A significant fraction of stars in globular clusters (about 70%-85%) exhibit peculiar chemical patterns with strong abundance variations in light elements along with constant abundances in heavy elements. These abundance anomalies can be created in the H-burning core of a first generation of fast rotating massive stars and the corresponding elements are convoyed to the stellar surface thanks to rotational induced mixing. If the rotation of the stars is fast enough this matter is ejected at low velocity through a mechanical wind at the equator. It then pollutes the ISM from which a second generation of chemically anomalous stars can be formed. The proportion of anomalous to normal star observed today depends on at least two quantities : (1) the number of polluter stars; (2) the dynamical history of the cluster which may lose during its lifetime first and second generation stars in different proportions. Here we estimate these proportions based on dynamical models for globular clusters. When internal dynamical evolution and dissolution due to tidal forces are accounted for, starting from an initial fraction of anomalous stars of 10% produces a present day fraction of about 25%, still too small with respect to the observed 70-85%. In case gas expulsion by supernovae is accounted for, much higher fraction is expected to be produced. In this paper we also address the question of the evolution of the second generation stars that are He-rich, and deduce consequences for the age determination of globular clusters.
We discuss the existence of a mass-metallicity relation among galactic halo globular clusters. The lack of any luminosity-metallicity correlation in globular cluster systems has been used as an argument against self-enrichment models of cluster formation. We show that such a relation is statistically present among the galactic Old Halo globulars. This observational correlation implies that the least massive old clusters are the most metal-rich. This is in contradiction with the idea that, if globular clusters were self-enriched systems, the most metal-rich clusters would also be the most massi…
We present color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters for models with self-enrichment and pre-enrichment. The models with self-enrichment turn out to have two or more main sequence turnoff points in the color-magnitude diagram if the fraction of mass lost by the globular cluster under supernova explosions does not exceed 95-97%. The models with pre-enrichment can have only one main sequence turnoff point. We argue that the cluster wCen evolved according to a self-enrichment scenario.
We present a model of globular cluster self-enrichment. In the protogalaxy, cold and dense clouds embedded in the hot protogalactic medium are assumed to be the progenitors of galactic halo globular clusters. The massive stars of a first generation of metal-free stars, born in the central areas of the proto-globular cluster clouds, explode as Type II supernovae. The associated blast waves trigger the expansion of a supershell, sweeping all the material of the cloud, and the heavy elements released by these massive stars enrich the supershell. A second generation of stars is born in these compr…
Globular cluster ages are more than just lower limits to the age of the universe; the distribution of ages constraints the timescales for galaxy formation and chemical evolution. Globular cluster populations with different metallicities have now been detected in many galaxies, and understanding how these populations formed requires knowing their relative ages. We examined the relative ages of the two M31 globular cluster populations using their color and luminosity distributions and found that the metal-rich clusters could be up to 50% younger than the metal-poor clusters. While a small delay …
Theoretical relative ages of galactic globular clusters have recently been challenged by a semi-empirical relation. It was used to point out that tested sets of isochrones were unable to reproduce the relation and yield internally inconsistent relative ages. We find that differential cluster ages derived with the isochrones by Salaris & Weiss (1998) are reliable and internally consistent. We also show that this consistency depends on using the lower absolute ages determined by SW98, which therefore receive more empirical support. Moreover, we discuss the effect of the clusters absolute age on …
By means of analytical calculations, we explore the self-enrichment scenario for Globular Cluster formation. According to this scenario, an initial burst of star formation occurs inside the core radius of the initial gaseous distribution. The outward-propagating shock wave sweeps up a shell in which gravitational instabilities may arise, leading to the formation of a second, metal-enriched, population of stars. We find a minimum mass of the proto-globular cluster of the order of 10^6 solar masses. We also find that the observed spread in the Magnitude-Metallicity relation can be explained assu…
We explore the self-enrichment hypothesis for globular cluster formation with respect to the star formation aspect. Following this scenario, the massive stars of a first stellar generation chemically enrich the globular progenitor cloud up to Galactic halo metallicities and sweep it into an expanding spherical shell of gas. This paper investigates the ability of this swept proto-globular cloud to become gravitationally unstable and, therefore, to seed the formation of second generation stars which may later on form a globular cluster. We use a simple model based on a linear perturbation theory…
We have derived ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 globular clusters associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. Based upon a calibration with Galactic globular clusters, we find that our sample of globular clusters in NGC 4472 span a metallicity range of approximately -1.6 <= [Fe/H] <= 0 dex. There is evidence of a radial metallicity gradient in the globular cluster system, which is steeper than that seen in the underlying starlight. Determination of the absolute ages of the globular clusters is uncertain, but formally, the metal-poor population of globular clusters…
A new grid of theoretical isochrones based on the Yale stellar evolution code using the OPAL and Kurucz opacities has been constructed. The grid of isochrones spans a wide range of metallicities, helium abundances and masses. The construction of the isochrones is described and the isochrones are compared to galactic globular cluster observations. A solar calibrated mixing length ($α= 1.7$) yields a good fit to globular cluster colour-magnitude diagrams. Ages for 40 globular clusters are determined using the \dv method and the formation of the halo is discussed.
