Laguerre random matrix ensemble and that the distribution itself has, after centering an…
A locally uniform random permutation is generated by sampling $n$ points independently from some absolutely continuous distribution $ρ$ on the plane and interpreting them as a permutation by the rule that $i$ maps to $j$ if the $i$th point from the left is the $j$th point from below. As $n$ tends to infinity, decreasing subsequences in the permutation will appear as curves in the plane, and by interpreting these as level curves, a union of decreasing subsequences give rise to a surface. We show that, under the correct scaling, for any $r\ge0$, the largest union of $\lfloor r\sqrt{n}\rfloor$ de…
We compute the limiting distributions of the lengths of the longest monotone subsequences of random (signed) involutions with or without conditions on the number of fixed points (and negated points) as the sizes of the involutions tend to infinity. The resulting distributions are, depending on the number of fixed points, (1) the Tracy-Widom distributions for the largest eigenvalues of random GOE, GUE, GSE matrices, (2) the normal distribution, or (3) new classes of distributions which interpolate between pairs of the Tracy-Widom distributions. We also consider the second rows of the correspond…