Ages of extragalactic globular clusters can provide valuable insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies. In this contribution the photometric methods of age dating old globular cluster systems are summarised. The spectroscopic approach is reviewed with an emphasis of the right choice of age diagnostics. We present a new method of quantifying the relatively best age-sensitive spectroscopic index given the quality of a data set and a certain theoretical stellar synthesis model. The relatively best diagnostic plot is constructed from the set of Lick indices and used to age date globula…
Many globular cluster systems have a distinct bimodal metallicity distribution function (MDF) which has strikingly similar features in many large galaxies of all types. By using the Milky Way cluster system as a typical example, we show that bimodal MDFs can be very well matched with a double ``accreting-box'' chemical enrichment model in which both the halo (metal-poor) and bulge (metal-rich) clusters form during an early phase of gas inflow simultaneously with star formation. However, differences in effective yield between the two phases are not enough by themselves to reproduce the observed…
We present stellar yields computed from detailed models of intermediate mass asymptotic giant branch stars of low metallicity. In this work, the whole main microphysics inputs have been updated, and in particular alpha-enhancement is explicitly taken into account both in the opacities and equation of state. The target of this work is to provide a basis to test the reliability of the AGB self-enrichment scenario for Globular Clusters of intermediate metallicity. These Globular Clusters exhibit well defined abundance patterns, which have often been interpreted as a consequence of the pollution o…
We present the results of a meta-analysis of Keck spectra of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) in a sample of eight galaxies, ranging from dwarfs to massive ellipticals. We infer ages for the metal-poor and metal-rich GCs in these galaxies through comparisons to Galactic GCs. Both subpopulations appear to be no younger than their Galactic counterparts, with ages ~> 10 Gyr. This is the largest sample of galaxies for which ages have been constrained spectroscopically. Our results support the formation of most GCs in massive galaxies at high redshift. We propose a scenario for the formation o…
Based on a model of globular cluster self-enrichment published in a previous paper, we present an explanation for the metallicity gradient observed throughout the galactic Old Halo. Our self-enrichment model is based on the ability of globular cluster progenitor clouds to retain the ejecta of a first generation of Type II Supernovae. The key point is that this ability depends on the pressure exerted on the progenitor cloud by the surrounding protogalactic medium and therefore on the location of the cloud in the protoGalaxy. Since there is no significant (if any) metallicity gradient in the who…
High resolution (R > 40 000) and high S/N spectra have been acquired with UVES on the VLT-Kueyen (Paranal Observatory, ESO Chile) for several main sequence turnoff stars (V ~ 17 mag) and subgiants at the base of the Red Giant Branch (V ~ 16 mag) in three globular clusters (NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc/NGC 104) at different metallicities (respectively [Fe/H] = -2.0; -1.5; -0.7$). Spectra for a sample of 25 field halo subdwarves have also been taken with equal resolution, but higher S/N. These data have been used to determine the abundances of several neutron-capture elements in these three clu…
We present a review of the present state of knowledge regarding the relative ages of Galactic globular clusters. First, we discuss the relevant galaxy formation models and describe the detailed predictions they make with respect to the formation timescale and chemical evolution of the globular clusters. Next, the techniques used to estimate globular cluster ages are described and evaluated with particular emphasis on the advantages and disadvantages of each method. With these techniques as a foundation, we present arguments in favor of the following assertions: 1) The age of a globular cluster…
We present a new method to compute stellar ages in Globular Clusters (GC) that is ten times more precise than the traditional isochrone fitting procedure. The method relies on accurate stellar evolutionary tracks and on photometry for GCs complete down to the main sequence, and it is based on counting number of stars in two different regions of the CMD: the red giant branch and the main-sequence. We have applied this method to the globular cluster M68 and found an age of 16.4$\pm$0.2 Gyr for $(m-M)_V=15.3$. This new method reduces the error associated to the uncertainty in the distance modulus…
First-ascent red giants with strong and very strong Li lines have just been discovered in globular clusters. Using the stellar internal prompt 7Li enrichment - mass loss scenario, we explore the possibility of 7Li enrichment in the interstellar matter of the globular cluster M3 produced by these Li-rich giants. We found that enrichment as large as 70% or more compared to the initial 7Li content of M3 can be obtained during the entire life of this cluster. However, due to the several crossings of M3 into the Galactic plane, the new 7Li will be very probably removed by ram pressure into the disk…
An analysis of ages, metallicities, and [alpha/Fe] ratios of globular cluster systems in early-type galaxies is presented, based on Lick index measurements summarized in Puzia et al. (2004, Paper I of this series). In the light of calibration and measurement uncertainties, age-metallicity degeneracy, and the relative dynamic range of Lick indices, as well as systematics introduced by abundance ratio variations (in particular variations of [alpha/Fe] ratios), we find that the most reliable age indicator for our dataset is a combination of the Lick Balmer-line indices HgammaA, Hbeta, and HdeltaA…
Relative ages for the globular cluster (GC) subpopulations in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M87 (NGC 4486) have been determined from Stroemgren photometry obtained with WFPC2 on board HST. Using a variety of population synthesis models, and assuming the GC mass at the turnover of the luminosity function is the same for both subpopulations, differential ages have been determined from the observed magnitudes at the turnover of the globular cluster luminosity function and from the mean color of each subpopulation. We measure an age difference between the two subpopulations of 0.2 +/- 1.5 (sys…
We have applied a new method to analyze the horizontal branch (HB) morphology in relation to the distribution of stars near the red giant branch (RGB) tip for the globular clusters M22, M5, M68, M107, M72, M92, M3 and 47 Tuc. This new method permits determination of the cluster ages to greater accuracy than conventional isochrone fitting. Using the method in conjunction with our new high-quality photometric data for RGB and HB stars in the first five of these clusters, we discuss the origins of the spread in color on the HB and its relation to the `second parameter' problem. The oldest cluster…
The main sequence turnoff luminosity is the best stellar `clock' which can be used to determine the absolute ages of globular clusters. This is due to the fact that it is generally assumed that the luminosity and lifetimes of main sequence globular cluster stars are independent of the properties of stellar convection and atmospheres, two areas of stellar evolution which are poorly understood. Several possible sources of error in this stellar clock are discussed, and isochrones are constructed using a variety of different physical assumptions. The mean age of the oldest globular clusters are de…
We study the evolution of the galactic globular cluster system to determine its initial mass-function and the fraction of halo stars that could have come from disrupted globular clusters. We study the cluster evolution under the influence of two destruction mechanisms: Two-body relaxation and dynamical friction. New results of N-body simulations are used for the lifetimes of clusters dissolving under the influence of two-body relaxation. Two different mass-functions are studied: A gaussian initial distribution in log(M_C) with mean mass and scatter similar to what one observes for the galactic…
Integrated spectroscopy is the method of choice for deriving the ages of unresolved stellar systems. However, hot stellar evolutionary stages, such as hot horizontal branch stars and blue straggler stars (BSSs), can affect the integrated ages measured using Balmer lines. Such hot, "non-canonical" stars may lead to overestimations of the temperature of the main sequence turn-off, and therefore underestimations of the integrated age of a stellar population. Using an optimized Hbeta index in conjunction with HST/WFPC2 color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we show that Galactic globular clusters exhibi…
We present near-infrared photometry of the globular cluster systems of the early-type galaxies NGC 4472, NGC 4594, NGC 3585, and NGC 5813. We combine these near-infrared data, obtained with PANIC at the Magellan Baade 6.5m telescope, with archival optical HST and FORS/VLT data, and use the optical to near-infrared colors to constrain the ages and metallicities of the globular clusters around the target galaxies. For NGC 4472 we have the most extensive near-infrared and optical photometric dataset. These colors show that the NGC 4472 globular cluster system has a broad metallicity distribution …
This paper discusses low mass, metal poor stars, presenting new evolutionary computations which take into account the inward diffusion of both He and heavy elements during the H burning phase. The investigation has been extended to He burning models, discussing the luminosity of the Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB) models originated from progenitors with efficient element diffusion. We find that diffusion of heavy elements plays a non-negligible role in the evolutionary paths of the model. One finds that element diffusion has a sensitive influence on evolutionary models, a less significant ef…
High precision trigonometric parallaxes from the HIPPARCOS satellite and accurate metal abundances ([Fe/H], [O/Fe], and [alpha/Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy for about 30 local subdwarfs have been used to derive distances and ages for a carefully selected sample of nine globular clusters. We find that HIPPARCOS parallaxes are smaller than the corresponding ground-based measurements leading, to a longer distance scale (~ 0.2 mag) and to ages ~ 2.8 Gyr younger. The relation between the zero age horizontal branch (ZAHB) absolute magnitude and metallicity for the nine programme clusters is…
UV-to-visual spectra of eight young star clusters in the merger remnant and protoelliptical galaxy NGC 7252, obtained with the Blanco 4-m telescope on Cerro Tololo, are presented. These clusters lie at projected distances of 3-15 kpc from the center and move with a velocity dispersion of 140+/-35 km/s in the line of sight. Seven of the clusters show strong Balmer absorption lines in their spectra [EW(H-beta)= 6-13 Angstrom], while the eighth lies in a giant HII region and shows no detectable absorption features. Based on comparisons with model-cluster spectra by Bruzual & Charlot (1996) and Br…
We report the detection of a dwarf nova (DN) in the core region of the globular cluster M55. Six outbursts were observed during 8 observing seasons spanning the period 1997-2004. The variable has an X-ray counterpart detected on images taken with the ROSAT telescope. Although we cannot offer proof of cluster membership, one can see that both the position on the H-R diagram and the X-ray flux are consistent with a bright DN at the cluster distance. According to our outburst statistics, no more than one similar DN could remain undetected in our field of view, centred at the cluster core.
We present new age and distance determinations for the Galactic Globular Clusters M55 and M5, using the luminosity function method (Jimenez & Padoan 1996, Padoan & Jimenez 1997). We find an age of $11.8 \pm 1.5$ Gyr for M55 and $11.1 \pm 0.7$ Gyr for M5. This confirms previous results (Jimenez et al. 1996, Sandquist et al. 1996) and allows to conclude that the oldest stars in the Universe are not older than 14 Gyr. We also find $m-M=14.13 \pm 0.11$ for M55, and $m-M=14.49 \pm 0.06$ for M5. These values agree with the ones obtained using the tip of the red giant branch (Jimenez et al. 1996) and…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary OGLEGC-228 (V228) to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. Based on measured systemic velocity, proper motion and distance, the system is a blue straggler member of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our analysis shows that V228 is a semi-detached Algol. We obtain M=1.512 +/- 0.022 Msun, R=1.357 +/- 0.019 Rsun, L=7.02 +/- 0.050 Lsun for the hotter and more luminous primary component and M=0.200 +/- 0.007 Msun, R=1.238 +/- 0.013 Rsun, L=1.57 +/- 0.09 Lsun for the Roche lobe filling secondary.
The age of three of the oldest clusters -- M15, M68, M92 -- has been redetermined. We use the latest EOS and opacity data available for calculating both isochrones and zero age horizontal branches and employ the brightness difference between turn-off and horizontal branch to determine the cluster age. Our best ages for all three clusters are about 13 Gyr, and even smaller ages are possible. Our results help to reconcile cluster ages with recent results on the age of the universe determined from the Hubble constant.
Stromgren uvby CCD photometry can be used in a variety of ways to constrain the absolute and relative ages of globular clusters. The reddening corrected (v-y, c1) diagram offers the means to derive ages that are completely independent of distance. Very precise differential ages for clusters of the same chemical composition may also be determined from such 2-color plots, or from measurements of the magnitude difference, Delta_u, between the subgiant and horizontal branches on the $u-y, u$ plane (where both of these features are flat and well-defined, even for clusters like M13 that have extreme…
We discuss the impact of Population II and Globular Cluster (GCs) stars on the derivation of the age of the Universe, and on the study of the formation and early evolution of galaxies, our own in particular. The long-standing problem of the actual distance scale to Population II stars and GCs is addressed, and a variety of different methods commonly used to derive distances to Population II stars are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is given to the discussion of distances and ages for GCs derived using Hipparcos parallaxes of local subdwarfs. Results obtained by different authors are slightly differ…
We present accurate relative ages for a sample of 55 Galactic globular clusters. The ages have been obtained by measuring the difference between the horizontal branch and the turnoff in two, internally photometrically homogeneous databases. The mutual consistency of the two data sets has been assessed by comparing the ages of 16 globular clusters in common between the two databases. We have also investigated the consistency of our relative age determination within the recent stellar model framework. All clusters with [Fe/H]<-1.7 are found to be old, and coeval, with the possible exception of t…
We present theoretical evolutionary sequences of intermediate mass stars (M=3-6.5 solar masses) with metallicity Z=0.004. Our goal is to test whether the self-enrichment scenario by massive Asymptotic Giant Branch stars may work for the high metallicity Globular Clusters, after previous works by the same group showed that the theoretical yields by this class of objects can reproduce the observed trends among the abundances of some elements, namely the O-Al and O-Na anticorrelations, at intermediate metallicities, i.e [Fe/H]=-1.3. We find that the increase in the metallicity favours only a mode…
In four globular clusters (GCs) a non negligible fraction of stars can be interpreted only as a very helium rich population. The evidence comes from the presence of a "blue" main sequence in $ω$ Cen and NGC 2808, and from the the very peculiar horizontal branch morphology in NGC 6441 and NGC 6388. Although a general consensus is emerging on the fact that self--enrichment is a common feature among GCs, the helium content required for these stars is Y$\simgt$0.35, and it is difficult to understand how it can be produced without any --or, for $ω$ Cen, without a considerable--associated metal enha…
We report the identification of a new cataclysmic variable (denoted as CV2) and a probable microlensing event in the field of the globular cluster M22. Two outbursts were observed for CV2. During one of them superhumps with P_sh=0.08875 d were present in the light curve. CV2 has an X-ray counterpart detected by XMM-Newton. A very likely microlensing event at a radius of 2.3 arcmin from the cluster center was detected. It had an amplitude of Delta_V=0.75 mag and a characteristic time of 15.9 days. Based on model considerations we show that the most likely configuration has the source in the Gal…
The ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury program designed to provide a new large, deep and homogeneous photometric database. Based on observations from this program, we have measured precise relative ages for a sample of 64 Galactic globular clusters by comparing the relative position of the clusters' main sequence turn offs, using main-sequence fitting to cross-compare clusters within the sample. This method provides relative ages to a formal precision of 2-7%. We demonstrate that the calculated relative ages are independent of the choice of theo…
Using archival HST/WFPC2 imaging of 7 LMC globular clusters, and following the methods outlined in our previous study, we have reached the tightest constrain so far on their age dispersion, which cannot be greater than ~ 0.5 Gyr. We also confirm earlier results that their average age is comparable to that of the metal-poor Galactic globulars. Evidence is also provided that NGC 1841 is younger than the rest of LMC globulars.
We extend our previous method to determine globular cluster ages using the luminosity function (Jimenez \& Padoan 1996). We show that the luminosity function depends on both age and distance modulus and that it is possible to distinguish between the two. This method provides at the same time independent determinations of distance and age of a GC by simply counting the number of stars found inside specified luminosity bins. The main uncertainties in other traditional methods for determining GCs ages are absent (e.g. mixing length, color-$T_{\rm eff}$ calibration, morphology of the color-magnitu…
We present CCD photometry of SX Phe variables in the field of the globular cluster M 55. We have discovered 27 variables, three of which are probable members of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. All of the SX Phe stars in M 55 lie in the blue straggler region of the cluster color-magnitude diagram. Using period ratio information we have identified the radial pulsation modes for one of the observed variables. Inspection of the period-luminosity distribution permits the probable identifications of the pulsation modes for most of the rest of the stars in the sample. We have determined the slope of th…
Galactic globular cluster (GC) stars exhibit abundance patterns which are not shared by their field counterparts, In the framework of the widely accepted "self-enrichment" scenario for GCs, we present a new method to derive the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of the polluter stars, by using the observed O/Na abundance distribution. We focus on NGC 2808, a GC for which the largest sample of O and Na abundance determinations is presently available. We consider two classes of possible "culprits" : massive Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars (4-9 Msun) and winds of massive stars (WMS) in the mass rang…
Spectra of galaxies contain an enormous amount of information about the relative mixture of ages and metallicities of constituent stars. We present a comprehensive study designed to extract the maximum information from spectra of data quality typical in large galaxy surveys. We test fitting techniques using the Bruzual-Charlot 2003 high resolution simple stellar population synthesis models to simultaneously estimate the ages and metallicities of 101 globular clusters in M31 and the Magellanic Clouds. The clusters cover a wide range of ages and metallicities, 4 Myr to 20 Gyr and -1.6 < [Fe/H] <…
We use masses, radii, and luminosities of the detached eclipsing binary OGLEGC17 derived from photometric and spectroscopic observations to calculate the age and distance of the globular cluster omega Cen. Age versus turnoff mass and age versus luminosity relations from Girardi et al. (2000) yield two independent estimates of the age, 9.1<t<16.7 Gyr and 12.9<t<18.5 Gyr. The distance and distance modulus derived by use of the infrared versus surface brightness relation are d =5385+-300 pc and (m-M)_V=14.06+-0.11. Distances derived from our infrared surface brightness versus color relation and t…
We present preliminary results from our on-going survey of Galactic globular clusters relative ages. The investigation is based on V,I images obtained at the ESO and La Palma telescopes, which make up the largest homogenous photometric catalog to date. A second, independent sample of globulars observed in the B, V bands provides an independent check of the results based on the groundbased data. Age-dependent morphological parameters are measured on the CMDs and are compared with two sets of independent models. We find that the so-called ``vertical'' and ``horizontal'' methods give compatible r…
The various scenarios proposed for the origin of the multiple, helium-enriched populations in massive globular clusters are critically compared to the relevant constraining observations. Among accretion of helium-rich material by pre-existing stars, star formation out of ejecta from massive AGB stars or from fast rotating massive stars, and pollution by Population III stars, only the AGB option appears to be viable. Accretion or star formation out of outflowing disks would result in a spread of helium abundances, thus failing to produce the distinct, chemically homogeneous sub-populations such…
We present narrow band photometry of 91 dwarf ellipticals in the Coma and Fornax clusters taken through the Stromgren (uvby) filter system. Dividing the sample by dwarf morphology into nucleated (dEN) and non-nucleated (dE) dwarfs reveals two distinct populations of early-type systems based on integrated colors. The class of dEN galaxies are redder in their continuum colors as compared to bright cluster ellipticals and dE type dwarfs, and their position in multi-color diagrams can only be explained by an older mean age for their underlying stellar populations. By comparison with the narrow ban…
Based on a new large, homogeneous photometric database of 35 Galactic globular clusters (GGCs), a set of distance and reddening independent relative age indicators has been measured. The observed D(V-I)_2.5 and D(V)(HB-TO) vs. metallicity relations have been compared with the relations predicted by two recent updated libraries of isochrones. Using these models and two independent methods, we have found that self-consistent relative ages can be estimated for our GGC sample. Based on the relative age vs. metallicity distribution, we conclude that: (a) there is no evidence of an age spread for cl…
We present spectroscopic ages, metallicities, and [alpha/Fe] ratios for 70 globular clusters in M31 that were derived from Lick line-index measurements. In addition to a population of old (>10 Gyr) globular clusters with a wide range of metallicities, from about -2.0 dex to solar values, we find evidence for a population of intermediate-age globular clusters with ages between ~5 and 8 Gyr and a mean metallicity around [Z/H]=-0.6. We also confirm the presence of young M31 globular clusters that were recently identified by Beasley et al. (2004), which have ages <1 Gyr and relatively high metalli…
We present measurements of ages, metallicities, and [alpha/Fe] ratios for 16 globular clusters (GC) in NGC 147, NGC 185, and NGC 205 and of the central regions of the diffuse galaxy light in NGC 185, and NGC 205. Our results are based on spectra obtained with the SCORPIO multi-slit spectrograph at the 6-m telescope of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We include in our analysis high-quality HST/WFPC2 photometry of individual stars in the studied GCs to investigate the influence of their horizontal branch (HB) morphology on the spectroscopic analysis. All our sample GCs appear to be old (T>8 Gyr…
Hydrogen-burning is the root cause of the star-to-star abundance variations of light nuclei in Galactic globular clusters (GC). In the present work we constrain the physical conditions that gave rise to the observed abundance patterns of Li, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, as well as Mg isotopes in the typical case of NGC6752. We perform nucleosynthesis calculations at constant temperature, adopting realistic initial abundances for the proto-cluster gas. We use a detailed nuclear reaction network and state-of-the-art nuclear reaction rates. Although simplistic, our analysis provides original results and …
Main sequence turnoff magnitudes from the recent set of Yale isochrones (Chaboyer \ea 1995) have been combined with a variety of relations for the absolute magnitude of RR Lyr stars (\mvrr) to calibrate age as a function of the difference in magnitude between the main sequence turn-off and the horizontal branch (\dv). A best estimate for the calibration of \mvrr is derived from a survey of the current literature: $\mvrr = 0.20 \feh + 0.98$. This estimate, together with other calibrations (with slopes ranging from 0.15 to 0.30) has been used to derive \dv ages for 43 Galactic globular clusters.…
We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-NIC3, near-infrared H-band photometry of globular clusters (GC) around NGC 4365 and NGC 1399 in combination with archival HST-WCPC2 and ACS optical data. We find that NGC 4365 has a number of globular clusters with bluer optical colors than expected for their red optical to near-infrared colors and an old age. The only known way to explain these colors is with a significant population of intermediate-age (2-8 Gyr) clusters in this elliptical galaxy. In contrast, NGC 1399 reveals no such population. Our result for NGC 1399 is in agreement with previou…
New photometry of RRab and RRc stars in Omega Cen is used to calibrate their absolute magnitudes M_V as a function of: a) metallicity; and b) the Fourier parameters of light curves in the V band. The zero point of both calibrations relies on the distance modulus to the cluster derived earlier by the CASE project based on observations of the detached eclipsing binary OGLE GC17. For RRab variables we obtained a relation of M_V=(0.26\pm 0.08)[Fe/H]+(0.91\pm 0.13). A dereddened distance modulus to the LMC based on that formula is $μ_{0}=18.56\pm 0.14$ mag. The second calibration of M_V, which is b…
We report here initial but still strongly conclusive results on absolute ages of galactic globular clusters (GGCs). This study is based on high precision trigonometric parallaxes from the HIPPARCOS satellite coupled with accurate metal abundances ([Fe/H], [O/Fe], and [α/Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy for a sample of about thirty subdwarfs. Systematic effects due to star selection (Lutz-Kelker corrections to parallaxes) and to the possible presence of undetected binaries in the sample of bona fide single stars are examined, and appropriate corrections are estimated. They are found to be…
In this paper we study the properties of ten halo globular clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. CCD images of M33 were obtained as a part of the BATC Colour Survey of the sky in 13 intermediate-band filters from 3800 to 10000Å. By aperture photometry, we obtain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these globular clusters. We estimate the ages of our sample clusters by comparing the photometry of each object with theoretical stellar population synthesis models for different values of metallicity. Our results suggest that eight of the ten sample halo globular clusters have ``intermed…
We here present our first attempt to use Globular Clusters as tracers of their parent galaxy's formation history. Globular Cluster Systems of most early-type galaxies feature two peaks in their optical colour distributions. Blue-peak Globular Clusters are generally believed to be old and metal-poor. The ages, metallicities, and the origin of the red-peak Globular Clusters are being debated. We here present our analysis of the ages and metallicities of the red peak Globular Clusters in the Virgo S0 NGC 4570 using deep Ks-band photometry from NTT/SOFI (ESO program ID 079.B-0511) for the red-peak…
Observational constraints to a large class of decaying vacuum cosmologies are derived using the angular size data of compact radio sources and the latest age estimates of globular clusters. For this class of deflationary $Λ(t)$ models, the present value of the vacuum energy density is quantified by a positive $β$ parameter smaller than unity. In the case of milliarcsecond compact radio-sources, we find that the allowed intervals for $β$ and the matter density parameter $Ω_m$ are heavily dependent on the value of the mean projected linear size $l$. For $l \simeq 20h^{-1} - 30h^{-1}$ pc, the bes…
We present results of a photometric survey for variable stars in the field of the globular cluster Omega Centauri. The observed region was centered roughly on the cluster core and covered 644 arcmin^2. The cluster was monitored on 59 nights in 1999 and 2000. A total of 117 new variables were identified. Among them there are 16 RR Lyr-type stars, 35 SX Phe variables and 26 eclipsing binaries. A comprehensive catalog including all variable stars so far reported from the cluster field is presented. We list basic photometric properties and provide finding charts for a total of 392 objects. For 313…
